This song is so meaningful to me.
Disintegration was the very first CD I ever bought. I got it just after release in 1989. I was in my late teens. I was so excited to try out the new CD player I bought with my own hard earned money. The CD was $16.99 way back in 1989 ($41.85 in 2023 dollars) which was a lot of money for a teenager back then. I carefully held the CD by the edges which was recommended at the time, put it into the tray. Turned the volume up, shut the lights off and laid on my bed looking at the ceiling.
Now for the real part of the story....
My mind drifted in and out mostly thinking about a girl I really liked at school.
As a teen, there were two things I just hadn't figured out yet...
    1) How to push away my shyness
    2) Find the courage to start a conversation with this girl, more than just a "hi"
Sad part is that I never did get that courage until in my 20's, but not talking to her is still one of my biggest regrets of the heart.
She vanished about 6 months before graduation. I think she must have moved. I have no idea where she ended up. But I think of her often and think what might have been.
_"and you smiled for a second"_
Thank you for listening. and thank you The Cure for helping us navigate our emotions with your powerful music.

It's weird...I have almost the same story but from the opposite angle. I was 100% metalhead at the time, complete with mullet, and terrible with girls. Until one night at a small house party, where I only really knew one other person there, I decided to pitch my normal shyness & hesitation and be the rude, overconfident guy that always seemed to get the girls I was interested in...and it worked. Or at least, it worked for a while...got her number, and a first kiss, that night, took her out that weekend, spent many a night over the rest of the summer driving around with her, on the phone with her, thinking about her. And then the summer ended, and I went off to college, and she stayed there to finish high school, and we fell out of touch as our lives grew in different directions.
She was the one who got me into what we then called "alt rock", bands like The Cure, and Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, Souixsie and the Banshees. And yet all these years, and many other "loves" (to varying degrees), later, this song in particular still makes me think of her and that last summer before childhood officially ended and growing up truly started.
_It's just the way I smile, she said_

The Cure were one of the first "alternative" bands I listened to way back in 1986, when I was attending journalism school for the U.S. Navy. Over the next couple of years I added to my collection bands like Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and many others. Music I still listen to today. In my last year in the Navy -- 1992 -- my ship, the USS Independence, made a visit to Sydney which was one of the greatest moments of my life. I believe we were there to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea. My ship was an aircraft carrier, and I was on the main deck as we came through Sydney Harbor, and one of the first things I saw was the Sydney Opera House. What a moment that was.

Scott Smith ........our city is very spectacular especially from the harbour, and the Sydney Opera House is my favourite venue to see live music. I have so many fabulous memories from that venue! I have been hooked on The Cure since their very first album in 1979, and seen them live on three occasions here in a Sydney, but was unable to see them on the last tour in 2019 at the Opera House. The tickets were so sought after that a ballot system was the only option, so I was one very disappointed follower to not get a ticket. The trade off was a live stream of the concert. I share your love of those other great alternative bands, and am glad you were able to experience Sydney from such a wonderful perspective.

I remember being at this gig and thinking when they do The Same Deep Water As You I'm probably going to die and if there's a nuclear attack I'm gonna ignore it and just transcend into one of the most important bands/musical troops ever and I'll be ok cuz it's The Cure. Love these boys and don't even start me on Robert's lyrics, singing, guitar and Gallup's bass playing and the glacial keyboard washes and the thoughtful tight drumming. A complete band which in my humble opinion outshine the Beatles EVERY SINGLE TIME.

It's strange how time passes. I bought this 1991 as a young teen and it I listened to it every day until Wish came out and my mom bought me that one. Now, I listen to these songs with my kids, some who are not kids anymore. In fact, every now and then we do music sessions and play a few of the pop radio songs from the 80's and 90's and then play the Cure and Depeche Mode and a few others that I loved so long ago, and I am so pleased that my kids can hear what I heard and like what I liked. The Cure is timeless and just the thing for a few of us in each generation.

Funny…I’ve seen The Cure 3 times..years ago, in the beginning it was so intimate in a small space in Toronto. It was all underground, punks, black, Mohawks etc. Then I saw then a few years later in a bigger venue, Half full of mostly college students I suppose. Then third time was at a huge concert stadium and it was mostly a younger crowd, almost kids ! We’ve all grown up I suppose. What I wouldn’t give to see them just one more time. Robert although quirky is an obvious genius, and the same for the rest of the players with him through the years. The Cure ❤️🎶❤️
