  • Disclaimer: nobody paid me to make this video or to include the ukulele from their brand in this list. The ukuleles chosen for this video are the ukuleles that I keep reaching for.
    I recently moved to California with my parents. Jose and I got a divorce. I am really sorry to tell you this way. I've been wanting to communicate it to you somehow, but making a video about it seems like something distasteful. Jose and I split up because one of us wanted a family and the other didn't.
    Why am I telling you this? Well, the silver lining in this is that my parents have started learning ukulele. As beginners, I really want them to have a positive first experience with the instrument and I have been using these ukuleles as I teach them. I realized I kept reaching for the ukuleles with the best sound, most comfortable action (string height), and that are the easiest to hold. So if you're wondering why these ukuleles made it onto this video, that's why :)

    As a 78 yr old total beginger with the ukulele I am so pleased to find your very helpful videos on youtube. They
    are such fun to watch and I find lots of information to help a old chap who wanted a new hobby. Keep up the good work, don't feel too down, you are gorgeous and I hope will soon find a new love. Take care from the UK.

    I cannot thank you for doing something I thought was impossible: Making me feel confident I can actually learn to play an instrument. I am the only one in my immediate family (my kids and their dad) who could not play an instrument. In three weeks, I am thrilled to be playing actual songs on my ukulele. My 94 year old dad is in a rehab, recovering from covid-19 and we can't see him, so I played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star from Video 13 of the challenge for him over the phone and he was so happy! Someday I'll be able to play along with my family and play for the students at the elementary school where I teach because you're such an awesome teacher. And I appreciate this particular video because I am working on an inexpensive starter uke with no name behind it, since I bought it without knowing much. I'll be looking for a better one and these videos are really helpful in making a decision.

    I could watch videos like this all day. It really speaks a lot about an instrument if you consistently keep picking it up to play despite other options. I think this is a great idea for a video series.
    Also, sorry to hear about you and Jose. I understand it must have been hard to figure out a way to tell us without it being the focus of a video. We love you and support you in the next phase of your journey. ❤️

    I enjoyed this video. Love your instructional but this is an idea that's spreading in the community. Jodi ( Girl meets Uke ) does a kind of side bar to her regular posts and calls it Uke and Me. Barry Maz here in the UK adds in the ocassional rant as he calls it and some vids of him playing a favourite instrument and song. It's all good and I hope you continue to do this as well as your other vids. On the subject of the big D, keep your chin up. There is a plan for each of us but we don't get a menu,it's all a surprise. At 68 I have been on my own again since September last year and the process is not yet complete. BUT if I hadn't found myself on my own I wouldn't have found this instrument or this wonderful community online and in the world. You will get what your heart needs in the fulness of time. Some of us out here had already worked it out and I'm guessing that you're the one that wants a family. Well you love working with kids so it's no big leap. Even my granddaughters are adult now but I still get the chance to be with little kids every December. Like this little instrument they make your heart glad. Bless you for sharing. ❤

    I also own an Enya and a Flight Victoria, both in Low G. The Flight is my favourite, but the Enya is much worth it´s money. I really love the smoth feeling of the (rounded!) richlite-fretboard. The fact, that you can simply take the neck apart by removing the strap button is also a very nice thing to have, putting it into your travelbag on the airplane. And the price for this is simply stuning.

    You are the one that inspired me to learn ukulele. I had given up on learning a stringed instrument and I was learning sax but it wound up hurting my neck. I was getting depressed and was watching your videos and decided to go to the music shop. Within a week I bought 2 ukes and I have another on order and I am looking into yet another! Bernadette, you are a blessing to the ukulele community. I remember that video where you gave that ukulele to Rich and thought "what an amazing and kind woman to follow and gift an amazing and kind man like Rich". You both are such genuine fellow uke lovers and generous with sharing your talents and time. Kudos to you for following your heart's desire. I am sure you will find your soul mate. Lovely to meet you in San Diego! I'm the lady who came with girl scout cookies and blew bubbles on the second day. Ya, I know how to party! Lol! Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Sept. at the LA Uke Fest. That said, I think monthly/quarterly uke show-n-tell sounds great. It would be terrific to know what's out there. For this show-n-tell, I prefer the Kanile'a for its warmer tones and you can hear each string clearly and cleanly. But, what do I know, I have untrained ears.
    Now that you're back in California, may I be so bold as to suggest your next Bernadette Flight ukukele be emblazoned with California poppies? As a California girl, I'd love to have one, or two.
    You are a kind soul, Bernadette. We are blessed to have you as our teacher. May you be blessed with peace in your heart, love in your soul, music and friends, all around you.

    Bernadette, I really love this idea. I love the Uma Pulse its cool how it has the heartbeat pulse going down the fret board.
    Unlike you though, I on the other hand am a tinkerer by nature. I love fixing things. My chocolate lab Roxie recently stepped/jumped on my favorite ukulele crushing the top in. I was heartbroken I could have been mad but she didn't know. I looked at it as a challenge, after some research I decided to fix it myself. I repaired all the bracing inside, glued, sanded and refinished the entire uke . I added my own little touches to it to make it me. To me it sounds better now than before and you can't tell it had ever been damaged. I enjoyed doing this and now find myself wanting to build one from the ground up. Anyway enough of that.
    I loved this video, seeing your favorites and hearing the sound comparisons. Thanks for this, you are AWESOME.😎🤙

      Hey Danny!! Mr. Do-it-yourself :)
      Glad you fixed that ukulele. It’s so sad it happened to your favorite one. Was it expensive?

    • @dannyjohnson9592
      @dannyjohnson9592 5 років тому

      @@BernadetteTeachesMusic To me it was exspensive but not to bad not the most expensive but definitely my favourite. I did learn alot about the construction process. I ordered a uke kit from Stewmac and a few luthier tools. So I figured I would start with this. Then if that goes well, try my hand at building one all the way through. But yes I feel comfortable with repairs now. Lol

I hope they’re making more after selling them out, I’d like to get one. (I am totally intrigued by that Uma Pulse)

      Bernadette Teaches Music First the look inspired genuinely especially the headstock... The strings sound really amazing and they are ‘like butter’ 🤩 We like the idea that the strings are transparent. The fingerboard is a bit wider than the others which is also great. The price is so good for a good quality on this ukulele ❤️ ps. The colour of the wood is stunning 😻 and we also like the idea that it’s not a real wood so that we don’t spend a lot of wood for just ukuleles !

    I just don't know where to begin. I am in love with you, and your style! Don't be creeped out, I'm a 62 year old women who decided in the time of Covid that I needed to expand what was going on in my life. I started playing in April and I seriously think that the Ukulele brought me through some trying times. I just found your 30 day challenge and your first review of ukuleles (as I was considering a concert ukulele). I want you to know that I am inspired, and impressed, and excited by all that I have found on your You Tube classes (is that the right terminology?) Any way, thank you and I am so looking forward to this journey!!!

      Well I only have one from Enya which is the Tenor Enya EUT-X1C HPL Cutaway comparing to my two Flights including the Sakuralele Soprano and Flight Duc455 Concert, so I'm definitely a Flight fan and watching your opinion on the Victoria makes it to my list of "Which Flight Tenor to buy next". So thank you!

    I really like this type of video. It's not easy choosing the right ukulele. Your easy going presentation helps me see what's what. To my ear, both of the Uma's sounded best. They had a rich full tone.

    This is a wonderful video! I spent a month looking over various ukuleles on the internet before purchasing one. I sure wish I had found your channel before going through all that, as I could have heard the tone and seen the ukuleles right here, played by you, and had a few lessons to begin with as well!
    Thank you so much!

    The X1 is made of laminate plastics. Very durable yes, and it has a very nice neck and tuner but the edge work where the seams meet is wide and not very attractive.
    I find the Enya EUT-70 to be a bit sweeter sounding, the KOA laminate is more attractive and the abalone around the sound hole is a very nice touch. It would be nice to show a side by side comparison of the two models. Both are quality Enya products.

    Love these tutorials! Do you have any new ones planned? I’d love to hear what your new summer faves are for 2020. Also, how do you feel about buying ukes online without getting to try them in person. Obviously these videos are a big help in making decisions about online purchases, but any other tips? Might be helpful to hear an example of a dull sounding uke next to a more resonate one so we can hear the difference. Thanks Bernadette!!

    Would be nice if you mentioned the width at the nut on those favorites. I recently purchased an Islander MT-4, 1.5" at nut. I like it.

    • @markh8901
      @markh8901 5 років тому

      If I remember right all Islander came 1.5" or 38mm nut width. It is a good choice for people who couldn't cut their nail below the "meat" tip because it would hurt. Also people with big hands or fingers.

    Love all of your videos and I want to thank you for being the first one to bring the ukulele to me! I used to play the guitar but I have arthritis in my fingers so have picked up the ukulele. It is still quite painful but I am learning. Based on this video it sounds like the strings on the Enya are the softest, would you agree? If so, can their strings be purchased? I do have a soprano Enya already but find it too small. I also have a Lanikai Baritone (because of your review) and a Amahi tenor.

      We have that Enya, plus the concert size. It is a quiet ukulele, which we like for practicing in the house. I put Martin strings on my concert and it's still just as quiet.

    You are such a loving and loved person and a wonderful teacher. Playing the ukulele has helped me out of a deep funk I had fallen into for the past few years. Your videos are fabulous. I have a Kala solid acacia soprano which I adore and an Oscar Schmidt OU5 concert which I am so disappointed with (my problem child). No matter what strings I put on, it comes out sounding so muffled. I would like to purchase a Flight Travel ukulele (I love strumming by a campfire with friends). Can the ABS plastic be drilled into to add a strap button or would you recommend using a Command adhesive hook instead? Again, thank you for your extraordinary lessons and your lovely personality 😁👍
