As a portuguese I appreciate a lot your presentation. Of course there much more to say and to see. Everyone it’s welcome to our beloved country! Thank you.
Amazing sharing about the fascinating beauty of Portugal. It invites more tourists to come and visit the country. I have learned also from a FB friend about Fatima where apparition of Virgin Mary to the three children took place.
One of my grandparents came from St. Michael's in the Azores. I've been to Portugal 2x and it's beautiful. I was also born and raised in Fall River, MA which has the largest Portuguese ethnic community in the US and you can get all the typical Portuguese food products like dried salt cod, chourico, sweet bread and Casal Garcia vinho verde or green wine. Definitely one of the more affordable destinations in western Europe too.
Christopher Grillo, i find yours an amazing description. i think it's so lovely and brave how the portuguese found their communities and still show their roots from the 2nd and 3rd generation after leaving their homeland. it's so interesting! I whish i had the possibilite to afford (in time and money) and visit the community you describe and some others.. I've heard of Fall River in the portuguese main network - RTP - in a Tv report on the portuguese in US reaching noticeable positions (it was on your communities' mayor) , great info. sending you some good vibes from PT 🇵🇹
Love Portugal, it's a great country. Last summer my friend, my teen daughter and I visted Cascais and Sintra, with beautiful castles. One great thing also that I would like to mention is that we meet Infanta Margarita de Borbon (80 years old beautiful lady) sister of Rey Juan Carlos of Spain, one night, in a local restaurant, we only found out after she and her friends left 😫 . We are planning to go back next year, there is still so much to see. ❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing this information. Rick is clearly a gifted public speaker. I just took issue with the Portuguese "discovering" Brazil etc. I believe there were some people there before the Portuguese arrived :)
A.couple of points here.... Portuguese is older than the Spanish language. Lisbon is older than Rome. Portuguese is actually one of the most spoken languages in the world due to colonization. Portugal is in fact the oldest country in Europe and hasn't changed its borders ever. Im not Portuguese.
Rick great vlog, well explained about this wonderful country whatever you go with different cultures. You are ambassador of portugal , but still an know for many people. Cheers
Some people in Lisbon and Porto weren't very nice or friendly when we were there 4y ago. Most were seemed to be resentful of foreigners. But this was at the height of their recession. There were a lot of panhandlers and some were in their 20's. Porto was always rainy and damp, but loved the weather in Lisbon though. It was mostly sunny and warm in the fall similar to San Francisco.
I started working on a cruise ship about twenty years ago in Lisbon. We rented a car and drove to Fatima. Didn't know the highway was one of the most dangerous in the country. I guess angles really do watch over fools 😂 Awesome country!
A pretty good presentation ..although some details missing.. which could mislead. Might I also say a little scathing about the Brits in the country.Altho you said that the Brits owned the Port companies .It gave the impression they simple bought them. They actually set up those business's a century ago. giving employment to the area . Ditto those 'Brits' you gave a 'sniff' to in Salema. The Brits were the ones who built up most of the tourist trade in the Algarve. The Symington family ( Porto wine family ) being responsible for the first holiday cottages in Praia da Luz. This business has been responsible for creating much of the present wealth in the Algarve, after the Sardine canning industry was destroyed by political actions 'across the pond' that moved it to Spain . the Algarve is now extremely international, These wonderful people have accepted residents from all over Europe and now America and Canada ..I am proud to be a resident here
look man, you can't say that Pedro and Ines is like a Romeo and Juliet's local story. Pedro I is a king of Portugal and he died two hundred years before Shakespeare was born, so maby Romeo and Juliet's is based in Pedro and Ines life. Furthermore, it was something that actually happened, not a made-up story ...
How do you discover something that already existed that already had people? You basically discovered that you were the only population around! That is so 1950s…
Coimbra University Library is one of the most disappointing places to visit, not because it is not astoundingly beautiful, but because the only information you get is on a plastified sheet of A4. No audioguide; no booklets describing the paintings. If you are lucky or resourceful you will have found a student to show you around. I am amazed Rick managed to get a photo. God knows why you can't even take pictures in there - it is not as if you are going to damage the paintwork as the barriers keep you well away from the walls. They even have an original of the list of books forbidden by the pope (16th century??), but it is keep locked away so that no one can see it (never heard of shatterproof glass). Skip Coimbra; go to Arouca monastery.
A bit outdated in the view that the Portuguese "discovered" Brazil. Colonized is more accurate, as with most of the lands that Europeans took by force overtaking and subjugating the indigenous people they encountered.
"Not many people speak Portuguese" you mean other than the over 230 million native speakers around the world (6th most among world languages)? lol. Good presentation otherwise
This is an English-language presentation. Can we please ALWAYS refer to the river in its English name, the Tagus? And maybe as a quick footnote say "or Tejo in Portuguese." I mean, you say Lisbon, not Lisboa. Otherwise a great presentation. Just my two cents, thanks.
What about the Alentejo coast???? If you really want to relax than you should mention Alentejo coast! Algarve coast is very overrated! Believe me I’m Portuguese!

Not sure about Portugal, But in Brazil saudade means much more than nostalgia for the past, I suspect it does so as well in Portugal. I’ll have to ask
Ah,my native Country!

22:34 Lisbon predates Rome...it's the second oldest Capital city in Europe, after Athens.
Portugal gots 2° best motorway in the would
também são as mais pequenas autoestradas em questão de quilómetros kkkk
de resto é só paralelo ao monte a fazer de rua.
Lisbon is a stunning city. I want to visit it someday. It kinda reminds me of a mini-Istanbul.

You're going to stop saying 'discovered' when referring to what the explorers did, some time soon aren't you?
Are you going to call the Wokespeak Tribunal and file a report?

Portugal is Iberia. It is not Hispania.

Good thing you are here to update history. Up until now, no one had any idea that the Portuguese had colonized anybody.
