Watching a total eclipse is a life changing experience for sure.
Funny thing is Carbondale was in the path of totality for the 2017 eclipse too.

Solar Eclipse in Carbondale, IL. 8.4.24. that looked pretty cool....
It was spectacular. It got so dark outside. The temperature dropped sharply and the birds went berserk. The best part for me was seeing stars and planets in the sky at its peak. Incredible experience.

We're in Columbus, Ohio. It was awesome at COSI (Center of Science and Industry). They did scientific experiments with the kids. It was great! It's wonderful for Americans to be together as one. I really miss these days of solidarity. Nice that you offered a telescope. Way to go! So classy!!
