He knows he's about to die, and he doesn't want his baby brother to be worrying. He wants to see him happy, to have some sense of normalcy on his last day...

+Kei Not back then... That was the first real time he died. Also, there was a chance that the show would end after the 3rd season. Which means, the original ending was just going to be Dean going to hell. They even reference this on the show, when in the fourth season they say that Chuck Shurley's Supernatural book series had only been published till Dean going to hell.
It's funnier when you remember that during the filming, they had to constantly remind Jensen not to sing properly because Dean is supposed to suck at singing.
And Jensen is actually a really good singer. :) I love his song Angeles.

My god, this scene kills me every time I see it... Dean has only got a few hours left on earth before going to hell and the last thing he wants is to make Sammy smile and make him feel better. Even when facing death and hell, nothing is more important to him than taking care of his little brother.
Jensen is such an amazing actor, that look on his face at the end of this scene breaks my heart.

you know what are the 2 saddest things in this scene? for 1: this is the last time we see this Dean, the dean that truly enjoys what he does, the dean that's alive inside, and 2: even when he's completely scared of what's going to happen, he puts everything aside for his little brother's sake, and that's really heartbreaking

One of the best scenes I've seen in any TV show. It perfectly describes both of the main characters, specially Dean. That look on his face towards the end gets to me every time. Perfect acting.

Yeah it is a great scene. Actually i started watching Supernatural about 2 months ago and im currently at season 9 and let me just tell you that im really suprised how good this show is... Ive been watching a lot of TV shows, Breaking bad, GoT, True Detective, House of Cards and many more so i wasnt expecting too much from Supernatural but i was so wrong... Its just a great great show. And its so consistent, its been great for 9 seasons so far...
That look on Dean's face at the end is heartbreaking! It definitely reflects his fear :(

It makes me extremely happy because of the reasons you mentioned, but it also breaks my heart, especially near the end when Dean just stops singing because he knows it's gonna end in his death... :(

lol it's been 12 years and I'm just getting into this show. I just finished season three and I might be crying
ok the thing is when Dean comes back from Hell he has a line he says to Sammy that's like,
"I don't what's scarier the fact you ___ or that you're a fan of Bon Jovi." (I forgot the actual line whoops) iMPLYING DEAN DOESNT LIKE BON JOVI. HE DOESNT. BUT HE KNOWS SAMMY DOES. HE JUST WANTED TO EASE HE BABY BROTHERS WORRY I CANT W THESE TWO SHITS
OH GOD I'M NOT CRYING I'M JUST SWEATING REALLY HARD FROM MY EYES
My thought were that Sam didn't really like them much in this scene but after Dean went to hell he probably remembered singing this with Dean and so he listened to Bon Jovi on repeat until he became a fan or tricked himself into thinking he was and so Dean is surprised when he comes back over Sam's obsession with Bon Jovi and I just made myself cry.
They rock, on occasion which is accurate.
This scene is so tragic because it just cements how self-destructive the Winchesters can get for the sake of family. Even this little moment, it seems like Dean just wanted to distract Sam and have him be happy instead of having Dean talk through his fears the way Sam originally wanted. Just another reason I love this show -- just so much great attention to details and characteristics. And now it's rocking its 11th season. Love it. :)

the most heartbreaking part of this is that dean is actually trying to cheer up his brother and stop thinking about dean's imminent death and spent the last hours with his brother having a little bit of fun before his demise. holy shit man, that's both sad and really heart warming

God, the end breaks my heart. It shows Dean isnt care free and un worried about the whole thing, he's just trying to cheer Sammy up and make sure he isnt sad like a good big brother would. Always taking care of Sam before himself, even in the end.

This scene always makes me cry. Dean knows that he's going to hell and he's terrified. But instead of worrying about that, he decided to play a song and start singing just so that he can get Sam to smile. He wanted Sam's last memory of them to be a happy one. This shows just how much he really loves his little brother 💔

What I really love about this scene, is the fact that so much happens in such a short amount of time. Dean refuses to admit he's afraid, and displays this fear in a typical Dean fashion, by turning on the radio. He diverts the discussion of his possible death by singing. In the process, his instinct to protect his brother kicks in. He ensured Sam was happy. Something he'd always done. And it finishes off with a full resolution: Dean's realisation/acceptance that this could be the end. He made Sam happy, and that was all that mattered to Dean. This all happens in the span of a minute and a half.
But it will always warm my heart to see Sam and Dean singing together, like brothers.

a lot of great rock singers aren't the classical definition of "good" because they don't hit notes as perfectly as people want them to. hell, lots of people in the 60's were ready to write off the stones because they didn't like jagger's singing voice. but his emotion is what makes him good imo. same thing with joey ramone. not that dean (jensen) is in that class of singers to begin with, but i like to think emotion is a little bit more important in rock n roll than range, though it doesn't hurt to have both. not everyone can be steve perry. when you can't have a singer with both range and emotion, i'd take the one with emotion over the one with the range, even if it hurts just a little to hear it B^)
the writers actually told Jensen to sing off key in this scene. Hes actually a decent singer.
Just search for Jensen Ackles singing. The guy is a talented singer. Here he deliberately sang off-key, as he did in S10.

I love this scene it shows how much he really loves sam and how he values sams like way more than his own and he doesn’t want sam to be worried or upset, he started singing the song to make sam smile and forget not to distract himself, he knows he’s gonna die and he’s terrified but he can’t show sam and that really shows when Sam’s singing and dean knows he’s happy his strong facade wavers and you can see his terror

This scene I both love and hate, I love it because it’s such a sweet brotherly moment of Dean comforting Sam without ever having to say anything; I also hate it because it’s all leading up to Dean going to Hell.

This is one of the saddest scene for me, but also one of my favorites. The way Dean tries to lighten the mood, and Sam blissfully distracted for the moment. And the way Dean must be thinking of his future and how he knows it’ll be over soon… It’s just very somber, that’s the best way I can describe it.
But it makes me feel sad and a little hollow when I try to put myself in Dean’s shoes; I have no idea how I would react or feel if I knew that that was how I’d meet my end, and how the rest of my eternity would play out. It’s a well crafted scene. Not much said in words, but simultaneously lot said through the cinematography and set mood of the scene.
I completely disagree with Dean. Bon Jovi rocks-always.

It's hard not to worship every flucking piece of clothing these two ever wore considering how hot they look in them. It gets even harder when they lose a shirt or two and end up with an unclothed torso. :)

Me and my friend had a moment like this 2 weeks ago.
The expression on Dean's face while Sam is finally letting go is incredible. It's odd, it reminds me of when I left the states years ago. At the airport I told me 5 yr old cousin that I'd left my goldfish behind for him, he got all excited and kept hugging me and thanking me, it was a really big deal to him. The whole time I was trying desperately to hide my feelings cause I didn't want to ruin the moment for him, so even though I was breaking up inside I just kept trying to smile.

This is totally a grea scene, one of the best scenes in the show. The acting of Jensen and Jared is perfect. Sam singing becoming happy for his brother, but in total oblivion of what Dean is thinking in that moment. And Dean hiding his worries, but we can see how bad he is. Their face, moves, are amazing, a very good acting. This almost makes me cry

Bruh its such an emotional nd beautifully crafted scene, I was almost in tears, u can literally feel dean's anxiety nd fear while trying to ease up the situation, along with the gravity nd impact of whats to come, season 3 is honestly my fav season.
My god I love these two. Dean knew Sam was anxious and sad and all that, so he put on the radio, (even though he later implies that he dislikes Bon Jovi, and when he first hears it he kinda grimaces, then glances at Sam) because he knows Sam likes it. When he looks at Sam at 1:13, it's implying that they've sung this together before, and that this is Sam's part. That's when Sam starts singing for realsies. That's also when Sam starts smiling.
