Nice your children will cherish their boxes and hopefully will become heirlooms for future generations. I would clamp the scrap board to the inside of the box to add support while you chisel and router plane the mortice. That way any pressure to the back would be strengthened by the piece of scrap. I also screw the hinge in place then knife around the hinge that way you know the hinge will fall right into place after you cut the mortice. Thank you I am so glad I found you site I have gained so much in information and inspiration. James
nice Job sir, I like the term clock your screws, I had never heard that term before. While hinges can be a pain, if like with anything take your time and breath it will turn out great. Thanks all the best sir.
Love to see a video on installing small hinges on wooden boxes that have the lid flush with the base. Can never get the hinge barrel set properly to maintain the fit.
I think I will make a similar chest ,where did you source the side bails they have a little ornamentation but npt much ,nice. I am on to big box to get boards for the shaker bench for another stay home project.
After watching you drill the screw holes with tape for a depth gauge, I'm wondering if you are familiar with drill stops? We use them when doing sheet metal work on aircraft. There cheep, adjustable to whatever depth you need and make it practically impossible to go to deep. www.yardstore.com/drilling-and-cutting/drill-bit-accessories/drill-stops
Kia Ora & Good Evening from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand …great video bro …
Nice work. Lovely Children! Dad of the year!
That's so kind of you!
Really beautiful work, Joshua! 😃
Thanks a lot for all the tips!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks so much!

I'm very new to woodworking and I appreciate very much your detailed explanation of the how and why of each steps.
I'm really happy that it's helpful!
Thank you very much, appreciate that detailed tutorial!

Thanks so much Richard!
Looking forward to the traditional hack video coming up.
Great video. I always mess up installing hinges. You helped a lot. Thanks
Glad to help Fred!
You make it look so easy I had some adjustment to make so it was flush on face and edge of humidor.
Very nice. I do exactly as you do. I learned from Paul Sellers.
Nice Mike!
Good work, well explained, Thanks
You're most welcome Tom!

i like how it is about carving
Perfect 👌
Thanks!
Is there a problem with installing the hindges on the outside; and would there be any problem not making the mortises?
Currently following this video to install hinges on a historic sea chest.
Nice tutorial video. Does it matter which part of the hinge we place on the box and which on the door?
Great timing...my hinge work is pretty shabby...rr Normandy, France
Glad it was helpful Richard!
Slotted head screws just look so much better particularly when clocked
I agree Peter!
Very nice! Curious, were you able to find the works at the dollar tree 🌳 in your area?
I found it at Big Lots, but I've heard dollar tree has it too.n
Nice video! I am working with walnut. Can I mortise this wood as easily as you did with the pine? Thank you
Fantastic chests. I'm very interested in the finish you plan for the poplar.
Thanks! I'll be using paint. Each kid gets their own color. But I do like poplar without paint too...just after it's had time to darken.
@@WoodAndShop I just built a fiddle back out of poplar, how long till it darkens?
@@jackpardun2898 Hmm, I guess I haven't paid very close attention. If it's near a window it should darken sooner. But maybe a few weeks?
You can get rid of the gap in the hinges by pinching them in a metal vice.
This seems to be a great channel for continuing woodwork from where Roy Underhill left off...
Agreed. Paul Sellers has great videos too, in a similar style.
LOL. What a compliment! Although I use power tools too 😄
@@WoodAndShop I'm not holding it against you. Power-tools have their place, too. ;)
@@WoodAndShop Great video, as usual. Are you a fan of Paul Sellers?
@@tom120ali I don't have much time to watch other people on UA-cam, but from what I've seen he's a great guy!
You're a very unique guy n think you get copied but love your stuff
Thanks James! Copied by who?
@@WoodAndShop o I won't say but another you tuber made an "aging your hinges n hardware" video like the day after or two. Keep up the good work though
@@J.A.Smith2397 LOL! Probably just a coincidence.

Lee Valley. Very affordable!
@@WoodAndShop thanks
@@mwrcrft No problem!

Don't run your fingers over the screw heads you will regret it if you get fragments of metal in your finger tips
