  • Large box or chest lids can be heavy and if they are not supported, they can fall and make a startling noise, or worse, cause an injury. One of the best ways to support a box lid is with a torsion hinge. Torsion hinges feature an internal resistance mechanism that helps prevent the lid from falling. We show you how to install Rockler Torsion Hinge Lid Supports.

    Saw the video and ordered a pair of 30 lbs hinges (60 lbs total) for a desk with a storage compartment. They appear robust, easy to install and work perfectly. Hopefully they last over the long-term.

    Can these type of hinges be counter sunk into the back wall so the lid sits flush? Thanks for the video 👍

    These torsion hinges are a great idea do you have any suggestions for a supplier of these hinges that is less expensive than rocker. I think $20 per hinge minimum is a little extreme.

    Anyone have a specific hinge they would use with ABS plastic? Thanks!

    Can these hinges be inset so that the lid sits flush? Looks like the back side of the lid is sticking up the thickness of the hinge itself.

      Yes, they can. Cut a mortise in the back panel of the box the width of the entire hinge, so the hinge sits lower. The mortise should be 5/32” deep.

      @@christopher_hawn should you cut the mortise in the back panel and the lid for the lid to sit flat on the chest/box?

    Is there a standard measurement for how far from the edge of the lid each hinge should be placed?

    I have a chest with a bigger lid. It is about 1-1 1/2 inch over hang on all sides. Will these torsion hinges work if they are not attached to the end of the lid?

    easier to mark the lid before mounting hinges to the box

    What would be the overhang? Looking to have full overhang all the way around chest. Lid is dimensioned to provide 3/4” all sides.

      You can have an overhang as large as you like on all 4 sides, Rockler says you can either Flush mount or Overhang

    The wood that you mounted of the hinge on looks to be exactly 3/4. What if my chest has 2” lumber. Then what?

    I did everything I could to avoid spending money on these expensive hinges, but it looks like in the end, it would have been more cost effective for me to get them in the first place. :(

    He said it protects fingers while he shows that it will close freely onto his fingers...This is not what they're supposed to do and it's making me doubt them.

    • @davebennett5069
      @davebennett5069 3 роки тому

      i think he means it is preferable to a free-falling hinge. it will close SLOWER, not that it will stop completely. rather than breaking your fingers, you'll be slowly squeezed and can move out of the way. if you want to prevent the lid from hitting fingers entirely, then leave a relief gap in the sides and front panels that is finger-width. only having the lid actually contact the corners and the rear panel.

  • @SceneArtisan

    Why not just make the wood,.. into hinges,. instead of buying metal, separate hinges??

    • @christopher_hawn
      @christopher_hawn 5 років тому +2

      Because that wooden hinge will allow the lid to come smashing down on little fingers. The whole point of this hinge is safety for little ones. If you don’t need that, don’t buy them.
