This song is an interpretation of King Louis XVI's lost final speech before his death following the French Revolution. It's written in Louis' point of view as he apologizes to his people and accepts his demise. For some background, Louis was imprisoned and publicly executed by his own people following his downfall. When he was marched to the guillotine for execution he attempted to give one last speech to his people before his death, but the French revolutionists booed and the executioners drums were played louder to drown out the sounds of his words. As so, before Louis could finish his speech he was forced into the guillotine and beheaded, his final words now lost forever.
oh damn... I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.
Wow thanks for that . I've loved this song since it first came out
I always wanted to know what this was about all my ideas were wrong
On every video about this song I’ve seen you say the same thing copy and paste but I read the entire thing and appreciate it every time
@@cantbebless hahah for sure ! When I first found about the whole King Louis speech it completely changed my perspective of the song and made me appreciate it even more! So I’m hoping it goes the same to everyone else who didn’t know about it :)))
This is one of my favorite Coldplay songs. They are such a fantastic group.
@@JoeBlow_4 I just listened and your talking shit go and troll people elsewhere 👋🏻
@@JoeBlow_4 Lmao no + The lawsuit was dismissed + L + ratio
Bonjour friend how many potatoes have you fried
I'm not a big Coldplay fan, but this song is a masterpiece..
It’s not just a masterpiece it’s the best
How could you not like coldplay…
I'm really coldplay big fan. Because this song on of the most history song..
U are colplay fan
Same
Please dive into more Coldplay. They're a great, great band with a huge following. Chris Martin, lead, is pure modern genius. A consummate musician, composer, poet, performer.
Have you not figured out the scam yet? They do not give any fucks about this song. Give someone 50 bucks to listen to a song and they will pander to you.
A poet is right!!!! Coldplay is the soundtrack of our lives, every emotion 💕💕💕
I'm french and Coldplay is my favorite band. This song is a reference to the French Revolution and the pocket of this album is a famous paint of this revolution.
Another little information : Chris Martin wrote this song on a piano in 20 minutes.
bullshit!
stolen from Joe Satriani.
they settled out of court.
They paid an undisclosed payment figure and no admission of guilt.
No, it is not referencing the French Revolution 💀 You French are really narcissistic 🤣
Sky full of Stars, Clocks, Speed of Sound ... So many to choose from. They are so good!!!
Don't forget classic Yellow
Paradise, The Scientist and Fix You are all fantastic
Adventure of a lifetime, Hymn for the weekend, Charlie brown
I didn’t know sky full of stars was be Coldplay
This song is kinda like how I feel about my life lol Feel like a king in youth, then find out your castles built on sand. glad you guys reacted to this
I feel the same…
I’m so ashamed that I never realized that’s what this song was about. I give you thanks for enlightening me. Truly.
@@faithshade1430 i mean people can interpet it that way but the song is actually about the last king of france before the revolution and his execution. So overall about king louis xvi and the french revolution
@@faithshade1430 It's an interpretation of the last words of the king during the French revolution, he never thought he was a good king or even adequate, he just tried to lead the best he could but was eventually executed.
How is it humanly possible to sit still and listen to this beautiful tune,I’m a nearly 70 years lady and I am going wild,it’s one of the best tunes ever, please do many more Coldplay, they are fabulous guys as well, love you two , mags West Yorkshire🇬🇧
I suggest to watch a live version of this song, like "Coldplay Viva la Vida London/Sao Paulo/I don´t know... " - incredible!!!
Boa 👏 👏
Just finished!
Didn't know they toured in I Don't Know, crazy
Love Coldplay! Clocks, Hymn for the Weekend, Fix You, Yellow, and A Sky Full of Stars are my favorites.
at 8:27 you were completely right. It was about King Louis 16th of France. At his execution, the crowd was cheering so loud that nobody heard his final speech and so that it was this song is.
Singing along with this with live, in crowd with thousands of people all just in the moment, joyful and connected, is a truly amazing experience. They put on an amazing show.
Same as Linkin Park, every Coldplay album has a theme. Every album is different. They're not aggressive as SOAD, Audioslave, etc. One of the best ever. Top All Time
Hey, BJ was right , this song is about the French revolution when the French Monarchy ended with the death of King Louis XVI who died by guillotine (head on a silver plate). The song is written by the King’s point of view
It's about a lot of different kings. The line "Seas would rise when I have the word" is a reference to a myth about King Canute the Great.
@@mulrichChris actually said that he wrote it about the French Revolution, and King Louis’ execution.
@@karencrookshank4971 he did not. The guitarist said it was about **a** king, but not anyone specific.
'The lyrics to "Viva la Vida" are narrated by a protagonist who says he "used to rule the world". Martin has explained the song lyric "I know Saint Peter won't call my name" in an interview with Q magazine: "It's about ... You're not on the list" to enter the pearly gates. When asked about the song, bass guitarist Guy Berryman said: "It's a story about a king who's lost his kingdom, and all the album's artwork is based on the idea of revolutionaries and guerrillas. There's this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that's crept into some of the lyrics and it's some of the pay-off between being surrounded by governments on one side, but also we're human beings with emotions and we're all going to die and the stupidity of what we have to put up with every day. Hence the album title."'
The painting is called Liberty Leading the People, by Eugene Delacroix. It's a reference to the French Revolution. It's also the album art for this!
The song about British Empire
The year 2000, and I walked into a record store, and I listened to the album Parachutes by Coldplay, and I bought it. A great day in my life
I gotta love Asia's smile when she is enjoying a song; oh and BJ is ok too.
They have so many amazing songs. This is a great one. "Fix you" is one you should react to. The video is great. But the message got me through a tough time in my life. It's so powerful.
This is one of the best of many great Coldplay songs. Love Chris Martin's vocals and songwriting.
Coldplay - The Scientist (Official Video)
This song reminds me driving out to Banff with a girlfriend that flew across the country to stay with me for a week during a summer between semesters. She brought this album for the ride and we listened to the entire thing. It really doesn't seem long ago but wow, it was.
This is their best song IMO. A sky full of stars, Fix you, Adventure of a Lifetime, Paradise, In my place, Clocks, Speed of sound, Talk, Something just like this all place highly for me too.
See them live is incredible. They give it all at every show for every fan and you feel that energy throughout the crowd.
These guys released their first full LP in 2000, and they were great (IMO) up to this release in 2008. A Rush of Blood to the Head and X & Y in particular were stellar. As BJ said they were considered more alternative then, but after 2008 they became progressively more poppy and they lost me. 'Clocks' would be a great reaction for you guys, I think. Great track ✌
clocks is absolutely brilliant
I’m with all those who said try to find some live performances from Coldplay, one of the most successful and brilliant stadium bands with so many anthems for the fans to sing along with. For an emotional ride check out ‘Fix You’
A smashing band for a touch of class have a look at Coldplay - Fix You (Live In São Paulo) - UA-cam. I'm an old git but this is great music. cheers and all the best from England.
A little geeky detail regarding the way this song was written: It's in the key of G-major, and the chord progression is IV - V - I - vi (4 - 5 - 1 - 6), which gives us the C major - D major - G major - E minor chords, respectively. It starts on the 4, not on the 1, and the 1 (G major) is never the first chord nor the last chord of the progression, so we never get a resolution in the melody, we never start and we never end on the root chord (G major) of the key, and it helps create that bittersweet, nostalgic vibe.
Great information, thanks
It’s actually in Ab major. It might be played in G on guitar to be easier
@@AlexOnThePianoD holy shit you’re right. You have to use a capo to play open chords.
Its an Ab major actually
They should use this song for the theme to "Napoleon" coming out in November. The lyrics are so fitting of him during his "reign" in Europe from 1803 to 1815.
Their signature song. The lyrics still resonate in today's turbulent world. A masterpiece as another listener said.
I thought this was a U2 song when it first came out. Then I found out it was Coldplay, so I listened to some more of their music and I really like them. Saw them in concert. They were so good, emotional and their audience is dedicated.
One of my favorite contemporary bands. I LOVE 💕 COLDPLAY!!!
Coldplay are just brilliant!! Adore Viva La Vida, as well as all of their other songs - sensational!!! xx
This is a decent song from Coldplay but they had some real greatness with "Everything's not lost" which is FANTASTIC, Yellow, Spies, Fix you, Trouble and that's just from their debut album Parachutes.
Yeah, Yellow, The Scientist, Coldplay are awesome!!
I’m not sure if anybody has commented, but the title of the song came from a painting by Frida Kahlo which has the same name. Chris Martin (the lead singer) saw it when visiting her museum and it’s pretty much a watermelon that has “Viva la Vida” carved into it. He liked the name of the painting and decided that he wanted to name a song the same way. Apparently he named other songs “Viva la Vida”, but none of them fit well until this song. I think he talks about in the Howard Stern show.
One of our kids liked Coldplay, and this was one of my favorites of theirs. Yes, I’m older than dirt. But, I do keep songs on my playlist for more than a minute.
Please do more Coldplay! Yellow, Fix you... all great songs. They always surprise me. Crisis Martin's voice is amazing! Great reaction!
The album of the same name in which this song is from is one of my favourite albums of the 21st century. It’s such an amazing listen start to finish!
Great reaction!
So much to think about with this song.
Magic is another great song from Coldplay.
This song gives me more life when I’m down and gives me nostalgia, this song is so beautiful to me
Oh you definitely need to check these guys out live! EXCELLENT performances! You see their true talent shine through all that studio "fixin". I saw Chris Martin sing w piano and guitar on Howard Stern and it was pretty amazing to see it off the cuff like that.
Y'all need to react tot his live in Sao Paulo. The crowd was absolutely insane and the nostalga with that one.
I'd never fully appreciated this song before, fantastic.
More please. 😃😃😃
I love this band and their sound.
This song was so popular, you couldn’t get away from it, but it definitely deserved it’s spot on the airwaves. I never really listened to the lyrics so I had no idea about the history behind it. That’s one of the things I’m really enjoying about watching these reaction videos; the commenters are so knowledgable! 👍👍😄
About Louis xvi of France...
me discovering coldplay through the song "sky full of stars" is my best discovery of music ever, i was like 9 or 10
Don't forget the the Coldplay/pet shop boys, Viva la Vida, Domino dancing version people!!
Great band! Very inspirational and melodic! 👍🌻
I think you guys nailed it with the nostalgia feeling. Im only 17 and this song was everywhere when I was young. Combined with how the song is constructed and the lyrics and its insanely nostalgic to me. Like, brought to tears type of nostalgic. Its such a strong song
Yay, yay, finally Coldplay! They are in my top 10 list of favorite artists, and this is my favorite song of theirs (I think, I love Yellow too). Plus I'm in love with Chris Martin; he's my boyfriend, but he doesn't know it yet 🤣.
Thank you for this reaction video on Viva la Vida. For your viewing pleasure, I recommend you watch the Live concert version in São Paulo, Brazil. The 4:08 video is on the Cold Play youtube channel. What fantastic audience energy. Thanks again.
💙💙💙 Coldplay!!! Please react to: -Violet Hill -Clocks -Cemeteries of London -Yellow -Fix You -The Scientist - - Thanks!!!
Asia, your assessment at the end is SPOT ON! Great job!
Got to see Coldplay back in May. BY FAR the best concert I’ve ever been to 🥹
Coldplay - Everglow (Alternate Music Video).
my favorite coldplay song, i think of the lyrics in relation to career jobs. loved the song when i quit working a decade ago n started living on my stocks' dividends ever since. my favorite line is "Never an honest word, but that was when i ruled the world"........love the melody too. most coldplay songs have great melodies, like in China princess", rihanna is in the official video of it.
This is the only Coldplay song that I like cause it sounds so different from their usual stuff. I love the instrumentation, especially the violins. A beautiful timeless song.
the main instrument is the cello
Coldplay have made some great songs. I'd respectfully suggest checking out a concert version of this song (and others if you get the chance)
Loved this whole album from start to finish! This is such a beautiful arrangement. Check out others for sure!
If you guys can see them live do it. They are so fun and entertaining. I love Coldplay! These guys really are so awesome!
B.J. is right, it was inspired by a painting.
Here is what wikipedia says:
"The song's Spanish title, "Viva la Vida", is taken from a painting by 20th-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. In Spanish, viva is an expression used to acclaim someone or something,[3] so "Long Live Life" is an accurate translation and the painting reflects the artistic irony of acclaiming life while suffering physically.[4] When asked about the album's title, referring to Frida Kahlo's strength, enduring polio, a broken spine, and a decade of chronic pain, lead singer Chris Martin said: "She went through a lot of pain, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida', I just loved the boldness of it."[5]
During the album's production, "Viva la Vida" was one of the songs that had polarised each member's opinion over which version they should choose. In an interview, Martin recalled: "We did quite a few different versions and went round the houses a bit and eventually settled on those treatments for it."[6]"

I love your comment about the song being a testament to finding one is authentic self after being dashed and beaten by the world. It takes a lot out of a person to get great success. Sometimes we do things that we later regret. I think the song is about realizing the folly in living for power, which is ultimately disempowering.
I love coldplay. Tx for your reaction. God Bless!
I may have never heard this song except my son was in middle school and he started playing it and I was astounded
You guys are both in the right. Songs can be about two things at the same time... Text and subtext. Love you guys.
90’s…nice! Here’s a couple: Back to the start; Fix you. Love the songwriting…❤️🎼❤️😎🔥
I love this song...but check out "Clocks", "Scientist", and "Daylight" among others.
Fix You is my personal favorite 🤗💓
Hope you guys realize now that you've done this it's obligatory that you do a reaction to " YELLOW " !
Those are some pretty powerful lyrics for me. 'When you were here, I ruled the world. Since you're gone, not even Saint Peter will call my name.'
🔥🔥🔥 Good job guys. Widen that palette! 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿🤍
Louis XVI lost head and kingdom of France in XVIII century, but song is basically about losing power
This and "Clocks" are both very engaging, IMO. A lot of their other stuff is more slow and soft; depends what you like.
Going to be playing this with them when I finally meet them in person!
I love that I end up seeing your videos in related videos I’m watching you dive into every thing 😂😂😂😂 it takes a lot to share thoughts what you think the overall message of the song could be and people in comments share thoughts like they had it all figured out without Internet their first listen 😂😂😂😂 Coldplay is dope Yal…you just got to listen…keep doing your thing
I kinda feel like it's about Napoleon. It could be any would-be emperor, though...
Sending the reactions back to back 🔥🔥🔥 trying to keep up 🤣🤣🤣
Sure you would enjoy "Only Time will tell" by the great band also named "Asia"!
Great group. 👍 Uplifting songs and videos.
Music is alternative rock a little modern day new wave with the electronics included.
Coldplay "SPEED OF SOUND" ❤️
P.S. This was a great reaction, thank you, I enjoyed watching!
Definitely check out Fix you and the scientist and hymn for the weekend. They have great songs! Love Chris Martin.
Thank you both, so much for playing a Coldplay track.👍
🗣 “I LOVE THIS SONG!!!” 💟 💜
The empire is reminiscing and had a moment of clarity- CP is a great band
The official music video for Fix You is probably my favorite song by them. I know you would love it
I was requesting one of these two songs almost every time you guys were putting out a new video, so here I am again trying to get just one of these ....MONA LISAS AND MAD HATTERS or ALONE both from ALIVE IN SEATTLE by HEART
Herod Antipas was tricked by Herodias who had her daughter dance for him in exchange for whatever she wanted. She demanded, and got, John the Baptists head on a silver plate. There are many biblical references in this song.
Hi guys, I really like Coldplay and hope you listen to more as they have a ton of great songs, and I really hope you listen to more of their mid music since everyone listens to their first songs and later songs, but I recommend
White Shadows
Paradise
Charlie Brown
Army of one/x marks the spot
Coldplay are very very good. Great songs...
I just got goosebumps..I wanna b a kid again🥲
Kelly Clarkson - Whole Lotta Woman, Loves So Soft, Meaning of Life & Go High. She has so many song.....Seens U Been Gone, Breakaway, Stronger, Miss Independence & Because of You
There are some songs that make you feel stuff - THIS is one of them 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Forever my fav song can’t believe it’s 13-15 years old at this point
A marvelous introspection on a variety of people and circumstances. Think recent politics/politicians who require some levelheaded perspective on their moments in the sun, as an example. Self-deception as the worst form of deception.
Yellow and Violet Hill are my two favorites of theirs
I think you would like Stryper (Do unto others) they did not get the recognition they deserve but they are hard rock with positive lyrics good harmonies and a great voice.
Asia's take made me think another song of that same nature, it's called Loaded and Alone by Hinder. You guys should check it out.
I think you would enjoy any live song of Coldplay. The performances in Sao Paulo and River Plate are awesome.
