Jodhpurs: The Victorian Answer to Capri Pants || Summertime Historybounding
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 чер 2021
- Summertime Historybounding is made cute, easy and comfortable with a pair of historical capris inspired by a lovely steampunk pair, but with some historical sources to help guide the pattern making!
OK, so these pants span more than the Victorian era (or even just beyond England), but we all know that we gotta get that sweet SEO. And technically these are really even jodhpurs; as we will learn, they should more accurately be called "flared hip breeches"!
And for my first "collab" video, I've teamed up with Camille ofMother Hem Creations, so she can show you up she upsized the bloomer pattern I used as the base for my recreation, so be sure to go check out her video as well!
Hope you enjoyed the video, learned a thing or two, and will consider subscribing and coming back for more historical fashion, history bounding, and corgi cuteness!

I loved the Jodhpur history lesson at the start! It was also really interesting to see the difference between jodhpurs and regular breaches/riding breaches - I hadn't realised this before so that was also fascinating. Thanks for the pants-themed historic drafting content, it's both inspiring and educational 🥰👖
You’re very welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I figured I couldn’t be the only one interested in the history behind the garment
I LOVE THESE!! I dropped everything I was doing to watch this! I'm currently packing the car and then hoping to sit and film my voice over and intro and outro and I'll be ready to upload my video!
oooh, fantastic! I can't WAIT to see yours!
@@ShannonMakes for the future though I think I'm going to take a page from @bernadette banner and pre-write a script. It will also help me with figuring out scenes etc. This one was a bit rushed but not in a way that I'm unhappy with
COLONIZERBOUNDING! Wow. Yes. This is a word I needed.
These turned out so cute! The fabric has the perfect Flow-y movement. I don’t think anyone will mistake you for being pant-less! I love the crossover flap you created. It turned out perfect. Another project well done. Your Corgi girl is darling.
I can’t wait for the weather to go back to warm enough for me to wear these, but that’s going to be a while… the linen IS just so fun and drapey 😍😍 And yes, corgi is 💯
I loved Katos clothes, especially the jodphurs, but I could not afford them and during the time I did not sew. Perhaps I should give it a try 10 or so years later.
Love your version 😍
Miko says hi to Canelle he loves digging on a sandy beach too.
I think you should definitely give it a go now that you sew, they are well within your skill level, and would be a fun addition to your wardrobe!
I hope Miko's fur holds less sand than Cannelle's... she always come home a couple pounds heavier for it, and then I spend the rest of the day sweeping the floors!
@@ShannonMakes even if he has not dog fur but "hound fur", he manages to bring in loads of sand...
These are so beautiful! Love the summery footage, too 🌄.
Also, I am so using "coloniser-bounding". While I don't assume anything about what someone else is going for with which historical pieces they've chosen - outside the most extreme examples, anyway - there are definitely looks I avoid myself because they remind me too much of some seriously terrible things. In the past, I've struggled to express that properly, but you've summed it up perfectly, there ❤️.
One of my friends basically said, "well as long as you don't pair it with a white button-down and a pith helmet, you'll probably be OK" and I tend to agree, guys it's hard because I didn't want to make them in that color (for this exact reason), but it was the only suitable fabric I had 😐 So I'll just be careful what I pair it with! Glad you like the term!!
I’m definitely team pocket also. The background information you provide in each of your videos is so interesting and adds great dimension to your projects. Thank you for yet another interesting, informative and educational video.
Glad you like them! 🥰
Love the modifications and your explanation! The small scale patterning is genius!
Thanks so much Jeanette! I love working out ideas (roughly at least) in miniature... such a fabric saver XD
I'm sad Camille's video doesn't seem to be available. This is exactly the pant I'm looking for.
Yea, she never finished/released it 😢
These turned out super cute! Just the right amount of poofyness! I'm very excited about the collab too, I'll definitely check out Camille's video for some up-sizing tips! And Canelle is a cute little darling as always!
Aww thank you! And definitely go check out Camille's video (no link ATM because she hasn't posted hers yet, but will be updated in the description as soon as it is)!
Great design and the pants look very cute on you! Would also be great for Larp adventuring pants :)
Thank you 😊 (and also yes, agreed, great for LARPing!!)
I really love that front flap!
Thank you! It’s so funky and unique ☺️
I nearly spat out my drink at colonizer bounding. There's some song that was popular 15years ago, with the line 'in the Indian subcontinent' and we always used to say it sounds like an empire era explorationist.
LOL glad you enjoyed that line hehe :-P and yea, it's true, that line does give off "pith helmet wearing, artifact stealing, white man's burden "Her Majesty's Explorer" vibes
I am definitely going to be trying these out!!!
I've got some lightweight olive green wool that's just begging to become something like this! :D
Once again Canelle is a little, adorable, show stealer. You need to have words with her about that. ;)
Oh yes, definitely do try these (and I can vouch for the fact that olive green wool makes lovely bloomer-esque pants ;-) ). I have called Cannelle's people. We have an appointment scheduled for Wednesday next... :-)
@@ShannonMakes Her people are very good at keeping her in the spotlight, she is most adorable & difficult to ignore.
3:55 This man just did exactly what my 19-yo self did, after years of too short trousers (I'm very long) tucked into legwarmers ^^
Now I'm only wearing my jodhpur-like trousers, they're SO COMFY I can't imagine dealing with tight trousers around the bosom or thighs or crotch or knees, and they're SO PRACTICAL I love the tight feeling on the calves
Traditional jodhpurs had an almost semicircular flare from a few inches below the waistband to about halfway down the thigh, where they then closed in to a comfortable but not too roomy fit at the knee. Most were originally made in cavalry twill (very durable) and traditionally in a light beige colour.
🖤🧡🖤
Love love love!
Also giggled at the fact that you mini-scaled, as I was doing that just a couple of days ago!
Hahaha! That is one happy puppy!
It's such a practical way to think through some things without wasting as much time and material :-D Cannelle is happiest when fetching in the river, especially in the heat wave we've been having!
Wow. I just stumbled apon your channel, and I'm definitely staying! Honestly, you had me at #victoriantomboy. Thanks so so so much for both of this pant-videos! The steampunk ones have also been stalking my pinterest for years :D Now I'm diving into my fabric stash and find out if there's something suitable there to get started right now :)
Hello, and welcome! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment :-) I am so glad you enjoyed the video and please please do make a pair, and share photos with me if you can (maybe on IG? YT isn't so good for the photos)... Gotta take those Pinterest dreams and turn 'em into a reality!
I thought I was going to have to educate you about the real name for your Jodhpurs but I see we read the same information and you do know the difference between real jodhpurs and breeches or wide hip breeches. 👍🏼🙂
Turn out so adorable
Thank you!!
What a happy, dirty doggo at the end
The dirtier she is, the happier she is. She's very, very happy XD
Watching your process is so satisfying and inspiring! One day I shall make seams as crisp and clean as yours~
Thank you! Highly recommend an iron. Not even a crazy good one, most of mine are kinda scrappy and often found cheap or free, but just any iron will go a LONG way towards those crisp seamline!!
You are so talented in so many ways.
That is too kind of you, thank you so much
These turned out so nice. I also love the tiny ones 😁
Awww thank you! And the tiny ones make me giggle 😂
cant wait to make these as lol pj's
I've been watching all of your videos since you posted on the ofmd cosplay page, im currently hand stitching and omg thank you for getting me through it
You’re very welcome, I’m glad to keep you company (especially for the hand stitching, which I absolutely love)!! Please enjoy ☺️
(also…. whatcha working on?)
What a fun alteration!
Thank you!
I'm super grateful that you've made this video.
It's difficult to find videos about the sewing of the jodhurs, even was difficult to found how this type of pants are called 😖😖✨
🌿I will use your information for my cosplay of Diego Brando, thanks for your content
I'm glad you found the video and that it was helpful! I admit I had to look up Diego Brando, but it looks like it will be a very cool cosplay, and the pants should fit the bill quite nicely!
i think I'm going to make some for my band costuming! Littmus Steampunk Band! i have a long velvet jacket and i think jodphurs would work well underneath
I am in love with this pants.
They are both cute AND comfortable!
Lovely work!
Thank you so much 😀
It appears I am a slack bint, and haven't left you a comment on this video. I know I commented on IG about these because I remember the little pants patterns! These are so cute. I am going to have to play with the pattern and makes these, well maybe not quite so pouffy!
*goes off to Google "slack bint"*
This pattern (the base Bikes & Bloomers pattern, that is) is my go-to breeches/slacks/jodhpurs pattern, I love it (although of course it helps that it's basically already in my size, and I don't have to adjust it much)
This is peak Hobbit asthetic, and I'm here for it 👏👏👏 I think I have enough fabric that I could make a couple pairs of this, so I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend 😂 or, more realistically, next weekend...because I have to clean the sewing room first. 😅
It's like.... steampunk hobbit! I would maybe recommend laces on the ankle cuffs, or interfacing them, as my linen did stretch out and ended up a bit loose for my taste, so I need to go back and adjust them next summer!
@@ShannonMakes ooo that is a good idea. It also might be neat to quilt them with a heavy embroidery thread, similar to how Sashiko is made. That would hold some of the structure together, and it would be a way to add some ✨cozy pizzazz ✨ 🤔 time to get planning
I love these and yes! would love to make a pair!
Also wondering if you have made a video about, or with, info on working with stretch fabrics? I remember you said you have some experience with it.
Thank you! And no, I don't have anything about working with knits or lycras on the channel, and I don't even have any good recommendations either, sorry. Your guess is as good as mine in terms of what videos will help you 🫤
Lol, while the buttons are a little unfortunate, I’d probably just have sewn two extra pairs of buttons on just for decoration. You can never have too many buttons!!! :)))
These look great :)
Thank you, I'm glad you like them! Hope you enjoyed the video :-)
Omg. I need this
Im currently trying to make a set of hunting/hiking jodhpurs and decided to use a set of canvas pants i bought on eBay for them. My question is how would i go about splitting the outer seam and tapering down to the calf area from the slightly baggy thighs?. Also mine will be having about 8-10” of eyelets spaced at 1-1.5” and lacing for adjustment in sock thickness. Also very jnteresting video makes me wanna get a real sewing machine instead of doing everything by hand haha.
I mean, it's hard to answer your question precisely without knowing exactly how they were made, my guess is that they have double welt or flat felled seams on those main outer leg seams, and how you handle it will depend on how clean of a finish you want on the finished product.
The absolute cleanest would be to remove the waistband (at least for a couple inches along that seam) and to completely re-do that outer seam once you've trimmed it to your liking, but you might be able to get away with just seam ripping the bottom half or 2/3 of the seam, trimming it to your liking, and re-sewing it.
And re: sewing machine... it would definitely be easier on your hands to sew with machine than by hand on the canvas, but there's also a learning curve. Some people pick it up right away, but others can find it frustrating to make the switch, and the first few projects are "learning projects," so I'd just say to be aware of that, and accept that you might need some adjustment time (I love both machines and hand sewing, so I champion both!!)
Hello! I grabbed me a copy of "The International System of Garment Cutting, by J. P. Thorton", and "International System of Ladies' Garment Cutting, by J. P. Thorton" (which includes your riding pants pattern). I am still looking to find more books of this guy J. P. Thorton, some of his books are mentioned on the cover and at the back of the book.
I bought me some tent canvas 100% cotton 240g/m2 and 50/50% polyester/cotton 280g/m2. The 280g/m2 fabric is a bit too sturdy to make clothing with (i suppose), but the 100% cotton one is perfect for jackets and pants. Trying to copy a fostex cargo pants. Was looking on Pintrest and found me a really nice looking coat called a "Lady "Standard" Riding Skirt". Now im not a woman, but the pattern got me looking for the book it came out of. Its the 2nd book i mentioned.
I also uploaded a book called "Successful Sewing", its on my archive at the miscellaneous trades section.
I really dont know what to say, I like your sig sag sewing of the pockets. I thought i would need a serger/ locking machine for that job. I got me an ironing device the other day. That should make for some better looking fabric items.
Good luck!
Greetings,
Jeff
p.s.
If you cant find the real old pattern books, just let me know i will help you out.
Hi Jeff, thanks for the nice comment! It seems like you're well on your way to a sewing adventure, and I wish you the best of luck with your cargo pants!!
Great pants, at certain point looks a bit similar to a gaucho pants
These are so cute!! I was hoping to watch how Camille upsized the pattern (I’m plus size) but the link seems to be missing. Did she delete UA-cam?
I believe she's filmed it all, but that she hasn't finished editing it together (I know at one point she ran into computer issues)... But she's Mother Hem Creations on most platforms, so I encourage you to reach out to her and see where she's at. Maybe it'll give her the little extra boost she needs to finish editing!
@@ShannonMakes you’re the best!! Thanks for the info. I’ll hunt her down 🙃
These match your Corgi's "trousers" 😅
I would need extra reinforcement on the thighs lol. I’m hard on pants… to the point for the first time I’m seriously considering skirts. I have *so much* patching to do 😂 but they came out well, in spite of the…potentially problematic color. You could possibly add colored ribbon or some embroidery to help? Either way, thank you for sharing!
The bad news is that I suspect if you're hard on pants, you might be uncomfortable in skirts due to the phenomenon I lovingly call "chub rub" - this is why I wear biker shorts under ALL my skirts (I also like the shorts because I feel like, worst case, if I have to climb a tree or go upside down, I can always remove the skirt and remain decent 🤣🤣 but the chub rub is the main reason I will forever wear shorts under my skirts).
BUT extra reinforcement in the thighs is actually fairly common in things like riding breeches (which have almost exactly the same silhouette as jodphurs)!
@@ShannonMakes You guessed right! But a lady told me wearing a petticoat would actually help with that, and I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. Shorts and/or simply reinforcing all my lower garments would be the next step 😂
Any plans to create a sellable pattern of these? I'm far too new to sewing and pattern drafting to ever hope to make one of these in the next few years without a pattern to guide everything :c
Oh man, I wish I was talented enough to draft and grade patterns, but people go to school for literal years to learn how to do that properly, and I just don't have that skill set - not in a way that would make me feel comfortable offering a pattern that was inclusive to any sizes other than my own. So sorry :-( Maybe you can team up with a sewing buddy who can help you?
Perhaps I've missed something, but I'm highly curious about why jodhpurs are suddenly getting mentions in several sewing channels) It could be just a coincidence, but what if it's not? 🤔😄
Ooooh, who else is doing them!? I'm must be quite out of the loop, I had no idea!!
@@ShannonMakes Evelyn Wood said she was in the process of adjusting a pattern to fit her. Unfortunately, it's rather unlikely that she will make a dedicated video, because her channel is more oriented towards educating about sewing.
And the other mentions were simply offhand comments, so jodhpurs are on everyone's mind, but you are the first and only one to create a video about sewing a pair! 🥳
PS: a quick UA-cam search for "sew jodhpurs" gives an eccentric mix of britches, equestrian wear and Indian tailors😁
@@MsDeepAndDark Evelyn wants to sew a pair of those for over a year now, she's just super busy with her vintage sewing school
Can you add Camilla's video to the links in the description?
No, because she never made it
(wrtiting this before watching the whole video)
But can you ride horses in these?
I mean, I’d make them out of a sturdier fabric, secure the front flap with more closures, and probably extend the calf cuff a bit lower, and eliminate the buttons so they don’t rub annoyingly against the boot
(all that to say that yes, historically that’s one of the main things they’re meant for, but that on this specific pair I’d make some alterations if that was the main purpose)
@@ShannonMakes nice, thanks
let me know if you end up making a pair, especially if you end up making them for riding! The next video out (after my Hepburn Trousers) is drafting a pair of jodhpurs from a 1940 Tailoring Guide, so that might be of interest to you too!
