- Lydia Jennings is a member of the Huichol (Wixaritari) and Pascua Yaqui (Yoeme) Nations and holds a doctorate in soil microbiology. Her work is dedicated to environmental science and the essential role of Indigenous communities in these spaces. Her hope is to create more inclusive academic and environmental landscapes.
In place of her graduation, which was canceled as a result of the pandemic, Lydia instead celebrated by running 50 miles in honor of the Indigenous scientists and knowledge keepers who came before her. It’s a run to honor the past and present while looking towards the future.

I lived in the Sonoran desert for over 45 years. It's a special & unique place. I miss it but it's getting too hot there.Thank you so much for working to make it better! The Pascua Yaqui are some of the most gentle people I have ever met. Congratulations on your PhD!
Thank you Dr. Jennings, I'm glad there is people like you in the world, it gives me hope.
@7:17 "Oh you only got that because you are Native American", I felt that. It's incredible what having a mentor can do. I feel the same, I need the PhD to have a seat at the table. I applaud the work she's done and completing her PhD. You've got a seat at the table now, Lydia!!
Dr. Jennings has such a powerful story to tell! I am grateful to Patagonia for choosing to highlight a strong female trail runner who has found a pathway to be an environmental leader in her community though her doctoral work and beyond. Cheers to creating healthy rights of passages and 50 mile runs!
Thanks for sharing your journey, Dr. Jennings!
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Love running an soil am studying Horticulture. I have been a runner since I was little. I was a sprinter and one of the fastest girls in my city. On a 4 by 100 relay, we made it all the way to the nationals. I also ran long distance and would be honored to run for this cause and also I have 33% Native American indigenous for Mexico, zacatecs. I also am very passionate to run for this cause, the soil and panting for others. XOXO

Congratulations, Dr. Jennings! Best of luck for your future endeavours as a scientist and a runner - and everything else you decide to do. This was very inspiring to me, as a first-year PhD student who grew up in an indigenous community and who's working on indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing as well. Btw, your dog is very very cute
Amazing Lydia....so inspired by you
Incredible film. More stories like this one need to be told!
Beautiful and moving film, thank you!
Incredible human and story!
Thank you for sharing your journey.
Beautifully done! Congrats to Lydia on her PhD! It's really sad that in this day and age, indigenous people and minorities in general, have to struggle to receive higher and graduate educations. Then also endure negative and ignorant comments. Totally ridiculous.
