Great to see Gez on your channel. Completely agree that nervous system regulation is key. Keeping as active as possible without exacerbating symptoms too much has been key for me too. I got worse by resting and pacing too much. My POTS improved massively by increasing activity whilst working to keep my nervous system calm. Still on the journey after two years, but getting there!

My experience at month 6 now, is that anxiety is the trigger, not doing. Anxiety often gets me doing things which is why I think "doing" seems to make it worse. I just went on a 4 mile run today and felt great after, but if I start worrying about my symptoms, by immune system goes into overdrive and starts causing damage all over my body.

I feel the exact same way! It’s absolutely debilitating to say the least, I have PTSD from my tours overseas and have anxiety but now that I have long Covid the anxiety can just be I stand and cannot turn it off! I’m same way in that I go for long runs or work out hard and feel great but then a few minutes later I’ll think of anything and “wham” huge anxiety that just makes my body and mind go into overdrive. I explain it like this, it’s like pushing the gas peddle and you try to release it and it’s just stuck on the whole time and can’t let it go.

Oof, Raelan - "It's like I was kidnapped from my life, yet there was no team trying to find me or save me. The world just kept going, and I just disappeared".
I'd love you to do a video talking about what it's like to lose relationships through chronic illness if you're up for it? The only person left in my orbit now is my partner, and it's been crushing learning how little people will try to show up if we go through the worst of circumstances. And, when I'm trying to imagine a happy future on the other side of this, I get stuck with picturing how I could feel at ease around people again and throw myself wholeheartedly into building new friendships, because I'll have this nagging sense that they're all ultimately fair-weather friendships that will evaporate one day. It's difficult picturing how these last few years could be forgotten and moved past in that way. So, any tips? :)

My son still hasn't received his covid unemployment from three years ago. Government offices still aren't open, yet they're getting paid? What's going on? My son saw 17 doctors last year. None could help him!!! This year I take him to a chiropractor, whose book I read. He thought his son was going to die, just like I thought about my son. I was so hopeful. I thought he'll understand. He'll care....nope, he does one 2 second procedure and tells him to take vitanins C and Zinc. Then charges $200.

Hi, I'm one of your followers for over a year allready - both of you helped me incredibly lot keeping hope in my darkest and most desperate times. I bought Gez' book imediately in february 23 and took every minute without brainfog for reading some few pages.
Brain Retrain, breathwork, meditation and selfcare brought me from bedbound to travel and skiing again. I almost can't believe it myself. I'm more than gratefull for both your chanels! In German language I only found stuff, that made me more sick than bevore. Please keep going!!!
Bevor LC I did extremely lot biking and hiking in the Alps. I was grieving a lot about losing it all for ever, couldn't manage a few steps, took several days after one shower to be somehow something like back to "normal". Many other symptoms, but now almost recovered. I'm celebrating every new day, every thing - no matter how small - that I can do again. My family has me back after a long time of tears.

It is in dark moments that a correct attitude is most important. If we fight against the darkness, we are swallowed by it and suffer misfortune. If we react to the lack of visible progress with despair and negativity, we extinguish our own inner light and block the aid of the Higher Power. If we try to persuade others that they must return to the light, we exhaust ourselves in vain now.
In a time such as this is it wise to adopt a stance of outer disengagement and inner perseverance. Do not focus on or interact with the negative influences around you; this only strengthens their grip on you. Step aside, yield, let go, allow people and events to pass without attachment. Direct your attentions inside to your inner light, your devotion to what is right, your conversation with the Higher Power.
To have patience with oneself is to have self-love. Progress may be slow, but there will indeed by progress after inner realignment. Growth takes time. Remember that much of the work of the Higher Power is hidden from us, and that we enable and assist it by remaining detached, accepting, and reserved in the face of negative influences.

Great video. Tons of good advice and conversation. Gez provides a great perspective and is a tremendous resource and has been since 2020, when I started following him as someone with LC. I've made a lot of progress following many of the things you spoke of -- but I'm not where I was before all this (used to run marathons) largely because of heart-related issues I've developed that are limiting AND I've unfortunately have had a couple of COVID infections recently and they can rekindle things that nothing else can.
That all said, I disagree that a marathon mindset won't cut it. I agree that the idea where hard work/pushing through often brings benefits from running/marathon training is definitely not what is needed with LC, but the marathon mindset is soooo much more than that. It's about being able to adjust to new realities, having discipline to follow a plan and to never give up on hope, even when all seems lost or unattainable (crashing at mile 20 of a marathon OR having to drop out brings these type of emotions). Going through such disappointments is not battling an chronic illness, but it did bring me an important mental toughness that has helped me tremendously as I work to heal from LC, especially all the ups and downs. In a lot of ways, it's like a marathon that we never meant to enter but did and has the worst weather and terrain ever.
Anyway, the video definitely worth watching beyond my minor quibble. Best of luck with your channel and helping people understand these conditions. That is important work.

The forced extra rest serves as a reminder that I can feel much better than I allow myself. Now I have two days per week to do nothing or whatever brings me joy (aside from hygiene and cook quick one pot meals). It really helps! Regarding PEM/PESE, I just wanted to point out that it's possible to get an exacerbation of symptoms immediately following exertion/activity and a further exacerbation 24 to 48 hours later, so it's not necessarily that easy to identify whether it's safe to slowly increase activity in the way Gez describes. I think you need to be cautious with any exacerbation of your general symptom profile if you meet the criteria for ME/CFS. I feel recovery comes before activity, that is you can only increase activity to the extent your condition has already improved. Improvement is not linear or predictable. If you do start to improve, it's also all to easy to increase activity too much or too fast and tip back into a crash.

What's helped me the most has been pacing, sunlight, meditation (combo with sunlight for best results imo), and a nutritious, gut healing diet. As a lactose tolerant person, that's a lot of low pasteurized milk (and farm fresh raw milk if you're lucky enough to have access) and probiotic dairy, eggs, meat, and cooked vegetables, the meat and vegetables being cooked in easy on the stomach fats like coconut oil or ghee. I've also done a lot of the other interventions recommended in Gez's videos, but found none of them were that noticeably impactful. I'm sure they helped, but I didn't experience the "Wow, within a week I feel better" results as I did with the above things. Each one I listed seemed to jump my recovery ahead when added.

I don't want to blame anyone and I appreciate that you give space to all kind of people sharing their experiences.
But I have to admit that this approach never was and even now isn't helping. From my experience I only got better from calming down my nervous system, learning to create safety and trust within myself. I respect all the effort Gez was making over the years, but it's not for me. Trying to find the answers out there, trying to fix etc. isn't the solution from my point of view. This endless searching for solutions is not the cure. If someone is okay with just managing symptoms it might be okay, but it will never hit the root cause, which is a hypersensitive nervous system.

Totally agree… I followed Gez’s content for 2 years and didn’t see any progress. He is totally good intentioned but his type of content focussed on outside solutions do not help. Then I shifted my focus to mind-body content (trauma work, polyvagal, somatic, brain retraining) and recovery stories. I also had to stop watching content from people like Gez and any of the mainstream well-intentioned doctors and scientists… and I am now 90% recovered.

I totally agree. After 3 years I am 90-95% recovered and what made the most difference for me was acceptance, regulating my nervous system and resolving past traumas. (still working on that) I hated it when anyone who recovered told me that Long Covid was a MindBody thing, but I experienced it the hard way and now believe that for some of us at least it's a combination of some Mind Body approaches. If you are feeling somewhat normal or better in some occasions throughout the day for a few hours or even 1-2 days a month that's a sign that your symptoms may not be physiological.

I would venture to hypothesis it’s not just “the Epstein bar viral” but maybe the herpes viral or combination of virals being reactivated and possibly underlying yet unknown untreated driving the mast cell response to stressors then cascading with dysautonomia… POTS presents. Just a hypothesis. I don’t think the mass cells just keep going off unless there’s something signaling there’s a threat and may be these viral’s that don’t ever really fully go away yet lie dormant and wait for a stressor are the mechanism signaling the mass cells that then signal dysautonomia that then signal POTS . To me that is what I feel happening within my system. Stress load of any variety kicking off a viral like symptom load then the mast cells explode and often then bacterial infections due to the mucus membrane tissue inflammation then the dysautonomia dynamic of blood vessels veins inflamed then POTS.

Just an observation. Gez is still wound up like a top. He appears like a normal, healthy, person that has just 3 or 4 coffees. He can talk about all the science behind long COVID and use antihistamines and serotonin upregulating medications and talk about how he incorporates mindfulness, mediation and mind body approaches, but until he truly trains his brain to calm the hell down he will not fully recover. It's interesting to notice the affect that Gez's high level or arousal has on Raelan. In the intro Raelen's speech is slower, less urgent, but as the interview begins Gez's high state of urgency is almost contagious, as Raelen speech increases in velocity and more urgency. Once one realizes this, they will understand what is at the core of this illness, which is is a constant state of threat, stress, and unease and the inability to dampen those effects, and self soothe to regulate the nervous system.

There are over 100 different mediators of MCAS other than histamine. I'm one that has other ones.

18:15 Mast cells activation and dysautonomia - I actually think that these two ARE ME/CFS. It would be helpful if we could just stop using the names as ME, long covid, and just focus on the specific dysautonomia types and mast cell activation symptoms.
Some people are really supported by drugs. Myself, not so much, but then again, if you know that me/cfs iis actually dysautonomia and MCAS, you can also target these with 'natural' treatments. This was a huge part of my recovery, learning how to improve both MCAS and dysautonomia.
Brain retraining has been really positive for my MCAS symptoms by the way.

Long COVID is sort of like the line in the Godfather 3. " Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" It's the same with long COVID. Just when you think you're getting better, you're not! Going on 2 years for me, and wearing on me, as I'm sure many others as well. Prayers to everyone.😢 ❤❤❤❤
