Q. Where can we hear you play in concert?
A. We perform in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a concert schedule, visit our website or join our mailing list www.voicesofmu...
Q. Where can I buy CDs?
A. Our CDs are available on iTunes, Google, Amazon, CD Baby and just about everywhere; you can also buy a CD in a jewel case from Kunaki: www.voicesofmu...
Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance?
A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound.
Q. Why are there no conductors?
A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :)
Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they different from modern instruments?
A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning. Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones-which we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to more modern music.
Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher?
A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See goo.gl/pVBNAC
In 1681, Biber engraved and published in Salzburg a set of violin sonatas that extended the compositional limits of the violin. The sonata No. 5 in E Minor (C. 142) uses a combination of variation technique and double and triple stops alternating with free passagework to create complex textures and affects. A brilliant work from the one of the finest composers writing at the end of the 17th century.
For this performance, a new edition was prepared using the original 1681 manuscript. Voices of Music is creating a worldwide digital library of music videos, recordings and editions, free for anyone in the world. I am Listening To This For The First Time,Ms Blumenstock And Voices Of Music Deserve Special Praise I Love This,Thank You!
Thanks for listening
I don't normally comment on UA-cam but this performance definitely warrants the highest praise. This Biber piece has such an intensely dramatic, chill-inducing opening and Elizabeth Blumenstock absolutely kills it with a truly awesome and electrifying entrance and performance, with each variation of the theme artfully and masterfully executed. The entire Voices of Music ensemble is, as always, spot on in interpretation and perfectly in sync with the soloist's artistic use of rubato throughout the performance. You all are truly one of the best ensembles I've had the pleasure of hearing!
Biber never seems to hit a duff note. Everything he did is moving and dramatic...even Bach had his off days with some pieces but Biber never seems to...
Londonfogey I like how you describe Biber. "Never hit a duff note." Hmmm I like that. I have different ways I think of my ten or twelve favorite baroque composers (I'll spare u the list!!) but damn you're right about Biber: he's just ON (always), isnt he? Quite unique in that.
super underrated!
(this performance is very great btw. I really like blumenstock =)
@@Londonfogey Agreed about Biber. His works bring me incredible pleasure.
How have I missed Biber all these years? There is an air of excitement in his music. What a master!
Biber is a hidden gem. I only came upon his music because my father brought John Holloway's recording of his Mystery Sonatas.
These are the highest level exponents of baroque music.
Biber was a genius, all his compositions are masterpieces.
My favourite is the celebrated Passagalia from his rosary sonatas.
What a thrilling, beautiful sonata this is, wonderfully played by Ms. Blumenstock and company. More Biber, please!
as an elderly man of fifty three, i am late to the internet and find jewels like this. I am a hillbilly but love classical, and especially baroque music. I love this version of sonata number five. I have to tell you this voices of music is awesome and i am going to donate, it sounds incredible.
Exellent performance.
Elizabeth Blumenstock absolutely incredible. Delight and Joy.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for listening
Just wonderful......thank you
This is one of the very best performances of this piece I've heard, equal to the one I'd previously thought the best. Elizabeth Blumenstock was absolutely incredible, as was Voices of Music. Thank you for providing such wonderful performances!
It is one thing to play a piece. It is another to bring it to life. Blumenstock and the "Voices of Music" bring Biber to life. You can feel the spirit of the time and the place. The Soul soars again.
If I was at this concert, I might spontaneously stand up and cheer at Ms. Blumenstock's playing.
Really good to hear David so clearly - terrific combination of instruments. Reassuring in the current turmoil here in UK to be reminded that there is still calm, logic and truth in the world.
This is stunning. Phantastic playing, guys! Elizabeth, you really freak me out. ;-)
She is fantastic!!
A delight to listen to this performance! The assemble of the instruments gives the melody such an enrichment of resonance, phrasing, lyrical with vibrant rhythm, intensity and gracefulness. The instruments give the background support of paragon delight to the violinist reinforcing the melody.
I recently stumbled on to a recording of Handel's Susannah featuring the extraordinary voice of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and discovered that the concertmaster in this recording playing an exquisite violin was Elizabeth Blumenstock. Two pleasures in one.
Yes we always remember Lorraine, we also did the Handel Arias album with Philharmonia, She was amazing.....
What an amazing performance by Elizabeth Blumenstock and the Voices of Music.
:)
ABSOLUTE PERFECTION IN EVERY DETAIL FROM EVERY PERSON!
Thank you, Viola Bear.
WOW!!, Frau Geigerin spielt stilvoll, saubere Klänge, saubereTöne, einfach großartig!!. Das ganze Quartett klingt großartig!!!, BRAVO!!!!
Danke vielmals.
I still don´t know exactly what it is, but for me, this is the way to play baroque. All the members of the group are astonishing and share the same fervent character from the beginning to the end. Bravo!
About the clearest and best sound in the world ...
Thanks , With a little melancholy Elizabeth and Vioce of Music !
Yay, more Biber, one of my favorite Baroque composers! I discovered Biber in the late 90's with Andrew Manze's recordings, and now I can't get enough of him. It would be great to see you make videos of his more programatic works like the Sonata Representative and Battalia. Excellent performance as always!
Yeah Strad77, Biber is one of my faourites too. Hope to see much more on here of him
Phenomenal! Thank you so much for this wonderful Biber Sonata! Brava e bravi tutti!
Mesmerisingly wonderful - both the music and the playing of it. Spiritual, exciting and ecstatic.
:)
Biber plus Blumenstock equals Beautiful and Bold! Thank You, Thank you, Thank You!
Our pleasure!
Doctor of Historical Performance Practices here. All I can say is, “Wow. I want to play like her when I grow up.”

EB you are just such a Goddess! So moving, plaintive, sparkling, crazed, brilliant, thrilling. What a gift you are to the world. And I am ever so grateful for your influence on my life...
Simply magnificent! Thanks for posting.
wonderful sonata and wonderful played
People who don't play violin or viola can't begin to understand the level of bow control it takes to get the phrasing to be so perfect and the shaping of the sound to be what Elizabeth Blumenstock made it here. In addition, the use of vibrato in music of the high baroque is used as an ornament, and here sparing use of it, and here choice of places where she uses it shows not only an excellent understanding of it, but also a top drawer ability to interpret the music. I can't leave this comment without giving a nod to the rest of the players. Both Hanneke van Proosdij and David Tayler do a top drawer job of realizing the figured bass and William Skeen's playing is never overwhelming, and always adds to the expression of the piece overall. I've heard a good number of performances of this piece in my lifetime, and really none compare to this. I'd be hard pressed to find fault with it, and I think this performance is now my reference point for any performance I might hear in the future.
Congratulations to VoM musicians! You've done it again. You're as good as it gets.
i love it so much!! what a talented musician she is
Love Biber and his style. Voices of music definitely helps the crispiness and precision of his writing come to life. I would love to see you guys tackle all of the Rosary Sonatas from him one day.
More Biber in our future plans :)
Oh ELIZABETH You are amazing 👏💐

Is that an amazing violin? And yes the playing is the most amazing...
Oh my God she's so freaking good!!! Baroque violin is so hard!!!

Wowwwww ¡¡¡¡¡¡
That slithering serpent of seduction at 4:54 has always created such imagery for me. So well played here!
바로크 악기 너무 매력적이에여 ㅠㅠ 감동 ㅠㅠ

Could you guys play Corelli"s trio sonata op.3 no.2? Thats one of my favorite baroque pieces!

Which church is this?
😇🙃💫
What is the name of that kind of piano? I really like that sound
It's a harpsichord.
Thank you!!!
Pretty sure it’s a harpsichord
She used vibrato! This is baroque!
Vibrato dates from the middle ages.
Positively sublime! What a magnificent performance. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Elizabeth was in another place not in our world while playing this imaginary piece of music and she always send me to another magical place whenever I hear and see her playing this sonata.
Great great great performance as usual from the band and super great for Elizabeth.
Biber was kind of crazy, in a good way.
don t you think he was some sort of romantic , high spirited baroque composer. he is not the only one
He has not just a passionate intensity but there is wildness in his music like an untamed wind. There are other baroque composers with a similar feel. It seems to get lost in the transition to classical music’s smooth, ordered correctness
It's the Aesthetics of "Stylus Fantastiquus" ("Fantastic/Extravagant Style"), where every kind of limit and restrain was liquidated to let past the most extravagant and bizarre side of expression.
Esta interpretación es una maravilla. Cada vez que la escucho acabo volviendo el navegador a la imagen de Elisabeth tocando. No puedo evitarlo, aunque esté haciendo otra cosa.
superb playing! Nothing pretentious, just solid musicianship here. No hot people or pretty dresses, in fact you could mistaken the violinist for being a librarian but what great music them make here! Only baroque musicians can do that. Most other modern players eventually become some cheesy commercial package
👍
Fantastic! I have Justin Bieber songs on my phone. I don't think I have ever heard this song on the radio. Which one of his albums is this on? Do you think Heinrich here and Justin are related? ... ...
Hahaha! Joking! I can't stand that kid. I don't think I've intentionally heard any of music. Im sure he's great, but certainly not to my liking.
I do actually have a copy of von Biber's Mystery/Rosary Sonatas on my phone. They are elaborate, beautiful and certainly contemplative.
The scordatura in some of the pieces is interesting and frustrating. I tried playing some of the pieces (on mandolin) with an alternate tuning or two. It was too confusing for my feeble mind! With a combination of a note on a string (D) on a fret (4th) that I know the sound of so well after about 20 years of playing that note (F#) on that fret (4th), my brain wanted to compensate to play that F# and my ears wanted to hear it, too, so my finger (usually index) kept sneaking back 2 frets! Hahaha! I gave up. Poop! 🤪 I'll leave it to you!
Baroque is my all-time favorite musical genre and Voices of Music's performances on period instruments are always superb, flawless, and deeply satisfying for my soul. I'm glad I could at this time make a small donation. I wish I had a larger income as I could donate more. I live in the North Bay, and I am going to.make it to SF sooner or later to see VoM in person, but after the virus is under control. 😷
All of you please be careful and stay safe! Thank you for the music!
rewelacja wysoka mistyka i wysoko uduchowiona poezja, a poza tym wysoki techniczny kunszt wykonawczy! przereklamowanemu Paganiniemu do Bibera daleko!
Have watched this so many times. Elizabeth Blumenstock's performance is outstanding!
