- Add taste and sophistication to your playing with this in-depth tone and theory lesson
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In October 2019, one of our favourite guitar player/pedal builders, Simon Jarrett from Kingsley Amplifiers, was in the UK and agreed to give me - Dan here - an in-depth guitar lesson covering everything from his dynamic tone to advanced jazz harmony.
Unfortunately (yet unsurprisingly), I managed to lose the media within a day of filming. Or so I thought. Fast forward to January 2021 and a spontaneous Covid-inspired clean-up… the precious media is found. Hoorah!
Please note: this lesson goes very deep with advanced harmonic concepts, specifically certain modes of the melodic minor scale. I've put timestamps in that connect to other resources in certain key sections that you might also want to check out.
I am delighted to share this masterclass featuring Simon Jarrett with you.

Notice the attention he is giving Dan; this was a legit personalized lesson intended for Dan. Thanks for sharing. What a genuine guy.
Simon's dynamics and feel for every note is absolutely ridiculous. Such clean playing.
Right then, I’ve just been and checked and my guitars definitely don’t have any of those notes...
I’m with you Nigel! Mick here.
Hahahaaaa
Nigel Cassidy BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I have a device that has deluded itself into believing it's a guitar.
I had to listen with headphones so my guitars will never know what they are missing 😏
Exactly
I'm walking across a musical desert and see Simon holding a glass of water. I reach for my guitar, then turn around to find he has vanished in the wind. I know what I saw, and so must keep walking...in search of flavor town.
My theory is definitely getting better..........I nearly understood some of this:-)
This might just be the best guitar lesson on UA-cam
That’s not an overstatement.
I understand that there may be some folks who only come to TPS for gear stuff and maybe they are the downvoters. If I cared I would feel sad for what they are missing. TPS, name notwithstanding is not a gear show it’s a show for creatives by creatives This particular episode was nearly gear free and while I am a gear dork, I did not miss gear talk one bit. My music theory is rather randomly acquired so by the end more was sailing over my head than into it but this is going to be a watch multiple times episode. I learned more than I expected and really found Simon to be modest and a great teacher in addition to a great player. I think Dan is also a solid teacher and as this video is over a year old would still like to see a Dan Jazz episode. Thanks my friends, so great. Ross
@@Ndlanding thanks for taking the time to post your reply. Oft times I make a comment and they just vanish into the aether. I look forward to more episodes like this. While I miss the Mick and Dan together stuff, what they've been doing in the latest round of lockdowns has been stellar!
Simon Jarret, Chris Buck, Mick Taylor, Ed O'brien, Jonny Kinkead, Daniel Steinhardt, Dave Gregory, Dishan Abrahams & many more.
Incredibly talented, hard working and very humble. Just the combination that this world needs. Thank you.
“We’re going to flavour town” might be my most favourite TPS quote of all time. Thanks guys!
haha they've been watching a bit of Guy Fieri
As of this writing I can confirm 1.3k guitarists now accenting upstrokes.
Hahahahah
I just poured myself a HUGE WHISKEY and BURNED my GEAR!! BRAVO That was RIDICULOUS and AMAZING!!
Simon is amazing. A genius. His theory is ridiculous, and his playing is virtuosic! Thank you, guys.
Every time Simon Jarrett is on the show, I learn enough to fill a lifetime of study. Thank you for finding and sharing this, Dan!
This one goes into That Peddle Show Greatest Hits.
The worst thing about this is that I first met Simon when he was about 20 at a music school we both went to and he was already a brilliant player then. A truly great player imho.
30min in and my brain is full. Will revisit and again and again. So many concepts and pathways for expression. Thankyou
30 seconds in and my brain is full.
All man Brothers!,
I love how Dan brings joy to everything guitar. It’s infectious. 😊
Rare, I think, to find a gear manufacturer who at the same time is clearly a very fine musician and an engaging tutor. Excellent episode: thank you Dan.
Man, Simon’s touch just has this really special kind of “sweetness” to it, just beautiful! I remember thinking the same thing when he was previously on the show a while back - he’s surprisingly humble about it too.
It is reasuring that I haven't been playing the wrong notes, just using an altered scale :-)
Simon is absolutely incredible as a player and a pedal builder, Kingsley Jester 👍🏼
I really, really love Simon's playing. It is very special to have a sound like that and a touch on the guitar in that way. It's fairly rare. Players like the great Robben Ford come to mind. Simon has that. It's very satisfying to listen to. I absolutely love his pedals too. Awesome episode.
16:28 ... I had this Dan's expression 100 times watching the video .... a combination of being dazzled and the frustration to know I will never play like that...
An hour of beautiful tones, warm jazzy playing, and pleasant conversation?
No better way to start the morning.
Thanks TPS!
Edit: That deep breath from Dan at 56:48 says everything you need to know about Simon's playing... Incredible stuff!
I like to hold my guitar when watching these episodes. Not play along, just hold. I found myself wanting to hold a cuppa during this one. Such a great hour of beautiful, informative guitar playing. Thanks! (For the record, 90% of the technical talking went over my head, and I didn’t care one bit. I got the feels of what they were saying, just not the technical musicality of it.)
or listening before sleep: guitar dreams...😏
Can’t believe it’s been over a year since we first saw that Matchless - such a time warp for the last 12 months.
Thank you so much for this video. For 30 years I’ve always been told I didn’t hit the guitar hard enough... always had a very light touch and made it up with pedals and amps. I don’t play nearly as well as Simon, but my approach is very similar... I will be paying more attention to Kingsley pedals now that I know more about the designer!
How in the hell does one person have enough time to become a killer jazz guitarist AND a genius amp/pedal designer? Love the video. Masterclass indeed!
I want a Simon album! Killer chops!
Simon is so absolutely brilliant as a player. I've got a Jester here waiting to go on my new board build too. Real treat to have this material up on here! Thanks Dan and Mick!
Loved this, pure musical conversation...
Two top blokes chatting, playing, sharing....... living !
Simon’s knowledge is immense ! I still feel home with the pentatonics scales 😅🤣
The sheer joy of Dan in this is wonderful ... great lesson Simon, thank you
This episode is ridiculously good; Simon is an absolute boss.
I suspect this is Mick & Dan's way of keeping us busy and distracted for the rest of lockdown. I'm going to have to watch this every day forever to get these ideas into my head and fingers...
Me and you both David - Mick here. Literally no idea. Hahahaa!!
A lot of general grown up human stuff has been shoved out of my brain during this episode.
Thank goodness you found it.
I'll come back in future, however in the meantime, those swept arps in the outro jam. Blimey. Charlie. With bells on. Wonderous. Thank you.
Simon is a genuine genius and I absolutely love looking at the expressions on Dan's face after some of Simons playing :-)
Simon is in the top 1%.. best pedal maker, best tone, best playing.
Dan, you’re jazz chops have really improved! Now I know why. 😎
Between Simon and what Josh Smith has been teaching I can see a path to where I want to get. I like Simon's approach to looking at it from multiple angles and all those little tips. It's very freeing. Simon, you Sir are a stellar player and pedal and amp creator. Thanks for finding that lesson Dan!
As one who came to guitar from piano and keyboard for years, this all made sense to me. BUT to see someone do this with such facility on a guitar was mind blowing! Thank you for this, TPS.
Dan, you are amazingly fast at picking this stuff up! I didn’t get half of it, but I loved this video for the nice interaction between you two and the lovely playing. Please, can you do something like this with other players too? I would love to know more about Ariel Posen’s approach to playing, for example.
Another great example of the huge range of a Les Paul. I grew up thinking of Les Pauls solely in the realm of Slash and high gain rock/metal. Discovery via UA-cam over that last several years has shown me so many great examples of what else it can do. Finally becoming a fan of the LP.
What a legend.
This makes me want to buy more Kinglsey pedals, not just because the pedals are brilliant but because of him.
Right!?
The episodes with Simon will always be among my favourite videos, not just on this awesome channel, but on the entirity of UA-cam. His playing always does good things to me, and his enthusiasm for his craft is aboslutely absorbing. As a teacher myself it's really fantastic to watch someone articulate ideas in such an enthralling way. I'll definitely be watching this video a few more times... Oh, and that ending!!
Just to add that I'm now here watching the video for the 5th time :D It's so good!
That’s the way it’s done. I really enjoyed the casual conversational instruction. That’s was truly a master class. A few of those could really propel an experienced player to another level. Well done!! Thank you both very much. I really need a Kingsley Drive pedal in my life, such a sweet sound.
This is gold for a blues jazz guitarist 😎. Thank you!!
I feel like I've just found something to really study and learn from. It might take more years than I have left... It's *really* nice to observe learning though. Seeing Dan have his mind bent and stretched and warped a little is truly inspiring and fun!
Warm greetings to Simon from Los Angeles, I play his pedals and yes, they are the best I have ever owned!
Oh man, the skills of the guy are unreal!... when you called out 'and to the 4' in the final flavour town vamp it was instant adaptation and beautifully seamless, my brain would still be processing what you'd said a bar into that 4 chord 😄 Great episode 👏👏
Dropped directly into my "Lessons" folder! Thanks, guys!
So good to hear Simon mention he might return to amps one day. I’ve been hoping for one of those puppies for years and years now. His pedals (and customer service) are all world-beating
what Simon said about connecting one chord tone of a chord to the closest chord tone of the following chord is absolutely the best advice to all players! This is an essential concept in jazz playing which deserves a lot more attention in other types of music as well.
So glad this file turned up. This is absolute gold guys, thanks! Mind you I love all the videos with Simon Jarrett. He plays all the licks I want to play in my head but can’t in real life.
Simon is a phenomenal teacher! I've been playing for 14 years and I think this the first theory lesson that has ever actually clicked with me.
THANK YOU for posting and thank you simon for being such a great teacher. You guys rock. Ill be rewatching this one a few times for sure
On my 5th watch. Still picking up new points. Such a great lesson!
Superb, way above my head but love being involved Dan.. What a knowledgable chap...
Have to go back again ,mind blown memory full ,but learned enough to be going on with .You two made it look effortless. Thank you so much .
This has been one of the best vids I’ve seen on this subject. I know you guys don’t do too many of these, but more or similar content would be great. Also, Dan’s exasperations after all of Simon’s examples were exactly how I felt watching too 😂. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Have been watching TPS for a year or two but compelled to comment for the first time...what a brilliant relaxed and practical dive into theory with 2 brilliant personalities! Well done. Also, I want all the valve pedals!
Fantastic...just a delightful and educational insight into a masterful mind and player. It's all incredible but 56:34 all the way out is just a mind-blowingly good run. Thank you both.
Great stuff. Really enjoyed this! On the theme of music theory, it would be great to see Rick Beato collaborate with TPS for a video also.
I do like Simon's playing. I like the way you can see him thinking about what to do next. And I mean that in a good way. So thoughtful and tasteful
Such lovely chops. More “jazzy” folks please gents! Great show as ever.
This is absolute gold! Incredible playing and teaching from Simon!
Brilliant lesson! I wish some of these things had been explained to me like that 30 year ago. Who knew theory could be so musical!
What a great guitarist he is. How have 4 people down voted this? Weirdos.
I'm 14 hours after you and it's 10 people and I never understand who comes here to downvote things.
"Some people get their kicks stomping on a dream"...
It's incredible. Simon's playing is simply stunning, and he seems such an all round good human and is certainly a superb teacher. What's not to like?!
Haters gonna hate. Stupid, but it’s the world in which we live.
This is great, thank you. After Simon’s first tip, I paused and practiced for days. While doing the dishes, exclamated: « So maybe thát could be why the minor pentatonic is so great for blues?! » yeah, inspiring, guys!
Thanks for sharing the lesson
Man, what a great lesson. Super appreciative for posting!
I was lucky enough to have Simon for my guitar teacher growing up in Maple Ridge, BC. Hes an amazing person, showed me EVERYTHING about guitar he possibly could, went way beyond a guitar teacher, lent me a 60's Hiwatt 50w combo for a highschool concert even. I didn't realize how lucky i was at the time. Thank you Simon!!
Awesome Dan ! Great FREE lesson ! thank you mate . Very generous of you and Simon.
This is brilliant thank God you found it and for posting this beautiful lesson!!!
Wow this is amazing material. Thank you
Thanks for that video Dan!
Kettle on, seated comfortably, and I am READY
Will check out this weekend! thank you Dan!
This is a pure gold mine. Thank you for this. :)
So glad you found this. Really useful stuff well put and tastefully delivered. He has such an amazing touch.
Pure Gold. A years (or a lifetime) worth of work in 57 minutes.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you 🙏

Very interesting episode! Would love to see more of this stuff.
I love this energy you guys have, love watching your enthusiasm Dan and Simon..
I'll be revisiting this a lot through lockdown. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for keeping things rolling through these crazy times!!! Happy day!!
Dan (and Simon) - this is so good !! Thanks for (finding and) sharing. Will have to watch this multiple times to try and absorb it bit by bit
Thank you Dan for finding and sharing this wonderful video.
Mind blowing. Will come back to this video a lot in the future, I know it. So much to take in.
I'm going to just bookmark this so I can watch it over and over until it all makes sense.
Simon... Dan... So enjoyable. Simon gives a legitimately good lesson, Dan balances out being a good host, yet being a great student as well. Great playing, great advice and thoughts. I've now watched/played with the episode at least 3 times, and just have gotten a lot of enjoyment from this episode! Plus, so many quotes within this episode...
OK, that was so good! I have learned a lot of new stuff, beautifully explained and played. Thanks so much.
