Regarding performing better getting you a harder pairing: That can happen in football too in knockout competitions like the champions league or in the world cup.
Basically (as i'm sure you guys know) in the world cup there are generally 8 groups and 4 teams per group (though i think this has either changed now or will change). After each team has played each other once the 2 teams with the most points (3 for win, 1 for draw, 0 for loss -> which i think would be great for all chess 'league' formats as it were, where point total decides the tournament victor, titled Tuesday would be interesting to see with a 3 1 0 format)
If you finish in first in your group, you will play someone in second in a different group... however due to the way the groups are formed (and the nature of football itself being a low scoring game so theres more likely to be variance in expected and actual outcomes) you could end up with a 'worse' team finishing top of the group.
In the champions league we get around that by having draws at every round so you don't know exactly which team you're playing, but in the world cup its all planned out so you know specifically which 2 teams you could play if you're through.
So for example: if USA could either finish first or second in their group at the next world cup, they could be due to play either Spain or Iran, lets say - Iran in this case had a good run and knocked out a stronger team to get 2nd place.
Its probably in the USA's interest to top the group anyway, as typically the best teams win, but not always.
If Iran did manage to top their group, and spain came second for example... you'd probably rather play Iran still on balance, despite them topping their group and so it would PROBABLY be in the USA's interest to finish second.
Obviously it's more complicated than I'm making it, but what Fabi was saying reminded me of how the world cup works - it is weird and I can't help but feeling that the players would have similar thoughts that Fabi explained was going through his head.

Just let the guy that finishes first select not from the bottom half (5th-8th) but from all non-selected (2nd-8th) and skip everyone already picked until you have all the pairings. For instance, if third place prefers to play against 4th more than against the two remaining (5th and 6th for instance) you let him play the 4th place, and 5th ends up playing with 6th.

I think Fischer Random or Chess960 sound more technical and intimidating, like you need to be really experienced to play them. Freestyle just sounds like an easy variant and more inviting. Though I do feel like I sound stupid or inaccurate saying Freestyle. 😆
I prefer Freestyle over normal chess as it becomes more about understanding the game instead of pure memorization to get an advantage. I mean to watch GMs spend 30 minutes on the first 4-5 moves alone is astounding. We also see pawn structures that you don't normally see since it could be good to play f3/f6 if you have a bishop on g1/g8.

Shuffle chess was first proposed by a Dutch Chess Enthusiast in 1792. The first recorded games are from 1842. The first tournament was played in 1851.
When Fischer was staying with the Polgars in 1993 he mentioned the idea to Lazlo thinking he had invented it. Lazlo showed him a 1910 book that proposed the exact same. Fischer changed the rules of how you shuffle the pieces so that he could say that he invented it (king placement between the rooks, never same colored bishops)
Of course I understand all USA citizens want to call it Fischerrandom. The rest of us should know that Fischer does not have intellectual property of shuffling the pieces before playing.

The way to make this format work is to invite 12 players. 22 round robin blitz games each (b+w against for all 11 opponents) to determine single elimination seeds. Top seed gets two byes to the classical formatted semifinals, but is nominally the 1 seed in the classical quarterfinals. Seeds 2-4 receive a bye to the quarterfinals as seeds 2-4. 5 and 6 face the winners of 9/12 and 10/11 rapid play-ins, with the 5 drawing the worst remaining player. Winner of 5/p-i and 6/p-i rapid matches get a seat in the quarterfinals. 7/8 directly pair off in Rapid for the 7th and final seat in the quarterfinals, with 7 getting to choose if they start the match as white or black. Seats 5-7 are re-seeded according to how they performed during round robin (so if 12 beat 9 and 5, they enter the quarterfinals as the worst seed: 7.)
With this system, you accomplish a few things:
    - More round robin games means the best players are more likely to win the group, which will reduce the odds of randomly running into Magnus as a mid-seed.
    - Each seed is more valuable than the one above it:
    -- 1 is a well-earned gift
-- 2-4 get byes and the re-seeded remainders in the quarterfinals
-- 5 and 6 get the play-in winners, with 5 getting the easier pairing
-- 7 and 8 face one another, but avoid an additional play-in by being above 9th. 7 gets black/white order preference in h2h with 8.
    -- 9 gets easiest pairing in play-ins
    - It's a tremendous amount of content for viewers
    - Leans into "freestyle" by using blitz time controls in the round robin, rapid up until the quarterfinals, and classical for the remainder.
I would also stagger the blitz game start times by a few minutes, so the viewers get a never-ending stream of opening/middlegame/endgame simultaneously. This would also let the players on later boards see how other players started their games, giving the player kicking off board 6 each day the most information. This asymmetry seems interesting and for that reason, I'd introduce some parity in the round robin by forcing the current leader to be board one each day. Best remaining player (if not playing leader) on board two. And so on. The winner of round robins will have earned that bye to the semis.

Chess960 or 9LX or especially freestyle don't give much/any information, while Fischer Random both honors the GOAT and at least tells you something is random about the setup. Yeah, Fischer is the GOAT. i kind of think they could have honored Fischer a bit more in the whole proceedings. there wasn't as much as a placard at the venue or mention or a still picture on the broadcast. not really to appeal to his ego (RIP) but just to be like, hey, this is Fischer's idea, isn't that neat?

The one thing that really pissed me off about the event was that they didn't show the OTB board. They had a big giant on screen board and big giant commentator pictures. and all they showed was a little screen of the players faces off to the side with weird hard to see angles of pieces of the board. Drove my OCD insane! I was furious and wanted to break my computer monitor. You are not going to get the game popular like that. I'd rather watch one of these low budget streamers playing OTB in the parks or clubs. My dream as a fan would be the commentators having ability to draw arrows right on the players board, and maybe even move the pieces in some graphical cgi way lol. Regardless, keep your analysis board out of the view of them making their own moves! period.

Howzit from South Africa! Hope Freestyle chess is coming to RSA! So many spectacular settings and venues for the event and opportunities for public exhibitions, including with sport celebrities (RSA outdoor and sport crazy country).
Also hope organisers continue with some of the innovations and especially don't listen to just the super chess geeks / purist, but some great ideas on social media to improve coverage, commentary and just get more eyeballs and engagement from general public.
IMHO less analysis board playing / solving by commentators. Continue to use arrows and explain basic strategic and tactical choices - leave some tension / drama in it playing out - instead of playing everything out on board. Get guest commentators, silence and moving on the other games is okay. Use 3rd commentator at analysis board not only for deep dives, but recalling previous games, classic games, explaining tactics / strategy, player profiles & statistics, chess move database insight (even not related to specific players) and just overall look at how other sports balance entertainment, drama, narrative with discription, explaining and technical analysis - it is actually also not very deep or too analytical - since that is not the level of engagement 95% of people want...or actual engage at...(many on say chess reddit claim they do...but reality...)

6:10 magnus dominating in engine era where its harder to dominate
highest classical rating of all time , 2882 , live 2889
highest ever rapid rating of all time, 2926
highest ever blitz rating of all time 2986
    125 unbeaten classical game streak
    10+ years world champion
first triple crown, did 3 times.
    Fischer random event win
Do not discredit world rapid and blitz since it wasn't a thing during Kasparov's time, its not Magnus' fault, its harder to win it than classical, so many good players. For example Hikaru is a blitz god and he has -0 titles.
won every major event INCLUDING world cup
won the Wijk an Zee which is the most prestigious event in classical 8 times, Kasparov won it 3 times and Anand won it 5 times ( its being held since 1900s )
equally dominating all formats including OTB and online
Most consecutive NUMBER 1 in classical chess, passed Kasparov :)
only world champ who is undefeated in title matches
    and so on...
these are some of the things where Carlsen passes Kasparov, there are not only rapid blitz but also classical achievements. Today's era is so much challenging , more than old time, even as for now Magnus played more game than Kasparov.
only thing Kasparov has over Carlsen is TOTAL longevity ( which Carlsen can pass ) and total world classical titles which is 1 more, but 2 split ones so its controversial.
With all these if you still say magnus aint 1st in goat conversation, its because you are hating. Even if magnus last 100 years #1. all the big players such as Hikaru and Kramnik and other juniors says that Magnus is the goat.
and one more thing, if you care so much about longevity then you should never mention Fischer in top 3 and you should say that Lasker is the GOAT.

It is not the future. The reason: Standard chess is already difficult enough for the average/above average player. Patterns and openings hep guide them. When it comes to 'freestyle'...this is just another situation where chessplayers have one trade - moving around wooden pieces and the elite will go wherever someone is willing to throw their money. But...that's not the case for 99% of chess players. So, no.
