Lessons from Jeju | Freediving and Motherhood with Kimi Werner | Patagonia
- Seven months pregnant and apprehensive of the effect motherhood would have on her career as a professional freediver, Kimi Werner took a trip to the island of Jeju in South Korea to meet her heroes, the haenyeo - a group of freediving and fishing women often regarded as Korea’s first working mother’s whose culture dates back centuries.
Expecting her first child, Kimi will explore how the haenyeo represent feminine strength and resilience as a self sufficient sisterhood of diving mothers and grandmothers. As Kimi transitions from a solo underwater adventurist to a mother cultivating a family, she longs to learn from the haenyeo elders - many of which are well into their 70’s and continue to dive.
Join Kimi on her journey in Lessons from Jeju, where she gains a deeper understanding of what it means to pass on her own legacy and learns motherhood for a professional athlete isn’t a roadblock but instead a path forward.

Shout out to Patagonia for sharing "Haenyeo" culture in Jeju Island, South Korea.
Our pleasure!
@Babushkiable Don't you have something better to do with your time? Go scream at the sky somewhere else. What a sad person you are. You could learn a lot about humility and integrity from the wonderful Haenyeo of Jeju. ✌️
Babushkiable boohoo what a miracle that two regions that have had cultural and human exchange for millenniums have similar aspects in their culture. I’ve never seen that before anywhere in the world.
Grow up and read a little more dude. Everything in japan came from china and korea if you wanna think of it that way and japan has no originality of their own. Cultures move and become localized and turn into something else that is their own, just like how things like karate and ramen are very much japanese things although their histories are pretty short.
@Babushkiable Hilarious opinion 🤣
@Babushkiable if you study history of jeju you won't say that there are history of them since 14cen it doesn't came from anything many male are dead cause of sea so girls who left sent to sea. not that it came from something they have to go sea. also it is hard condition of farming so sea was the only answer
I'm a father of four. My wife... oh my, my wife.. this video brought tears to my eyes because she feels very much that her desires have expired, and it breaks my heart. Women are SO STRONG! It's a hidden strength that very few people (men such as myself) can truly empathize with. This made me want to be a better husband, father, and supporter of my wife's dreams and ambitions. Kimi, you're a real hero to me. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to hear this story. Thank you
You sound like a wonderful husband and a great team with your wife, I'm sure with some inspiration she will reignite her desires. 🌊
Likewise.... What the AzulEmu Said... Brilliant 🤙🏽🤙🏽 An Kimi as always envy and inspiration 🙏🏽🐳 Bless these sacred waters and all those whom she embrace . Ah'o
Thank you for your vulnerability…this has spoken to me on many levels…
I first saw them when I was 17, and have been mesmerized ever since. I am now a marine scientist because I was first inspired by them.
How’d you go about becoming one?
this video is the reason why i started freediving and why i’m studying to be a marine scientist
Just waw
That’s amazing. They inspire me to.
Last year I read "Island of Sea Women" by Lisa See. I just stumbled across the novel and it made a huge impact on me for so many different reason....more knowledge about the history of South Korea, the Korean war, that this island and the people exist, and this island has been run by women for decades!!! So beautiful!!! I had tears rolling down my cheek through the whole show. Beautiful story!! Thank you, Patagonia, Thank you, Kimi! Thank you to the haenyeo!!
Thank you so much for watching Molly!
100% if this movie interested you, I also suggest to read Lisa See's book. Beautiful women and great story telling.
I’ve seen that book at a local library here in Canada but never read it. It seems quite interesting. As a South Korean, I’ve never met Haenyeo (sea women) in person nor did I even explore Jeju island deep enough as I only visited for a very short moment. Thank you for sharing your experience with that book.
Mommy I love you and I want to say thank you
Another amazing book on the haenyeo is White Chrysanthemum set in WWII, if anyone is interested in reading more
I can't wait!
me too :)
Still 5 days left. Cannot wait
Really looking forward to this, Kimi!
Super beautiful piece and people. Very inspiring to say the least. Congratulations on your and your husband’s film and baby. 2 babies? Congrats to the rest of the crew and women featured as well!
Kimi Werner it was brilliant kimi, hope you can get back into the water soon :) ❤️
Thanks so much for tuning into the premiere and happy Mother's Day everyone! Hopefully you enjoyed. We'll be going on Instagram Live tomorrow at the same time 5pm PDT with the director Nicole Gormley on the patagonia_surf instagram and Kimi on hers. Send any questions to their instagram accounts that you want hear about!
Can English be added as a CC option please for English-reading Deaf folks?
Oh wow! I'm from Jeju and my grandma used to be haenyeo.
I'm currently living in Dublin and it feels strange to see english speakers talking about something from my hometown haha.
Amazing video tho! thanks for showing this to the world.
Hope everybody here get chance to visit Jeju :)
Wow, I'm from Korea and I've never seen such a cool video about Haenyeos. Great job Patagonia!
Thank you so much!
Jeju is like the only place in Korea with a dialect different enough from the rest of the Korean dialects that I, a Korean, had to read the English subtitles to understand what they were saying.
I had a roomate from Jeju once...and wow I couldn’t understand what she’s saying when she was talking with her friends from there !
Naomii305 hahahah yeah its kinda hard for me to understand too lmao
I had no problem understanding them. It was pretty much standard Korean. The real Jeju dialect is rarely spoken these days.
I lived in Korea for two years and was amazed by the strength of many Korean women. The Haenyeo of Jeju rise to the top of an already impressive body of strong women.

Such a powerful film! These women are the role models our society needs more of
We need this more than ever 🙏💙
@Babushkiable Do you really want to talk about the history between Korea and Japan? Are you serious?
As a woman, mom and landlocked diver, this tender film speaks to me. Know where your food comes from and honor that. Touch the places where the sun kissed your face and be thankful. Most of all, know that being a mom changes you, yes, but for the better and in ways you can only imagine. Happy Mother's Day, and thank you for this, Kimi.
Thanks to Patagonia for showing my hometown!! In Boston, I am missing everything about JEJU so much. I understand every word they are talking to each other. It reminds me of my grandma. How beautiful and friendly they are.
I am in awe. These women are amazing and inspirational.
Such a beautifully made and empowering film. These ladies are legends.
These women seem to be the same age as my mom! After watching this I'm reminded that sometimes men may be stronger in physical strength, but women are almost always tougher. Great vid Patagucci!
This story is one of the most beautiful ones I've seen in a long time. I can relate to the fear of not being this individual anymore, which I know and I love to be and instead just becoming a loving and caring mom. In my opinion, there must be a way to be both at the same time.
Just amazing women and so happy I actually got to see them work in person. Proud to be a part Korean woman.😊
I lived in Korea and love free diving myself! I'm a man but despite that I would love nothing more than to spend the day diving with these amazing Korean woman. Bucket list item for sure, if they'd allow me to go with them
If you liked the video, give the book, 'Island of Sea Women' a chance! Its a wonderful book that goes in depth on the day to day lives of the haenyo as they find balance in diving and motherhood.
As a person who lives in Jeju island,
As a person who has a friend who has a Jeju haenyeo as a mother,
Thank you very much for this movie.
Mother is the one who can be stronger and stronger than anyone else in the world.
And it is Jeju Haenyeo who can feel strong mother.
Also, thank you for showing the beautiful scenery of Jeju so beautifully.
When the pandemic infection of this corona19-virus is over, please come to Jeju and enjoy the beautiful nature.
Although I live in Jeju because of my work, Jeju Island is really beautiful and I want to live for a long time, and it is a recommended travel destination.
Such a wonderful women and Jeju island. Thanks for making this film.
Babushkiable .... Whatever dude!
Babushkiable
Reminder set. On my calendar!!
Teary eyed after watching this. There is so much strength and beauty in what the Haenyeo women do. I pray their tradition lives on. Would love to have the opportunity to meet and dive with them one day. Very inspiring ❤️

This is why I love Patagonia. Thank you guys for everything :)
This is beautiful and inspiring. Thank you
This is simply an outstanding short film. Seen similar documentaries about women divers from South Korea before but this programme was a wonderful piece of filming. I’m passionate about the ocean and was totally absorbed.
Wonderful!!! I’m so inspired by these women. I am 56 years old and feel like I am just getting started in living my best life. There is so much power and beauty and resilience in being fearless, whatever that looks like for each Soul!
We love you kimmy! You will be a great mom, what a experience it will be, passing on what you know:)
