  • The Truth About Peter Grant | Legendary Manager Of Led Zeppelin
The most notorious band of all time could only have been managed by an equally notorious figure. Led Zeppelin accrued a legendary and nefarious reputation among fans, with stories of them ravaging hotel rooms and sacrificing teenage groupies beginning to run around the music rumour mill from the very beginning of their career. Like all things, these were largely exaggerated, but it was hard to exaggerate the actions of manager Peter Grant. Standing over six feet tall and weighing over 300 pounds, Grant used his size to his advantage when shaking down everyone from concert promoters to fans recording bootlegs.
Grant first encountered Jimmy Page when he took over managerial duties for the floundering Yardbirds, then at the end of their initial run. Almost immediately, Grant became a boogeyman figure to everyone who wasn’t a Led Zeppelin band member: whether you were a fan, groupie, label executive, or anyone in between, Grant was the one man you didn’t want to cross.

1973 me and two of my mates all aged 17 were mooching around city Hall Newcastle on Tyne hoping to get to see zeppelin we had no tickets ! as we were waiting by the stage door a jaguar car pulled up and out got Peter grant ! he asked us if there was a safe place to park and one of my mates said "yeah there's a car park around the corner" he asked my mate if he could drive he said "yes" Peter threw the keys at him and said OK show me ! so off they went with my mate driving ! back they came about ten minutes later ! he asked if we had tickets and we of course said no ! he said " the lads will be here in a few minutes for the sound check" go sit in the hall and listen to them" so we got a private session from them from the "houses of the Holy" album ! he said hang around and when they come back ill introduce you to the band ! as good as his word he arranged for the security to leave us be ! when the band came back for the show true to his word he introduced us to the band we had a good chat with them ! he then said when the band come on stage go through this side door and sit on the stage and watch the performance which of course we did sitting on that stage near the amps was incredible and I can say that John bonhams drumming was like being pleasantly beaten up! what a night that was ! I got a pack of string from jimmy page which I stupidly put on my guitar thinking his talent might rub off ...it didn't !
the best concert I ever attended !

what a great story. Imagine driving Grant's Jag and having him sit by you as you drove. Both exhilarating and intimidating at the same time. And you guys got to watch and meet the band. OMG. What was that like? What was the band like? The great Jimmy Page, JPJ and Bonham and Plant. You guys at 17 must have just been floored. I would have at any age. The greatest band ever. And to have the feared Peter Grant be so nice to you guys must have been even more incredible.

      actually may not be true..
One night, on July 29th, 1973, the band were burgled of over $200k in cash by an unknown party. Nearly 50 years later, the crime remains unsolved
How ever they are rumors, but you never know some times rumors have some truth to it, the rumor is that Peter Grand knew where the money was, and at what time would be the best to steal that $200,000.00 Rumor has it Peter Grant was in on it and gave the information to the people who done the deed, and of course Peter Grant Got half of that..
Weather it's true or not, i don't really know but it could be..
In police work there is an old saying, Every one is a suspect until the case is solved...
you have to think that way, it may be dark and a negative attitude but, some times you have to get your hands dirty to clean things up..

Peter was a very tough man indeed. When LZ toured the Deep South in 1970, a group of sailors began to taunt them about their long hair and bohemian appearance.
Peter walked over to them and picked two of them up in his massive arms, and said "What's your problem Popeye?" Needless to say, the verbal abuse suddenly stopped.
Not a man to pick a fight with.

I think about how much I would have benefitted having that force in front of me as we wrote, recorded and performed live. Without that any artist can either run or get sucked into the fan blades. Grant was the windkeeper and he did a fine job guaranteeing that Led Zeppelin were as evolved and worked through as the Beatles. I remember hearing that Grant was going to manage Elvis Presley on a foreign tour. He and Tom Parker met when the famous meeting of Led Zeppelin and Elvis took place. I think Colonel Parker finally found somebody he thought was much like himself and Parker of course couldn't travel abroad because he had no passport because of his illegal alien status in America. I don't remember why it didn't happen but I somehow think the they had planned for Elvis to to an extended run in London.

When Zeppelin was in New York and Peter Grant found out there was unlicensed t-shirt stands selling Zeppelin apparel he went outside with a couple stage hands, busted the stand up,took the t-shirts and gave the dude a couple bumps on the head.
Reportedly John Bonham joined in sometimes.

…it was the equivalent of having a King Henry VIII as your manager. Plain and simple. If it were the mid 1500’s and Grant was in charge somehow, maybe he too would’ve had some 70,000 executed that animal Henry had. Like Bonzo (whom Peter took a peculiar liking to on account of their similarities in temperament,) Grant was just another teddy bear underneath all the brashness. We’re all human. Zeppelin did luck out big time having the cards fall on his lap when the Yardbirds called it a day. Without him I’m not fully certain that the Zeppelin would’ve gained its famed cruising altitude. Likely not.

He was yelling at me and a couple of friends, how he was going to kill us for selling T-shirts (though it was hard to understand him with his thick accent). I said we weren’t selling anything as we were walking to the concert, a little late. After we surrounded him he beat a retreat and started mumbling something. I’m surprised he didn’t get shot…..acting the way he did.

Peter Grant did zero to help Led Zeppelin. Yes he made them money. But he rode them
Into the ground just like the Colonel did to Elvis Presley. By the time they recorded Physical Graffiti Led Zeppelin had put out 5 albums and did something like 350 concerts in 5 years. Plants voice was still recovering from surgery. They had to use old songs just to blend in to hide how much his voice changed. Half of the album are left over songs from other albums. He ignored the drug problems and did nothing to help the band mates. If Led Zeppelin didn’t make money he didn’t make money. Why don’t you think other bands didn’t use him.
By 1975 the cracks were beginning to appear by 1977 Page was a skinny strung out mess. He had a terrible decades long battle with heroin. By 1979 the band was shot. Plants voice was terrible in 1980 Page couldn’t play like he used to. John Bohnam was bloated drinking heavily and had a heroin addiction he would die in 1980 a month away from a North American Tour.
Peter Grant kept trotting them out there drug problems keep going your son does keep playing. Why do you think Robert Plant.tries to distance himself from that part of his life.
Grant was an equal member and he was going to squeeze every dollar he could. And did zero to keep the band members healthy. Bands like Metallica play better now at 60 years old than Led Zeppelin did when members were between 31 and 35 years old.
He hated bootlegs yet until his death he was selling bootleg copies of Knebworth 79 from ads in the back of Rolling Stone Magazine. He used an address in NYC where you could send money and would get a VHS copy. I suspect his son has made millions leaking bootlegs. Because after he died in 1995 slowly soundboards were popping up out of nowhere for 20 years the only good sound board was destroyer. From From 1998-2007 full soundboards kept popping up. I had a connection so I got them cheap I couldn’t keep up with all of them
Coming out. The 1975 and 1977 tours were surfacing.

Page began using Heroine in 1975. Before that he dabbled in drugs and booze like most rock people did but, did not have a habit until he began doing heroine. Bonham was a boozer but, not an addict. He did drugs over the years but, they were not a big thing for him.
Plant had surgery on his voice in 71/72. It is not certain what was wrong but, it was common knowledge that Plant did not warm up before concerts or help his voice with honey and tea like many singers did. Plant would not do anything to 'baby' his voice trying to be a tough guy.
As for the touring, that was the band's decision and not Grant's. They wanted to play and tour until the last years when it was becoming a drag and they wanted to spend more time with their families. Before Bonham died he was getting very depressed about touring and wanted to stay with his family and work his farm. That is when his drinking increased much. And the last tour they were planning in 80 Bonham was so distraught by the thought of leaving again when he wanted to stay home caused him to seriously want to quit the band. And it was why he drank so much his last day alive. It was really getting to him. JPJ was wanting to stay home more and be with his family who he missed - but many times brought his wife while on tour - but he
was also itching to produce more with other talent. Plant wanted to stretch his wings and go solo for awhile and was considering leaving at that time. When his son died in 77 Plant quit drugs and booze and stayed mostly sober the last years. He wanted to mature and so, was at the end of Led Zep.
If Bonham did not die the band would probably have ended just because of where the individual member were at in 1980 and being in their early 30s they were not kids anymore. Even with Page's addiction the band was past the party hard era and were growing up.
None of this had anything to do with Grant.
Grant was their manager and watched out for his guys. He was always watching to make sure no one was ripping his band off. And if you look at what pathetic managers there are today and no one really caring about the artist or looking out for them Grant is amazing for his focus on protecting his band.
So, your take down is unfair

Peter Grant got Led Zeppelin FAR MORE money than any other manager did before or since. And I challenge you to show us any other manager who was able to attain the insanely high percentages from concerts that Grant did for Zeppelin.......far more than any other band or artist was getting from shows. Every band member absolutely loved Peter Grant, INCLUDING ROBERT PLANT. Every band member has stated it in countless interviews, even years after Bonham's death. And if you honestly believe ANY OTHER manager would've even attempted to attain the lion's share of the profits for Led Zeppelin concerts the way Grant did, then you need to lay off smokin' the birdseed.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 Рік тому

@@DianeLake-sw3ym I agree with you 100%. Peter Grant commanded the lion's share of profit percentages for Led Zeppelin concerts that would go to the band members and NOT into the pockets of the promoters. No other manager would even dare try to charge such high percentages. Besides, every band member of Led Zeppelin always loved Peter Grant, they even said so during interviews conducted years after Bonham's death & break-up of the band. That other viewer talking smack about Grant, is full of sh*t. Lastly: I haven't met a person yet who has enough power over another human being to force them to quit abusing heroin OR alcohol. Only the junkie or alcoholic himself can do that.
