As a child, I attended with my parents an auction where, for a modest sum, they purchased a grand lot of hundreds of books. Once all the books were transported home, my parents selected from among them the antique books they most wanted to keep. Next, they sent me out along our neighborhood sidewalks with my siblings and wagons full of the remaining books, calling out, "books for sale!" Many special memories were made meeting the neighbors this way, and learning a great deal about the books we had in tow, and I gained a great appreciation for books of all sorts, so this video was of great value to me. Perhaps my love for books is what also lead me to write a book of my own, which I am in the process of getting put into a hard bound version. Thank you for the information on book etiquette! 📚

John Gay is still well-known for "The Beggars' Opera", turned into "The Three-penny Opera" by Bertold Brecht, often performed.

Dear Royal Butler. You have quite a few subscribers now so not to worry about how fast you reply to people. The etiquette of reading a book = use a bookmark, don't just turn down the corner of the page. Don't put a book face down and open as it damages the spine, especially on paperbacks. You can make temporary dust jackets from brown paper or wrapping paper or even wallpaper offcuts. Any valuable books need to go to an expert book conservor. A book of poetry, you old romantic. You would have loved Lord Byron.

My bookshelves are full yet I can't resist buying more books! I appreciate the cleaning tips as I have some old books (not quite as old as yours) that could use a good dusting. And of course, I always enjoy seeing the Royal Dachshunds and their thoughts!

My understanding is that Princess Katarina is a great niece of the queen. You have described her today as a cousin, in other videos as niece.

    • @TheRoyalButler
      @TheRoyalButler  2 роки тому +5

Mary you are quite right. She is a niece through the late Prince Philip and a cousin via both sets of parents. She’s descended from Queen Victoria’s second eldest son and second eldest daughter. So both a niece and cousin to Queen Elizabeth.

Off topic: I once asked if you had any stories about staff refusing to go into certain areas of the Palace or one of the Castles, because the felt a restless presence? Have you ever heard that someone thought they may have seen a ghost?
I once heard a rumor that the Queen had a priest pray/cleanse a room at one of her Castles because staff were frightened to go in.
You could do a fireside chat about this on one of your videos. I bet it would be fascinating. Love your channel, Lassie..x

I still enjoy watching this episode. John Gay is indeed burried in Westminster Abbey and the epitaph on his tomb reads:
„Life is a jest, and all things show it,
I thought so once, but now I know“

Dear RB and Fellowship of the Dachshunds,
I love books, old and new. Lately am reading Beverley Nichols "Laughter on the Stairs", first published 1953. But before that, one must first read "Merry Hall".
I also greatly enjoy the "Peculiar Crimes Unit" series by Christopher Fowler.
"Lassie": I fully agree. Some pleasant ghost stories concerning the royal family might be particularly intriguing. I am especially fond of the ravens at the Tower of London. They have seen it all and are very wise.

This is one of my favorite UA-cam channels. Very articulate, distinctive, gracious, and CLASSY! Your channel is my link to the happenings with the British Royal Family, especially Queen Elizabeth. I have subscribed to numerous British, Scottish, and Irish news sources. My favorite is The Telegraph. Keep on keeping on as we say in America. You are doing a good job and you are providing a valuable service.

My entire house is filled with books. I was given a box of old books and my favorite ones are locked in an antique cabinet. O'Henry and a book with a collection of rare ghost stories. One of my oldest books was stolen, hence this is why I have my collection locked up. Thank goodness I DON'T keep them upright. My Churchill collection put me back a bit in the pocket book.
QUESTION: How do you politely say to someone that you don't let people borrow your books?...that's how one of my rare books was stolen.

I know an elderly person who owns a house that has a concrete basement, much like a bunker.
You would think that he would have used that basement to store his doomsday food and water, or some gold and silver bullion bars.
But no, he uses the basement to store his huge collection of 40,000 books collected over a period of 50 or more years.
This person is now over 80 years of age, and he's still hanging onto all his books!

If you have an important collection of precious books or documents. Make arrangement with a frozen storage warehouse and a transport company capable of transporting frozen goods a head. If for any reason you have a major water disaster and your collection is wet, the first step is to freeze them as soon as possible and keep them in that state until you could get them treated by a restoration company. It's really important to do it quickly before they start to rot or get infested by mildew.

I just finished Miss Angela Kelly's 2nd book on the Queen and started a magazine on the life of the Queen. These both will sit on the shelf grouped with my books on classic men's style, manner books, and butler books. Many of my books get read while in the tub or on the bus, though my more expensive books are read at home in the living room. If one is to borrow a book, always wash and dry your hands before touching, don't bend corners, don't put them near any drinks, and return as soon as read. I'd be interested in your thoughts on how to get mold smells out of books. Sometimes you can't smell the mold while in the thrift store or old bookstore until you get home. Is all lost or can such books be saved?
