I'm disabled and have had an electric scooter for eighteen months and has given me some mobility back that I lost ten years ago. I will fight anybody who tells me I cannot use one.

What it still boils down too is the government see it as a money maker if people have there own then no money to be made.at the end of the day nick people who are being stupid just the same as the cops would with cars.there is no diff between a rented one and an owned one.both need trust in the user on how they behave.being rented will not change that.
You hit the nail on the head with your first opening comment, the UK government is only out for their self and if they can't make money out of it they are not interested.

im young and im obsessed with E scooters, but i know when im older id want a more relaxed ride, because standing up kills the feet, ankles, knees and wrists after even a few miles.

I’m 58 and my scooter is a blessing. I don’t drive but the scooter has given me so much more free time and freedom.
I was disappointed to read the instructions said age 16-50. Made me laugh like a motorbike should have an upper age limit too then.... It's not to be taken seriously but understand the highlighting.
I think these machines have the potential to be a great zero carbon transport type. Just need the government to set some standards and rules. Ride safe mate. 🛴

In Ireland we are limited to 25km/h and escooters are treated as bicycles. Priority is to use bike lanes, using roads if walkpath is very busy and use walkpath if road is very busy. Simple and make sense.

I'm 70 an I've had a Xiaomi M365 Pro for 2 years now. I wouldn't be without it. Had a puncture last year during the first lockdown and had to get it fixed immediately. I felt lost without it.
I can't use it to commute (too far), but I use it all the time locally, weather permitting.
Never been stopped by the police.
Don't care about the legality.
It's a no-brainer.
That's amazing, I seen a guy in another channel who said he picked up one at 58 and some people were bugging him about it, but you're showing them just by doing what you're doing. Too bad I can't show him your comment, I'm sure he would have appreciated it. He had some good support too though so it's not all bad.

That’s good glad you’ve not been stopped but it’s okay for you your an adult police are gonna stop younger people who may use e scooters legitimately like going to work like my self on my scooter and still be stopped because police know they have more power over a younger person but then admittedly there are young people wrecking it for loads of people selling drugs on them causing police chase and that so far I’ve been lucky I have a Chaos GT1600 Sport 48v Lithium Hub Drive and I love it has its own key, a display at front tells me my speed how much battery is left, how many miles I’ve done tells me what setting I have it in from 1 slowest to 3 fastest has a seat a horn a light and everything I love it and it’s saved so much time going to work but I think the government need to sort it out ASPA and make it fair for all ages like I’ve said before if your driving it unsafe like a dick head selling drugs on it causing trouble and so on then it should be taken off you but if your just commuting on it and you have a full license or provisional then you should be able to go about your business commuting and not have any bother.
I'm 55, i use mine for work and cops past me and nothing yet. Will carry on using it.

I'm a cyclist and E-Scooter users are just like cyclist, most know what they're doing but there are some idiots who don't know what they're doing or don't care. We need to figure out how to regulate both honestly.

For real the UK is always 10 years behind. They don’t see the potential. They only see it as a threat. If people use e-scooters, then less people will use buses, trains, hire bicycles/scooters then how will they make money? They always publish the negatives and how dangerous these are. The UK needs to learn how to adapt. I wish we could be less stuck in the times and look at how other countries are implementing e-scooters in a safe manner. 🙄

I live 4 km from work in Brussels. It's a 50 min walk (I did walk once) or 20-40 min car journey depending on traffic. I've owned a private scooter for 1 year now. I get to work in 20 mins flat and just fold the scooter and carry it into the office. I use it for all sorts of local trips to the shops. I drop my family by car when we go to friends, but then return on the scooter so I can drink and the scooter fits in the taxi home. I can't imagine life without it. There are always idiots who need to learn what's acceptable and what's not. Most people ride sensibly. I hope UK politicians can see the light and pass legislation soon.
She hit the nail on the head.. this was my thought on why they don't want... no money to be made.. more scooters in cities less money authorities & government make... no fuel tax..road tax.. no parking charges.. no parking tickets... no need for public transport no need to fill up your car just sit in a traffic jam burning fuel... more you burn more tax government make..
It's alot deeper than that and not so sinister. There's many cities in the UK that are so polluted with regular built up traffic. That costs alot of money for drivers and council. There's fines and more problems for high emissions in city areas, emissions charges for drivers and the council and alsos fines for your country all tied to European emissions regs. Not only that but people moving out of London due travel times or congestion charges and fuel costs etc etc hits the pockets of the local council and the same goes in other cities. Scooters keep people Close and more Importantly in the shops and renting locally etc etc. I've noticed myself stopping at coffee shops and sitting down and having five minutes at a cafe that normally in my car I would pass by and not blink. However there are downsides for the scooter rider long term and that's health. I've barely walked since owning my scooter, getting about town is a little slower than the car (but not much) it's alot cheaper and I can get places my car can't. So walking has almost Become redundant other when I'm at work.
The UK has to pay alot of fines and taxes based on pollution levels that's are Co fined to only a handful of town and cities in the UK. The government would welcome less cars in those places. That's the reason for parking fines ans congestion charges. Without them the roads would be filled tenfold. If it was about making money they wouldn't care. Scooters will Soon be legal from what I'm hearing. Early next year Is what I've read.
So the government dictate which scooters you can have. How about this.... Everyone has to dump their cars and have a government rental Trebant on a long term lease.

@@thistimeimhere well the car rental thing is more economic pressure than government IMHO. Cars are expensive and nobody has any money, and these leasing services are everywhere and get you into a new car for less monthly cost (ignoring the fact that you're throwing your money away...). Businesses figure out it's better for their bottom line... after having you cover the depreciation on the vehicle for a few years, they can then just sell it on to someone else... ugh...
The government wants everyone to give up on petrol /diesel cars and go electric yet won't allow for private owned electric scooter to be used as a mode of transport unless rented ?? Have I got that right cos if I have it sounds loony ?

I can’t walk very well but do not want a mobility scooter. I’d like an e-scooter to help me be more mobile. Pity they can’t be classed also as a mobility aid.

e scooter, they dont bother me, its gave me a new lease in life, if you sensible do you really think any copper going to nick a disabled person on a scooter, just tell them you can't walk and they will have to get you ambulance or carry you
The completely daft thing with mobility scooters is you do not have to prove to some shops that you have any disability to purchase one and once you have one you are allowed to take it inside shops drive on pavements etc. Yet our government will not legalize private ownership of an e-scooter. If anything an e-scooter could be used more effectively as a mobility aid and it can be stored away much more easily

Wasn't a fan when they first came out, then I had a go on one. As a kid born in the 70s the thought I can jump on something this small with a 15 mile range would have been mind blowing, it's almost upnthere with the fabled hoverboard dream lol.
I can’t wait till the day I can ride my own privately owned e scooter legally in the UK I own one already and haven’t been caught YET! But I’m looking forward to not having to worry or having to look over my shoulder every 2 mins

In Birmingham they don’t care. The unofficial position is to turn a blind eye unless you’re doing something really stupid. I even had one tell me that’d he’d love to have a go one but declined my offer to try mine out, said it wouldn’t be appropriate.
I pass plenty of police, as well as my friend who has a Kaabo Wolf Warrior which goes 50mph+, none of them even care to look at us anymore.

I have a wolf warrior I approached a red traffic light and a police van was stopped next to me. Didn't bat an eye. As long as you don't take the piss by speeding and riding recklessly then they won't talk to you. Additionally I had a helmet and gloves on so they had the idea I was a safe rider.
People who actually own scooters and use them for specific purposes, WILL take care of them. Especially when they're 700$ and up.. Rental scooters are the equivalent to shopping carts. They aren't going to be taken care of and will be treated as such. Just another way for the Govt to keeps people's money. I feel bad for people in the UK.
I'm in New York... scooters illegal here too. But a lot of people are seen riding them. Including me. It's our country, and governments wages paid from our taxes. WTF?
If you knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't spout such rubbish. Rental scooters are maintained by the companies running the individual schemes. The government aren't making money from this, quite the opposite. It's just a stop gap until the old laws are changed to accommodate electric scooters, in line with e-bikes etc. When that is done, anybody can then buy and use one on public roads etc. Until then, they currently require insurance and specific technical features to be road legal.

Your taxes help pay for many things, a small part of which is wages for the people who actually setup, organise and deliver the services and facilities you take for granted. @@sirgaymeerkat1994 unless the bike has been made illegal you cant go on electric power alone at all, you must pedal as well, when you get to 15.5mph the electric motor cuts off. You can go as fast as you can pedal it but the electric motor is making no contribution when you exceed 15.5mph its just a bike like any other at that point. I have had mine going at more than 30 down a steep hill, no pedaling and no motor its just gravity. Anything with wheels will go fast down a steep hill even a scooter. Its nice to have chunky disk brakes though, do you get them on scooters?
@@philspencelayh5464 yes! you can get disk breaks! my point is it shouldn't be illegal unless you can go faster than 25 and over a certain amount of horse power like it is with mopeds! the law is stupid and only has been put there to give a monopoly for the scooter higher companies.

We have a trial scheme in our area and the only ones I have seen are being ridden on the footpath even when there is a cycle track right beside them, There are a rising number of illegal ones too and they stick to the footpaths as well. They cannot be allowed to mix with pedestrians, because the pedestrians are not looking out for what is effectively a very quiet motorbike in amongst them. They should be allowed by law and like any other motor vehicle they should be taxed and insured and mot ed and only driven on the road by licenced users who have passed a driving test.

I am 71 and ride my e-scooter regularly. No real problems apart from the odd cop about to say something on the street..but I don't stop. Ride in parks..costal paths...cycle lanes..not often on the pavement. Just ride sensibly and not too fast in busy areas. They are great localised personal transport for exploring on

I live in Germany and my E-Scooter really changed my life. I owned it for about 7 months now and I replaced all of my previously car-driven routes with this scooter. Even in the winter when it’s cold and there’s some snow I can drive just fine (maybe a little bit slower because it’s slippery on snow). Now in spring I plan to get rid of my car entirely and forever. Main reasons are that the scooter is way more climate friendly than a car, that the scooter is way cheaper, more fun and independent (I charge it completely off of my solar system). I‘m not a fan of the car-centric traffic system and that scooter helps me hating cars even more 😅.
I’m massively in favour of scooters but driving a large van around London, it’s a bloody nightmare. Some clearly have a death wish with 3+tons of metal!
Licence plate, cbt training and mandatory helmet is a minimum imho.
No one thinks about the mental state of a vehicle owner that has injured someone, regardless of fault!

@@chronometer9931 yeah, i get that BUT that’s not what i’m talking about. There’s wilful disregard or respect from these extremely vulnerable riders zipping around 1, 2 tons and larger vehicle’s. So common to see these blissfully unaware idiots jumping into braking zones created by the driver. You may say , that’s their choice but what about the driver who now has reduced brake zone and could crush them as a result. They also have to live with killing someone regardless of whose choice it is. I’d let it go if it were an isolated issue but it’s the norm in London now. It’s a real problem that needs regulations and recourse if the worst were to happen.
Paul. I agree, a lot of people use these with no regard for their safety. It's the same with mobility carts and bicycles. There are those who think they have every right to ignore the "rules of the road" or just dont know them putting themselves at risk of serious injury or death and the only person who will have the finger of blame pointed at them will be the driver of the vehicle that has run them over. Clear regulations to make it safe for all is the only way to go.
Renting an escooter is just greed for money the law should give the freedom to everyone the choices. 🙃
Trouble is we have narrow footways in uk, not enough cycle lanes, and have KIDS racing around where pedestrians walk,, same issue with bicycles mind, kids do just 'drop where they stop' they don't put them saftetly against a wall or fence, if you have 10 youngsters out for a ride to go into shop they drop them all over the walkway.
Wow, this video has been very enlightening for me… I live in the US (Florida)… and I just purchased a scooter that goes 60mph. I didn’t have to ask the government, I share the roads with cars safely. I slow down and share the sidewalk (pavement) with pedestrians. It all works out great. This makes me even more nervous for our old man pro-government President…. There should be no law against riding e-scooters in public, but there should be a law for misusing them in public. You don't have to punish the innocent for riding sensibly only the guilty for misusing them. Most people do not know the true definition of what a CRIME actually is going by Law and not by Acts & Statutes.
I support the use of these scooters but here in Hartlepool I've noticed people are riding them with dark clothing on. I feel they should wear hi vis. To be honest it's the same for bicycles. 😎

We can go ahead with your plan once we pass the law that forces you to wear a clown suit when you go out in public, because we "feel" like that's an equal trade off. While we are at it, let's take away your right to drink coffee and assign you a government mandated exercise regimen as well.
Elscooters belong on pavement, it's as easy as that.. Together with bikes, yes I said it.. There should be no right to cycle as fast as you want.. Impost speed limites on pavement and make cyclcunts slow the fuck down.
Here where I live many of them act like they're training to, or are doing Tour de France. And why the hell do we accept PUBLIC roads being closed for PRIVATE events? Make them make their own fucking track! Roads are for the public, not for bicycle races.

I love mine but I see police at least 2 or 3 times when I’m riding. I been riding for a month. In edge of road, mainly side streets no faster then 14mph and I get scared every time I see police. I’d be gutted for them to take my scooter away

hi mate. I understand your worries, I feel the same. Well, I now have 2 e scooters, 1st I rode everyday for around a month, about 140miles. I pass police around 3 times per ride, mainly because I live near a busy main road and I have to use said road to get to nice quiet streets and police are flying up and down constantly. I’ve not been stopped. I’ve been at traffic lights, police on other side, we both at front and they looking at me and they just ride on. That’s happened a good few times now. Recently, I took scooter to local store at 4am to get some bits and guess who is sitting directly outside shop, yep police. I was tempted to just ride on but I acted normal, went in shop with scooter, came out and they was gone. Yeh, I feel ya about your comment, regarding if/when police will be instructed to stop every e scooter rider they see and warn, fine or take scooter. I mainly use my scooters for pleasure rides, going shopping, post office, takeaway etc I don’t use for work. I would if it was local but fuck going 10plus miles on an e scooter with our shit roads and inconsiderate car/van/bus drivers. Here’s my advice.
1. Buy an e scooter if you think you’ll get a fair amount of use from it and poss try a friends first.
2. Remember it may get taken away so if money is tight, don’t go out buying a 2 grand scooter that you can’t afford to lose.
3. My first scooter cost under £300 and if your anxious, it may be best to buy a cheaper 1 and if it gets taken it’s not a huge lose . For me I said if I can get a year use from my £270 scooter and then police take, I wouldn’t be too bothered as i had a year of fun with it.
3. If your in love with an expensive fast scooter and have to have it, do not ride along at 30mph+ or police will deff have you, wear helmet and try not to ride on pavement.
4. If you do buy 1 try not to worry. Easier said then done but if your too full of fear, you’ll hardly ride it and not have fun.
5. Do a little research so you buy the right scooter for you.
You know the laws and I’m not going to say go for it or not. That’s up to you. 1 more important bit of advice. Try and get air filled tyres and suspension is a bonus. My first scooter has hard tyres no suspension and is a rough ride on anything other then smooth tarmac. My 2nd scooter was £140 more then 1st, it has 10inch air filled tyres suspension on front and back and goes a fair bit faster, has bight led lights, key ignition , more range etc . If you have any questions or want any advice about a certain scooter, feel free to give me a shout 👍

I would use it for commuting through north London. Thanks again for writing that I feel a lot better about it now.
We have rental scooters in my city and I see them parked around downtown and the U. I live in a medium size city so they're really not a problem so far. Plus, they're handy in the neighborhood areas for those who need to go to the corner stores, especially if they have a handicap.
I’ve ordered an 800 watt scooter with seat which may do 25mph, but I’m sensible and will use this sensibly in the cycle lanes here in south Manchester. I am too old (late 60s) to use a pedal bike and can’t wait to use this instead of using the car for my shopping.
Update, after several weeks of riding this, it has been great fun to ride, however I have now replaced it with an e bike so as not to get into trouble with the police.
It still baffles me that some people justify riding a 1.5ton(thanks Steve) vehicle that kills thousands per year to haul a 75kg human for 5 miles back and forth.
@Harrrive I consistently see people who drives to the speed limit to save time in their commute but take 30mins to park their car.

I do all journeys of less than about 20 miles on my bike now and have done since covid appeared but it would be great to have the option to use a scooter for some of them, especially when going to an area risky for theft as a scooter can be taken inside a workplace for example.
Hello, People who own there scooter will look after them, and not be left on the street to block the way, We could pay £50 a year for insurance and have a number plate ,fine people if they go mad , wear crash hat , hi vis things , stick to cycle lanes , or the road as we paid £50, keep to 15 mph if you want to go faster get a moped , if it raining a lot scooters wont come out , ( have a person with a red flag in front ) thank you xx
Back in the day, you were not allowed to buy your own landline phone, or even connect your own gas cooker. After which it was all allowed. For gas cookers, I think you still have to have a safety certificate.
2 years later and they are still illegal unless part of a trial. But I still see them being used in my town.
Edit: 2024 and still no sight of legislation. Rental trials extended until 2026. So in the meantime escooter riders ride responsibly with consideration for others if you are going to ride them and the police don’t catch you.
So happy to be in Seattle. Nobody hassles the scooter riders here. Speed limit in the city of 30mph but the cops have more on their plate than scooters.

Dallas TX had "rental bikes" - like 5 companies came in and they were laying all over town. Then they started licensing them and they all ended up in the scrapyard. Then e-scooters came and the same thing happened. Half the companies pulled out and last time I looked I did not see a single e-scooter anywhere. No idea how many landfills THAT created.
I’m autistic; my EUC is the only thing that gets me out of the house and talking to people. It has been truly life changing. I spend more time suffering from anxiety that I will have it taken off me, than I do enjoying it. It’s really awful :(

@@adgooch7106 it’s an EUC rather than a scooter. Already looked into setting up a company and renting it to myself. Have taken out 3rd party electric bike cover as it’s all I can do (I believe the government are acting illegally by permitting long term hire and not permitting purchase). I used to cycle 150 miles a week to clear my head, but my knee is incredibly bad. This is the way I can ride my old routes and get out by myself. Thanks for the support :)

Well they got me. I don’t want to say a lot at the moment but I was stopped on the edge of town away from major traffic/pedestrian areas. 15 months/over 2000 miles on the clock and no accidents. I won’t lie, I’ve had a few close scrapes but I’ve learnt from all of them. I’ll be back.

I'm approaching 60 and use my EUC (an electric unicycle) for most of my local travel. The government is banning the sale of petrol vehicles in 2030 but hasn't proposed any affordable alternatives - I sadly can't afford a Tesla. My EUC has a range of about 50 miles and costs about 15 pence to "fill up". I don't worry about it getting stolen as I just walk into shops with it and people just assume it's futuristic luggage. If I lived in a small apartment then it would be an ideal form of transport that I could just keep by my front door. So have the government embraced it? Nope, they made them illegal along with escooters.

@@gav-ce5cm Mine's a Gotway Nikola Plus. London traffic can be quite unforgiving so I wanted a wheel that could move at the same speed as the cars. I avoid any roads faster than 30mph though. I've been happy with the wheel so far though I do think the rear light could be much improved.

The country has a time limit to reduce its e-footprint to a certain standard, what better way than more electrical transport.

I have a private one had it for about 3 plus years. I am not using it since all the fuss. Its the future, not just for cities its for towns and villages too. Should also be for shared paths, mine hardly goes very fast just a great way of getting from A to B and better for the environment. Cycle/ scooter lanes need to be everywhere now. Less cars on the road the better.

Cars and E scooters share the same benefits / problems namely the attitude of the person using it . The main difference is that the E scooter has a far more likelyhood of coming into contact ( literally ) with pedestrians due to where it can be taken . You can educate the majority but legislation and penalties will need to be required for the minority first.
Completely agree, saw a mclaren super car earlier which goes 200mph yet the speed limit is 70mph 🤷♀️ if the driver is reckless and breaks speed limit, drives it dangerously it’s unsafe , if they aren’t reckless and stick to the rules it’s safe. Pretty simple 👍🏻

Just because you are driving at, or under the speed limit, does not mean you are automatically safe. Nor does going over the speed limit automatically make it unsafe, just illegal. Driving/riding to suit the conditions is the real key.
I keep hearing these arguments about people getting hit by e scooters, but the reality is that this is extremely rare. most scooters aren't really any more dangerous to you than someone peddling a bike really fast or going down a hill. The vast majority of scooter instances are cars hitting scooters. Even people on the sidewalk are in extremely low danger here, but people need to be more respectful of others around them and not block the paths so people have room to pass. What you're advocating is actually more dangerous. you want to put a 100 pound or less toy in with 1+ ton crushing machines.. Do people who ride scooters lives not matter?
@@chronometer9931 The vast majority of vehicle to vehicle collisions are the faster vehicle hitting the slower one, but that doesn't mean it's the faster or the slower vehicle at fault. Pedestrians have been killed by impacts with cyclists, and skaters. If you're hit and killed it is irrelevant that you're a rare statistic, you're still just as dead. As a pedestrian I feel less safe every day sharing the pavement with higher speed wheeled transport, we need some sort of physical barrier to separate us from all the cyclists and scooters. I won't even walk to the local store any more because the pavements aren't safe for pedestrians, instead I'm forced to drive there causing more pollution and more congestion.
The difference is a car kills pedestrians. Scooters/bike wrecks rarely ends in fatalities. Scooters/bikes are much safer and should have priority over cars.
I haven't ridden a rental scooter, the closest I rode to a rental scooter is the Apollo Air which has a max power of 250 watts with a max speed of around 25km/hr, while the power is limited but it is still illegal in term of speed. But I never feel it offers that feeling of safety, comfort, and handling of much bigger scooters. I first ever scooter is a Kaabo mantis V2, it is faster, and more powerful but once I could control it, it felt much safer with great brakes, great acceleration, and superb handling, riding downhill I never had the feeling that the brake on this scooter would fail me, I just don't have the same feel on Apollo Air. I got the Air only because it was given for free with the purchase of the Phantom scooter, it was much lighter and probably something I can take onto a tram and bus.
They don't want to legalise private e scooters in London because TfL are scared that they will see a dramatic drop in profit, every one could just use e scooters to get around and not have to deal with paying for train journeys. TfL are already nitpicking on their own staff and services due to covid, fining their employees for failing audits. Imagine if 50% of their customers don't use their services anymore due to these e scooters.
If everyone just used bicycles and not took public transport, I'm sure they will be itching to ban bicycles too.

Personally, as with everything that involves the legislative process, I would strongly advise caution against pushing for whichever (greener) mandate by whomever resides in No.10, especially when in lockstep with avant-garde tech and consequent policy.
Time, time, time; must be taken especially for something which has the potential to change the very way our neighborhoods and cities interact and operate.
Trial and derive (from case law) instead of retrospective accession, and devolve the final say to individual councils/boroughs/(combined) local authorities on whether to let the shiny new zippers in to their local backyard.

@@robertstallard7836 so these schemes are a stop gap? Better than nothing I suppose.. My thought was to trial an 'equivalent-status to bicycles law' for a set period to monitor the effects. What might be interesting is to see whether a successful integration of e-scooters and bicycles might lead to a relaxing of pedal assisted e-bike regs to allow for assisted coasting. Last time I looked I think such a feature was not allowed.

A lot will depend on how responsible people are with them. Bicycles being ridden on the pavements is a big problem already, and if riders are tempted to do the same with e-scooters (or leave them scattered about on the pavement outside shops etc.) then they'll be less likely to be exempted as they'll just add to the problem.
Nanny state control, I am 54 yes old and have chronic leg and foot pain due athritis, I bought an e scooter and it has changed my life for the better, I couldn't be without it now, I sold my car and if I need one I,ll rent one but e scooters really are the way forward for cheap personal mobility, you just know they are planning a way to make money from them. Personally I wouldnt mind paying something for up keep of the roads but that is a joke too. They need to get the finger out and legalise these fantastic machines asap.

I’m a 58 year old with a killer scooter, it’s great. Have never fallen off because I practice common sense. I take it on holidays, saves me so much fuel. I love them and would buy more in the future. @Peter Hicks You don't have to believe me, Peter, but I think you're missing the point that the whole idea behind the present trial period is so that e-scooters can be granted the same exemption as electrically-assisted pedal cycles. The same argument you have made could also be made for them, but the government still exempted them from the need for insurance.
The trial is going to have to go on for a bit longer because much of it has coincided with the onset of covid and much-reduced traffic density. Once that returns to normal, the trail will then show whether e-scooters can indeed be exempted. Much depends on the riders and the way they use them. If they ride them all over the pavement and leave them outside shops causing an obstruction, then there is less likelihood of that happening.
If you look up the legislation behind the trials, you'll see thatv the aim is, indeed, to get them exempted (or, at least, those up to a certain power and speed etc.).
@Peter Hicks You got that right, even electric cars scare the government shitless, I remember reading a couple years back about how they wanted to start taxing electric cars in some countries, including mine. The justification, is that electric cars don't have to pay for gas and thus don't have to pay the gas tax. @@robertstallard7836 Did you think they were going to tell you something you didn't want to hear? If they make escooters exempt that's great, but you're completely ignoring how things actually work. They tell us what they think we want to hear, they hold their trials and then decide if they can get away with it or not. If the gov doesn't determine that they can actually pull off forcing regulations then it will get banned, unless they think they can't ban them, then it would become exempt like electrically-assisted pedal cycles. The gov simply determined that they couldn't pull it off with electrically-assisted pedal cycles, because they are too similar to bikes(in the peoples eyes) and they also couldn't ban it, that's how it ended up exempt. The difference here is that some people don't equate scooters like that, but think they are like cars and that perception is likely what they are trying to gauge right now.
It would actually be more accurate to say the gov first determines if they can ban it or not. It's when people refuse to follow those laws that the govs hand is forced, that's when they start to look into replacing lost or future lost income as it's no longer a choice.

Hi. I own my own e scooter have done for a while now. I love it but do feel a bit paranoid when riding it. I consider my self a very safe rider cos I wear a helmet a high viz & I slow down 4 people & I move out the way of people. Stop at road crossings. I basically move out the way of every1 & everything. But I do get some funny looks off some people. But I love it & I feel I'm also doing my bit 4 the environment. Not 2 mention saving me money. Just wish the government would hurry up & approve them 👍

I feel like the loophole is the acquiescence to bad driving and thus road safety. It seems like a policy decision but driving standards aren’t going to improve if you crackdown on electric transport.
Our family recently fell in love with escooters in Spain, using the Hopp service which seemed to co-exist well with private ownership. Hope this can happen in the UK soon.

How is it greener? All these do is displace the emissions to the national grid who get most of their power from burning coal. And the damage done to the environment mining the materials for the batteries is it ok that its damaging 3rd world countries and not ours. not to mention the batteries have a lifetime of around 7 ish years so more mining is required
@@vector198 The National Grid isn't the problem of the user and is easily solved with Nuclear, anyone who claims to be pro-environment and yet is anti-nuclear is a hypocrite. As for the materials, I'll point out first that it's the third world making the most use out of these vehicles, look how many are used in China for example. We can't end 100% of mining, that's simply not possible. We do need better batteries and we do need to make better use of the resources we have. We may be able to use use hydrogen tech in the future combined with nuclear. That would work for larger vehicles, but I don't know if the tech can be made small enough to work for scooters.

But if its for conscientious reasons about the environment then having the fumes coming out of a powerstations chimney instead of your exhaust. As it is right now the majority of power is created in stations that burn fossil fuels so the environment is being polited either way. and i agree that nuclear power is better for the environment in some sences but it has its own drawbacks with what to do with the waste? My point was these electric vehicles arent all theyre cracked up to be.

@@TheLondonCyclist I was driving M365 Pro, then Zero 9.And now I am with an Inokim OX. It's my main and only transport in the city and I am driving mainly on the streets. Might be expensive, but it's safe and practical if you go for a bigger, faster and better build scooter. I know that the good scooters are quite expensive still, but there is second hand options aswell.

Not against the rules it's against the law (a very different thing) disabled vehicles are the ONLY vehicles permitted to drive on the pavement or pedestrian areas and that includes bicycles of any sort including children .. but mostly the police would not enforce a child to ride on the road ,although I heard of one such incident with a child and parent on the way to school who was stopped
Just buy your own, I've had mine for about 6 months now and have never been stopped, police have driven by countless times I've been riding. Depends where you live I guess but in most places I think the cops have bigger issues. The biggest threat to e scooters currently are thieves, you've gotta be careful someone doesn't try and steal it off you

Here in the UK we can pass our driving test at 17 and jump straight in a 200mph super car if we wanted, but we can't ride a 15mph scooter/ebike legally on the road above 250w.
Now you tell me who would be the most dangerous, the new driver in a supercar or someone on a gps speed limited no matter what power e bike/scooter, we even allow 16 year olds on 50cc mopeds after the pass a basic(and I do mean basic) test, I've held a full clean driving license for 22 years, not one accident in that time, but I can't ride a ebike over 250w legally, if it's "all about safety" then lets use the same test for mopeds, a basic safety test every 2 years and we get a gps speed limited bike with whatever power we want

I've just brought 3 segway G30's. This so we can use them on weekends away with the camper but also so I can commute to work. There is no rental companies available in Devon. Are there any updates on the law change?

I just sold my car and want a e scooter for freedom locally, my breathing is bad and a scooter would be more acceptable than a 4 wheeled mobility “scooter” Here in Leeds it is still a no no but I see many people using them. It is absurd the way things stand.
