Love your videos and live sessions! My ukulele skills have improved drastically over the last 3 months. One mistake I've worked on is playing too fast. It really helps to play new songs at a very slow tempo to make sure the chords sound correct. Then speed up the tempo gradually until the song can be played at the right tempo.

Great video Bernadette! I like how you explain and demonstrate. I especially found the thumb tip very helpful. I have a question for you or for anyone on here. Whenever I play my ukulele outdoors and it is slightly cool outside, the strings themselves feel less fluid. Despite tuning it, it seems less natural to strum it outdoors in cooler (I'm talking 65 degrees, so not that cool!) weather. Could it also be the humidity? It's just discouraging because it is to nice to play uke outside!

Hi!! I know my question is about a different instrument but I really need help. My son is starting 6th grade band and wants to play the saxophone. Unfortunately right now paying the rental fee from the music shop is too much. I searched online and saw the brand muslady and they sell a saxophone for 200 ish. I am not an expert and I would hate to purchase it if it won't help him. What are your thoughts? Have you heard of the brand?

Hi Mina, I have not heard of that brand, I am sorry. I would much rather have you look on craigslist or ebay for a Yamaha sax or a Selmer sax. I got an off brand alto sax recently and I have not touched it because it never sounds in tune... such a shame

OH MY GOOD LORD! I've been placing my thumb in the wrong place FOR 2 YEARS!!! I have been putting it where it felt natural for me which was gripping the edge of the fretboard! The song by Linda Rondstadt called "Faithless Love" has a chord change of Eb to Ab, and the "web area" between my thumb and my index finger would scream for mercy when I'd play it. It's been so awkward & painful that when I come to that note, I make the worst wincing face - every single time! I will break this habit! (Fist in the air!) THANK YOU, BERNADETTE! (Also, my "LOOK UP" t-shirt came in and it's SO cute!!!! Hugs!

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic

Hi Terry!!! I’m so glad to hear that you found a solution to your switch from Eb to Ab! Some people do put the thumb where you used to put your thumb before this video with no problem. I have just seen that putting the thumb in the back center gives so much more reach and flexibility. I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!! ❤️❤️❤️

@Mini Zycie If I recall, I think I did see a video of Bernadette's a while back where she does show how to hold the ukulele properly without a strap and she mentioned she'd teach this to the kids at the school in Japan. I'm not sure of the name of the video but it probably has something to do with beginner type of info or getting started or something like that. Sorry I don't recall for sure, but I'm 99.99999% positive I did see a video like this from her.

I was hoping to see the definitive way to strum the uke. I have recommenced working with the baritone lately. I hook my forefinger and sometimes back it up with my thumb whereas I see others loosely hooking the forefinger without the thumb backer. Also, I tend to hold the remaining fingers in a loose semi curled arrangement but I see others having the remaining fingers completely flat and outstretched. Does it make a difference?

I recently changed my strings. They used to be A D F# B (they weren't able to hold the tuning and sounded a bit mjeh) and I changed to good quality strings in G C E A. I think they are set now but some chords sounds pretty awfull. For example. C sounds ok and F as well but a G chord sounds really off. Could it just be me not beeing used to the strings tuning or something else?

Hi Bernadette! Thank you for this video (and all the tutorial videos you made, they're super useful!). I struggle with chord change a lot if I don't wear a strip, but I also feel I need to learn it otherwise it may hinder my future ukulele skills progression. What do you think of it? Is it okay if I wear the strip all the time during practice?

My ukulele sounds really weird and like I don’t know why when I press down on a string to like does not play anything and it’s bringing me down

Perhaps strumming with big arm movement rather than turning the wrist.

I noticed that In the 5th mistake you were putting your thumb on the bac, is your thumb always supposed to be near the back like that?

So there are people who have the sound hole facing towards them?!! Hehe..that's a bit funny to even imagine. Like how is that even possible.

They are just trying to see their fretboard hand, so they don't notice the ukulele is facing them ;/
