I bought the little brother of this bag, the flipside 350 aw, a few months ago. So far I'm really pleased. It isn't as weather sealed and you do need to use the raincover. I think the zipper in the back flap is for a tablet, I do use the memory card slots.
I don't have as much room for extra clothing, but so far I like it.
Ah nice. This one might not be that weather sealed but it seems to do a pretty good job to not have to worry about it.
Yea maybe, I can't see my taking a tablet up a mountain but it might come in handy for daily use. As long as you have the essentials you should be good!
Good review! super polite and ironic, I was expected some jokes about dead during an exploration combine with the quality of the equipment. Love the British approach.
To sum up - I have one of these and a Lowepro Photo Trekker. I use the Whistler 99% of the time. The Trekker only if I need to carry stupid amounts of kit. So far I have not had any issues at all with it. Not one thing. My only tiny, tiny, tiny gripe would be that the waist belt may not tighten sufficiently for really thin people - I don't fall into that category!

Nice to see a review actually done in the field with the bag in use and not brand new on a desk and untested. Not much chance of me making it up Coniston Old Man in an hour, but then I'm an old man too. I've had a quite a few Lowepro bags over the years, and they have always provide pretty good quality although their range seems to have gotten a little quirky these days. The Whistler however, seems seems like a well designed bag, and good bags cost a bob or two, but you can spend plenty a lot more on others. If it gets many years of use then it's probably money well spent. My first really good backpack cost me £220 which I thought a fortune at the time, but I got the best part of 8 years use out of it. Great simple honest review.
I'm not a fan of those reviews either, they're worthless without a few weeks/months of real life experience in my opinion. You get what you pay for with some things though, I'm onto my 3rd year with this now I think so when you divide it up it's pretty reasonable. A £70 bag might have only lasted 1 year anyway

6:20 the inner zipper lid is great if you want to take the padded divider system out (eg to swap into the Highline 400 AW roller case) and use the bag as just large storage.
The Whistler is too heavy for my use therefore I decided for the Flipside Trek BP 450 AW! :D

I found all the reviews useless when I looked into getting the bag so glad you like this style too, hopefully, there will be more reviews soon!
After some years of using this backpack I came across three major issues, first one is that I can't carry lens wood (no space for it), second is the box inside is to rigid and low flexibility and third is you have space for your camera and drone but there is no space left for the accessories (chargers, batteries, etc.). My next acquisition will be a 50L Backpack as this one is too small. My gear 5DMIV body, Tamron 15-35, Canon 24-70, Canon 100-400, Mavic Pro Platinum+remote+DJI Cristalsky 5" and Haida 150mm filter Holder System+filters.

Nice review Adam, I'm glad you finally found a backpack you are happy with.
A mate of mine has the slightly smaller version of your bag (I think it's the 300 or 350) and is really pleased with it. Like most of the Lowepro range, it's really well built using quality materials and the cover is included, unlike the F-Stop range where you have to buy the cover separately.
I have had a few Lowepro backpacks and have always been delighted with them. I usually find that they are well thought out and well designed. The only drawbacks with the Whistler (pointed out by you) are the weight and price but you really do get a quality bag.
Re the weight, this is something that was pointed out to me, try and adjust the straps so that the waist belt takes most of it rather than your shoulders. It can take a few minutes of adjusting but, and I can vouch for this, if you set the straps up correctly you will feel next to nothing on your shoulders which is apparently how all backpacks should be worn. I adjusted mine and it makes a huge difference and is also so much more comfortable on longer walks.

Yea the 350 looks good as well, I don't think I'd be able to fit the 400mm attached the camera on that one though so ended up with the bigger one. I imagine it's made the same just slightly smaller
They do seem pretty good, I think you get used to the weight after a little bit. I winged in the video but I don't really know it's there most of the time when it's on my back. You definitely know it's there when your near the end of the day though ha

Definitely try altering your harness straps to allow the weight to be transferred to the waist belt/hips as it really does work. It is how soldiers can carry Bergen's weighing around 80 lbs for miles at a time.

Great, detailed review, Adam! I've been looking at this for myself. I've recently got a Fuji X-T2 system and the whole setup is a lot smaller than my old Canon gear, so I think I could fit most of what I used to carry in a Pro Tactic 450 in this one.
As for that flap you showed that works as an extra cover inside, I think that's the cover for the camera insert that I think you can actually take out.

Cheers! Yea, it's comfortable, done a few hundred miles in it, most the time you don't know it's there. Not sure about other outdoor bags, used a walking bag with a smaller bag stuffed inside it before this. This is way comfier than what I used to use

No problem! Took it out on a commercial shoot today and strapped light stands etc to the side. Took 1 trip to the car rather than 2-3 which was an added bonus, depends on what you shoot

Picked this bag up today, my previous bag was not rear opening so putting down on the ground was a pain! Always getting my jacket dirty!
I wouldn't go back to a front loading bag now, pretty much everything is better about it! Hope you like the bag!
Adam Kappa It's a fantastic bag but sadly for me I find the inner compartment to tight! I have the Sigma 150-600 and several other lenses as well as the 70-200 but it's a tight squeeze to fit them all in. If the inner shell was more flexible I think it would be perfect! Opted for the Lowepro Flipside 500 AW II.. soon find out if it's optimal for my needs.

the straps of my current bag are broken :/ thank god that my stuff was ok. i have two bags from lowepro (flipside sport 15l aw and the nova sport 35l aw) but over the time i got more gear and stuff. so i decided to buy the whistler, but i don't now which one? the 350 or the 450? finally i made my decision :D (y) thank you very much for this awesome review of this backpack adam!

Adam I think the large flap from the bottom allows the camera storage compartment to be removed from the bag.

I'm 5"5 and this bag end up being way too heavy for me but the quality is there no question about that.
Your legs will get used to it, it just takes a week or 2 to build them up

Hiya Adam, have you ever considered lighter equipment. I invested in some very light camping equipment a couple of years ago but kind of defeated the object by carrying a 5D III , lenses, tripod etc, so heavy!!!
Decided to try a 4/3 system with a 7-14, 12-40 and a 40-150 pro lenses, cracking kit and much much lighter. Have you ever considered that as an option for landscape photography at height.
Nice bag though but expensive, still you get what you pay for I guess.

Hi John, I haven't really looked at any new equipment as my bank account says no haha this bag wiped out most of the fun things fund. I've had to take the cheap route and filled my old bag with weights and I squat and climb stairs with it so my legs have got used to the weight now ha
Sounds like we've had similar experiences though, camping has been off the cards until I can carry the tent (and everything else) somewhere decent. I'll check out those cameras out of curiosity though, might be fun to compare the 2

Hi Larry, Cheers! Yea I just had a look and there's the standard tighten/loosen ones at the bottom (you can sort of see them hanging down at 9:44)
There's one at the top of the strap as well to fine tune it. I don't want to mess around with it as the bag is comfy and I always make these things worse. It looks like it just changes the angle that the strap sits at so you can change it for your body shape

I'm not sure sorry! I pretty much always fill this one so haven't looked for smaller. There might be something on their website though!

It´s a little bit small inside isn´t it ?
I´m a little bit disapointed when comparing the external size with other backpacks (like the ones from F-Stop) and see how much less you can get into this Whistler. Is this because of it´s sturdy construction that takes so much space for the frame ?
Never had a problem with the size, fits all my winter gear and food / drink in. Always packs more than I end up using. We might might different needs though I guess
The hard case only really effects the camera bit, the front is soft

I would've thought with such a large bag it would've had a larger camera compartment. It doesn't look like it has room for a 70-200 and a 150-600. I have the Mindshift Backlight 26L and everything fits. Did you look at Fstop gear?
It holds quite a bit but because it's more of a hard case for skiing etc you can't cram as much in - I struggle to fit that 135mm in with the lens hood in reverse.
Most days I have the 5d with 24-70, 7d with 400 5.6, 135mm loose, Lee ND holder plus filters, CPL filters and that pretty much fills the camera bit, I think the 150-600 might be bigger so it might not fit attached to the body ( I'm just guessing)
I had a look at the fstop stuff but it seemed just as expensive and not as protective, I've fallen pretty hard twice now and the bag/equipment handled that no problem unlike my neck and leg so I'm pretty happy with it

The Mindshift bag looks good, the camera bit definitely looks bigger but that makes the day gear compartment smaller so there's pros and cons to both . Maybe one day they'll make a bag that ticks all the boxes
You're right on the compartments. The Mindshift has less room for jackets, etc. I don't carry a laptop in the field so that's where a light jacket will go. And yea, the Fstop is more money but not as sturdy like you'd want. I think it has the extra room too. But thanks for the review and the response.
Yea that seems to be the main difference. I cant work out why you'd need a laptop up on the fells, it's never crossed my mind to take one so a jacket pocket is more useful.

I fit in a 5d4, 24-70, 16-25, 70-200, microphone, mavic pro, controller, batteries, ND filters, cleaning kits just in the back compartment alone. Also fit a sleeping bag, hiking pillow, sleeping mat, food and water for two days and a tripod. Not sure what else you'd need for a photo/video trip. I can even bring up my Ronin if I'm not bring some of the camping gear.

Very nice review,can i ask if someone knows....i am between this bag and tilopa of f-stop,can you take out as e separate the icu with your gear in airport flight for example? If yes then Lowepro will be my choice as i am very happy with other products like Flipside that i love.
Cheers, apparently the bit I wasn't keen on at 6:24 is to zip up the compartment to take out the camera part for going on planes etc. I haven't tried that though (and don't want to take my bag to bits as it's currently comfy and loaded up) but maybe someone might see this that has taken it on a plane before

Cheers. No it doesn't, not really sure why you'd want a laptop when you're up in the mountains though. Think I'd like it less if it had one as it would make it less versatile
There's easily enough room to fit a laptop though, would probably need a case though

Travelling for 1 month in japan and 1 month in vietnam. Im looking for a bag to carry both clothes and my camera equipment. This may be hard for you to give an opinion but im looking to bring like 2 pairs of shorts, a pair of trousers, maybe 5 t-shirts. one jumper, windproof/rainproof jacket. and casual accessories: i.e tooth brush etc. Will this be possible with this bag? cant find a proper travel camping camera bag to suit my needs. Hope u can help.

+Tommy Memed Hi Tommy how much camera gear are you taking? I think it probably would be alright, it might be pretty brutal carrying this for 2 months though with the weight though. I can get all of what was in the video plus food and more clothes. You can strap stuff to the outside aswell, it'll probably be a bit less safe there though.

+Tommy Memed camera gear would be no problem, I reckon if you had some way of protecting the laptop you could out it into the camera section as well so it's harder to steal. Hopefully the photos hive you a better idea of size though!

A laptop compartment would be a waste of space. I've never needed a laptop on top of a mountain.
Look at the Pro Tactic or the Pro Runner backpacks instead. Less room for non-camera equipment on those, though. In this bag, the room goes to trekking equipment. I guess you could put a backpack in the big front compartment.
