What's your favourite feature here? Do you think you will buy this?
the inputs for sure, since i have at least 3 stereo and 2 mono signals i always incorporate. I'm torn when it comes to the choice between a mixer and this though. a mixer works standalone independently of your daw and you can easily adjust input volumes. this seems to be a better option for someone who records drums like you named. /Ed
As an individual who is most likely going to upgrade from my Scarlett Focus rite ASAP,
I will definitely add this unit to the list of serious consideration.
Thanks for the great presentation and all !
Bravo
hi, can it do 5.1 surround when watching netflix?
Crazy pricing! While others are pushing up prices, Audient is pushing down on price, pushing up on quality and features.
I call that a healthy competitive market. I do wonder what the profit margins are on these units 🤔
Damn you, Mike - I STILL can't compete with your B-ROll! Lol! Beautiful overview as always!
Thanks for a super-clear tour of this product, Mike! It looks like great value for money!
Thanks Peter - TBH, I left some other good stuff out!
Great video, looks like an amazing product, and yes, that price is unbelievable. Nice one. Great for drummers.
And singers with a small group :P
This is amazing! Lots of bang for the buck. Great Demo! Stay Safe My Friend!
Thank you man. Always good to see you around here :)
I bought one. I’m used to UAD Apollo so a was prepered for a step down. But it actually holds up very well - I’m very surprised! And happy! Now I have 8 preamps! :)
Lolol Mike! This was a good prank! When I saw "has Audient lost its mind?" in the title, I thought you were going to slam them because of some really bad omission, design or functional failure. So I held my breath until the end of the video when you relieved us with your conclusion. Fantastic presentation as usual.
Unrelated: my favorite electronic composer ever has passed away. Rest in peace, Vangelis😔
Indeed - Vangelis is one of the very greats :(
I see you have the Discrete8 in the back there. I have worked for Antelope Audio for 4 years of my life and I am happy to say that I having finally moved forward to using Audient, RME and TC Electronic proved to be far better for my workflow and productivity.
Surely the antelope is a much better interface than anything audient make.
@@ragebait988 for sure not, antelope interfaces in recent years are bug ridden. Some people have no problems but many have huge problems with the stability.
Amazing bit of kit, especially at that price!
Face it - you need one :P
Thanks Mike! WOW! Amazing kit. How the recording world changes so rapidly, nowadays. Mike is part of my budgeting plan, has been for a while - and articles like this he always makes clear, concise, but mostly compelling. Nothing more important than the preamble to recording, and this piece of kit helps retain that 'moment of zen' before setting sail on another composition without the snags and drags musicians are so accustomed to. The price is balm to jaded wallets. Thanks Mike! You just saved everyone $1,000....
Planning to get two of these to run my future atmos system. The dynamic range is unmatched at this price point
Excellent review Mike, as usual. I love your meter led bars dude!
thank you audient wow what a deal I was just looking to upgrade my interface for my project recording studio and this is a Godsend!
"Hold that thought" wasn't long enough - so I had to hit "pause" 😎 - thanks for the review 👍 - "Like" doesn't hurt I swear if anything a slight amount of joy - so hit it folks !!!
LOL - but honestly, what was your thought?
@@CreativeSauce I think if I was in the market for an interface I would be giving this one some serious looks
Most delightful "click-bait" heading, asking if Audient has "lost its mind!!!" Looking at the price of electronics, More For Less has been the mantra for a couple of decades now. And so it continues with the Evo 16! I for one love my Evo 8 and am just a home singer so I surely don't need the 16. But professionals surely do. I guess a USB interface absolutely won't give adequate power to the 16 as compared to the 8 so that is understandable, but it is the same reason I won't bother to move up to a 16. I love sitting at my dining table, with my battery powered laptop which powers the Evo 8 and sing/record. Thanks, Mike!
Great video, I think I'm still in shock? looks amazing! I think I must have one!
Wow, that's incredible.
Too many inputs for you?
@@CreativeSauce Yep. And also too big to fit in my space 🙂
Something i nearly got caught out by thats worth noting - the Focusrite 18i20 you highlighted as the cheapest 24 channel option is 18 channel, it has 2 ADAT I/O sets but only uses one of them unless you are in 88.2k or higher, it is limited to 8 channels of ADAT I/O.
Nice but does it have MIDI jacks?
One feature I also like on this unit- IEC mains means power supply integral to the unit….no wall wart…..however, it isn’t a travelling device as the USB C conduit does not power it, which some people would like. You can’t have everything!! Although Audient have tried…..
Yup, exactly!
Awesome review. Very comprehensive. And based on the "Shocking" details, I think this may become a serious player in the market...
I have no doubt!
Well, it was more of an ad than a review.
In what way?
@@CreativeSauce Mostly in the way that it failed to address the strengths or weaknesses of the product. Actually, if you review it as an 8 in/out at £400 product then it actually looks quite a decent buy.
@@jarlathmurphy5419 I like to be honest. And I didnt find that there were any real weaknesses. Making them up would just be dishonest.
Strengths. Hmmm, was I not clear that I thought smart gain is a strength? Or that the price is a strength?
But I do agree, it's not a review, I prefer to give people the information and decide for themselves. For example, some people only do voice-overs, in which case, this many preamps is a negative. It's up to them to decide.
But it isn't an ad. If it is I'd like to get paid. Which I didn't! Firstly, I wasn't paid in money. Secondly, yes, the unit was given to me, but given that I already have around 15 audio intefaces, that's of no benefit to me. That's why I'll probably just give it to someone.
Nice review Mike - looks like a really well thought out bit of kit!
It is! Cheers Joe :)
Yaa...I saw their official video the day it was launched....I am struggling with a two input Focusrite 2i2 now...Was thinking of going for EVO8....But now that EVO16 is here.....I think It is a total game changer... Waiting for it to arrive in the Indian Markets
This will be the next device i'm going to buy for drums recordings
You took me by surprise !
Wow, this comes quite close to my favourite audio interface. I mean, 8 (all front-mounted) MIC inputs/2 x HI-Z, ADAT I/O, S/PDIF I/O, selectable clock source, 2 independent headphone outs, 2 main and 8 line outs and standalone mode to use the preamps without the computer attached. If it is, however, it is given 5-pin MIDI connectivity from the TAC-8's rear, too.
Attracted to Smart Gain? But preferably from Software for yet more covenience? Just use the Auto Gain buttons in the mixer software for whichever of the eight inputs you want. And while you have the software open, add a little reverb from the onboard DSP when the lead singer complains about their dry monitor mix.
There's one tradeoff, though: This interface is Thundernolt, but it only runs on intel-based Macs. No Sillycon (no offense; I like my MBA M1 a lot) or Windows support. Now did you figure out what I was babbling about? The one and only ZOOM TAC-8, mates!
It has been discontinued way tooo early, but still runs with my Big Sur i7 MBP. No equivalent yet affordable piece of hardware in sight except maybe (if looking backward) the Presonus Studio 192 (do you still use it, Mike?) which I'm still looking for among the pre-loved gear,
The TAC-8's RRP was around 600 € in 2015. I grabbed mine new for only 300 in a 2020 sale.
did you end up with a new TB3 interface or USB?
@@AnalogFlava Hi there, a ZOOM TAC-8 and a UAC-8 are still my flagship devices (chainable via ADAT for a total of 16 channels). It's good to have them handy should I ever need many simultaneous inputs (maybe for a synth jam). But to be honest: What I've been using most the past few weeks is the ZOOM R4 both as a stand-alone recorder and an audio interface. It was a pleasure to get rid of my old-fashioned IK Multimedia iRig HD and use the modern, flexible and utterly capable R4 MultiTrak device instead. Since I mostly deal with 1- or 2-channel setups at the moment, it's the perfect match. In contrast to my iRig HD. The R4 doesn't have MIDI support, but in the golden days of USB MIDI and affordable host devices this is not an issue at all. As for TB3 or USB: PreSonus dropped all but one of their Thunderbolt audio interfaces from their portfolio. Antelope and UA still stick heavily to the superfast technology but diversify as well. Thomann Germany list 35 TB vs. 300+ USB interfaces devices (23 Aug 2024; B-Stock not considered). Seems to be the trend. But this doesn't necessarily mean it's the better choice 😊 All the best👋
Behringer UMC 1820 is another great value 8 in 8 out, also with x2 headphones and the adat/spdif. However it also has MIDI which is great for old midi gear if you don't use a USB controller. You can pick them up for about £179 in UK so it's a super budget value rack mount. This one looks the business though
Agreed. I don't wanna talk Behringer down, as I know people who had great experiences with them, but I suspect the premps don't compare - and not quite the same spec for i/o.
@@CreativeSauce I can attest that my Behringer 1820 sounds just as clean as my band mate's Focusrite interface, and I am pretty sure has lower latency. I totally get that Behringer isn't always searching for the highest quality products in many areas, but this interface is absolutely a good piece of gear for a crazy price. You should try it out. I think you would be genuinely surprised by it's performance.
@@CreativeSauce yes its more of a super budget for real skin flints like me. They improved it with the dedicated iso drivers so it's stable on cakewalk. I actually use it quite often and your are right because I go into spdif to bypass preamp from my Boss studio which as built in vintage preamps, compression, filters and gates etc.
@@CreativeSauce I bought 2 1820s from Behringer and they refused to send me the signal flow charts for them. I thought, really? Look online, the signal flow charts are nowhere to be found. Behringer said they only give signal flow charts to their, "partners" (whatever that means). Have you ever bought a mixer without a signal flow chart? I have two of them now. Go ahead, talk Behringer down... 😁 I went out and bought an RME Fireface UXC II, I use the Behringers as doorstops.
Evo 16 or apogee duet3? For recording mix and master?!
Thanks
In the UK we have a price of £399.00 from Studiospares. Audient have certainly created a great piece of equipment for today's world economy. Congratulations Audient.
I think companies have to release cheaper but still fully features gear with rising inflation, food, gas and energy prices around the world. People have less to spend and Evo 16 audio-interface might be a product for it´s time. I think Evo 16 is a winner!
I own one. I used it for a drum session and was impressed!!! I have a octopre as a temp expander but I want o get something else later to make a total of 24 inputs!!
Thanks for the information, quality video indeed. I am curious about the conversion quality. Dynamic range is very promising with 121 DB, I would love to hear some side to side tests.
wao! it has awesome advances ... the price is really cheap for 8 physical inputs and outputs and more digitals . I am waiting my pre order for arturia audiofuse 8pre but Know i'm thinking about evo 16. Two different animals! thank you!
Thanks man - either would be great :)
How do you think the pre amps will compare to the iD series?
No DSP is a major oversight as reverb in the monitor headphones is a must have when recording vocals.
differences in terms of sound, dac etc with their id44 MK2?
I am buying on for sure !!!
You'll love it!
@@CreativeSauce I am sure, I had already and Audient ID14 and it was solid ! this just atracted me !!!
Are the preamps the same as in the ID-series?
Whats the round trip latency specs?
So good, I have a Apollo Twin X, once I compare quality, I might add one of these or even replace the Universal Audio one for some extra inputs and sweet UI.
... can I be honest with you? Yes, this is cool, and yes, that's a great deal; however, keep in mind the Evo line isn't the professional line of Audient product, and quite frankly, as a sound engineer, I cannot recommend that over, or even in comparison, to an Apollo Twin X or anything by Universal Audio. It's amazing for the price, but it definitely isn't Universal Audio quality, and it doesn't have any plug-in processor inside, which is the whole point of UA... no sure of your logic here, with all due respect.
roland studio capture and roland octo capture has a smart gain as well as digi comp in them. they are in sweetwater.
I stand corrected, thank you!
How converters hold against the Audient ID series?
Great Video Mike, can you tell me if the Evo 16 can provide a Vocalist some reverb in the monitor whilst still recording a dry signal.
Great review. Are the JFET preamps (1 & 2) compatible with condenser mics using the 48v phantom power? Or are they just for instruments?
I wonder does the smart gain feature only work on the native inputs or will it also work on the expanded inputs via ADAT?
It wouldn't make sense if it did... preamp gain is an analog feature, and ADAT is a digital input.
The biggest thing that is hard to ignore is the ADAT i/o. It's hard to find any interfaces that have even 1 channel of adat in AND out much less two, for under 1k. The next most comparable interface seems to be the Motu 828ES, and I'm left trying to find information about the A/D conversion comparison. The Motu has the ability to be a standalone mixer as well, but the Audient is carrying 90% of the features for 1/2 the price. If you wanted to do a comparison, that would be an interesting video.
A lot of presonus FireWire interfaces had adat out and in, focusrite octapre, art tube opto8.
Do you know when they will release this Evo 16...not avail at Sweetwater...
I believe it will be around 4 weeks.
This and 2 behringer 8200s will be all I need😂😂
Great Vid Mike astounded by the amount of features for the price Focusrite watch out!! I've no doubt that this product will make a big impact when it lands..
It looks awesome. Can they be chained?
To another interface by ADAT - I imagine yes, although I haven't tried.
You can skip ahead. 4:44 for the "crazy part" No need to manipulate you content is pretty good.
My Roland studio capture has an auto gain feature
How the D/A CONVERTERs compared to the id22 that i have ?
To my ears, similar. Not much in it. Of course, the JFET adds a little spice.
@@CreativeSauce thanks a lot for your answer :)
I love Audient. And what a bargain.... I personally don't need the EVO 16 but when my ID4 Mk2 gives up the ghost, I may well go for it.
The final question however, remains unanswered. How does it sound?? As an Apogee Ensemble user, (almost 6x the price of an EVO16) I've got my doubts...
So, I've tried the EVO16. Not bad for starters, but behind in sound quality, compared with my Apogee convertors. Even if they are 15 years old...
This is great, is evo a cheaper version of audient though or just the name. I've been looking at their id44 as I need least 4 but extra is handy for similar price. Just wondered if the dynamic range and quality would be as good. Really nice to see given over priced UA products and the like. Just need a unison competitor and we are laughing.
Id44 is the same price now 😁
curious if you can use the smart gain on any inputs connected through adat
At 6:39, he says it's only available from the front panel, so I'm assuming no
Direct monitoring in this?
Latency?
I had $699 in mind. Great value for money!
Yup. I mean, if anyone had $499 in mind, I'd be surprised!
Well, it is about time! An _affordable_ audio interface that can be expanded to 24 channels. I got so fed up trying to find such a unicorn that I just bit the bullet and bought a Presonus StudioLive 32R which is basically a 32x32 (64x64 expandable) rack mount mixer and _audio interface_.
I was not looking to buy a mixer. I really just wanted an audio interface that could do 24 or more channels, and the only units doing that with ADAT were insanely expensive - because such a config is always viewed as high end professional gear. Meaning, the cost of an 8x8 audio interface that allows for dual 8x8 ADAT expansions and the cost of those ADAT expansions (totaling 24+ channels) cost more than the Presonus 32R I bought! The reason is they come with all kinds of high end features. But I just wanted to hook up a crap load of synths and other gear without all the premium price.
Those 24+ channel ADAT setups and a Presonus 32R are all considered to be high end professional gear, so I still had to spend a mint (and the price went up recently due to supply chain and inflation). But the 32R isn't just an audio interface. It is a rack mount mixer capable of 64x64 channels, expandable using AVB audio over ethernet (not ADAT). So I could put another 4, 16, 24, or 32 channel mixer in another room and connect them together over an Ethernet cord, or I do that with several AVB compatible devices. Much more convenient than ADAT because ADAT is 1 to 1, point to point, but AVB is just Gigabit Ethernet.
Anyway, my point is, a $500 dual ADAT expandable audio interface is fantastic. Thank you Audient! If this had been available sooner, I probably would have bought it. For those that want more, though, don't be afraid to consider the several different audio interface compatible mixer consoles or rack mount boxes which use AVB for expansion instead of ADAT. The cost per input is often cheaper using such a device than most similar configurations using ADAT - well, except that Audient has maybe changed that with the Evo 16.
Some great points! Thanks for this.
I was saving my cash for evo 8 but sadly all the shop in my area doesn't have any stock.
Now that this is released I botch the idea of buying evo 8 and gonna go for this
Go for it!
@@CreativeSauce will do sir
Hello Mike! Great video once again! I suppose this unit is running ASIO drivers, right? Can you tell a bit more about the standalone mode and if there is a way to remote control it? I kind of missed those points if you did adress them... thanks! (In other words... Please take my money, Audient) !!
😂
Any idea when it becomes globally available?
I hear July
I was thinking about € 500 💁♂️😁
Wonder how does it compare to Audient Id44 🤔
LOL... I watched this figuring there was something bad about this Unit that wasnt obvious, only to see that you had the same question I did... "Is that price right?!" Thinking about getting this to replace or add to my Apollo Twin.... a shame the Twin only takes ADAT in.
Oh shut up and take my money Audient. Mike, Thank you for the review and the pricing information. Pretty darn sweet. I assume I can stack two together?
The price is correct given the mediocre technical specifications. 10.5 dbu ADC and 12dbu DAC output?! I hope this is a mistake.
Brilliant! I’m digging their loss of plot.
:) Long live insanity!
can you do Video how to do a how to re_master
Good suggestion thanks.
Just got mine
Congrats!
Hi .... do you know model quality ... CHIP AD-DA converters build for this interface >???
because .. for this price ... meaby is to much .. !!!
Thanks !!
They have NOT lost their minds, because they have COMPASSION with the music artist, producers in music industry so that everybody can buy this to make MUSIC.
Of course the elephant in the room here is going to be how these converters actually sound. Especially when compared to something like the Focusrite. Usually you get what you pay for. Hey, I'd absolutely LOVE to be able to expand to 24 ins. But I can not sacrifice sound. Not even a small degree... But this could also serve to light the fire under the Focusrite folks to up their game a bit. Also wish it had a digital stereo coax (or optical) out so I could sum out to my mastering deck. Using the DAW's stereo sum is awful IMO.
Bought it and im not regreting it (evo8 very similar looked at the spec provided) preamp sound clean (sometime i felt that it is too clean) and the a/d sounds fine compair to my 6i6 and clarett and the noise floor is out of this world.
How to you think should we use it in tandem with ID44??
How does the Converters and pres compare to the Presonus 2626 I currently have?
alright, that was well done. expected a flaw, dropped a price bomb instead. I own an evo4 and love it, I already have another rack mounted interface for this type of recording but if I ever need to replace it I'll definitely consider the evo 16!
Can anyone tell me why the ID44 is the same price as this considering it's made by the same company and this has way more inputs? Does the ID44 just have better premaps and converters?
does it auto gain for the a-dat input too?
Good question. In a word, no. That's because with ADAT in general, we don't set gain on the master, is always on the slave device. I'm not sure if that's a limitation of ADAT, but certainly the way I've always seen it done.
@@CreativeSauce thanks
usa QUEL chip nel lato o PGA250X chip nella sezione dei preamplificatori? secondo te è meglio questo SP18 o la nuova interfaccia Presonus quantum HD8 in termini di qualità preamps?
How well does it work with Studio One?
They literally just changed the price today to $580 😢
isit capable to group 6 channel of output for 5.1 monitoring?
What is better in this than in the Clarett 8 pre, that is like 5+ year old, and many other interfaces?
The Clarett 8pre is around double the price.
@@CreativeSauce Almost, yes. ;)
Mick how are you doing.
Roland was the first one who has smart gain and its in your list .
Should have been 32bit float ! Input levels good and output levels cool to headset that's nice for custome monitoring !
Price is great for what it does, I've found Audient drivers flakey sometimes mind on their ID range. At least on my system.
Are you Windows? They have a guide on how to set up windows for audio on their help centre. Helped me with my iD14
I hope it’s more reliable than the id22 I had two both failed .
I would love this interface, I just wish some companies would make an interface where you could bypass the preamp inside it to use an external preamp...This is great but you cannot use your own preamp if you own one.I guess you can, but it will be colored by whatever the preamp sounds like in the EVO..It would be nice to have an interface that had this option without paying 3 or 4 grand, and in a few years later have to use it for a doorstop anyway because it is not supported or some dumb ass reason..This is why I don't like spending much on an interface...it is probably useless in 3 or 4 years..If you are a commercial studio , I get it..Otherwise, I don't...$$$$$$$$$$$
Audient does have that feature on their iD range I believe, like the 22 and 44
oh man, what a pain in the arse.. I'm in the same boat.. can't find interfaces with only line inputs, AD line converters are crazy expensive.. and even the far from ideal option to waste the mic/pre by bypassing it seem impossible to find.. presonus had an 8 channel mic preamp that would do that but is out of production by now and I coun't find a gear with same features.. what's their problem I wonder..
There is however the Cranborne Audio 500ADAT, which is a 500 series rack with 8 slots and ADAT conectivity which looks fantastic.. but that an expensive route too...the rack itself is already expensive, mind about populating it..
Does it work on windows?
What about latency?
Thats crazy
When this releases I might trade my 18i20 for this, the only thing this doesn't have is AoIP which for me isn't something I need, but would be nice to have as it seems AoIP is going to become the norm
What is AoIP? Have never heard of that.

OMG, this is almost what I have been looking for! Not quite what I need but, for $500 and the added feathers provided I could make it work.
The only problem is in the expandability. ADAT, come on. There must be a better way {and there is} Dante. If this were Dante compatible it might very well be the best interface on the market.
Rack ears are no longer free, per Audient's support site :( Support didn't budge when I referenced all the promo videos saying they're free.
$20 on Sweetwater.
Um...I do not believe that it was a good idea to ask if Audient have lost their minds. If we start saying that this excellent product is under priced, Audient may hike up the price.
