I have this co-worker here in japan who only eats 3pc of bread per day, that bread cost is like 108 yen per pack.
when my other co-worker asked him why he always eats only bread at that time he answered:
"because I want to roll gacha in my game"
my co-workers that time was shocked because he added that even in his home he only eat bread and nothing more just
    to roll gacha.

It's almost impossible not to like Senchou, hearing these kinds of starkly honest admissions. And to be clear, this is way beyond gacha. There's simply a certain personality type -- and a fairly common one at that -- that is intrinsically addictive, that simply cannot self-regulate. And it's not about how much you spend, it's about indulging regardless of bad financial circumstances.
For myself, I never got into gatcha, but I've needed to break a couple of video game CDs to get my priorities straight again. It's a feeling that's hard to convey to those who have never been addicted to something.

@quicknfearless It's no different than buying drugs at a certain point - for that rush of feel good chemicals in the brain. Actually, it's not really any different than paying to go see a movie, a play, an orchestra, or a sports team. You pay for the experience and all you take home with you are the memories.

@quicknfearless On the other hand, you'd have to be such a beta to not have disposable income. People like to spend on things they fancy like their hobbies. And some hobbies are even more expensive than a gacha addiction. You could say people buying anime figurines are beta because all those figurines do is looking pretty on the shelf, which isn't too different from PNGs looking pretty in a gacha game. Whether people are getting value for what they pay is subjective. There's no need to shame anyone about how they spend their money. Some people would rather use that money on clubbing and booze or something, but others would say that's also a waste. As long as people are not being irresponsible and running their financial stability to the ground, they are free to spend their money however they want.

    • @WingSlaze
      @WingSlaze 2 роки тому +1

@@wilson2938 A significant chunk of profit of anime studios come from merchandising like figurines. Buying figurines are an excellent way to signal to the studio committee to produce more similar anime in the future. Doing gacha... funds more gacha games, 99.9% of which are plain garbage that utilizes every psychological trick in the book to rope vulnerable people, especially children, to spend beyond their means in their occasional moment of weakness, and keep them hooked. Thinking figurine collectors & gacha spenders are on the same level is pretty pepega, it's way closer to casino gambling or horse betting.

Well what Senchou's said is basically true, my parents also drilled me that no matter what on any circumstances borrow money from other people. If you really had to, borrow from your family, but never on any loan sharks (because it's dangerous) or friends (you can lose them). And the matter with spending is that probably you shouldn't regret it but take it as a memory and lesson.
And dang my reaction is the same as Shabby when I heard Senchou's spending on gacha----

This hits me real hard, because I was exactly the same way that she describes. I used to play a Disney Heroes a ton when it first came out because I liked the characters and it had a fun community. And just like she said, newer content comes out every month or so, and you figure "just a one-time thing, I'll drop $50 and see what happens, just like buying a normal game." And then it turns into a one-time $500 purchase, and then you do that once or twice a month, then once or twice a week, all to get the latest characters and max them out. Before you know it, you've got $200 in your account and need to make student loan payment, car payment, phone bill, gas for the car, things like that. I played the game for about a year like that, staying within the top 20 players. I know it was more than $10k because I stopped counting at that point. Looking back I'm pretty sure I came close to Marine's estimate.
I finally realized that each game update would have a new character, but the character I liked was nerfed and didn't seem as good suddenly. Then they came out with other matches that had additional grinding and currency involved, and I felt like the game started to turn into a chore if I didn't keep spending more and more money. I told the guild I was playing with that I wanted to quit, and while they were sad to see me go I uninstalled the game and never went back. Now if a game has gacha in it with real money I stay far far away. That Princess Connect game that EN was advertising a few months ago? Soon as I saw it was gacha I left. That anime girl horse racing game that Miko and others play? It looks fun, but no way. I have a lot more in savings now and could afford to make extra payments on my car, get new furniture, and even move out of my parent's house and into an apartment. Thank you for reading my blog, but I feel a lot lighter to finally admit it.

Despite gambling being illegal in Japan, lottery and gacha are massively prevalent and completely "normal" in their culture. As Marine talked about there are images of garbage sacks or rooms filled completely with hundreds of CDs just because each copy gives a single lottery entry to attend the concert, a huge waste both environmentally and financially

I'm just happy I don't have any friends who are gacha addicts because a community revolving around gambling will make you want to gamble. You see people spend 100 dollars and you tell yourself "What's 30 dollars compared to that? I can just stop buying soda and stuff. Also, I've played this game for so long 30 dollars is like the price of a normal game anyway." And then it snowballs.

    • @wilson2938

I did this for FGO where I've spent thousands on as well. Unfortunately it wasn't long before I got hooked on a different gacha game. I still play FGO as F2P, but spend money on another game, so... welp. I've spent like 10k usd on gacha so far this year. Trying very hard to lower my spending these days. Every time I try to tell myself "no", I end up just convincing myself to spend anyway because "What's the problem? I have the disposable income. i play these gacha games literally everyday. If I roll these characters right now, it would keep me happy for a long time." And that's exactly the kind of business model (long term daily commitment + microtransactions) and target demographic (working adults) that these companies go for. It feels like I'm being played like a fiddle, but at the same time I get what I want, so it's sort of mutual. Still in gacha hell today.

Gacha games are a hobby, and as with almost all hobbies you should really try to limit yourself. They are not really investment that will bear profit in the future nor they are supposed to. Maybe your hobby actually gives you money but most hobbies that are just money sinks in the end. Gacha game and accounts are especially unprofitable most of the time, even if you try to sell it. You can probably try to stream to get attention and money from other way.... but will you?
I don't really regret the memory made from playing gacha game or the money spent there as it is still happy memories.... but as with most things, try to control it.

Low and behold, 4 years later after uni, I got addicted to everything I listed above. Gacha luckily hasn’t been much of an issue for the year I’ve stuck by so far. I’ve managed to control how and what I spend on, and to take into account necessary expenses to ensure I don’t just dump $500 into gacha. It really is dangerous. I also spend monthly (?) on gacha but I’ve never gone over the $30 threshold or spend more than once a month. Only on holidays like Black Friday do I splurge (like around $140). Thank god for salaries. I don’t think I’d be playing a gacha game if I worked minimum wage. That would suck. After doing the math, yearly, I spend about 0.45% of my salary on gacha. And that’s when just skins. I don’t buy enhancements or stuff like that. I always thought I’d never become that person but here I am, spending almost $400 a year on AL. The rest of my salary though… I wonder where that goes off to…

I was addicted to spending on honkai impact 3rd i think i spent about $1,000 so i did the same thing and just stopped all together. I moved over to azur lane which is very user friendly and spending feels like something you do to say thanks to the developers. 1 year of honkai = $1000, 3 years of azur lane = 300 of money i don't miss.

And in the end, all that money spent on Honkai goes to West Taiwan. Genshin too. Don't feed the CCP beast.

Everyone has their weak spot. I spent a fair amount of money on TCG, TTG, PC Games and other stuff like that. My best friend spents a good amount of her money on cosmetics and clothing. In the end you just give your body a small serotonin boost, and do feel happy.

Remember, that was a savings account, so I think it was set up by her parents when she was younger. That said... spending that much money on gacha in a short period of time gets a "yikes" from me.

Gambling can become a serious problem, but in Japanese society, which is not so accustomed to socializing, it can be much worse. Socializing isn't always the solution, but it can keep your mind busy. If you only work, and you go home, and again to work, your monotonous life leads you to look for stimuli that break that, and if you don't have friends to meet, talk, and do things, it is much worse. In my country there is also gambling, but there are also many ways in which someone can be busy with more people, which can prevent you from doing those things, even if it is due to social shame.
