Let's jump right into NVMe! The Dell PowerEdge R730xd has three NVMe solutions: U.2, PCIe, M.2. For the R730, U.2 was not a solution, but with the R730xd, you’re able to use U.2. It will require a special kit that includes a card and a cable. This kit allows you to plug in a total of four, hotswap NVMe drives into the last four bays of the server. The card plugs into a PCIe slot and the cable runs from the card and plugs into the backplane. The U.2 drives can be viewed in iDRAC and in the BIOS. You can install an OS and make a virtual machine. In VMware, you can make the U.2 into a datastore. In terms of PCIe NVMe drives, the PowerEdge R730xd does support this. It is important to note that when using a PCIe NVMe drive, the drive must have Dell firmware. Even if you have a card with Dell firmware, it is still very limited. You cannot install an OS on it and cannot use it in a RAID configuration. It can only be used for extra storage. One thing that is important to be aware of, is making sure that the slot disablement setting in system setup is enabled. If not, the PCIe drive, as well as the U.2 card, and really any PCIe device for that matter, will not be read by the system. The last solution on the list is M.2 NVMe. The R730xd does not have a M.2 connection on the motherboard, so you must purchase a separate PCIe to M.2 adapter that plugs into a PCIe slot. In this video we are using a Supermicro card with two M.2 NVMe drives. Unfortunately, Dell 14th Generation Boss cards are not backwards compatible and will not work with the R730xd or any other 13th gen server. NVMe is ultra fast and offers major speed and performance gains. I’ve been trying the exact same setup but I’ve never been able to get all 4 drives recognised by the server. I have the card in slot 6 with bifurcation set to 4x4x4x4.
Only two drives ever get recognised with this configuration for me.
Any secrets ?

Yes 4 U.2 disk can be connected in slots 20 thru 23
Great video. Is it possible to configure RAID1 on these 2 NVMe SSDs as well. Since a single disk for OS would be a single point of failure.

Good night. Great videos. I have a DELL R720 with NVMe installed on a PCI card. However, I have to do a USB drive to trick to boot to the drives. When I look into the BIOS there is no option for Bifucation. Anyway I can see and use the drives?
You have to upgrade to the latest buos firmware
If I were to install the M.2 PCI card, would I be able to install VMware 7 on either (or both - as a RAID) of these cards and boot directly from them?
Hello, I’m at a loss. I installed the NVME with the PCI card, bifercated the slot and booted the (OS server 2022) and installed onto the nvme, but now the windows boot manager fails to boot! What do I do??
What is the U.2 kit part number?
Unfortunately did not work for me on the PCIe. I got the Supermicro expansion card and two 512 mb ex900+ nvme. I have TrueNAS installed and wanted these to be the mirrored boot instead of my rear bay ssd.
I enabled slot bifercation and could see the memory in the bios - not idrac though.
They weren’t recognized to the boot TrueNAS with. I could see one of the ssd drives in my current TrueNAS.
The main problem though, was my fan speed was at 100% the entire time it was in. Couldn’t change it in the fan settings in idrac either.

I have a question about this video, Im looking to do the pcie card to 4x u.2 solution but I'm confused about something.
I noticed the pcie card is pcie 16x, however the riser you put it in only has pcie 8x slots (though physically a 16x slot). can the pcie card work in 8x?
I want to go with this solution however I noticed that the r730 has limited pcie16 slots available. please help
Good catch. I noticed this too - in the video he installs the pcie card into a slot in the first riser bay, which as you say are all x8, and the only x16 slots are 4 and 6.
Even the Dell documentation doesnt indicate which slots this must be installed into, but after reading the docs and forum threads and my own experimentation (i watched this video and installed it exactly as shown and none of the attached u.2 drives are discovered..), i think i now realize that this card has to go in slot 4 or 6..
I've just bought a 370xd and really want Proxmox and VM's running off Dual M.2 drives running in RAID1.
Is there a way to do this now?
My system has 24 sas drives and 2 rear SSD's but they are only 400GB.
Im looking at using the RAID controller in IT mode and passing through the controller to Proxmox.

dont get the point why bifurcating to 4x4x4x4 when you only install two NVMEs in the slot? Wouldnt 8x8 speed this up a lot?
