I have a '77 short shaft tiller steer 35hp Evinrude....it was used once by the previous owner and he decided it was too big for his boat...instead of moving it on, he left it to sit on it's stand in his garage for over 40 years before selling it to me...the prop didn't have a scratch on it when I got it (I've put about 25hrs on it now)...Apart from a new impeller, spark plugs and gear oil change, I haven't had to touch anything on it....Runs Beautifully! I also have an '82 with gearbox issues that I'm working on so might learn a thing or two from your future videos hopefully.
My 1978 evenrude 35 hp kicks out of gear when giving any throttle beyond trolling speed in forward only someone told me there is some linkage missing from the throttle to the carb does that make sense
Hey, love your videos and been playing with some old outboards my self! Wondering where you get you parts. I really like the older Evinrudes and Johnson’s ! Fun little motors😬 Learning a lot from your videos . Thanks.
Even if the dealer knew it was likely a head gasket, that alone would cost more to fix there than that motor is worth. The hourly rates around here range anywhere from $145 to $250/hr. Most won't work on old motors, in fact, most won't work on anything older than about 10 or so years these days. A buddy took his 2003 four stroke in because it wouldn't start in the spring, He wanted an oil change, and the carb gone through. He was told they don't rebuild carbs, they replace them and since it was 20 year old, there's no parts available for it. Yet they charged him $147.50 plus tax for an oil change and gave it back to him still not running. He was pissed off about that and dumped the motor off here and told me to keep it or scrap it, he'll never buy another Mercury. He went out and spent nearly $8k on a new Yamaha. I cleaned out the carb and its a good running motor but its proven to be nearly unsellable here. Its in near new condition, has had minimal use, maybe one or two days on the river at best considering the original owner was in his 80's. Plus its a fresh water run motor. If it werent' a year older than my own motor, I'd likely keep it but it seems a 2003 15hp tiller motor has almost no value here. I listed it at $800, and got nothing but complaints, and $100 offers. Old two strokes get zero attention. They're $200 motors at best lately. I run an '82 35hp on my one aluminum boat, a rope start remote steer motor that came with it on which I added a charging system and starter with a simple push button and key on the dash. Its been a great motor which never gave me any issues other than its a bear to pull start due to the compression. I just picked up 5 more same era 35hp motors off CL in PA, they were listed all winter for cheap with no takers so having to drive half way there for something else, I added two hours to the trip and picked them all up for one price, roughly $50 each. The lot consists of one stuck 1982 Long shaft remote 35hp Johnson, but it looks like a new motor otherwise, one 1981 35hp Johnson, also a remote long shaft that runs but needs a w/p and carb from sitting, a minty clean 85 Evinrude 30hp that runs as is but will be getting a new impeller and likely a carb cleaning, a 1980 Johnson 35hp short shaft, rope start that runs sometimes, and sometimes not, it looses spark at random. Its a clean looking motor that the guy said he bought new and had been chasing the issue since day one but its gotten the point where it won't start more than it will. Its gonna get the electronics off the stuck motor and become the new motor for my 14ft Starcraft. The last motor is a 1979 Johnson 35hp, remote long shaft with what looks like a new prop, lower unit housing, and new carb. Its got a dealer hang tag still on it from 1984 saying it was a trade in at a dealer in Indianna. I didn't get around to starting that one since its been winterized or pickled with some heavy oil or something. Its dusty but will clean up nicely. I listed the last motor on FB and CL here and got zero interest, not so much as a low ball offer all spring. Not that I'm really that concerned about selling it since I run those motors but to test the market a bit. What I find is that if its not a near new 4 stroke, 9.9hp electric start tiller for under $500 no one wants it. If you ask $800, you get $200 offers, if you ask $600, you get $50 offers, if you ask $1,000 or more, you get no replies.
I have the same engine which started running rough. Pulled the spark plugs and found water on one of the plugs! Is this a head gasket issue? How is water getting into the cylinders? Any advice?
Got a 1981 35hp evinrude remote outboard, with baot i bought last year, but its in pieces, no carb house wiring engine harness, but good compression, looking for donor
Hello! Great video. I just acquired a 1978 Johnson 35 long shaft tiller. I have a question about water coming out of the port just on the lower cowling behind the choke and Killswitch. I could send you a picture of the exact location. Unfortunately UA-cam does not allow me to do that. I was curious to know what the possible cost for that would be water is coming out of the normal p hole and it runs great. Just wondering why there’s water coming out of there and how to cure it. Also where did you get a water pump kit for these motors? The model number of my motor is 35RL78R. Thank you - Aaron
I have a 1982 35 hp johnson on a 15 ft flat bottom john boat wit h a 3 blade prop. I want to put a 3 blde stainless steal prop on, but having a problem finding them. Also what would be the correct size and pitch. Thank you Roy
Check the lash on those piston wrist pins. Bring the piston about halfway up in the cylinder. Take three or four fingers and pull the piston against the side of the cylinder block to kind of lock it, then slightly rock the flywheel back and forth and see if you feel any slack. I've found a few over the years that had lots of slack in there. One cracked a piston from slapping around. With that said, I ran a 65 hp Triumph for years with 3 pistons with loose wrist pins. I have a V4 90 hp now with one loose wrist pin that runs perfect and isn't making any discernable noise. That's something I've learned to check over the years.
if it's the upper water tube grommet I do believe you do. If it's the lower then no, just remove the gear box. I will double check mine in the morning and let you know for sure.
Hi Michael, awesome work and very informative! Did you ever do a part 3 of this? I have almost exactly the same problem, overheated and now 8psi difference between chambers, runs but rough, the cylinders look perfect. Did the head gasket solve the issue with it.? Hoping not to have to do hone and rings :/ Thanks in advance!!! Michael

Hello friend, I am from Argentina! I have a johnson 35 model 81 that wets the spark plug of the cylinder below and begins to fail ... I took all the electrical part to review a specialist and they told me that it is ok, I did many tests with the gasoline pump and with the carburetor and I can't find the key ... something like this happened to you, ever? Please I need help!!!
Since someone tinkered around with that engine and left the head gasket bolts loose, you might want to check the power head bolts if they were loosened also.
I agree with gorp27. I had good look on those engines i have a 1989 Evinrude 28hp that i paid 50 bucks for that had the same problem slapped in a head gasket and i been running it for 10 years.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thanks for your reply I’m about to purchase some now and give it a go!
For the price of the gasket definitlely worth the investigation , a pressure test would have answered a couple of questions
The 25 psi on each cylinder is a dead give away of head gasket between cylinders providing the engine has a gasket in which this case it has ....
Always curious , please post an update , good luck
OH for sure more to come. I will make it run or part it out on the channel.
It was a marketing scheme to put Humminbird electronics in your boat!
Marketing scheme for who?
i picked up a 71 20 hp and no compresion on one cylinder and pulled the head and scored to heck. so its a parts engine. LOL

when a motor gets that hot the cyl. separate from the block just wasting time and money.
