- The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (originally The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere) is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797--98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. Modern editions use a later revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature.
Steve Harris is a genius period.
*God
I don´t think it is necessary putting a period after typing period, period. Period. Uhm... Period
@@espenkristoffersen4887 Seventh period of Seventh period
Fact
heck fucking yes.
How audacious was this band to even consider playing a song this complex and long live? Epic composition and incredible talent.
They were playing this very song 24 years later. That's confidence. That's genius
Not a complex song, dude
Pink Floyd
When your good .
Shawn Gillogly audacious indeed
This is the best recorded song in human history. This is the best live version I have found.
agreed
Probably the best performance Ive seen in my whole life
Amen
Yes it is!!!
One of the few bands where everyone is in True Harmony, Physically, Spiritually, and Musically. Best Maiden Concert! Long Live the Iron Maidens!!
Exactly
Dito
love it when Steve sings a long with the song .. he's really in the moment!
Because he writes like all of their songs lol. His lyrics
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 I know that , just because he writes them doesn’t mean he has to sing the lyrics . Crazy person
@@SnappingTurtle250 nobody said he has to numbskull, but if you were playing your own songs in front of thousands and thousands of people, you'd probably sing along too
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 well , look at the way answered and then come back ...
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 I’ve been listening to iron maiden since I was 13 years old , I known he writes most of the lyrics , that was not the point !!
Still today, I am amazed at how daring they were and how great they pulled it of. How many bands can boast being able to get a 14 years old teenager into English Poetry? My teachers never managed to even get me remotely interested but Maiden surely did.
This is the only video on UA-cam that I watch at least three times a week
So i do... this and Hallowed be thy name Hammersmith 1982
same
At that time, Priest and Maiden were absolutely unmatchable live. They were far far far better than anyone else around.
Maiden still is
@@luisemilianogonzalezvinces3400 Yes, but they have slowed down a bit live
Maiden and Helloween id say
@@eddiethehead4791I love Helloween 🎃 but when Kai left originally that fucked them up. After the Seven Keys 🗝️ otherwise who knows ? Wasn't quite the same when Kai then Michael left. But they've reformed in the past couple of years. Hopefully a new album in 2025 ?
I was at this show, till this day by far my favorite concert
you're so lucky! I wish I was there too.
really usaw them then?
easily one of the best live performances in the history of ever
totally insane in my opinion
Nikko always looks surprised by the sounds of his own drums
+bripro68 I'd say 'permanently excited'.
always tried not to look at him or his drums. the guitar player they replaced Adrian with used to be a side show act.
Lol so true
hahahahaha
We need more bands where the singer just talks about random shit for two minutes before a song.
i never thought i’d hear about Queen Victoria’s menstruation at a concert and especially at a heavy metal concert x)
Genesis
@@Darth555 Dave Grohl he never shuts the fuck up.
I said DAMN! Steve is a BEAST on this song!!
Steve Is god
+FastRedPonyCar Unbeatable
I'm trying to play the bass solo of this song but is very hard to play it with the same tecnique that Harris uses. The speed on his fingers is so insane!
What about Nicko?
The best iron maiden song...and that's not even a discussion, just raw facts
One of the best dual solos ever!
Bruce Dickinson: Cantante, compositor, músico, productor musical, esgrimista, empresario, escritor, historiador, locutor, presentador, guionista, catedrático universitario y piloto de aviación británico. Es decir, POLÍMATA.
UN GENIO.
🤯whaaaaaaaaaaaat ??!!!!
OK, I never expected to hear about the menstrual problems of the Queen of England at a heavy metal concert
+Martin Zaehringer It was pretty f*cking hilarious though.
+Martin Zaehringer
How much more metal can you get?
"THE QUEENS PERIOD!"
*Rocks Out*
*Guitar menstruating on the stage*
Hahahahah so true
I would love to chat with bruce man......it would be just him talking of course....
That's cool go for it enjoy live and music . Tim
Masterpiece of the masterpieces! God Save the Maiden
I bought this on VHS when it came out!!
so did i, iwas 14
Me too and i love it even more after 30 years!
Yes. Was 10 at the time. Still have 2 copies of the VHS.
Where is the Timemachine? 2 Hour Maiden, 4 Hour Pub 6 Gallions Kölsch 😋🍺. See them 8.7.21 or 22 or 23 in Cologne.
Yes , i was 15 years old when i see live after Death on VHS
Just one word: Masterpiece!
We all know Maiden is one of the greatest bands of all time, but in time to come, people will look back on their vast catalogue and wonder how on earth they managed to maintain such a remarkable and prolific output for so long. Feel so blessed to have been part of such an epic musical voyage.
Bruce dancing on Niko's drums might be the best thing ever
Its not just the musicianship, it's also the theatrics. The stage show is so impressive. The fog is awesome. The roadies did awesome and should be commended here.
this song is fucking timeless! Pure genius..
Just a brilliant piece of prog metal! AND unreal to think Bruce sings it even better 35 plus years later!! this poem was masterfully put to music still blows me away!
This is why I love Iron Maiden. They don't sing about drugs, war, politics, death, or religion like most other metal bands do. They sing about history and epic stories. Best band ever.
I would agree to that in the sense that they don't glamorize them but many of their songs do focus on war and politics. They are truly intelligent songwriters that tend to adhere to historical facts in their music. I love em too.
yup. "2 minutes 2 midnight" is all about war.......many of their songs are.
George Bennett
***** Mr. Potatohead, they sing about all of those things. They just have a more intelligent way of doing it. Have you ever listened to them???
Steve Harris is a literate man and knew where he wanted to take metal. I love him singing the lyrics sans mic. He wrote them! He found the most kickass players to reach the goal. He did it.
For me this song have that vibe and the chills like when ur listening to Metallica's Orion...i just can't explain it...running through your head....
The 2 best metal songs in my opinion.
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY THIS INCREDIBLE BASS BY HARRIS WITHOUT THE INFLUENCE OF ALMIGHTY GOD. FROM INDIA
The best metal band of the 1980's...without question.🔥💀😈👍
They’ve never played this better.
i saw the show in Dallas 85 awesome show , mixing metal with history is the brilliance of Maiden.
The powerslave album I think only had 7 songs. All awesome.
Seventh Son also had 7 songs and a masterpiece outro which is arguably the greatest album in all of metal together with operation: mindcrime
God do I wish they had 4k cameras back then.....
The greatest live performance of all time. Thank you, Iron Maiden! I wish I was born in the 60s 😩
Hear the rime of the ancient mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerizes one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea
And the music plays on, as the bride passes by
Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale
Driven south to the land of the snow and ice
To a place where nobody's been
Through the snow fog flies on the albatross
Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings
And the ship sails on, back to the North
Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on
The mariner kills the bird of good omen
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime
Sailing on and on and north across the sea
Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm
The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung
And the curse goes on and on at sea
And the curse goes on and on for them and me
"Day after day, day after day
We stuck nor breath nor motion
As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and
All the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink."
There calls the mariner
There comes a ship over the line
But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide
See, onward she comes
Onward she nears out of the sun
See, she has no crew
She has no life, wait but here's two
Death and she life in death
They throw their dice for the crew
She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now
Then, crew one by one
They drop down dead, two hundred men
She, she, life in death
She lets him live, her chosen one
"One after one by the star dogged moon
Too quick for groan or sigh
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang
And cursed me with his eye
Four times fifty living men
(And I heard nor sigh nor groan)
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump
They dropped down one by one."
The curse it lives on in their eyes
The mariner he wished he'd die
Along with the sea creatures
But they lived on, so did he
And by the light of the moon
He prays for their beauty not doom
With heart he blesses them
God's creatures all of them too
Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the rain
Hear the groans of the long dead seamen
See them stir and they start to rise
Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes
And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on
Now the curse is finally lifted
And the mariner sights his home
Spirits go from the long dead bodies
Form their own light and the mariner's left alone
And then a boat came sailing towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit
Penance of life will fall onto him
And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea
And the hermit shrives the mariner of his sins
The mariner's bound to tell of his story
To tell this tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all things that God made
And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man
And the tale goes on and on and on
The secret of being an amazing Metal Vocalist, it's all about the left arm xD
80's forever!
I rem walking coast of scarborough with headphones on. When it came too.and by the light of the 🌙 moon..there it was..cool moment...out at sea..beautiful ❤
Oh man this band ruled the world. One era .long time ago. I was 17 at the time in 85.so fucking cool band....
As a 12 year old brat, my first ever rock show... and a guy jumped from the roof to his death during it. Mesmerizing experience otherwise, still among the best concerts I've seen!
iron Maiden at his best....Bruce voice, speechless!! cheers guys! I was the Sports Arena of San Diego in 1988 I they were one of a kind..up today, they are the best heavy metal band in the world....PEACE! from Tijuana Mexico....
o Iron Maiden Desta Época Estava No Auge Ainda + Com Uma Das Melhores De Suas Musicas E Steve Harris,Brucce Dinkinson,Adriam Smith E Dave Murrey Nicko Macbraim Serão Eternos
saw this tour december 13,1984 13th row center! i was 13 years old, thanks dad!!!
At a Maiden gig I always take a piss break during this song between 7:09 and 9:46. Bloody life saver!
Again--Steve Harris ROCKS!!!
I had this in video as a teenager in 1989. Awesome live show.
I love Steve's intensity, both playing and singing the lyrics he wrote.
This one and hallowed are my all time favourites❤ Up the Irons!!!
Legend, epic, this is one of the best perforrmance in history of making music!
11:10 and beyong fucking eargasm simply amazing, and Adrian's solo is fucking perfection unreal can't stop rewinding to that part.
Dave's solo ain't half bad either ;-)
This band has been with me thru thick and thin since the age of 13 now past my half century seen them so many times and can say they never let me down. Up the irons
This song is one of my all time favourites.they never played it much live at all when touring.
Its a metal ballad.wish it would never end i play it on repeat often
This is just brilliant! What a great song and indeed a brilliant gig.
I always feel that neither Adrian Smith or Dave Murray get the respect or attention that they deserve.
Both of them are just fantastic guitarists, and Adrian Smith's vibrato is one of the most unique that I've ever heard. Just bang on. I always know it's him when I hear him play. I just love the man.
I always preferred Maiden as a two guitar outfit, and that's no disrespect to Janick Gers. Three guitars is prone to be messy.
The Powerslave album and Back In The Village, was my first exposure to heavy rock of this kind, when a mate of mind played it for me on a walkman. It was an epiphany for me musically. I couldn't believe that such an incredible sound existed. I will listen to it with equal passion until my dying day. Bless you Iron Maiden.
For sure. When I think about it, it's very strange how an album from 40 (or so) years ago can carry so deep meaning for the fans. Powerslave is more than an album, it's like an era that is forever spellbinding with its themes and sounds. I believe this album is timeless. It will always be special. That's why it feels strange that this was conceived, written and released in a shorter time than the Covid virus has been around. Such a brief piece of history that will always be remembered. And to think Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast was created in such a short time before this, it really makes you think the early 80's was a very special point in time. I wish I was there.
Legendary Masterpiece
My favorite bass player.
Woooow, oh my God this is so epic! I love you so much Iron Maiden!
Will listen this till the day that I leave this life!
And NOT in the rock and roll hall of fame -.- such a shame Iron Maiden is AMAZING!!!!!
I first saw a snippet of this particular song and performance on a rock documentary, and that was enough for me to seek out this whole video - amazing how Maiden can make a 13 minute masterpiece from an old poem!
I used to listen to this album when i was in Zacatecas. Mexico. Back in 1990 it was my dream to see them live
PQP.... Fodástico
Live after Death may just be the LP I listened to most often in my life. So awesome! For years I didn’t even know the studio versions of many songs until much later 😄
You don't get more epic than this.
Sweet childhood memories..
Thanx for the upload!
Steve Harris's band and he's a monster Bass player. Iron Maiden wouldn't exist if Harris hadn't have formed them. What a way to tell a tale. Imagine the Rime of the Ancient Mariner being made into a high budget horror movie, but done properly. Scary as hell.
What an absolut stunning performance, we need this kind of music back!
I was 11 when Live after Death came out. And when I'm 6ft under that gatefold vinyl is coming with me ⚰️ Has always been my favourite live album. Grew up listening to shit loads of live albums over the years. Nothing has topped this since. Up The Irons🤘
Lokk at this kids, this is how we used to make live concerts with awesome bands ! and i had the chance to grow with this !! Up the irons !
you lucky bastard
I majored in English at UNC because of this song and wrote several papers on Coleridge.
Awesomeness, epicness, madnesssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love Bruce!!!!! Up the Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the way up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got this the day it came out. Befriended the guy that ran the counter at our local grocery store ( Pathmark Freehold NJ) and he put aside a copy for me, of all the new metal albums. This one hit hard. What an amazing band. My Top 5 bands.
Everytime i hear the passage from 9:48 till the end i get goosebumps and tears to my eyes.
Masterpiece of Music History.
I'll never ever forget seeing them on this tour. I was 14 and it's etched in my mind forever. Up the Irons \m/
The best Iron Maiden song ever.
Hard to pick the best but....".Still life" ............
jonny54169 still life is easily one of the worst
The best song from Iron Maiden!
Amazing live performance and the very best version of this song.
The best song ever
Maiden at their best!
When I die, I want to come back as Bruce Dickinson just as he is in this show. GREAT era, they were on fire. I got to see them several times in the 80's. Tickets were around $20 in those days. Although this may be my favorite Maiden song, and one of my top 5 favorites, I want to be buried with Piece Of Mind.......
Who dislike this masterpiece???
Esta canción es una Obra Maestra. De principio a fin..Steve Harris. ..eres un Dios. ..
No matter how long the song is it's so well composed by Iron Maiden you know the finale is as good as the start like a good car or motorcycle race
Great song, amazing musicians
At 12:42 the Adrian's look at Dave says "How f**** good we are"
Best metal song of all time
Thank you my english teacher for showing my class this
Awesome. LOVE IT.
LOVE this song.... Always have been one of my favorite bands.... Wish I could find some "Brothers" that would wanna do some stuff like this.... Awesome....
"If you don't become the Ocean, you will always be seasick"
