- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | Lisbon, built with the riches of Portugal's New World discoveries, has a rustic charm. We'll remember great navigators, eat lots of cod, enjoy pastries hot out of the oven, stroll the city's back lanes and its reinvigorated waterfront, marvel at an exquisite church built with spice taxes, and enjoy some soulful fado music. Then we'll side-trip to Sintra to explore the fanciful castles of Portuguese royalty and climb hilltop ramparts with grand views. I've never been to a place where no one bothered me at all. Lisbon was awesome, I felt free. And at peace.
Ahhhh! Thats what Im talking about. Beautiful European culture.
i love so much lisbon a old beautful european city cheers from kosovo love you portugal 💙💙
No matter what people say Portugal is with no doubt one of the most relaxing and beautiful countries in the world.
Besides the country being small there is so much diversity especially food and sightseeing so beautiful.
Bruno Torres it’s cringe what you said because you are portuguese
It’s like posting a meme on Facebook and then like your own post xD
Well but I guess what you said it’s true
The people is kind 😊
Bruno Torres I am not Portuguese. I am an English speaking Canadian who travels a lot. Your comments are right on. Portugal is one of the most beautiful and sanest places on the planet. With a nick name like lifeislong I might find it difficult that he/she would find good in anything.

You might not know but it means life is happiness and brightness
The post wasn’t like this it was edited
Nos it’s much better
Im Portuguese and I said that what he said it’s true
But the way it was before looked like he was promoting Portugal xD
Don’t need to judge me for my opinion but whatever

I totally agree. I have enjoyed all of his guides so far and still have many to watch. I appreciate anyone who can pursue a career over many years and still keep to and standard throughout.
Portugal is indeed a European gem. It captivated my heart. Would love to visit again soon

I am Brazilian and this video brings tear in my eyes looking all architecture that I really admire in my country and makes me realize how Portuguese is the splendor in the best of Brazil that's fading away with time. Looks like in Portugal this memory is still really vivid. Great video!
4:08 Notice the purple trees on the left? Those are Jacaranda trees! You might be familiar with them because they're native to your country, Brazil. They were obviously imported to Lisbon. Jacarandas are gorgeous and exotic because of their brilliant purple flowers: they're very particular about where they grow, so they're rare, but they happen to grow nicely in my home town of Los Gatos in the Bay Area! Thanks Brazil! Thanks Gustavo!
SIMKINETICS They grow in Australia as well. There’s a city in Austrália that is famous because of the Jacaranda trees “imported” from Brazil. There’s even something similar to a parade that takes place every year to celebrate the blossoming of the Jacarandá. It’s beautiful!!
Most things fade in time but are usually replaced with something else. Brazil has something that's so beautiful, so heart warming, it's the envy of the entire world. It's the music of Brazil. I love it.
@@fernandosr2001 Jacaranda also grow in Pretoria, South Africa. Not sure if they are indigenous here. We get many Japanese groups visiting Pretoria just to see the Jacaranda trees. Sorry for belated comment
@@brigittebenjamin9528 - The origin of Jacaranda is Argentina Paraguai e Brasil but same species like Dalbergia are also distributed at Africa, Madagáscar, Austrália and Asia.
I have been to Lisbon, it is beautiful city and I had a wonderful holiday there.
Great place to visit!
As a brazilian, I love Portugal architecture and food, to imagine that 2 centuries ago Rio de Janeiro was similar to this... I feel ashamed everytime I see to what it is now
bootlicker
Don't be. in forty years at the most, Lisbon will be much worse than the worst favela in Rio.
(a favela is a characteristic slum in Rio de Janeiro, notorious for its extreme misery, extreme violence and horrible life conditions)
@@pr4vda Substituir a arquitetura tradicional por prédios modernistas e arranha-céus destrói a memória histórica e o espírito de um povo. Não é a toa que somos uma nação cheia de homens ocos.

Hello Diana, how are you doing today?
I am a Indian after watching Steve's all programs I really enjoying bcoz Steve's explore everything history and culture and food also I have say no words about Steve's you are the great person 👍
I hung out on the streets of Lisbon selling artwork for a while. It makes me emotional to see the hidden gems that I would discover while wandering around town. Love this country, and this city has my heart.
No, you have my heart!!! ROCK ON BROTHER
My favourite city to visit. I've been visiting since 1983 when I was intrigued by a comment in the 'Hitchhikers Guide To Europe" that suggested it was an interesting time to visit the country after its revolution of 1974. The city that I visited then was a bit downtrodden with all of the public transport (trams and buses) dating from the 1920s and 1930, but it was utterly charming.
At that time, all of the city squares, that you see in this video, were car parks. The city was buzzing but a bit dirty. It was certainly off the beaten track. It was fairly hard to get to - not many affordable flights then, and it was easier to travel by train or bus. At that time, a lot of the population had emigrated to work in France.
The city has certainly cleaned up a lot but I do miss some of the old Lisbon that has gone forever. When I first visited, there was no charge to visit the Castle and there seemed to be some sort of menagerie there while the locals played cards. There was also a tram (trolley) that went pretty much straight up to the castle. Sadly a lot of it has gone, and you have to take a bus (or walk).
Still, it is always nice to go back from time to time.
Your comment brings back so many memories ... I was a student in Lisbon in 1966 when Salazar and the dictatorship still existed and, politics aside, life was so slow and sweet and 19th century style ... although there was poverty and life was very simple, there were no horrible slums, everything was clean and very safe and the people were so sweet and truly hospitable ... I have been back many times and have seen the modernization and many, many very welcome improvements but the Portuguese character has not really changed. It's my favorite place.
Ive been to many countries and Portugal tops them ALL for peace and tranquillity. And Lisbon is just beyond description !

It does looks amazing

I lived there in 2008, such a beautiful city and country! Thanks for the memories.
As a fishiterian i almost like all type of fishes & cod its one of my favorite very unique taste and its smell love it.
I am from Malacca. Malacca and Portugal share some common history. When I heard about
Vasco da Gama in this documentary, it alerts me about our history in common. Even my school embraces a sport team with the name
Afonso de Albuquerque.
Malaca was one of the most important Portuguese trading port of Asia...big history there...
My favourite list to visit here. I want to go soon . What a beautiful place and happy to watch such a beautiful sight.

Portugal 🇩🇪 🇵🇹 🇩🇪 🇵🇹 🇩🇪 ❤❤❤❤❤
All of Portugal, from north to south to its Atlantic islands, is simply stunning. A tiny European country with a gargantuan history filled with culture and tradition. Portugal has remained true to its roots and has not been swept away by modernity as have many other. In this fact is Portugal made unique. A must see for lovers of history and historic authenticity. Adore my Lusitanian heritage.
JUST LOVE THESE OLD TRAMS...NO MATTER IN WHICH CITY OR TOWN...
Welcome to Lisbon. I’m lucky to become a português and my husband in from Lisbon
I will never get enough of Portugal!!! Grew up there and still dream about going back one day!!! Well done Rick!!!
Before the Romans there were many others: the original ones, Iberians and Celtiberians, then the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Alans, Vandals, Sueves, Visigoths, Moors, Crusaders and the new invaders - the Western oligharcs who are buying and destroying the country! What Napoleon couldn't do, the new barbarians, the Americans and their media, are easily doing!... I'm proud and love my country - Portugal, the first global empire with a long history, rich culture, plenty of castles, monuments, and museums, beautiful cities, unique natural landscapes, huge maritime resources and... excellent food and wines! God help, one day I'll go back!
Welcome to Portugal all of you :) greetings

You mean that San Francisco has a Lisbon vibe?
I was wondering this too, so i decided to look it up... It turns our San Francisco actually used horse drawn street cars before Lisbon did. San Francisco also seemed to have switched to electric street cars about 30 years before they appeared in Lisbon. So given the context i think it's fair to say that, historically, Lisbon has a San Francisco vibe when it comes to street cars
Regardless of who came first, he is American and the video is targeted towards Americans so the comparison should be to something most Americans know: San Francisco
@@prado1205 right, the order isn't important. It doesn't matter whether apples taste like cider, or if cider tastes like apples. All you want to know is who is selling you the product? In this case; an American. Exclusively reaching American speakers. If switching the origins around makes it easier to convey the message, he'll do so...
Well, either way, if both cities (and maybe even others) were able to get use out of this system, it seems like a win for everyone :)
Maurice sure, but if you only ate cider your whole life and I were making a video on apples, I’d tell you “Apples taste like cider”
@@prado1205 Wouldn't it be a bit strange though to consume cider all your life but never once try to find out what it's made of?
