In this video, I share my design plans for renovating the bedroom of my 120-year-old Victorian duplex in Nova Scotia. I dive into my inspirations, limitations, and sources for materials, while using clips that didn't fit into the main video.
Initially inspired by Scandinavian design, we take a look at my time living in Denmark, my bedroom there, and look at how I aim to recreate the cozy, minimalist style I adore in my new home. I show how I use Milanote, an organizational tool, to gather my thoughts, images, and inspirations into a cohesive plan. The design approach includes warm wood tones, natural materials like jute and plants, and a clean white and bright green palette.
However, due to budget constraints and limited local resources, my final bedroom design took a shart U-turn and evolveed into a Scandinavian-inspired folk art style. I incorporated a thrifted duvet cover with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns as the centerpiece, and this broader color scheme allowed me to find matching thrifted items more easily.
I also share my plans to upcycle furniture, such as painting a dresser with Norwegian Rosemaling patterns (although time constraints prevented me from completing it before leaving for a work contract).

Once upon a time I was an Interior Designer, and I can tell you from experience that what you do with a central item as your theme is solid design practice: start with what you love and build your theme around that. Also, as soon as I saw both schematics you came up with for the bedroom, I thought to myself "Oh, yeah, that's new, modern, white and neutral Scandinavian design versus old, antique rosemaling, richly colored Scandinavian design," and then you referenced that later. 😄 How fun! I've done both in my own homes, but I have to say that the more richly colored antique style appeals to me far more than the white and neutrals with greenery I've done in the past. Can't wait to see the final results!

I love that you want to learn Rosemaling!!! It can be a bit of a challenge when first starting out, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite relaxing. Rosemaling came out of the Norwegian National Romantic period (1814-early 1900s). This was a time in Norwegian history where Norway was rediscovering its true Norwegian identity after having been a part of Denmark for nearly 400 years. Rosemaling has various kinds, depending on the part of the country it originates from. This is also around the same time that Norwegian Bunads were designed/created and many dresses will have embroidery that is very similar to what rosemaling looks like.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  3 місяці тому +13

Well I certainly wouldn't try to do *actual* rosemaling (thanks for the pronunciation), but just... something inspired by it. Something cozy and bright and handmade, but without worry about using traditional motifs!

We have something similar to Rosemaling in Sweden but here it's called 'kurbits' or 'kurbitsmålning'. I believe IKEA has played around with kurbits patterns for different textiles through the years.

It's really hard to choose between the 2 plans. I like parts of both plans. I would love to start with plan 2 and add elements from plan 1, especially the plants and warm wood tones. Looking forward to the next video.

@ShannonMakes The basic strokes of rosemaling are just Cs and Ss. The art uses these in many sizes over and over again to create flowers and designs that are both symmetrical and asymmetrical. It can be a simple design or quite intricate, depending on the skills of the artist. Give it a try!!

I'm a big fan of Plan B! The accent colors were called Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, and Burnt Orange when I was first starting out in the 70s and I've had them in my kitchen ever since (yes, I have Harvest Gold appliances). Since the colors have come in and out of fashion so many times (and under different names) I never have a problem finding accent pieces or replacements in the thrift store. They are such happy colors, I can't wait to see how the room turns out!

I loved your first decorative bedroom image but as a snow-loving, cold-embracing Maine woman, your second presentation introduces colors and textures that one can appreciate on a chilly winter evening. I have a bedroom with green walls and so love the contrast when everything is covered in brilliant white snow outside my windows, especially in the darker months. I change things up for spring ,summer and fall with pillow shams and sheets. It makes seasonal decorative changes easy, affordable and refreshing. Great job Shannon!

Love the bright color of the second option. White and neutral is like the "Sad Beige" trend. BORING, sterile, impersonal, giving off hospital waiting room vibes.
The duvet cover you thrifted looks like it was inspired by the Voynich Manuscript, and I LOVE it. Excellent color choices, as you could easily pivot to MCM. Mustard, burnt umber, rust, avocado green, etc. can be so flexible on interior design. Folk, MCM, Scandi; very adaptable for future decor refreshes.

The desings on the print also looks a lot Like german Bauernmalerei witch was really big in the 70. I remeber my aunt had a dresser done in that style. It was not difficult the flowers/petals where mostly done by placing different clours on the paintbrush and confidently „twirling“ it on the sureface. Tara!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  3 місяці тому +2

@@hiwakoo yea, that seems like something I'd try too... confidently twirling! There are lots of cultures with similar styles in their folk art traditions - Ukraine comes to mind, and we saw a lot in Romania as well. I think while the specific motifs differ from culture to culture, the general aesthetic resonates with many cultures!

As a former Costume Designer will worked with a variety of theatres she performance groups, 100% using a single (or very small collection) of inspirational pieces is industry practise. Most productions also have a 'design bible' which always starts with a colour and texture pallette, selected shapes/lines, and often a keyword list describing what the mood and focus is. It helps keep all that creative energy focused!

I NEVER follow trends. There has been a trend of everything Grey, not for me. I think picking something that you really like that you already own as a starting point is pretty normal. I have a beautiful green teapot and every time I saw it my heart would be happy. I went to the paint store, to look for the same color green paint I couldn't believe my eyes they had the same color. So I bought the paint and painted my kitchen that color. Decorating is so personal and is a place where people can create. I believe that you are going to make your home an extension of yourself. You are creative, and you will make your home a lovely place to go to, to relax after you are finished with your acrobatic tours and performances and it is time to go home to relax, regroup and get ready for the next performance tour.

I adore the history and good memories that come with thrifted decor, so plan B automatically gets my vote. Unless you found your first Ikea sheets thrifting or on deep discount, they would not feel as special to me. The thrill of the hunt for treasure and your creative upcycling vs off the shelf purchases is what keeps me excited to see whatever you're up to Shannon. 😻

It's all about the light for me. I love deep, rich colours but they suck all the light out of rooms and I NEED light. I have learned to use lighter colours on the walls, lots of mirrors, candles and lamps and use the colours and patterns that I love as accents.

I like B because it's new to me. The rich colors seem more luxurious and comfortable to me. But I am a baroque girl lol I love over the top fur and gilded massive dressers and beds. The Scandinavia style seems pretty to look out but too bright and stiff for sleeping and relaxing.

Well I can vouch for plan A being incredibly cozy for me personally (turn on some twinkle lights, light some candles and hunker down with a book, and those mushrooms, and it’s uber cozy in my experience), but plan B is a bit more “eclectic summer cottage in the woods”!!

A lot of decision making for me revolves around figuring out limitations to narrow down options, so picking an item to inform the rest of the design makes perfect sense to me. I think of your two designs I'd probably be somewhere in between. I love a vintage botanical piece of art but prefer more colors like the second.

I personally like the blue with the pops of color (second option) but, it’s because I’m vehemently opposed to white walls. I do think your personality comes out a ton in the first option though. I know both will make great options for you.

Hi, Shannon. I’m drawn to the Scandinavian style. I especially love the mushroom dresser. The Norwegian scenery reminds me of northern Ontario… so beautiful❤️ I wish you, Noah, and Cannel safe travels ❤️❤️❤️

That blue in the duvet I know as "steel blue" and it goes well with a dark cherry red. The colours you found are going to work well, but that blue can get overwhelming if used too much.
I prefer colours that are sleep inducing which are calming colours.
It's always fun to play around with colours and textures as long as there's a balance.
Now to see how you put these all together.

I do prefer the new one as the original one wasn’t that cozy to me. My bedroom I finally painted my dream color of pale pink I knew it would support all the art that I have (I have been told my place looks like a gallery but I don’t have all my art up!). This means my linens must be white, off white or very muted. People are always surprised when I got my dream sheets but they only came in white and I was fine with that. Really if I wasn’t I just would have dyed them. My bedroom needs major work so I can’t wait to see what you’ve done!

Hey Shannon try this site when you have the time I believe this maybe right up your alley he's an amazing artist with great wall idea's I've done a few of his techniques and they came out beautiful. I typically sit in my empty room with paper and pencil we've been renovating for 7 year's and we're so close to being done YEAHHHHHH have fun always looking forward to the next video. Happy designing from Tennessee many blessings

I would do both. I painted my bedroom a soft white, then change out the colors in Summer and Winter. The Scandinavian colors would be perfect for spring/summer. Then use those autumnal colors in fall and winter.

i definitely love both. the first one I swear I have elements of that already in my bedding and my wardrobe. but the second i love how it works with wood colors so well. i can't wait to see how this comes out, and i can't wait for the future video about remaking the mushroom dresser!

Wow, that certainly was a 180, but I can see that it suits you well and the colors you chose to go with the duvet cover are excellent. I'll look forward to the reveal - at the moment, I'm team A, but am open to the new plan. Besides, it's YOUR HOUSE!! And I'm sure you'll make it nice. In the past when moving, I always selected a room to become an 'oasis of sanity" in which to breathe. Clean, organized, tidy and finished enough for the moment. Now I'm deeply committed to never moving again, so long as I can manage it. Shannon, this house is indeed a massive amount of work for you but will be a showplace, I am certain.

I love your plan B. I'm of Norwegian back ground and grew up with many pieces of Rosemaling on the walls and tables. I inherited many pieces and gifted them to my grand daughter (unfortunately they were destroyed when a hurricane hit NJ a few yrs ago and they had been in storage). My mom did take a class in how to paint in the Rosemaling style and said it took too much patience for her so instead she got a stencil and decals. That can always be an option if you do want a real Rosemaling design.
I personally love color. Every room in my house has wonderful color. my main/front room is harvest gold. It goes so well with all the maple furniture. My kitchen/dining room is oatmeal to be a neutral background for all my shelves with jars filled with dry goods. Our bedroom is sapphire blue with crystal light fixtures (our birthstone colors of sapphire and diamond) with peacock blue, teal and gold.

True, true! To be fair, I am not interested in using actual rosemaling techniques or motifs, it's more the inspiration for the general aesthetic - trying to copy actual pieces or motifs sounds stressful and potentially offensive (I don't know the cultural significance behind it), so I'd rather just play around and do my own loose interpretation of it... bonus points if it takes less patience 🤣🤣

Very enjoyable chat! The white-and-green is very appealing on screen, but I suspect it might be hard to keep looking that sparkling (I've got beige and green and some areas are just trashed by the cat. White would be so much worse). The folk art/rosemaling aesthetic is more unusual and affords lots and lots of avenues for future decor projects.

I like both styles, but lean more towards your folklore style, I just love all the color. Maybe you could do your original idea in one of the other rooms down the road. I love that dresser. I really like the 1st design plan, it's fresh & bright. The back up plan will work, everything came together nicely. You can keep watching for the original bedding, you might run across it later on and can always change it. I was cheering for the mushroom dresser. Looking forward to seeing it all come together, next week.

I was thinking with the first design that pink accents might not be a hit with your fella but the second rich colour palette is ideal for couples and personally I prefer it, feels cosy to me. You have a done a great job of coordinating the colours btw. Those curtains have one great feature to them, well a few really, but that fabric will drape really nicely. You know, if that green paint isn't just right, you can bring it to the paint store and ask them to add some white or light grey or whatever to bring it closer to something that works in that room. Looking forward to seeing you pull it all together 🙂
