Now that I am elderly, retired, one of my most enjoyable things to do is listen to the sounds of family. Quietly listening to the sounds of my children. My children are now grandmothers, mothers, children and their sounds when they gather is music to my ears in these elderly years. When alone I can reflect on that sound of family unity. It is lovely.
🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭 I'm only a 31 year old mom but I can totally relate to this. I love just watching my daughters giggle and talk with each other, while our puppies rough house, and their dad clears his throat while he's reading. 🥲🥲
Nice discussion. I'm now long retired, living in Covid isolation. Life is very joyful reading books, playing with the dogs, watching videos such as this, etc. Life is good...
The Rosary . Contemplative, meditative, scriptural, portable , accessible. Pray it alone, in community , teach your family. Our Lady asked us to pray it . Its a weapon for peace, and transforms the heart.
I was struck by how difficult it was for me to watch this video from beginning to end, only a half hour, without cutting it short by all of the distractions in my life and head! I love the idea that useless things are actually contemplative, so long as we go slow with them. The idea of savoring. Thank you.
A great Catholic tradition is to occasionally undertake a spititual retreat of either a weekend or a week, while residing in a spiritual centre. These are valued times during which silence reigns supreme. They are usually conducted by the Centre, under the guidance of a priest. Meditative talks are interspersed by Mass and other religious services, so that prayer leads to contemplation. A refreshing way to live, eat and pray alongside others in silence, apart from some self directed breaks when one can engage in conversation with another during a walk outside of the Center. No chance of distraction, only a slowing down of the soul. Try it, it can become addictive! Thanks
Agreed. It is a battle with all distractions... sometimes is hard to be in silence. Actually it take us away from our responsabilities. Lord help us to be wise with time.

The topic discussed is very relevant in light of many challenges that families face today. The use of cellphones may seem to be harmless and certainly useful but when it's done in a most important moment for families to share their quality time together then it's a most distractive gadget ever developed.
Love this discussion ... it covers much that is problematic with digital. Cash + competition between businesses tends to drive insatiably the industry towards a tide of digital excess. Worse, digital is likely making much of the world poorer as money is poured into the hands of a few IT leaders

Thanks for your video on this topic of useless vs useful things to do. I've been cracking myself up over my life with this question, I guess there is a contemplative side of me, wondering if what I've been doing, at any one time, is what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Through the grace of God, it just recently made sense to me that as long as I'm doing whatever I'm doing for the greatest glory of God, I should be alright, so even if I'm bored, don't try to disguise my boredom but acknowledge it, and if it bothers me to much, offer I'd offer my feelings to Jesus and ask Him to guide me. Anything we do for the grace of God, very much like St. Therese of Lisieux said, no matter if it is a small thing to do, give glory to God. To wrap up, don't be fooled by your own ego to dictate what you need to be doing or not, because even if it feels good for you, whatever you're doing, if you're not aware of the presence of God in you, it might be not worth doing after all. Bless you all!

Colour is important and notifications are designed to catch your attention (hinted at by Bishop Barron at around 21:00 minutes). A bit like how casino slot machines work. Try changing the screen to black and white and watch the detox. Instructions: Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size then turn "Color Filters" on. That setting is buried deep in there.
Distractions are junk food for the soul. Like fast food, they are addictive, and we need to consume more and more to fill the hole in the soul that we no longer believe in, because we are too distracted.
I long for the days when children used to.play in the woods, mothers dig in the gardens and all gather for supper as a family and afterwards the father of the house leads prayers. Now the family sits in the so called living room and each is alone on the smartphone! God have mercy on us.
To the questioner at the end -- It's self-evident that there is a realm outside of the material. Consciousness is not material. Emotions are not material. The color blue is not material. We do not have direct knowledge of the material because we experience it indirectly through our senses.
Also, be aware and know that the various marketing departments of various cell phone brands and such devices researched into addiction to gambling and the way a gambling addict responds to the game he plays and applied several of these characteristics to cell phone devices and apps. This is not a game and that "thing" in your pocket or in your hands is not a toy either.
Sometimes I feel that I am the only human in the world who is not addicted to a mobile phone. I barely use it. I replenish it only three or four times a year.
What recommended approach can you give about reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church? It's a journey I'd like to take to understand my faith being a revert, but taking the approach of going to my room in private sitting on my desk and reading. Supplements? Sections?
Welcome Home !!!! What a great grace to receive that you came to return to the Catholic FAITH!!!! As for the CCC, truly it is not a difficult work to read. Saint Pope John Paul II wanted a catechism that ALL wouod understand so that anyone could learn and appreicate what STILL IS THE OFFICIAL TEACHINGS WITH REGARD TO OUR FAITH and then as to how to live out that Faith in whatever vocation GOD has called you to embrace so that you may become a saint. He was the one who introduced to Saint Peter's in Rome the need to fill the inside and outside with MODERN SAINTS so that people realize what the Second Vatican Council declared "The Universal Call to Holiness!" Many married and lay people were canonized or beautified under his reign. That is why, you really just need to set a specfic time eadh day to spend a specific amount of time, simply, slowly, and attentively reading the CCC. It unfolds in a wonderous way that you will see how " everything falls into place!" as far as the doctrine or dogmas of our Faith truly is the One, True, Faith that Jesus Christ founded and which the Holy Spirit continues to sancitfy and remain with us until Christ comes back again. "Then there will be a new Heaven and a New Earth." as we read in Sacred Scripture. May God ; Our Almighty and Loving Father, continue to bless you and may you contine to seek the presence of that "That peace which the world cannot give," God bless Sister RIta Dolores Monahan, OV
Simple logic on science and math and religion: If you haven't discovered all answers, it's out truly more near truth to tend to not believing what's unknown/yet? It's a matter of choice. Take the risk and face the consequences.
I would start by doing the following. Don't buy an i phone, maybe buy an Android or a simpler more limited device, you save money. Use your phone exclusively for calls, texts and the occasional e mail. Then use your PC or MAC for more complex applications such as something work related. Do not be afraid of leaving the house if you are simply going to do something relatively simple and that takes a short amount of time without taking your phone. People will panic if they go out for 15 minutes just for something simple like buying a loaf of bread or a bottle of soda and then they realize they left their phone at home even though they'll be back home in 15 minutes. Meditate on this. It is becoming extremely unhealthy that our cell phones in many or most cases own us rather than we owning the device. God bless. Mike.

What is the best choice for useless time? Where is the answer for that in this discussion?
I am a beautiful person. The other side of the most important thing is that the only thing I can do it.
Bishop we are already ready for your talk👍👍
Listening to this put me in mind of The Compleat Angler. Or The Contemplative Man's Recreation
by Izaak Walton.
I wish local churches taught lectio divino and contemplative prayer.
We had both at our church, it was beautiful
Try Franciscan at Home. The catechist certification coure Intermediate certification has a great class on lectio divina.
Amen.
If all things are created, there are no "trivial" things.
Mmm maybe maybe not! Unless they were created by God.
Bishop Sheen on one of his tv shows said that speed was a sign of evil. He said nudity was too. There was one more but I can’t remember what it was.
"How to Read a Book" by Mortimer Adler is a great resource for deeper reading
The same way that we make time for doing the “useful things, we should also deliberately allocate time for doing the “useless things”.
30:38 justified anger is the best anger.
Mmm but I'm thinking we should be careful about that🙏
@@phil4v8 of course.

Simple logic on science and math and religion:
If you haven't discovered all answers, it's out truly more near truth to tend to not believing what's unknown/yet?
God bless. Mike.
Thank Bishop Barron. This is so important in that 21st century.
Bishop Barron you are great. I have learn so much. Thank you.
