    The irony in this example is that huck is the more empathetic of the 2 boys and is capable of the most growth in realizing the way things are is wrong... All while using that word a thousand times more.

      Except book banning isn't a "new" thing in America. To Kill a Mockingbird, Huck Finn, Catcher in the Rye, and a myriad of others have been on banned lists for the past 70 years.
      What's odd is that in cases like To Kill a Mockingbird, the reasons have shifted. It was originally banned because it had the n word and centered around a r*pe case. NOW it's banned because Atticus is a "white savior" and he says racist things in 'Go Set a Watchman' (the 'sequel' to TKAM)

      @@shadypelican - Banning books (and especially BURNING books) was a 'thing' that faded from America about a half century ago. Policing speech and thoughts is a truly scary thing that many thought was gone forever. Sadly, it's back... and many folks don't seem to realize the kind of horrific totalitarian government they are pushing.

  • @Zelig2Cents
    @Zelig2Cents 2 роки тому +6

    It's been a long time since I read any Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, but I remember frequent reference to one gentleman in the community that Huck always referred to as N- Jim. However, I never once had the sense that the author himself - Mark Twain - was in support of that mindset. It was more like he was recording the way a lot of people thought. If that's how young white boys thought at that time, because of their education (or lack thereof), should Mark Twain have glossed over that fact or told it like it was? I think the latter is the honest path. Also, there are PLENTY of other vices beyond racism. Just because a person isn't a racist doesn't mean they're automatically promoted to sainthood. I've met people who aren't racist, but they still treated their elderly parents as if they lower than dogs and in imposition and why wouldn't they just die... and it breaks my heart. Until a person has the humility to realize that they TOO would be capable of any of those sins, racism, being a thief, being selfish, if they had been raised that way, they will make the mistake of arrogance and think, "Well I certainly would never be capable of that!" Yes you would. There but for the grace of God go I. I'm thankful my parents raised me to believe in God, the awareness that there IS right and wrong, that the greatest of these is love, etc. But I'm not foolish enough to think that I'm perfect or that I'm better than someone else. Just that by God's grace I received the love that I need, so I can pass it on to others. I feel BLESSED every time I'm able to share God's love. BTW, as far as Louis pushing the envelope, I'm for it. I think the biggest motivator is force us to think about it and react. It's an absolute waste for someone to come into this gift we call life and just coast on auto pilot and never engage in it. It's way to easy to go about life in a lazy way and when Louis or other great comics poke us a little bit; a big part of that is to prod us to not just respond like robots to predictable jokes. There are some so-called comedians who do "edgy" or controversial jokes, but they're not doing it for the value of the material. It's just a technique, a formula, that they know works. I have zero patience with them. Louis CK is not one of those hacks. Nor is Dave Chapelle, Bill Burr, Norm Macdonald, nor a long list of awesome comedians!

    • @dash.reacts
      @dash.reacts  2 роки тому +2

      I hear every word of this. I think context is a big part of everything, whether it’s Mark Twain writing, Dave Chappelle making a joke, Joe Rogan doing a podcast, or Louis CK making a joke. Somewhere along the way, people have started losing sight of that. Left, right or center…nobody’s perfect (just like you mentioned). I think comedians do a great job of shining a light on that in a funny way. But the sad thing is…comedians are staring to have to walk on eggshells just to tell jokes.

I was attempting to point out that given the history of how black people have been treated in this country, and how much the N-word has been a part of it, that these 2 epithets are not in the same league. I don’t think that it does. There’s a difference between bleeping the word in a Louis CK stand-up set on YT (in the off chance that there’s an algorithm cost to leaving it in) and omitting it from Mark Twain’s prose as historical reference.
      But I will check out the Opie and Anthony discussion. I appreciate the recommendation.

      As a counterpoint, UA-cam would more than likely demonetize a video that contains the word.
      Their audio recognition is very thorough, and for the sake of making money, bleeping it is a smart choice.
