A lot of the night land nav I did we did not have Chem lights at the point’s, just a wooden post. But that being said I agree with all the points listed.... night nav was a lot more easier for me.... did slide down a dip into a 3 foot deep creek once. Also saw guys take a Vance to the eye not wearing eye pro..... always always wear it.

In nearly 12 years of Army service as an MP with 1,000s of hours in the field at night running dismounted operations, the only thing that ever bit or attacked me or my comrades was...MISQUOTES!! Being from the city my first night in the dark by myself in basic training I was terrified! But like Buck said you gotta embrace the night & it'll be your friend. Good luck to you👍
ya i remember back in Marinecorps bootcamp night land nav was way easier cause nothing was there to really distract you, just stare at the compass and count your paces just a couple 90 degree offsets to worry about but not too bad, i do remember running into some fellow recruits who turns out were sucking each other off in a bush but thats a story for another time.

Hey Buck, this is an old video so you may have already done this, but you could answer multiple of these types of questions in a detailed (but appropriate) long format response in a podcast, have you considered this? A lot of guys, myself included like to listen to music or podcasts while working out to help get into flow. You provide a new perspective on the process and experiences relating to being a Green Beret. I’m sure there’s a lot you might cut out of these video answers thinking it’s trivial or insignificant, but some guys are looking for that additional insight and mental revision process (WHY is it insignificant or trivial). Just a thought, thanks.
I *hated* doing night patrols or movements. I hated them even more when I moved up to 2IC or Section/Patrol commander. At night, I found command and control required insane focus and concentration, adding in tactical navigation too made everything much harder. Then add in any kind of time pressure - the most stressful moments in my entire life, no joke. But I pulled through, one of the reasons was that my nav was good. Wasn't SF, was regular Infantry. Controlling 7-8 other guys at night and maintaining contact with the rest of the platoon especially when in close country made things very challenging. Definitely envied recon platoon with their 4 man groups. It really did test your basics, I had most things on point so I never had any disasters. But definitely came very close to a couple of big fuckups.
Quick tip to make land navigation easier: CONDUCT SLLS Stop look listen Smell Stop your movement or your equipment from moving. Look for any signs of student/cadre presence-food, red lights, trails, disturbed brush or ground, clues on your azimuth. Listen for any movement, vehicles, water running, engines etc Smell fuel being burned off for fire in the cold months, smell people near by, smell food cooking or any odors. *That can draw you in closer to your points.
Like he said cadre will teach you everything you need to know. Also like he said night time land nav is easier at night given you have the right mindset and good or very good point plotting and azimuth as well as pace count. The whole premise behind nighttime (no night vision) land nav is to test your raw land navigation skills as it pertains to using equipment only ie. your map, protractor, and compass. Which is all you need to navigate. A couple pointers I can give you outside of that is to pay close attention on your map after you set your azimuth periodically check what terrain features are ahead as these terrain features can help you identify where you are, if you have gone off your initial path, or to simply avoid failing unexpectedly into a creek/river bed or ditch. Do this in conjunction with rolling your steps heel to toe at a slower pace then you would during daytime when you need to be sure of footing/sudden elevation changes. Nothing sucks more than falling into a hole or ditch in the pitch black especially if you end up tumbling and get completely disoriented in terms of the direction you need to travel.
Ahhhh night navigation During selection, the reason why I went through it twice. I dropped into a hole and bent my ankle sideways. Never had worsE pain in my life. During that cycle the cadre were understanding and even gave me meds to try and get through the pain. In the end the pain was just too unbearable . Ultimately recycled and got through a few months later.

I constantly hear through those involved in special forces, that hand to hand never really takes place as it is the worst case scenario and that you always want to use your weapon. Hey brother, just turned in my packet for ARNG. I was wondering if there were any good land nav classes that I could take before shipping off to basic that would give me a good foundation. I keep hearing “you’ll learn everything there.” And that just isn’t a good enough answer for me, I want every advantage I can have. I’ve googled it but haven’t found anything that seems right yet. Thanks for the great content!
I don't know if you've shipped yet. But Matt Ward has a decent video on it. You can also find the Map he uses online, print it off, and follow along to learn the basics (may be slight variations, but the Topo itself is the same). Outside of that, you could try to look into any Local Orienteering Events/Clubs/Courses around you. Word of caution though: many of them nowadays use GPS/Smartphones, but the basic principles still hold precedent to some extent. (There are some dedicated in-person Training Courses out there - like True North Wilderness Survival School - but they require a good amount of travel depending on where you're located, some time, and money. Also with COVID shenanigans, who really knows what is happening with those)
During the star course, for some reason I abandoned all land nav techniques I learned (pace counts with beads, azimuths) and was looking at the stars. I have no idea why. I found 3 points though

When I went 4 my EIB, I passed night land nav, but failed Day land, cuz I would always get my start point off, and at night they give u the corandants were you start.
