Biber is one of the best composers of all times, but also probably one of the most overlooked. If this poignant Passacaglia isn't a Masterwork, I don't know what can count as such.
This is a beautiful violin solo! The way Gabrielle plays allows the instrument to convey not only her utter commitment but her tender feelings too. I have watched and listened to it now many times and at the very end her slightly self-conscious smile portrays her gentle humility in a truly wonderful way. I hope perhaps to see her play more solo pieces but in the meantime I want to thank her and wish her every happiness and fulfilment in her work.
Gabrielle’s heartfelt and virtuosic rendition brings forth the Guardian Angel to bless all those who hear the music. With each variation that sprouts from the grand and captivating bass line, she takes us deeper into the chambers of our inner silence and our bonding with the divine.
This is my favorite and the violinist is amazing! So impressive! Her skills and creativity is God given, ofcourse with hard work as well. Goes right into the soul and gives a cleansing of the soul. Thank you so much, i have listened to this so many times and i don’t think i will ever stop coming back. Keep it up Gabrielle, never put down your violin!
There's something remarkably stirring and evocative about Biber's Passacaglia. Such a simple initial bass line that blossoms into a series of incredibly clever variations; it just captures you and pulls you in for its entirety. I'd put it up there as one of the greatest pieces ever written for unaccompanied violin...next to Bach's Chaconne of course! Perhaps there'll be a Voices of Music recording of that magnificent work from one of their incredible violinists one day? ; ) Wonderful recording and performance. Thank you for yet another gem! - A young early music fanatic
I challenge the Bach Chaconne Orthodoxy! Biber's Passacaglia is unbeatable in terms of both complexity and emotional expressions in a way that Bach's very particular demands don't allow; a gorgeous masterpiece, I'd argue Bach's Chaconne is too focused on technical aspects rather than allowing those playing it room to breathe and make it their own in comparison to the similarly brilliant, innovative Passacaglia which can express so much more feeling depending on who is playing, their mood, the passion they put into it. I don't know, there is something... truly special in terms of shear gorgeousness of Biber's Passacaglia. Je ne sais quoi. There is something deeper to Biber's masterpiece, something to be unfolded so differently by each who approaches rather than 'as a test' as it can feel Bach's Chaconne can be where each player tries to simply demonstrate the greatest mastery - not using the piece as something through which they can express themselves without feeling the pressure of a technically focused test...
@@cbpolitico I completely disagree with you. I play Chaconne and yes it is difficult but it has saved my life. I completely melt into the dept and complexity of the piece. It talks and speaks life and pain and beauty. I feel my emotions come up to the surface and take me places no piece has ever been able to do. Biber's Passacaglia is absolutely magnificent and definitely lighter but it will never compare to Chaconne. ❤️
I've listened to quite several interpretations of this sonata, and I do appreciate really a lot Gabrielle Wunsch's one: the sound is perfect in long notes (listen to the transition at 5:20 !), pure without any vibrato at all (I don't like it for baroque), it sounds just marvelous; progression is natural, easy, the sentiment expressed is exactly how I like it: it's wonderful, thank you !
I heard this specific piece where I live and I know that it requires a lot of creativity and strength to bring to life the same four notes that you hear from the beginning to the end of the music. Every variation has to be unique, without leaving apart the main theme. Wonderful interpretation by Gabrielle Wunsch and thank you for sharing it!
Gabrielle takes a relatively common cannon and infuses her most pure qualities into a solo performance and thus reveals her fine pedigree as a player. If only others could take the torch - meanwhile, she does do so very well" now. WOW.
With four simple notes emerges a universe of possibilities. profound and simple at the same time. Higher consciousness resides in the realm of mystery. this piece transports the listener there. The discordant sounds unify. The variations one can almost anticipate
I initially listened to Silvia Silverstein interpretation. But great music is player agnostic. I can listen to it over and over again on violin on guitar or in my mind. It is my 'Guardian Angel'
the sound of the baroque violin is very touchful, and intimist at the same time,, this music makes me want to learn the baroque violin, (i play the modern violin)
There is something more in Biber's music, especially this Passacaglia. There seems to be a recent prominence in his work...or is it just my imagination? I wish someone would write more about his life and his passions. What does he wish us to feel? What is the passion that he inspires?
You said it @Sforzando26....There's something remarkably stirring and evocative about Biber's Passacaglia.....to which i would add Calming. its stirring and calm at the same time, at least as GW plays it at this tempo..like Kempff's bach on piano...it soothes me as it makes me waht to cry, or just breathe deeply. Bravo!
What beautiful playing, and perfect Baroque style playing; she makes it look so easy. I'd say my eyes are green with envy, except they're already green.
My first meeting with Passacaglia, unique. And Gaberielle Wunsch´s performance was breathtaking. I didn´t know that baroque violins even existed. Than you!
Not to compare, but up till now my fav baroque violinist was Racel Podger. But i like this woman's playing even more...It seems warmer, more meditative, i live the phrasing more, more expressive. ...i m imagining all this?
not comparing out of malice, but this is much more expressive and meditative than the version i have heard by rachel podger, who i like alot..esp for mozart.
Spectacular! Easily my new most favorite piece of music! I watch each day, and it brightens my day. And this all on a Baroque violin….. ! One favor to ask, what can you tell me about the artwork on the inside harpsichord lid behind Gabriel? That too is beautiful!
The lid was painted by Millicent Tomkins, based on 17th century originals. Sadly, Millicent passed away recently. You can see an interview with her here, where she talks about her art: ua-cam.com/video/J8A5R8zaLKg/v-deo.html
These are baroque bows, not modern violin bows (and baroque violins). So the technique is different. You can see a video about the different types of violin bows here: ua-cam.com/video/tW7TcX8Lx_s/v-deo.html You can also see a video we made about the baroque violin: ua-cam.com/video/nsfYMSI3cuA/v-deo.html
I would love to hear more from Gabrielle. She's often in the background, but what a talented violinist!
Fabulous player!
Far too much in the background

I abosolutely agree with you. Biber is a hidden treasure.
All that in her head and even more in her heart. Astonishing. Just astonishing.

INCREDIBLE how she makes that violin sing
I adore the way she plays, so honest and pure. She makes pure poetry
I love Listening To Gabrielle And Watching Her Play This Work,Now I must Learn More About The composer Franz von Biber What A Delight Thank You!
When I heard Biber's Rosary Sonata 6, I was hooked! Awesome performance!
Потрясающе звучит! Благодарю за эту запись и возможность услышать так много хорошей музыки!
Наше удовольствие.

Brilliant Gabrielle Wunsch! Brilliant Biber!

Amazingly gifted musicians and the acoustics and beauty of the church they perform in just make for the best concert experience! Thank you!
Utterly beautiful

Profoundly beautiful and passionate. Wonderful performance. Brava! 🌟✝️

achingly beautiful performance
Stunningly beautiful.
To give an infinite and sweet kiss to your beloved under this timeless harmony...
Bellamente interpretada esta gran obra de Biber, gracias Gabrielle y Voices of Music
Such nuance and restraint. I close my eyes and listen to this and all is right. It takes me on a beautiful journey. Music for psychonauts.
Excellent performance ! Congratulations !
Gabrielle sei bravissima, raffinata e bellissima !! = Gabrielle you are very clever, fine and beautiful
Lovely, peaceful, speechless...
A thrilling performance!
Wow! I feared the violin would ruin it all... I was wrong! Stunning performance

You should check out Elicia Silverstein's version too.
One of my favorites. Works well on lute too!
não me canso de ver !!!
So great!
Thank you for the upload!
Wow. Honestly.
Awesome! Hats of to Gabrielle Wunsch!
Hope one day you'll make a video of Vitali's Chaconne in G minor. :)
+Luca Simoncini Thanks so much, Luca~the Vitali looks like fun, next up is the Biber E Minor sonata :)
+Voices of Music
Am adding my vote for Vitali's Chaconne!
Isn't the Vitali Chconne a fake baroque piece? Written later and falsely attributed to Vitali?
Phenomenal !!
Beautiful violinist, beautiful piece, beautiful setting
Outstanding ♫♪♥

I don't think so... I prefer this performance to Podger's but her's is really good too
Sublime! 💞

Oh, thank you, I’m sorry to hear of Millicent’s passing. Is a beautiful painting!
The world is a better place because of Millicent, Tanya, and Gabriel’s contributions to out communal humanity. Thank you.
Touching pieces, and I just practice it a lot, but still don't get the quality >_>||
👍👍
Excellent. !!!!!
Many thanks!
Genios.
If music were food, this would be a handsome, delicious banquet.
