Every country has to deal with things like that. As a German from Bavaria i get questions like "oh why don't you wear Lederhosen " " don't you listen to German folk music" "how is it to live in a country most of the others hate because of WW2" and omg, tons of Nazi jokes... some people you just met a few hours ago go right in it because they think all of them are funny. No matter what country and generation, 100 years ago or today. These stereotypes will survive us all :) I think most of these people are just really clumsy and socially awkward and don't really mean it in a bad way. But I get it, sometimes it's a bit frustrating.
As a Canadian that lived on the prairies, right there with ya with the winter issues with our cars. As soon as it gets below -10 we have to plug our cars in, and once it hits -40 in January or so (some places the poor bastards get -60) we still have issues starting cars. They gotta run for about 30 minutes and you hope the steeringwheel warmed up enough to not burn your hands on it. Then digging the snow out of the way to get out of the driveway is an added bonus. Tempermental weather, wind (though not as intense as what you guys get from what I've learned).
I speak "scandinavian" wich is a mix of danish norwegian and swedish and most ppl who try to understand me do in Scandinavia but when I speak Icelandic they are puzzled

Don't worry about the negative comments. You are allowed to hate and not like things. Just because you live and grow up somewhere does not mean you can't dislike things in the country. Your videos are always lots of fun to watch. I was crazy about Iceland when I found out it was the country with no mosquitoes and I came across your channel when I was trying to learn everything about Iceland. Thank you for your time and making these videos. You are doing amazing :) Stay safe and take care.
Personally, I wish Iceland would limit tourism for certain times out of the year or block places off more like they do in other countries or touristy places. I hate seeing tourists destroy and humiliate things that are sacred to the Icelandic people.
Tourists should not destroy places, true! But blocking off places is definitely a bad solution. It should be possible for everyone to enjoy the nature. I do know that it is hard to check who destroys things, but limiting access is not the solution. In e.g. the US, their stupid permit system sometimes makes it impossible for visitors to see places if they're not living there and can go at any time. Nature should be a place for everybody (which was why US national parks were developed in the beginning...) and definitely NOT any kind of lottery!
That’s true. I’m Italian and I’m in Rome right now, and it’s EXTREMELY crowded. Unfortunately, a lot of tourists (foreigners, but also Italians) leave trash everywhere in the streets of the city. And I absolutely hate it!
I'm so sorry people called you ungrateful. There's just so many people that just look for a reason to piss and moan and can't take things for what they are. It's just you giving us a taste of what it's like where you live. I think that's great and I hope you continue to make videos like this.
In fact, Hatari's music is not my type of music - usually. But I love them because they showed me what kind of country is Iceland or what kind of people live there. And I'm in love with all you now 💙🇮🇸
I live here for more than 2 years and what I like and dislike about Iceland is: - the thing which I hate about Iceland the most is that HORRIBLE WEATHER! - on the other side I like people. They are very nice, relaxed, chilled, not stressing , they dont understimate the others (in my experiences) and always behave to others with respect (even they are in different positions). For example in my country are people many times very angry and rude to other without reason. because they can be. For example in bank to customers, doctors and nurses to patients, teachers to students, at all kinds of offices, etc.. Because they think they are something "more" than others or what, (because they know about situation more). Then people have low self confidence and understimets themselves which is sad :/ In iceland everybody everywhere was very kind to me..in bank, at school, at work (bosses acting like friends :o), at all offices Ive been to, which was very surprising for me. But thats how everybody should behave! we are all equals, nobody is "better" or "worse"! That Iceland taught me and Im thankful for it..
What country are you originally from? I want to know so I could avoid it. I kinda got the feeling Iceland was like that. It's because they are like one close family. I hope Iceland stays like that and people don't try to ruin it. I want to live there too! I believe everyone should be treated equal. I'm not a feminist though. I'm a child of God.
@@sidynqa YES I agree. I'm from Canada and I've been living in central Europe in the British part of Spain for three years now and the people are incredibly rude here(particularly the brits) .

Europe has a lot of tourists as well BUT plus we have those motorhomes everywhere. So, you go to some remote spot and want to enjoy scenery by yourself, but then you might find there are already 2-3 motorhomes parked in the scenic spot. You want to drive somewhere, but traffic is so slow, because of some motorhome moving slowly and not letting anyone pass. Luckily there is no threat in Iceland for motorhome invasion.
When I was in England and I told one boy that I'm from Poland, he asked me: "It's part od Russia, right? Do you see polar bears on the streets?". I made huge face palm
I have a Slovakian friend, here in the UK, and she works in a library! She has lived here for years is fluent in English so she used to read the stories at story time! One day her manager gave the story time job to someone else and said to my friend - "don't worry, you can read the stories in Polish!" She was like - "I'm from Slovakia so I speak Slovak, not Polish!" Many people here, where I live in the UK, thinks everybody with an Eastern European accent is Polish - how daft eh? 🙄
@@einhorntaschentuch9404 actually icelandic is more difficult than german. Icelandic remains as the closest langugae to old German, from a lot of centuries ago, since it was isolated and without contact to other languages till not long ago. It has a lot of grammatical details etc. way harder(a germanist talking here)
I don’t live in a small country but my town is small. Everyone knows everyone so when one person does something wrong someone else just goes and tells his mom on him. It doesn’t matter how old you are. We seem to have a lot of the same problems. Also, when it gets cold we don’t go skiing we all go sledding. We take our kids to the highest hill we can find and we just have fun. But, when it’s hot then everyone wants to go swimming. Thanks for the video. It’s cool seeing the similarities in our countries.
Your accent is beautiful, but for a second I honestly thought you said "the elf care system" at 10:10. I was getting really excited because i definitely wanted to hear more about this.
I live in Minnesota, and it snows a lot here. I bought the Oxgord windshield cover, and it’s made winter driving so much easier. It’s only $30, and you don’t have to scrape your car anymore! I can’t check whether it ships to Iceland without actually ordering one. It may even be worth the investment to ship it if scraping your car almost everyday is as unpleasant for you as it was for me.
My guess is that it's underfunded by the government. Very few doctors, specialists and hospitals. Low pay which keeps people from training for healthcare jobs, etc. From an American. :-)
@@iggieagle6366 My wife is a nurse in the US me, a welder. I was looking to compare wages of the two professions. Nurse make considerably less in Iceland. With the cost of living so high who would want to go into a career that pays so little with such high level of education?

As a Bostonian, I agree with you about frustrating tourists. However, because I have traveled to many different places outside of the US, I have learned so much about cultural differences, so I always take that into account before I get upset about anything. Also, Boston is such an eclectic, melting pot of people, that does help us to be more accommodating to visitors from all over.
Wonderful video. Informative. Esp liked the piece you spoke in Icelandic. Because I do not understand the words I could listen to the sound...so clipped and precise, like rounded shards of glass refracting slanting winter light into a million brilliant colors. Such a beautiful sounding language...
If you really think about it, if you’re the first UA-camr from Iceland, then you’re already a legend and maybe it’ll push other people from Iceland who wants to be UA-camrs and start their channels. Keep up the great work, love from 🇺🇸
Had the pleasure of visiting your country a couple weeks ago. I must agree with you regarding the weather. I'm from Florida and it felt like being in a Tropical Storm 24/7 and it did rain most days. But with that said we still enjoyed our time there and absolutely loved being away from people. We saw a few "touristy" sites, but we mostly kept to ourselves and loved driving through the countryside. Just stunning!
You have 4 cases in Icelandic, in Polish we have 7 and SO many languages have even more. I strongly believe it's common in every language to have troubles with grammar or spelling (for natives I mean). Half of population in Poland mistake the conjugation or declension of words, and don't know if it should be "powiedziałby" or "powiedział by" (first is correct) or "dziewczynom" instead of "dziewczyną" (correctness depends on the case but some people don't know it). So Icelanders aren't special and alone in that problem.
Finnish have 15 (?) Different cases and of corse I can stack them up and add possesion indicators on them and so on. You can get a lot of different forms like that. All the verbs have similar thing going on as well. For example "juoksentelisinko" means "I wonder if I should run around aimlessly" or "koirinenikin" means "even with my dogs" There are a lot longer and crazier examples but they get too crazy even for native speakers ^^
@@jogobella1408 Latin, the language were spanish developed from, had also 7 cases, but the endings started to be dropped to the point that the case system wasn't sustainable anymore. Slavic languages are the only indoeuropean languages that have retained the case system so well
@@caller145 Well, but finish is a agglunative language while polish is a fusional one. Declension in polish is much more difficult to learn, as there's a lot of different types of declension.
I get what you mean about tourists. I visited London only twice in my life (I'm from the UK and live in the North) and when I went it was absolutely heaving with tourists. I've never seen anywhere so busy. I felt so uncomfortable with the crowds. I don't know how people from London actually cope with all the people there. It's crazy. :O
Mass tourism is a huge problem , Icelanders needs to be careful. Look at what happen to other countries like Thailand or some cites in Europe. It's barely liveable 😩
That's a bit of an exaggeration. Some places would be dead without tourism too. There are many things that go into sensible tourism. Definitely hard for smaller locations to handle masses of people, but it's a bit hard to control.
As a person who has spent most of their life in Minnesota, I can relate to your first complaint. Also, as an American, I can relate to living in a country where much of the population is terrible at their own language. Anyway, I'm happy your channel is around. It has been my plan for a while to eventually retire in Iceland, so it is nice to hear different perspectives.
Love when you switched to your native tongue to make the point. A very beautiful language. So are tourists less of an impact in Iceland during the colder seasons?
here in Russia during the winter time we also have to get up earlier to get rid of the snow and frost from the surface of the car, and boy do we have these traffic jams after the blizzards...
I really understand how you feel towards your country. I watched both part 1 and part 2 of the worst things about living in Iceland. I'm from Malta and I cannot tell you how many times I was like, "SAME". The tourist part really hit close to my heart. Malta thrives on tourism but we receive so many each year that it's becoming too much. We have extremely hot summers as opposite to your winters. We are much smaller than Iceland and we are almost 500,000 people.. I empathize with you, girl! :( Malta is basically the Iceland of Europe but much MUCH smaller....
In others countries also most people make mistakes in their native language. I think it's totally normal because a language is alive and evolve constantly. It's not related to the complexity of a language. A lot of languages have cases (German, Finnish...) and it's totally possible to learn them :) BTW your cat is so cute ❤️
Hrafna- I am from the future, I jumped through a wormhole, but I need to get a message to you. In 2020 a virus pandemic (no zombies) will consume the world and stop all travel. Soon you will be able to travel beautiful Iceland without tourists...all to yourself. My portal is closing, so I must go. Bless bless
Even though I don’t speak the language, I liked it when you started speaking in Icelandic to fully express how you feel about swimming. 😊 Plus I happen to think your native language sounds quite beautiful 💗
I'm not sure who would be petty enough to call you ungrateful.you do not strike me as a person void of gratitude.in fact I get quite the opposite impression I see you love your homeland and the people in your country enough to share it with the rest of the world.i appreciate what you do and I definitely enjoy your videos.dont apologize so much.not everyone is so easily offended.
I loved hearing Icelandic spoken by a native speaker, for once! I think that may well have been the first time I've ever heard it spoken by someone actually brought up in the language. It's so beautiful sounding! And yeah, it IS an extremely difficult language to learn... I love learning languages though so I'm up for a good challenge! I think the reason it's so hard is because it just hasn't really changed much since the Old Norse days due to its relative isolation from any leveling influences. In fact, I've often heard it said that modern-day Icelanders can quite easily read the Sagas with little to no translation necessary. I dunno how true that assertion really is (maybe you can clarify that for me?), but it seems at least plausible. Icelandic and Faroese, though, would surely be the closest anyone could get to hearing what Old Norse would've sounded like (similar to how Lithuanian is the closest anyone can hope to get to what Proto-Indo-European would've been like). It sounds cool as hell when you speak it! The fact that you can speak it so beautifully is so freaking awesome to a language-head like me :D In stark contrast to Icelandic, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian have all been extremely leveled out due to centuries of constant contact with both each other and neighboring countries. Now, they all resemble each other so much that you can get a Dane, Swede and a Norwegian together and watch them all comfortably have a conversation with each other with only minor concessions being made to accommodate the few differences that DO still exist. Actually, one thing I'm curious about is Icelandic's intelligibility with Faroese, if any. ARE they mutually intelligible to any degree? It seems like there would be, even if it were only small. Certainly they'd have to be more intelligible with each other than either is to the three mainland languages, right?
Whenever you feel bit down in Iceland, visit Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. There are 40,000 Icelanders live there permanently. You can speak Icelandic there and get all Amazon parcels.
I can relate to the whole tourist issue. I live in Las Vegas, NV. It is Labor Day weekend here in the states, and we are expecting upwards of 325k visitors (it's a 4 day weekend for most people). So basically like your entire country coming here for the weekend. We avoid the strip like the plague, I cant even tell you the last time I ventured down there!
I didnt understand one word from Icelandic, but oh my gosh I can listen this language all day. You are great youtuber, keep your spirit. I hope one day to visit your homeland. Hail from Bulgaria.

10:05 and 10:10 could you talk more about the healthcare system and what do you mean by saying they are underpaid? My girlfriend is a doctor and we would like to move to Iceland in the future so the more information we gather, the better! Thank you!
thank you for your videos, i really love them. i've been in iceland this summer (sorry, i'm one of the annoying tourists), but I really can understand you when you fell bothered by all these people around. i come from italy and i travelled in iceland because in summer every place (in italy, in europe ecc) is very crowded and iceland is a small piece of land where crowds are smaller. in italy you can barely find a place to swim in a beach, or a sit in a restaurant, or to visit a monument. so I can really understand you

The soft kitty in the back just lounging ❤
3:30 very normal weather, even the probability variability.
From Oregon to Colorado the weather is haphazard.

The two languages are similar in many ways.
@@beatlesrgear They are the same language from the beginning. We have only become much more influenced by other languages in Europe over time than Iceland have.
I'm living in Iceland for two months now and I love it. 🇮🇸😍
your makeup looks FLAWLESS! i absolutely love your channel, especially the icelandic videos as i am trying to learn it. thank you 🥰
Anna Curdoglo (just letting you know that I’m giving you a tip!) you can use the app HiNative, tHIs ComMeNt Is SponCoereeeed- ok sorry lol I’ll stop, but seriously though, I love that app, Icelandic people help others learn their language and stuff like that
Don't worry about the negative comments.
Matt H. Yeah that annoys me that tourists break the rules anywhere
And I absolutely hate it!
well that's some money for ya but I would definitely ban all asian tourists
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not even from there but a break would be a time for Icelanders to enjoy their own country in peace!
I'm so sorry people called you ungrateful. There's just so many people that just look for a reason to piss and moan and can't take things for what they are. It's just you giving us a taste of what it's like where you live. I think that's great and I hope you continue to make videos like this.
I know, people just want to hate others so badly that is just sad 😔
In fact, Hatari's music is not my type of music - usually. But I love them because they showed me what kind of country is Iceland or what kind of people live there. And I'm in love with all you now 💙🇮🇸
When you started speaking Icelandic I realised how much I love the sound of it 😍
I live here for more than 2 years and what I like and dislike about Iceland is:
- the thing which I hate about Iceland the most is that HORRIBLE WEATHER!
Then people have low self confidence and understimets themselves which is sad :/
In iceland everybody everywhere was very kind to me..in bank, at school, at work (bosses acting like friends :o), at all offices Ive been to, which was very surprising for me.
@@magicjesus3603 Central Europe :) I think each country is pretty the same there :/ but its only mine experience..
@@sidynqa YES I agree. I'm from Canada and I've been living in central Europe in the British part of Spain for three years now and the people are incredibly rude here(particularly the brits) .
@UCtZ3I_gAXR6dz7c0P-QGnHw good for you! :) I love boh Canada and Spain :) been there. now Im in London :D (love travelling :D )
come to Iceland one day..people are very nice :)
@@sidynqa yes I'd love to go to Iceland. I believe everyone is made by God and should be treated with equality and respect. Once you start putting people above each other and acting superior is when you get bitter people in society who end up shooting up schools. I bet Iceland doesn't have that issue very often
I read fudgepalm, face palm makes more sense.
I think that sometimes the whole Eastern Europe seems to be one huge Russia for the rest of the world 😄😂😃
I have a Slovakian friend, here in the UK, and she works in a library! 🙄
So, do you see the polar bears?
Lol. Africans get asked if we get chased by Lions...well we do but...

@@einhorntaschentuch9404 actually icelandic is more difficult than german. Icelandic remains as the closest langugae to old German, from a lot of centuries ago, since it was isolated and without contact to other languages till not long ago. It has a lot of grammatical details etc. way harder(a germanist talking here)
I’m loving the pop of color in your eyes 💜

I don’t live in a small country but my town is small. Everyone knows everyone so when one person does something wrong someone else just goes and tells his mom on him. It doesn’t matter how old you are. We seem to have a lot of the same problems. Also, when it gets cold we don’t go skiing we all go sledding. We take our kids to the highest hill we can find and we just have fun. But, when it’s hot then everyone wants to go swimming. Thanks for the video. It’s cool seeing the similarities in our countries.
Worst things about living in Iceland

Your accent is beautiful, but for a second I honestly thought you said "the elf care system" at 10:10. I was getting really excited because i definitely wanted to hear more about this.
The Icelandic sounds beautiful, would be appreciated if you add more 'linguistic content' 😌
Why didn’t you explain why you don’t like the healthcare system in Iceland?
Didn’t want to start a riot in the comment section, I honestly just try not to talk about controversial topics on my channel❤️
My guess is that it's underfunded by the government. Very few doctors, specialists and hospitals. Low pay which keeps people from training for healthcare jobs, etc. From an American. :-)
Similar story in the UK tbh dw I think I get the gist of it
@@blewis66112 yeah 100% it's underfunded and severely under manned

Well done you, Hrafna! I bumped into your chanel randomly while I was looking for some info on the Icelandic language and absolutely loved it! Close your ears to everyone who doesn't like you and remember that if you have "haters" it means you're doing a great job! You also look absolutely stunning! Keep up the good job! Looking forward to more and more of your cool videos!
What about "Of Monsters and Men"?
Hrafna your makeup is works like a charm, I think I'm hypnotized a little bit.
6:10 in slavic languages you have that too
bbleh It’s sooo easy to explain though lol
German also uses that gramatical system that you mention, it's really complicated sometimes
Spanish verbs are so fucking difficult that verb can take 50 different endings, but to be honest very few people have problems with verbs
Finnish have 15 (?) Different cases and of corse I can stack them up and add possesion indicators on them and so on. You can get a lot of different forms like that. All the verbs have similar thing going on as well. For example "juoksentelisinko" means "I wonder if I should run around aimlessly" or "koirinenikin" means "even with my dogs"
There are a lot longer and crazier examples but they get too crazy even for native speakers ^^
@@dojacatstanaccount7936 I know... I study Spanish, it is so freaking difficult. Same in Polish. We have only 3 tenses but 7 cases and many moods.
It's crazy. :O
I love not far from London and I agree! I go there for a few hours and you can’t move 😂
Ditto, totally agree.
The destination of my dreams is Iceland! Greetings from Greece!!
We Germany have those 'object causes' too. It is always frustrating to think about it
Poles have a hard time with Polish sometimes too.....haha
Love when you switched to your native tongue to make the point. A very beautiful language. So are tourists less of an impact in Iceland during the colder seasons?

I really understand how you feel towards your country. I watched both part 1 and part 2 of the worst things about living in Iceland. I'm from Malta and I cannot tell you how many times I was like, "SAME". The tourist part really hit close to my heart. Malta thrives on tourism but we receive so many each year that it's becoming too much. We have extremely hot summers as opposite to your winters. We are much smaller than Iceland and we are almost 500,000 people.. I empathize with you, girl! :( Malta is basically the Iceland of Europe but much MUCH smaller....
In German , there is also genetive, Dative, accusative form and I am completely giving up learning this language .
My name is relating to this. I think it's very hard for foreigners to learn my mother-tongue.
In others countries also most people make mistakes in their native language. I think it's totally normal because a language is alive and evolve constantly. It's not related to the complexity of a language. A lot of languages have cases (German, Finnish...) and it's totally possible to learn them :)
BTW your cat is so cute ❤️
Haha well not into Bjork so much , but I love Solstafir ( they are from Iceland too )

Hrafna- I am from the future, I jumped through a wormhole, but I need to get a message to you. In 2020 a virus pandemic (no zombies) will consume the world and stop all travel. Oh I get the tourist thing. Some tourists, mostly Chinese ones, are incredibly rude and have no self awareness in London.
The fact that you can speak it so beautifully is so freaking awesome to a language-head like me :D
In stark contrast to Icelandic, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian have all been extremely leveled out due to centuries of constant contact with both each other and neighboring countries.
Iceland is fantastic! Laugavegur is one of my favorite streets in the world. You go girl!
