I have a 1981 Johnson, I was facing the same exact issue (with that collar on the butterfly linkage). I was about to throw the thing in garbage because I simply couldn’t figure it our. Once I did figure it out, I could get everything out of the outboard that was suppose to be. I guess those collars just slip with time because my collar was in the same exact place. Fantastic motor and I love it (now)!

Michael, I'm not saying you made a mistake, but it appears in the video that you set your throttle plate at horizontal with the motor in neutral. It should be done with the motor in gear so that the plate will be horizontal at wide open throttle. Hope I'm wrong, but you may want to check that......... Thanks for another great video.

Just watched you put the screws back in this carb bowl. Just a suggestion. Use a little blue Locktite. I didn't when I rebuilt the carb on my Johnson 35 and the vibration from running worked the screws loose and the bowl almost fell off the carb and I had to get towed back to the dock. Not fun!

Also, (geeze, I hate to sound critical - please don't take it this way; just trying to be helpful) my 2000 OMC factory spark plug chart shows the electrodeless plugs recommended only for a 1976 35. For 1977 and up, the QL77JC4 is the recommended plug. 1977 is when the 35 got the full power-pack ignition. So, your 1979 should have the QL77JC4 set at .030" according to the OMC chart. L77JC4 is fine also if you don't have electronics and it costs less. The Q plug is a suppressor plug, so as not to interfere with electronics. Hope this helps. Thanks for the great videos. Looking forward to the next one. Mike

You are probably aware that round about 1990 they started to rate outboard HP differently than in 72.Rated at prop rather than crank or visa-versa. I replaced a 70s 35 with a 92 Yamaha 40hp and it had much more oomph!!! P.S. With a more modern 50 hp you would get up on plane quickly and be able to throttle back considerably and stay up on plane without motor being maxed out.
