If I coukd go back or get "Caught Somewhere in Time.. this is definitely one of my top stops ! Slick. Hi Daffny!
@@happylena2915 wut....i mean there do exist solos like you said, but the one from The Sleep isn't "just" anything. Dime's solos in that, Floods, and Cemetary Gates are all dynamic and energetic and epic. That said, I also LOVE the solo in this song. The 2 bands are so different that it's dumb to compare them at all tbh
The whole middle, melodic section of the song, along with the three alternating solos, is one of THE finest pieces of music I have ever heard. Gives me chills all over! SO beautiful, so powerful. I can listen to Murray play for days and days without tiring of it.
Its one of Murray's finest solos along with Hallowed be thy name. Murray was well capable of doing these melodic solos but tended to get the faster ones due to his sheer speed. He was by far faster than Smith and even Harris himself admitted faster than himself on bass. He has suffered in the past decade but it happens to all fast guitarists as they get older including the great Knofler...it really pisses me off when people dismiss him as a second rate guitarist and think they can do this stuff quite easily. Murray was the reason I took up guitar in the first place and why I've always loved the strat.
Powerslave as a album showcases what is probably Iron Maiden's most blood and fast heart-thumping music and creativity of the band. I feel this album has the best chemistry between the members together. I actually have a love more for Somewhere in time and Seventh Son. In the 80s, if you loved hard rock or metal and weren't an Iron Maiden before Powerslave, you most likely became one with Powerslave and Live before Death. Which is a grossly underrated live album. The length of touring they had to support this album makes me astounded that they haven't had more music related ailments as a result. I wouldn't doubt if they all have carpal tunnel and arthritis. It definitely affected Bruce's singing range eventually.
amen to that. I'd cut off a leg to go back and be there. Unfortunately, the best song version was at hammersmith, "phantom of the opera". the best ever guitaring. watch?v=AI6OFf8QjZU
I first heard this when I was 11 years old. I'm 42 now. I think Murray's second solo is one of the finest moments in guitar music. Timing. Color. Emotion. Build. Feel. It's apposition and opposition to the rest of the music. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Those few seconds are for me the purest essence of Iron Maiden.
@Sebastian Slick i just dont understand how people dont get how good adrian is and how much of a better guitarist/songwriter he is than dave and even that hack janick. I like what murray plays on this song but adrians lead break is awesome and thank you for recognizing that
Fun fact, in ear monitors were invented by one of the techs working for Pink Floyd on The Wall tour to help the band hear each other over the large stages they would play as they were constantly standing in different areas. Only a couple of years before this concert.
Honestly, the riff of Powerslave alone is one of the most satisfying pieces of sound to ever grace my ears. It completely gives off the vibes of power and might
Agreed, he just has a wonderful style. He really is a master of improvisation. When Kirk Hammett plays an improvised solo, it just sounds messy. Dave, even through all these years, has kept up his musical chops really well and manages to pull off a very melodic solo at almost every moment.
the magic of Dave comes from the fact he and Steve were there since 1976 and even then played together like it had been for years. Truly a special connection that's never withered
This was almost 40 years ago. This is from Live After Death the first Maiden album I ever heard and I was hooked on metal and especially Maiden. This was when I was in the 6th grade and that was about 38 years ago this song and Maiden are timeless. Want to see them live again been too long.
Of all the bass players I've seen that pick with their fingers, no ones fingers are all over the place like Steve Harris. It's like watching a spider doing wind sprints.

Yes the guitar solo is great in this performance but you have to remember it was 1984 at the Long Beach Arena it was Adrian Smith and Dave Murray not the other guitarist he was not a part of Iron Maiden back in 1984 just saying

Dave Murray’s best solo. The single best guitar solo I’ve ever heard! (a few thousand times)
Try the version in trieste
Check the solo in 'The Sleep' by Pantera, you'll enjoy it
