@@jakedonnely4094 It's really not that much better than what I get from my Engwe Engine X. I can do up to 40 miles on a single charge, but I'm going 17 mph on it most of the time. She was only doing 7 mph on average.

Still, impressive range, certainly better than my bike (new). My range is set to 120 km in ECO, I'll estimate around 100 km in ECO on a good day. So 127 km, IRL range is very impressive indeed.

127 km?!? On an e-bike? I NEVER thought I would see the day! Comparing the capabilities of this to what was available when the channel start, just a short 4 years ago, is mind boggling. The rate of improvements in battery technology is awe-inspiring. I am shooketh, in all the best of ways. And way to go Eilis!! It's amazing isn't it. My wife has an emtb with a Bosch motor and she always gets over 120km from every charge. Obviously she doesn't use it on full power, but enough to able her to ride big rides with me. My mate also has a shimano in a Merida big tour, and he gets about the same distance in the middle support mode. Batteries are 625w/630w. Im always amazed at how far they can go.

I think they are used to hikers and bikers regularly making their way through their space. I used to farm too and cattle become accustomed to strangers when they regularly encounter them.
Also having a radio playing in the milking parlour or sheds makes them much more relaxed when strangers enter their space.
Talk to any vet and they will tell you that cattle that are not handled regularly or used to strangers can be very nervous and stressed and dangerous to be handled for treatment or testing.

I’ve learned a lot on this channel, not just about electric bikes, but about places, tech, chocolate fudge… Eilís is a gem 💎, and the rest of the team is also very watchable. I’d love to see more material (a bit like @fullycharged) but I understand that the team has day jobs too and logistical limitations (for example, testing cars is a non-runner because they don’t have secure parking).
But yes, I no longer have an e-bike, I want one because the one with most toys wins … but I don’t believe the north of England offers a suitable weather.

Wow that's quite the challenge! Well done, an 80 mile ride is a long way. The wrong saddle or position can wipe you out over that kind of range. Even 20 miles on the wrong saddle or bike can do you in easily. Like a lot of things, long distance biking takes a while to learn and dial in. I'm very impressed!!!! It seems to me that a lot of things can affect range, going up hill, riding into the wind, gravel/dirt or other road conditions, some kind of friction on the wheels, i.e. brakes rubbing just a little, a wheel being out of true, tire pressure,... I focus a lot on the ease of wheel rotation on my bikes, I can rotate my wheels with a feather and they love to roll and roll and roll.

You can't ride an electric moped like you can a bicycle, its far heavier, generally has foot pegs instead of pedals (unless your moped was built pre 1977) and much higher top speeds. An electric moped also needs to be registered and insured as well as taxed.

She didn't drive in eco mode, she took lots of terrain and 1500 ft elevation. Yeah, in ideal circumstances the double seems reasonable. Also, don't forget, she accelerated in 8 hours at least a 100 times.

@@dtz1000 I have a point to make, after murmuring. So, she didn't follow a main road, and got lost often. Stopped as well. She said herself, she was gearing up. Also, 1500 feet elevation is not a joke. 60 strory building, and more, because maps have an underestimation.
Now the point. I struggled a lot with testing out which is the most eco, for cities are far from me, and the roads have ups and downs I struggled, because I had to pedal on straights (ain't easy), otherwise using 1st assist only, and from 5% up only a weak throttle help with heavy pedalling
I discovered years latter, by pure accident, that the real eco is 2nd gear (or medium) and fly. That's keep it as fast you can. It's not only more fun, much faster and using less juice. Don't ask me, why.
I have some clues, no science.

I've done long bike tours with acoustic bikes - longest was a 3-day 100mile ride in upstate New York.
While it was a great experience, if I could do that trip again, I would definitely take an ebike. You would travel more lightly as you wouldnt need to carry so many supplies (had camping gear in case I had to sleep in a remote area).
Most importantly, it would afford a level of comfort and peace of mind knowing I could cover twice the distance in the amount of time, without my legs feeling destroyed each night.

Hi Eilis, what a great day out and fantastic scenic tour for those of us that aren't located in England. The planned 200k was a really huge expectation. As an e-mtb rider of two years I could never anticipate anything like that sort of range, and I have never done 10+ hours in the saddle so congratulations to you. Maybe we might see some smaller scenic loops in your future???

I enjoyed travelling along with you. At 80 yrs I do not cycle any more but I can dream. I gave up serious cycling in 1996/97. I had constant punctures or failed inner tubes. I was down the local cycle shop ever couple of weeks to replace tubes. Eventually I gave up. Could you do a piece on these puncture resistant tyres - I would find that very interesting.

I’m also 80 but I ride my Ribble e-bike every day. I believe my bike will give me 70 miles, that is with the Range Extender. Im now thinking about buying another Range Extender which would probably give me 100 miles if I take it easy & switch off on the flat and downhill. But the saddle and handlebar suspension give me a nice comfortable ride.

I've had my engwe engine x since October last year and it's been a good ebike but not without it's issues. I run two batteries, a 13ah in the frame and a 10ah on the back and I managed about 55 miles on pas2/3 out of 7 and that's with a lot of hills. It now has bmx bars and a 56 tooth chain ring to eliminate ghost pedalling and a power analyser so you know how much watts and amps the bike is using. At its peak was pulling 19anps at 960w. It will reset every time you turn the power off and it will show you how many amp hours you've used on each session.

I am waiting for solid state batteries before upgrading my ebike which has an actual range of 60-70 miles in eco mode vs claimed up to 96 miles in eco mode.
Most of my journeys on my e-bike are 20-35 miles anyway. I have yet to run the battery below 20% which I have read is very bad for the battery.
Also, as a country we need a proper cycling network connecting towns, cities and villages- away from traffic if we’re serious as a country to make E-bikes an option for journeys of 100miles plus. Overgrown and blocked paths just aren’t cutting it.
Edit: Also check out the national cycle network by sustrans. Still a mishmash of off-road and road but the best we have got atm.
Looking at the e-bike again the claimed 160 miles on one battery should have raised red flags. If this was a dual battery set up ie check out the Niu dual battery e-bike or the R&M H4 then in excess of 100 miles is realistic, but one battery 160 miles? 🤥. Not surprised the actual range turned out to be half of that.

If Eilish had done that journey sticking to roads where she could have maintained a higher speed with the same effort, she probably could have got another 20 km or more.
The range depends very much on the surface type, hills, headwinds, assistance level and of course, the weight of the rider and any other luggage.
I'm waiting on my first e-bike with a 750w Bosch battery. It's allegedly got 120 km range on mixed terrain but I'm 2 metres tall and 120 kg and I carry a lot of luggage so add about 10-30 kg for every ride. Throw in the hills and winds and if I get 60 to 80 km per charge I'll realistically be very happy. More than 100 km and I'll be delighted. 80+ will get me to and from work for two days without having to charge.
It is intended as an all round workhorse commuter and car alternative.

    • @badabing8884
      @badabing8884 6 місяців тому +1

Exactly- how you ride it and terrains, wind resistance play a big part when it comes to range as does how heavy the rider is. But I am very light - under 60kgs and still don’t get the claimed range Gazelle say of 96 miles. Plus where I live we don’t have that many hills and I stick to roads and shared paths.
In the UK the legal ones are restricted to 250ws continuous power. We’re waiting for whether they will allow e-bikes of 500ws following a Govt. Consultation. But most bike associations are against it. Tbh it is not needed - and more protected cycling infrastructure is more important.

It would be nice if e-bikes came with USB power too, as they have a massive battery and lights already - then your phone wouldn't go flat despite navving all day.

Thanks for toughing it out. I probably would never try to do over 100 miles on my ebike and I supposedly could get 100 mile range on the lowest setting. I was thinking you might want to stay overnight someplace on the trip or camp. I've never put my battery to that test to see what I can get but using any of the other modes will definitely drain the battery faster, even if for a short bit.

  • @michaelmartin4383

I am not surprised, all these ebike distances are calculated on the basics that you use the lowest pedal assist on a flat surface all the way. To get a proper indication of the distance in a hilly country like Britain just divide the stated distance by two. Also, remember that as the battery ages it will not take you as far.
