    Revisited this series recently and made my first diy sketchbook! It's SO rewarding. I went with Arches Hotpress, 9x6 with a softcover - had paper laying around for AGES. Thank you for thorough explanation, some sections turned out to be wonky and the thread ripped a few times but looking at it now, I'm really proud I didn't give up 👀♥️ I know what I'll change next time and I'll get much better on the second go

    Thanks so much, you certainly have inspired me to try binding a sketchbook again. My first attempt years ago was a loosey goosey mess, but I filled it anyway. The tip about tightening as you go... was GOLDEN!

    I LOVE bookbinding, and it’s one of my favorite pastimes. I think I’m going to make a book press this week if I get a chance and do some case bindings or something because all these bookbinding videos popping up on UA-cam this week are making me nostalgic! I’ve always planned to do bookbinding on my channel eventually but now I basically want to drop all my other projects and build books!!! =>.

    I made a cover using a cereal box from the bulk store Costco (USA) that had two bags of cereal in the box so it’s slightly sturdier than a typical cereal box. I only have two signatures in it and I glued it on, only one side at a time letting it dry with weight on it overnight, then the other side. I didn’t cut it down until it was totally dry and I left a slight margin around the edge. I did sew a cover on a small one as I did the binding of the pages and it was tricky, hence why I glued the bigger one. I’m anxious to see how you do it with several signatures. Thank you for all you do!!!

    Have you made a combined watercolor paper and other paper (for writing and collage journal)? If so, have you found a good ratio of how to combine the pages in advance? I like to do both writing/collage, and sketching/watercolor in my travel journals. It seems a waste to use the good watercolor paper for the writing and collage so I'd like to do a combined journal. I thought about every other page different paper, but that means you can't do a watercolor spread across two pages, if so inclined. Maybe I want too much:)?

    I just found this tutorial. It was fabulous, especially showing how to tighten the threads. However, how do you continue when the thread runs out? My books now look awesome, thanks to your tutorial, but the mess is when thread runs out. I can't seem to join new thread neatly. What is your tip? 😊❤

    Thankyou Anne Laure......I have been too impatient and sewn my signatures together....wish I had waited as I didn’t do the vital step.....putting the needle through the loop of the one below. I will wait now, for your take on making a cover.....mine isn’t working as I hoped

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому

      Hi Anne! But maybe your method worked, even without using the loop below?! There are always so many ways to do things. 😊 Did you search for other tutorials to help you, while waiting for mine?! That's a good thing to do to get some guidance. 😌 😉 I try to do the cover tutorial as soon as I can. 😊

    When you attach two signatures together to use as a plein aire sketchbook how do you attach it to another one that is the same? You showed us how to attach two together to make a small sketchbook for the corrugated plastic cover. But how do you attach two of those together to build a larger sketchbook??

  • @katiekruger4381
    @katiekruger4381 5 років тому

    Oh dear! You need to tell us how we would tie off the 3rd signature if we don't want to add a 4th. I was following along, and now I've got the thread ending at the other side of the sketchbook. Oh well! Ha ha.

  • @lynn_thinks
    @lynn_thinks 5 років тому +1

    Hi Anne Laure! What paper do you use foe a multi-purpose journal like this?

  • @kookatsoonjan
    @kookatsoonjan 6 років тому +1

    thanks Annalaure....it looked like you pretended to not have cut the thread in this video, and just continued with a long piece of thread...what if you had cut the knot, with just the two signatures? Would you leave a tail on the inside of the signature you are adding, and not inside that...hard to explain in words...thank you for doing this...do you like Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane? from the 1967 era?

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому +3

      Hi! Yes, thank you for your question. In fact, I planned to make a longer video sharing several options like for example the one you are talking about, with having cut your thread previously and I shot everything but then I figured out this would be a bit messy and too long so I simplified. 😊 😉
      So, when you start with your 2 signatures already bound, you are going to start by making a knot, not leaving a tail. You have 2 options for the knot to attach your thread to the previous binding.
      One can be making a knot at the end of your thread and inserting the needle in the hole you see me having the needle in when the real tutorial begins (that's a hole at the end of your second signature, in your previously bound piece of sketchbook). When you pull the thread out, you have your thread ready as mine at 3:00. ua-cam.com/video/xpUIY7sVuKI/v-deo.htmlm The other way would be, without any knot at first, insert your needle and thread below the previous stitching to the left of the sketchbook like in my video then make a knot between the tail and the thread to tie it to the binding before staring once again at 3:00.
      Hope this helps! As you said, hard to explain with words. 😉

    Anne-Laure....my question is this: in the first video of this series, you said that you only use 3 sheets of paper per signature....then you bind those together with another signature of 3 sheets......now, here is where I need instruction.....when you have this 2 signature journal finished and want to add it to ANOTHER 2 signature, or 2 or 3 signature book, how is it that you bind all these different 2 signatures into one bundle, and then put the cover on it, like your India book???

    • @gingerdevalue2201

    Nope! This didn’t answer my question. Please see my previous comment with questions on your part one sewing 2 signatures together.i know how to make journals that are blank but want to know how you do this with previously painted pages because the pages....well it’s on the other video. And I think I figured it out because if you sew 2 signatures and then take them out to paint then sew them all together later that makes sense so maybe I answered my own question!!!!

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  5 років тому +2

      Sharon, I am sorry you got this impression the video didn't answer your question. Great if it helped you to figure out by yourself though! 😁 For me, it seems the same to sew the signature wether there is painting on it or not.... But maybe one day I will make the video with sewing the painted signatures if you feel that's different... 🤔 😊
