Great story Danny ! The only mistake Peter made was not filming Zep more , like every tour.
Yep. That was a massive oversight.
I feel they were pinching "pennies" and losing massive amounts of "pounds" ...
There's lots of clips, bits and pieces, 8mm with sound reels too. I put together 4 hours '69-'80 just from here on You Tube. You just have to put in some time.
UK taxes at the time, and the drugs had everyone on cloud 9 , not really living with the end in mind

There’s still great unreleased material. Osaka on the 71 and 72 tours were both taped on multitrack.
Zep was so undeniably good, they didn't need the press. Their tours sold out through word of mouth.
This host is embarrassingly bad while talking over Mr. Goldberg with foolish comments. Danny Goldberg on the other hand, was a wonderful, informative guest.

I read Peter Grant's book several times. I loved everything about the book. One of the great books in history for me !

Perfectly said! Led Zep is the pinnacle of rock and roll - musically, there was nothing they couldn't do, and do better than anyone else! Jimmy Pages musical EAR for sonics, songwriting and arranging is unparralleld!
Yes indeed I remember hearing Physical Graffiti for the first time. I had already worn out several copies of the first five albums but when PG came along I was thoroughly floored! I remember being mesmerized by that album, both albums. I remember someone I worked with bragging about Frank Zappa. I said “come on out to my truck. We hopped in and I played Trampled Underfoot while we took a cruise around. When the song was over I looked over and he was just staring out of the windshield speechless. Pretty much says it all right there.

A good interviewer researches his guest and the topics/subjects that will most likely be talked about.
What a life this guy has led. Humble too, he mentioned being at the NYC concerts that became The Song Remains the Same. I'm pretty sure he was actually in the movie as well. At least his voice was at one point when Plant is going on about Cosmic Energy and says to someone off camera "did you hear that?" And you can tell the other guy is like-- Jesus, you're high.
I got my other channel pulled which at one point had Entertainment Tonight talk about Hard Rock and Metal Grammy category newly added at the time I recorded pre-Internet, all rock musicians in it cited Led Zeppelin as the key to their career despite the Beatles, Who, Stones, Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Comets, etc
He was in the movie alright! He was the guy handing the promoters asses to them for fucking up the security and letting unofficial bootleg merchandise into the venue! You could tell they were afraid as he thundered his displeasure at them. It's a funny watch.

A lost art, interviewing. This could have been an insightful, interesting , informative interview.

The four dudes were meant to get together from the beginning to start Led Zeppelin. There wasn't four other cats who could have been picked from all the Rock musicians around that could have come close to what what they accomplished. It was MEANT to be and I seen them twice in early '70's to attest to that!

Danny dismisses "underground" radio, when, in fact it was a low-cost promotion tool. ( It was also known as "freeform" radio, where the DJ could play whatever he/she wanted.) Grant asked Ahmet about promotion. He told him; you don't need promotion for LedZep. Just put the word out on FM radio. He did, and MSG sold out in 3 hours.
They played for bill graham at fillmore east their 1st few tours of the us. They didnt play the garden until sept of 1970 the day after jimi hendrix was killed. #justthefactsmaam

The Peter Grant scene in the movie is actually from a concert in Boston. Grant himself told me this .
What circumstance brought you in contact with Peter Grant as you allege?
I'm sure when I spoke with him he said it was Baltimore.

I heard the Grant scene was from the basement of the Toledo Sports Arena during a minor league hockey game. It was all staged. The "actors" were all buddies from the Warner Brothers staff. The skinny guy who Grant is berating was actually Grant's sister's husband and godfather to Grant's first child Willem.
Yea that verbal beat down Peter gives that guy in movie about pirates selling shirts at concert.. WAS NOT AT MSG OR IN NY....GRANT WOULD HAVE BEEN PIMPED ON 34TH ST
I never did care too much for hard rock. But there was something about this band that I dearly loved. Write down the Jimmy page‘s blues style rock style. This man is one hell of a rock guitarist. Absolutely one of my favorite guitars. He was another one who inspired me to play guitar. Thank you Jimmy page.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎸😁😎☮️
What an awesome job! This guy had!! Ok, I had never understood why Zep got bad press until just now They really were on top in 72-73. If not for the press we would have so much more footage.

Jimmy Page wishes there were more archive but they were not ones to follow music business models or advice and wanted as much control over their destiny as possible, sound was a big part of that and they stopped doing TV lipsync type promos
I don't know about that. They got some bad reviews very early on and held a grudge for years. I find it ironic that Jimmy laments their's so few footage of them. They were absolutely ruthless in making sure that no one ever filmed them
@@MrOctober44 Such a shame. The media had a huge pt to do with the lack of Zep material out today.We can hope Page will release the makings of more iso tracks etc.. If Jimmy has the masters, who knows what else he has? Unfortunately the clock is running
My first was their last . They just released the album , “In through the outdoor “. Exploring rock and was enveloped with their music , It’s a journey from their on that you take . Great to hear from the other side

Very interesting. I always wondered why AM radio was such a BIG thing back in the day. Now I know, until '67 FM radio really wasn't a thing.
AM radio waves carry further so when populations were thinner and more dispersed AM covered more people. FM existed in the 1940's but no one used it. In the '60's it became like watching a UA-cam channel with 500 subs and in the '70's it became big business.
Best rock band of all-time and it isn't even close.

He talks about the 2007 O2 London gig as if it were just a nother gig : and again, that broke all records in terms of ticket sales : more than 20 million ticket orders via Internet .... he's pissed of because they never thanked him for what ever ....

Advice to the interviewer. When a guest is a good talker there is no need to toss in agreement signals or "wows". A few is ok. Too many here. Plus your mic is way boomier than his. So he gets drowned out. And it's just distracting. Goldberg is conveying how big Zepp were just fine. No need to thunder down all the sudden with "MASSSSIVEEE". Yeah, we get it. Sometimes it was good. Like when you said "CRUSHING IT". That summed it up well.
Danny is a good interview. However he has that NY demeanor so he seems like he's bothered by questions.
Note to 3rd guy. When a slightly ornery older dude is in the middle of a story, never suddenly pipe in with, "What year was this?" They can't remember and it doesn't effing matter. It throws off the story as the guy stutters around thinking of the correct year.

I enjoy listening to Danny Goldberg in this interview but get annoyed because the host constantly interrupts him and talks about things not actually related to Danny's stories. I think with Danny, the host is better suited to remain quiet.
The host is a real looser; pissed me off to no end. How this flunky was able to interview Goldberg is astonishing. I thought perhaps he was unfortunately related to D.G. being that that would be the only way he could secure an interview. I'm grateful that I was able to learn some solid information though and for that, I'm content.

Great interview, he is candid in his responses, some of the insider tidbits are gold.
I know this is an older video but I had to add from memory from what I read that the members of the band held Danny with some level of respect because he was at least familiar with their music, he was prepared and serious.
I also recall reading that Peter told the band to be on their best behaviour around Danny. For a band from the manager on down who viewed outsiders with disdain (Danny more eloquently expresses this in this interview, hah), this might be the biggest compliment for anyone at that time, even a publicist on their payroll.

Danny Goldberg is a very interesting. guy, would love to hear more, but the interviewer kept interrupting like he was battling Danny over the mic. He did a horrible job.🙄🤬🎧
That was truly excellent. Might be time for a real Zep. movie like, like Queens and Eltons, while some of the folks that were there, are still around.
Page and plant Wooldridge never allow a movie .
And that's kinda sad. Plant draws a line when it comes to Zep, unless it benefits him. Page, not so much. Just a non-rock stars opinion, but alot of folks spent alot of money on their records and have showed em alot of love over the years. Peter Grants dead, it might be time to lift the veil a fraction.
@@adamwatson6916 Plant kept the Zeppelin legend in tact by not selling out. He turned down huge amounts of money for a reunion tour. He knew the band died with Bonzo. IF it were up to page they would be playing state fairs and opening for the puppet show in Spinal Tap. Page only cares about the money.

Peter was the Guardian over Led Zeppelin. There are so many ways to get f'd over in the Music Business. What Peter's great failing was though, imo, was he admittedly didn't want other people selling photos and making money off of the band, yet he never found a way to really capitalize on the Millions of dollars that could have been made on Zeppelin merchandising their own brand. With t-shirts for example. There should have been a mail order business for that starting in 1973.
And not filming more live concerts and releasing live albums back in the day. I don't know who decided to make TSRTS only a double LP, but that was big mistake. Other supergroups did very well releasing 3 and 4 album live sets: Chicago, ELP, Wings, etc.

Peter Grant was right! The band are the stars! Not the record label, arena, club owners, magazines, etc..
Esquire mag has online Page interview from 2020 talk about Zeps anniversary 50th, fans on UA-cam couldn't wait for delayed response officially and put out new mixes of live 1970s Zep soundboards, just flat out amazing stuff! Jimmy Page says Good Times as their first exposure track changed drumming forever after that fateful day, in honor of 40th anniversary losing John Henry Bonham
Page will only put put multitrack tapes . He will not release soundbaords . He does not the sound quality of Basic 2 track SB tapes. He can't edit them the way he likes and you can't really remix soundboard tapes . You can Eq them a little different and remaster them but you can't go back to the individual instrument tracks and rmrix because their are no tracks to go back.. they are just recordings of the house mix .

This could have been much better; if the host had kept his inane, mundane comments to himself. D.G. has been an insider of the rock world. Let the man tell stories.

Too many critics have liked to make themselves look important by lifting up somebody and by destroying somebody else.
I think it's funny that this guy managed Nirvana and was a promoter for one of the bands, probably on Kurt's shitlist.
