- The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex, in 1976. The band has experienced several line-up changes, with vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Robert Smith being the only constant member.
Plainsong is featured on Disintegration (1989), the 8th album of the band.
Lyrics:
"i think it's dark and it looks like rain" you said
"and the wind is blowing like it's the end of the
world" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
a second.
"i think i'm old and i'm in pain" you said
"and it's all running out like it's the end of the
world" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
a second
sometimes you make me feel like i'm living at
the edge of the world like i'm living at the edge
of the world "it's just the way i smile" you said
I walked down the aisle to this song on my wedding day
A very smart choice!
A Goth wedding??
That must have been a really, really long aisle. ;)
Great choice too. :)
How is it so far
OMG BEAUTIFUL
One of the greatest opening tracks to an album ever
It's amazing 😍
i have heared that the full album have been the greatest for this kind of music in the 90`s
@@Eet_Miadisintegration was released in 89
@@Eet_Mia no but its close enough to where people would be listening to it mostly in the 90s.
Disintegration is one of the greatest records of all time...
I do not find this song depressing. It actually calms me down and slowly heals my soul. I don't know why but it does. It gives me room to breathe.
I believe it's the Ethereal and Spiritual feeling in the song which truly takes command of your senses that you stop and give it your undivided attention. You're enveloped and taken on a Psychedelic voyage of your own images.
It is truly magical!
We Love You Robert James Smith!
The Cure can be healing for sure.
It makes me breathe easier also. It's better than Xanex.
Agree 100%. I’ve been told a few times by people that they find it depressing - then I’ve asked them to listen to it again and to realise it’s more about that moment of hope you can grab hold of in the worst situations. It’s similar to Everybody Hurts by REM in that regard; it acknowledges the pit of despair you can find yourself in - but reminds you there can be a route out, via yourself or others. It unashamedly talks about the stormclouds looming, but then then points your eyes towards the fractures of sunlight breaking through… I’m not a great writer, and AJ said this in way fewer words and far more expressively - but I agree 100%, Plainsong lifts and calms me like no other….
it's just the way i smile" you said
That feeling you get when you listen to The Cure.
Yep
oh fuck yes ..every damn time I'm in 1990 and properly lost in my first doomed love affair when I listen to them. Wonderful and bittersweet. For RKW with love.
Sublime
Chills!
I had tears in my eyes when they opened their 40 year anniversary show in London with this. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Never been to a gig, but i reckon id cry seeing the cure, like a true bucket list thing done
At first i was 140 years old when i heard this song for the first time. It still sound great, I am 17 now and I still love it
I'm puzzled by this comment but I like it 😅❤
I so so get you and relate to your words. Life has its' very strange ways. Nevertheless, glad to find people walking saber paths❤
Are you Benjamin button? You age backwards?😂
Sums up the stupidty of the Internet don't it 😆
Its that kind of coriddor of sound, just kind of takes you, i get it but im already old😃
This band got me thru many depressing Times in my life. Im 55yo now and still cant stop listening. Best band of all time.
Some say the best album of all time.
Me too. I’m 53 and still get goosebumps listening to them ❤
52 and still here
yeah its hard to know which bands are truly legendary until theyve been around for long enough and the cure has definitely handled time well. their music is phenomenal in every way.
This song holds the memory of my beloved cat in my heart. I love you Kenzo, and miss you everyday.
I hope you see Kenzo again...believe in Jesus Christ....
Nice name Kenzo
❤
My Russian Blue cat Misha died in 2008 and like you I miss him every day too! ❤❤❤
The Cure is a band you can listen to when you're both feeling depressed or feeling happy
Can understand why it was music based on goths now
Agree with your words 👍
They were kind of on a pop course at the start but definitely went the right way
It's happy sad, their music is just so good. Anytime I need to sulk for a bit and reflect, The Cure is always there.
@@JoJubjub-kx8lp on a pop course... at the start? I would say at the end, the 90s...
I first heard this song when I was 16 years old and I loved it, I am 45 now and I still love it❤
I was 19 old, now 56 and i heard again
Me 2
16 as well ... deep deep deep in the LA death rock scene.
Right
16 too then somehow I'm 49 now.....😳
I walked down the aisle to this song on my wedding day and it was beautiful and I bawled my eyes out. I was blessed to have my father by my side that day. He died 3 months later and my marriage crumbled shortly after but I regret absolutely nothing. It was still the most iconic and important day of my life and I’m so glad The Cure was apart of it. ♥️
lol. that was so funny . i mean your denial ...
@@andronis6452 What?
That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read.
I'm not at all religious, but God bless your dear father and God bless you, for being able to command such emotive words to such a beautiful song. ❤
@@andronis6452my denial of what?
@@johnwilliams2920thank you. I don’t think it’s much, but I appreciate the positive response.
This song genuinely belongs in another world. Our world does not deserve all that this song is.
this is my favorite song. not favorite cure song. favorite song. ever. it's so beautiful. they've opened three shows i've seen with it, 1990, 1996 (tears were streaming down my face as i sat alone in the rafters of the patriot center, in utter disbelief that they would lead with my soul song), and 1999.
"it's so cold, like the cold if you were dead, then you smile for a second."
best line ever.
+Stephen Velez
I was at the Patriot Center in 1996. With a friend who is no longer with us and his girlfriend whom I no longer speak to. My car broke down on the way to the show but somehow we still made it. Like you, I was in the rafters alone but the show was absolutely amazing. The screens projected behind the stage were awesome. Especially for Strange Attraction but for me Jupiter Crash was my perfect moment. Hope you'll be at Merriweather this June.
my wife and i will absolutely be at merriweather! i remember jupiter crash from that show, it was totally fantastic, i agree. i've always felt wild mood swings was under-appreciated and underrated. i'm sorry about your friend.
+Stephen Velez My wife and I will also be at Merriweather this June. the last time we saw The Cure was in 2004 at Merriweather, the year we got married. Amazing how things go round and round and round again...
+Stephen Velez - My name is Amy and I am a huge Cure fan . Please go to the website Same deep Water as you- can download the audio version of the 1996 Fairfax concert, I was also at that show around the 10th row on floor. I also have a bootleg video of the show from vhs sent to Legacy Box to convert to Dvd but I find I cannot download it to computer or youtube. I was going to send the tape out again for them to print another copy but takes 6 weeks or so. Let me know if you would like a copy, it is not the best but the audio cd on the above website is very good. also the fan website Chain of flowers will have all the info - Best fan website ever for updates, Photos and videos. Hope to see you also in June.
+Stephen Velez Opening with it again, right NOW.
I'm always surprised, whenever I revisit this song after a time, at how epic and powerful this tidal wave of sound still is.
Greatest opening to any album of all time
It's a song about death. But the melody and delivery is so beautiful, it can be interpreted into anything your creative mind allows. A love song, a break up song, a lullaby, anything ...
I still think Disintegration is their best album even though no-one agrees with me.
+Lee Morris Thank you South Park
Their best : no. One of their best : yes :)
then i'm no-one
oh and anyway, Disintegration is my best album of all time
I agree
The year looks 89.
Would I go back ?
Yes .
Horse is Crazy God yes I would.
Me too. The world today is so colourless, dark and plain compared to the 80s/90s.
Me too
90
Yep, you may be right. I was in H.S. - Senior . In 89 the kids still had new wave look & clothes. In the crowd of this concert , no one had that 89 look but more of that 90. I truly miss the 86-90 era. @@davidandren2597
Always listen to this at every years' first snowfall. One of the most beautiful songs ever.
Today 10/31/23 it snowed
I used to listen to this during the long NH winters. It really didn't help with the depression at all.
Im 32 The Cure has helped me get thru so many hard times in my life. Thank U Robert for always being there
You'll be 33 for a moment, a kid on the way and a family on your mind. But wouldn't take you 100 years to realize that that five fighting song is a ripoff of this tune.
It is the best song ever. Every time I hear it I have to cry. It touches my soul so much.
Remember buying the cassette after falling in love with "Pictures of you". Putting the tape in on my way home, this song completely blew me away with its beauty. This album opened the doors to The Cure, who has remained my favorite band through the years, and remains my all time favorite album..
Yes I do
I also bought the "Disintegration" album, on cassette, on a cloudy and overcast day in June,1989.
The album had just been released.
This album is in my top five all-time favourites!
The Beatles ~ "Revolver" '66
The Pink Floyd ~ "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" ~ '67
The Jimi Hendrix Experience ~ "Are You Experienced" (U.K. Version) ~ '67
King Crimson ~ "In The Wake Of Poseidon" ~ '70.
The Cure ~ "Disintegration" '89
WOW! Only just discovered this song by accident. A great feeling when you stumble across something absolutely awesome and unexpected :-)
...one of the most musically beautiful ever...xxoo..
I don't know why, but I get motivated everytime I listen to The Cure. This song in particular sends me to a very unique, and blissful place.

One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest albums ever . My top 5 !
Disintegration... O melhor álbum de todos os tempos...
Robert James Smith and The Cure at their most Ethereal and Psychedelic!
Released in 1989, it was a farewell to the '80's.
😢
The whole album was when you hear it like that, good call👍
I remember this song vividly. it was one of the most difficult times of my life, during my military service..
funny how a song so sad and depressing could have accompanied me, being sort of a friend to me when I was in need.
thank this beautiful life for the gift of music. it's worth living if only to enjoy things like these..
Peace.
I see why. It's a song that holds on to you, gives you the feeling you are not the only one being on the edge of a razor blade ;)
GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE; I AGREE; THIS IS PROBABLY THE GREATEST DEPRESSING SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL "OTHER' EMOTIONS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SADNESS AND ANGST; THE 2ND GREATEST CURE SONG AND A TOP 5 NEW WAVE/ALTERNATIVE SONG OF ALL-TIME
Interesting. I guess it's true that everyone has a different interpretation of songs/lyrics. I don't see how this song is sad and depressing. It's a beautiful love song that cheers me up every time. I guess to each their own. Best wishes to you 1BalBal1.
to each his own my friend.. definitely.
I feel like the music is engaged in a wicked dance with the lyrics, mixing up good intentions with dark, morbid vibes to create something that's painfully beautiful and, in my opinion, depressing.
best wishes to you as well, Michael.

+Paul André Good choise. I remember buying this album when I was 14 and it helped me trough some very dark days and nights ;)
+FrightfulAccountant I've heard this band's name here and there when I was a teen, but I never heard their music and searching on the internet I saw a lot of good stuff about this album I'm playing it on Deezer now!
+André The Weird lol ant-man brought me here....
+André The Weird You picked the right remedy - fantastic song.
+André The Weird Happiness will set you free
“Disintegration” is such an amazing collection of music by these guys. Great fucking band. Robert Smith is one talented bloke.
may this song play when I pass to a better life ...plz
After watching a good friend of mine go into a seizure and then coma from some research chem, then fully recover a a few weeks later, we rolled up a fat blunt to talk about it and he blasted this song in his truck as we toked. I could feel the deep bass vibrating to my soul and the ethereal waves lifting me higher than the weed itself. And I can never forget the night I heard this song or what it meant to me to be engulfed by such sweet sound waves and having my young friend alive and well to introduce me to this experience. It was a few years ago and this still is one of my favorite songs ever.
Robert Smith knows how to capture a moment in time and write lyrics that mean the world to a lot of people.
I loved you then and I love you now. What a wonderful man you are Robert Smith.
Robert Smith’s lyrics - emotionally deep, amazing.
Best song opening I know. Rest is great as well, but the opening still blows me away every time.
Bittersweet memories of those days in which I was living at the edge of the world...however, every time I listen to this I smile (for a second) :)
I honestly think that the cure is one of the best bands ever. They’re on my 10 along with the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the beach boys. They will for sure go down in history. Mark my words 🖤
Yes!!! And I would add Pink Floyd and Duran Duran.
This is definitely one of my favorite Cure songs ever. Very emotional song.
amazing opening to an amazing album
The Cure is more than an amazing band, its a feeling that hits hard on your heart, your mind and your soul 🖤 And Im forever grateful to you Robert Smith for that!!! ❤️

This song makes me cry
I heard this song for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I’m 57. I can’t stop listening to it. I don’t know what any of the lyrics mean but the music has taken me to a place I can’t describe. ❤
Totally with you, I'm 60 and also recently discovered this song just weeks ago. Intoxicating to say the least, I listen to it over and over again 💯🎶🎼🎵
Heard for the first time in 1989, when Disintegration came out, I was just 18......I don't why I was so scared about this song, and, I don't really remember when or why I felt in love wiht it.....maybe,really from the first time. Love is always like this.

I love the depth and texture of this track. One of my favorites by The Cure
The guitars are enough to knock you out, and be sure that they would do it in slow motion and that you would also be joyfully smiling at the same time.
One of my favourite songs and one of my favourite albums.
I watched them play this live last night and feel my soul is complete ❤
Bawling now.
Thanks The Cure, just too beautiful.

Disintegration is the best album ever written by anyone in the world !and this is the best song on it !

Robert Smith rules. The Cure is my favorite band ever.
I was born to love with this song, and I'll probably die with it too. It's so good., makes you believe in spiritual world
This is the kind of song when you find true love. It's like the moment is finally here and it's all you have long for from the start. It's hard to gather real serious feelings when you've been hurt so much you just take things the way they are sometimes and just move on always. However when you finally reach that moment when you have found someone you can lead on and comfort it's beautiful oh how sweet it is, and tender it is, the music just seems to go so well with the feeling of love. Oh how to be able to make love to song like this
Omg,my heart, amazing band. Gives me the feels
I played my late Mama this special song one day in 2009 she cried then I heard Robert Smith cried too this very song. Very much emotional song Miss u Mama Robert Thanks for all memories Nov80 babie here
this song gives me another reason to continue living honestly
The whole album is a classic. This particular song I play 90 times before I can get to the rest of the album. 32 years ago and if this album were to drop today, it’d be a classic.♥️💯
I discovered The Cure while in my 7th grade year. I am now 46 years old and I still listen to them daily. Good music never dies.
A real masterpiece , timeless .
One of the most epic entries in history. Also this album greatly close the eighties in my opinion. Still feel ice in my spine!
The most beautiful song ever ....
Just wild to see all the gen X and older mils talking about all there times with The cure. My first GF and I used to drive around and listen to The Cure and talk about all our future plans together and how much we loved each other. I was 17 lasted till I was 24. Life happened drugs and booze and other stuff too. That was over 20 years ago and when I hear these songs takes me right back to that love.
Simply this song gives me goosebumps!!!
This whole album is BRILLIANT
