Lyrics:
Throw away the radio
Suitcase that keeps you awake
Hide the telephone, the telephone, telephone in case
You realize that sometimes you're just not okay
You level off, you level off, you level off
But it's not alright now
You need to understand
There's nothing strange about this
You need to know your friends
You need to know that
I'll be waving my hand
Watching you drown
Watching you scream
Quiet or loud
And maybe you should sleep
And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
Throw away this very old shoelace
That tripped you again
Try and shrug it off, shrug it off, shrug it off
It's only skin now
You need to understand
There's nothing fake about this
You need to let me in
I'm watching you and...
I'll be waving my hand
Watching you drown
Watching you scream
No one's around
And maybe you should sleep
And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in... Oooo
I'll be waving my hand
Watching you drown
Watching you scream
Quiet or loud
And maybe you should sleep
And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
In here, in here, in here...
My daughter is 12 and she said that this is her favourite song 🥹 I’m so proud of her 🥹🥹🥹🥹
I love when that happens! 🥰
My daughter is 15 and we don’t share rock n roll in common but hip hop we do. She was tryin to tell me about “Kim” from Eminem n I was like “girl I was listening to that in high school!” 😂
But it’s a beautiful thing being able to share music from your childhood with your child. 😊
@@jay_rubyxFor real. My 11 year old started getting a little into rock music. She's so surprised that mom actually likes some good songs! 😂
@ love it! 🥰
Not to be repetitive but I grew up in the late 80s and the 90s and I truly realize just how blessed and fortunate I am. It was the real deal.
It's something I thank god for, often.
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
This is the epitome of the 90s right here
well said! your comment gave me chills..people are so different these days..im thankful i grew up in those times too..i find myself looking back a lot..🤘🏻
Seriously was the best time to grow up, crazy first time to the world new shit being thrown at us every day.... ESPECIALLY MUSIC!
90’s alternative was the golden age of American music. Glad I grew up with it.
really !! the 90's was a golden era in music, either for metal, rock, alternatif, rap, RnB.... it was a beautifull time to grow as a teenager !
Everyone thinks their era was the golden age of music. Many say the 90s was when music turned to shit..
These guys are Canadian though
@@eman8209I did not know that! That’s pretty cool.
Like eman8209 said, they're Canadian.
In that Alternative Canadian Rock that rushed across the border were also Big Wreck, Crash Test Dummies, Matthew Good Band, Bare Naked Ladies, Tea Party, among others. Andy favorite band, though they didn't get as huge in the States as they did in Canada, The Tragically Hip.
Folks in the comments, feel free to add other Canadian bands from this time period.
Not many people remember our lady peace. They are a timeless classic!!!!!!
My little sister passed away. Our Lady Peace’s music helped us when my mom passed away when this album came out. We would play it for comfort. I’m doing that now to help. These guys music has always been there for me my whole life.
Things that didn’t happen.
My best friend died shortly after this album was released and anytime I hear any song off clumsy I think about him. Remember through the music
@@rasputin7633 people die and people grieve. You have no one to love and are not loved so this is lost on you. It's sad and I'd feel bad but I feel like you deserve to be ignorant to such things.
Sounds like you've had a hard life!! Hang in there bro!!🤘
Lord hopefully not now. Their music is shit
This song used to disturb me and comfort me at the same time--I was 17. It has the same effect now--I am 43.
Same.
Same can be said for the video. Can't go wrong with Matt Mahurin (who directed it)!
Same here, nostalgia comforts me, yet I'm sitting here crying
we will never know the potential of past artists on the internet era
bravo
To the ones I shared life and the best of times with...40+ year olds...love yall
41.. they were my favorite band in high school ❤
For anyone that's having a hard time: I am so sorry you are having a hard time. Please remember that you are capable of surviving whatever you're going through. Look for the positive things in life that make you happy. Do those things as much as possible. If you can't think of any positive things to do, look for inspiration from others that do. Find things to do that you are interested in. Feed the positive side of you. It's in there. It may be hard to find, and you'll probably have to go through the negative sides of you to get there. But you can do it. I promise you it's possible.
Life without hard times is no life at all.
Not true. Lots of great (misguided)kids making great tunes
It's possible. I changed my whole life. Which I named the trauma train. I still have shitty times but I learned they don't matter. Minimize the variables that can cause problems, maximize opportunities and be near people you want to be like. If they have what you want they are worth having around. If they have nothing but problems you don't want no part of that. My life is better than ever and I'm still working on making it something I can call great. Best of luck through your hard times.
Thank you, I really needed to read this right now 🙏🏻
Very well put
I was 12 when my sister took me to see Our Lady Peace in Fort Myers FL. I begged her to take me, she had no idea who they were. She left that concert as much of a fan as I was!
That is truly dope
I’m 48 and still love this music...I’ll wait another 20 years for a resurrection of the grunge!
Long live grunge
hopefully some folks like me will get fortunate enough to bring it back with a vengeance. Grunge in particular, and also other sub-categories under rock. There is something very special in that music -- seems more heartfelt and soulful, thought-out.
Cheers to a fellow grunge fan.
@@NERDAZOIDS love this comment. Here to support, buddy
Glad there're still young individuals like you who truly loves rock music. May it be grunge or the other sub-genres. Just keep playing \m/
@@DuncanWLievi 🍻
I want electro grunge....
Literally one of the most underrated bands of the 90s. Def the best thing to come out of Canada musically during that time.
What about nickel back? 😂
The 90's were truly magical. I'm blessed to have lived my teens and 20's in the last great decade.
I always call it that. I wish I'd been older, but at least I was twelve at the millennium. I feel lucky for that. I still remember the music, the time, the feelings so strongly. It was so amazing and I miss it so painfully.
@@pluviophile1988 Man...had no idea soo many people felt the way i do! Pretty crazy
Agreed
I was a kid in the 90's, and I miss so much about it. I wish I could just relive that decade over and over, growing older each pass through, rather than these past 20 years.
Man the 90's were kind of awful you're lucky to have survived being a teenager in the 90's. I know I was there and barely got out alive.
Such a timeless canadian classic from OLP. For those who don’t understand the meaning of this music video, it is about the singer wanting to help his friend who is a victim of domestic violence but the friend wont open up about it so the singer is powerless to help him.
90’s alternative music just hits differently. I was obsessed with this song as a teenager.
Ok, up to 6.8M...that's better. People discovered the greatness of OLP.
6.9 now. A 69 ruined by a period.
@@codytylek7836 Nice one.
As a Korean-Canadian visiting South Korea this past summer, I was really happy to hear this song being played at a Korean restaurant.
That's pretty cool.
I live in Korea--Cool!
Kamo Pusha didnt know koreans liked alternative rock cool that .
This comment gave me hope that tomorrow is not lost.. thank you for sharing this.
Oh that's really cool!
45 years old and I still listen to this song, comforting song for someone who suffers depression, it helped me through my depression! To those still listening you guys know good music.
Definitely a time machine song that brings you back, very comforting. I just turned 45 I'm on the same boat.
you said it perfectly
I remember when a friend was like, you ever heard the band Our Lady Peace? And my first thought was ummm... Yeah sorry man, you're not about to put on some evangelist gospel band. But then he smiled and put on this song and i was blown away and utterly confused at the same time when i heard those lyrics in the chorus. Been a fan ever since. Now that friend has passed away and i think of him everytime i hear an OLP song. I'll be a fan for life thanks to him.
RIP, Randy, still listening down here.
suh kyut :')
Joshua Jones im so sorry, but hey a little piece of him to remember music can bring people together
What lovely fiction
Joshua Jones going for that Pulitzer Prize?
Antipopularization@ LMAOOO You're so stupid it's embarrassing. You must be a real unit IRL. Ass kickin's headed your way!!! Good luck!
They played this when they opened for
Smashing Pumpkins yesterday in Montreal. I shed a tear, the nostalgia kicked in. I had to keep my composure. 😂 These times were great !!! I can’t believe this was 25 YEARS AGO !!
That's the perfect lineup.
OLP opening for the pumpkins is a great combination!! That must have been a helluva show...
OMG 25 years, you're right!
Good to hear they’re still circulating around.
He sounds like Billy Corgan
I simply adore this song, it really resonates with me. I come from a history of physical abuse from both family and strangers. Being bipolar as well, the weight of my illness had brought me close to suicide on several occasions. This song truly helped me through some rough patches. So much so that I got the lyric "level off" tattooed on my left arm. These guys had a hand in saving my life and I am forever grateful.
Hippie4Hire amazing! Stay strong my friend!!
What an amazing story ❤️ Stay strong, friend!
I got "Ordinary's just not good enough today" from Supermans Dead.
you are amazing, don't ever doubt it!
Happy New Year's buddy!
ahhhYES!!!!I love level off!!!
I honestly can't remember the last time I listened to this and as soon as it came on I just started singing and remember all the lyrics. Amazing how some things will stick with you.
its called subliminal messaging
Haha me too
The absolute magical power
Me too
It's good to see few months old comments instead of +3 years. People still craving for OLP 🔥🔥
These songs...the videos...that feeling...does not exist anymore
My dad suffered with Alzheimer's for 9 years. The last 5 were hard for all of us.A physician who helped people.A great grandfather, father, husband, professional. This song reminds me how frustrated you would get when you'd look at me and not know what to say or how to say it.Your eyes told me everything.I love you dad.You made me who i am today.
Lost my father too, only 64 years old .He died way TOO SOON..He was the best.
My grandma died from Alzheimer's. I think the hardest thing about it when I was a child and she was in the earlier stages of the disease was trying to keep her away from mirrors. She didn't recognise the person in the mirror as herself and would try to talk to it and wanted to always introduce me to the person she was talking to in the mirror. I always had to try to keep the door to the bathroom closed when she didn't need it and tried to direct her away from the bathroom after she was done so she wouldn't get stuck talking to the mirror.
Unique chord changes and melody, yet maintaining a level of simplicity. Awesome song.
I'm 45 now, and yes....the 90's was indeed the LAST great decade.
Yes indeed :) so glad I got to be there. 40 here btw. Doesnt it seem like yesterday?
Just turned 40 and I agree
43 here. Yes, you are correct.
I turn 40 next week and agree with you 100% the 90's was a great decade for music.
I'm 43 and 100% agree.
I'm well into my 40's and I still feel this song like I did in my teens. Nothing hits and sticks with you like a 90's song from your younger days. The memories and feelings it brings back are something that can never be replaced.
Big OLP fan from the 90's. Their alt-rock was relatively good-natured, which I appreciated.
I am a 15 year old Korean student. I'm young, but I really like rock. OLP had a big influence on me getting into rock.
47 years old Still Love this Song
God damn, I miss this decade and most of all, that year. 1998, what a great era for music, the economy, peacetime, the environment, and being young.
Tim Nelson 90s music hands down the best music by far.
Me too, Tim! It makes me sad it's over.
kudos t that, miss the 90's..come back!
Tim Nelson this was the best decade for music. The good ol days
the 90's hmmm the generation that grew up with beavis and butthead
I love how to this day nobody questions how tf a tall glass of water flooded a whole bedroom. We just let 90s music videos be legendary weird. LOL. This song got me through some depressing times in grade and middle school. OLP consistently made music that spoke to my soul.
44k followers? Proves social media is a sell out to gain attention. Because what Raine has done for not only Canada but the world... He's way more known than that. This band as a whole is way more known than that aswell. This band will forever live on.
Moved to US in 1998... This band got me thru and reminded me of my roots...
This band is so good. It’s so nice to get on UA-cam and listen to music that actually meant something.
So happy to have been a teen during the 90s. So happy to have been a part of that great decade, and to have had some of the best memories anyone can have during those GREAT times.
These guys have always had a unique sound, great lyrics and song structure. Great stuff that holds up so well all these years later.
I'll be 40 in March! This is my music right here! So many good memories listening to you Guys! Still rocking out
I totally forgot this song even existed. Almost in literal tears. It’s so weird how a song can take you back to a certain time and place and make you have feelings you haven’t experienced in decades. I’ll never forget this song again…
This is a lost gem. A song about karma coming back on someone to the fullest. So glad I have a long memory and remember songs like this.
Naptown? I live in Indy too!
Brings back memories
i remember the late 90s when i was younger in vancouver and this would come on the radio in my mom's car or at home and everyone was crazy about it including myself. i miss the beautiful music of the 90s and just the 90s in general, A LOT.
Vancouver in the house, love my hometown.
I'm 45 and yes, I loved this. Still do. Ah, the 90s. The only era where some cute Canadian dude could sound like Billy Corgan but worse, and create great songs.
I am a 90s kid (Jan 1990) who only listens to 90s music and artists, and I have never heard of this song or this band before.
Love Our Lady Peace! Finally saw them in concert a couple weeks ago with Live and Bush. I'd been wanting to see all three bands since I was about 15, so it really meant a lot to me.
Wow I used to record this song before in my radio cassette tapes and been listening to this until high school and I swear this is the first time I actually seen the music video, turns back the clock.
Man, 90s hit songs really rocks!
90s was the golden age. now it all sux
Funny, I've been an OLP fan for years and was just wondering how it is that I've never seen this video either when I came across your comment....from 3 years ago.
I used to do the same thing a lot of people did back then. No iTunes or iPhones but dam good times and we were happy without all that stuff
Raine's voice is just the best ever ❤️ The whole band is perfect really
Gem 9 out of 10 banger. Very underrated, under-known 90s song.
I am 57 years old and I still love this music. Classic album. The 90's were the last best decade for music.
I'm a 17 year old girl who loves this band. And this song. I need to see them live, I think they're amazing.
You must be 27 now?
@@Roamm123 I am! Still love this song and I've seen Our Lady Peace perform live twice now. :)
@@PressCtrlG This came out when I was a teenager as well I thinks it's nice when a experience can be shared across multiple generations
I've seen them and YES, THEY ARE AMAZING 👏 😍 ❤️
@@PressCtrlG wow....a 10 yr old commenter coming back to reply.
Lol. I'm just here to listen while I clean cause I put this on my y.t. play list like 13 yrs.ago.
Ur original original comment reminded me of being 17. They were my fav.band. if I was hvng a meltdown or needed to be calm, I'd have to put this on.
A lot of crazy stuff happened in high school with this as the soundtrack (for whatever reason). Lol.
Nice to meet u ❤
This song is about having a loved one who is addicted to something. Its at that very specific point in an addiction when its clear that a problem exists, but before people realize the extent of it. When it started, people thought it was funny, you were the life of the party, but now no one is laughing, and and at first your love ones think maybe you just need a friend, or that you just need some sleep, but ultimately they realize all they can do is stand around and watch you drown.
Yup sounds like my life right about now
Damn! I’d never given it much thought but was just getting ready to google its meaning so thanks for this.
I think I always chalked it up to a relationship that either just ended or is toxic and the singer has seen her toxic behavior enough so he’s just like “ok yeah whatever” lol
Our Lady Peace was, and continues to be, one of my favorite bands! I am so glad that I can enjoy something in my late 30s that I enjoyed as much in high school. Plus, Raine’s eyes are absolutely beautiful!
I'm 41, been listening to the 1990s for a week straight.....was magical.....so many great movies and music packed into a decade
Im 44 brother me too.
Saw this music video then convinced my dad to get me this CD. I was in 5th grade. 35 now and still bumping all music from 50s to 90s; I truly don’t care about new music at all. Peace to all readers.
I've always loved the backing harmony vocals when he sings "as CLUMSY as you've been, there's no one laughing!". Something about that line chokes me up
i was 16 when this cd came out. i get flooded with memories and feelings. now that i am 32 it feels like a lifetime ago. crazy to think how heavy in rotation this was on everyones radio station, and everyones favorite music video channel MuchMusic... which doesn't show too much music videos anymore. regardless, i got to this via Odd's I could be your man video, and it was a whirlwind of memories along the way. fun to read some of your comments, makes you realize the impact music has on all of us.
I was 11 and it does feel like a lifetime ago, lots of nostalgia attached to this song and band. Great music; so cool that you could once hear songs like this on the radio!
29 now was in 6th grade wow this takes me back
I'm only 17, I met this song a little while and when I hear it I feel like I was being teenager at that time .. weird but great feeling!
Brenda Ribeiro You're never too young to enjoy good music from the past!
Tasha Schneider you right :)
Music isn’t made like this anymore. Take me baaack.
I forgot how much I liked this band. So much good music in the 90's it's easy to lose track.
so. I'm 36. and this song still gives me goosebumps.
my brother did a project in jr high, and he used this this song as a skit. during the break at the end. he was shot and died. and wanted the rest to play, but I guess the teacher didnt see that as fit.
thank you 90s. or just good music!
you're amazing guys.
People have said and I agree that it might be a song about someone dealing with depression maybe self harm. This is one of my favorite songs though. Canada has produced a lot of amazing bands.
+Kevin James Well no shit thats what the song is about lol
+doctordrizzay I heard that's just a legend
It's about drug addiction.
go Canada
to me its about looking out for numero uno, knowing your frends, and deciding who is worth your energy. which is important if you're a victim of your own descrtuctive habits. cool how poetry can mean so many different things whether the writer intended it or not
I was a lifeguard in Saskatoon when this song came out...as a joke we sang the "I'll be waving my hand" part to add variety to our day🫣
That's hilarious
My dad just remembered these guys and sent me some of their songs, this is the first one I'm listening to, so far i like it!
Your dad sounds cool!
I was at work and one of the cooks was listening to music. She was playing this song and it almost brought me to tears but I also felt happy.
Despite his vocals not being very talented, I have ALWAYS loved his voice! I used to call him “that stoned guy” cuz for some reason I feel like his voice sounds like he’s high af especially at the end
J'ai 37 ans et j'adore toujours autant cette chanson 2024❤
Our Lady Peace has the most beautiful lyrics ever!
I was born in 88, but I vividly remember hearing OLP, soundgarden, smashing pumpkins and wu-tang clan when I was very young (my mom was a huge grunge fan). The grunge made me and rap molded my perspectives of other cultures.
One of my favourite songs of the 90's.
SFO14 mee too
I was listening to this song when my nan passed away recently on March 24th, 2021. This song brought tears to my eyes...I felt so alone 😔😔
Our lady peace, I Mother Earth , smashing pumpkins, nirvana , pearl jam etc We need that music back again ! Now my kids are growing up to …..what we have now :(
This is honestly a really beautiful song. I grew up with it, but only just realized the meaning of it as I listened to it today after kinda forgetting about it a while. It's so moving and lovely. We need more of this!
Canadian music had so much truth and emotion to it, I think more people should take time to listen to it
❤
Amen
Canada's superior education system probably had something to do with that. (I'm an American, for the record.)
Are you like a teacher or something?
Might want to have another look.
Keshia K
And to think bands with talent like this were played on the radio at one time.
Yeah, 90's might have been the best decade for good music that also managed commercial success. The abundance of it too
He has dreamy eyes, sings like an angel
I saw them in 98 with eve 6 and 3rd eye bind in Savannah. I had just turned 13. I'm forever grateful i had parents who introduced me to amazing music. While their music is Allman Bros band, the dead, phish, etc. They let us go to our choice, and we ended up just like them... hippies at the heart!! But I've seen a great mix of live shows and I have loved EVERY SINGLE ONE! I still enjoy the hell outta my old music which also consists of country and rap, but today's music. ... ughhhhh haven't heard a good popular song for years!!
classic song. i remember listening to this in middle school long with matchbox 20 & third eye blind
melahuak our lady peace ,mathbox 20, nirvana, green day, oasis, third eye blind, blind melon, nine inch nails, sublime, korn... fak! what happened to the 90s? :'(
Don't forget RATM, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains
You gotta keep em separated!
You should check out Tabitha's Secret if like MB20. Was Rob, Brian and Paul's previous band
@allison muszynski Haha, yes! Such good memories!. Yeah music today is just brutal, I don't know any of todays music, thankfully!.. lol. I wish they would bring back Much Music... Speakers Corner was awesome.
You don’t know what it’s like missing a time you barely experienced.
I've heard the song before, but never saw the video, Stingray Retro is playing all Canadian music for Canada day..
We're halfway through 2021 and I'm still listening. Anyone?
The fact that there is no modern metalcore cover of this is a sad state of affairs. It would be perfect.
Listening to this after work, what a masterpiece❤ missing the 90s😢
this song deserves way more views then it has
We used to joke about Raine and Alanis Morrisette having a kid. Could you imagine the I-e-I-hi's that kid could belt out?!?! Man, I love this Canadian Gem of a band!
Lol 90s was a weird but cool time
I have never been a fan of Our Lady Peace but this song came on after a fairly dramatic episode with my 14 year old Autistic son and had me balling my eyes out 💖
Our Lady Peace will always hold a special spot within my soul as they were the first of many, many bands that I saw live. I was 15 and it was a free outdoor concert held on a local college campus. It was an annual festival called "Quadmania". The rest of the bookings were pretty terrible but the headliner was usually a good band that had past their peak. This particular show was in 2001 and it was my first time crowd surfing, among other things. I remember how much fun that day was and now being to hundreds of concerts, that one will always be special because it started my foray into going to as many shows as possible. I miss those days oh so much.
This was the first song I ever listened to by OLP turned me in to a fan for life.
CreepyPuppyPasta So true!!! I'm pretty sure I heard it off the "I know what you did last summer" soundtrack. The entire Clumsy album was fabulous!
CreepyPuppyPasta same here
CreepyPuppyPasta Yes! A friend and I used to fight over a sampler cd because of this song. 😂😂😂
This song reminds me of a lost friend that I'll never see again. The memories are bittersweet. Miss you MCM 😞
From the Lead singer Raine Maida:
"There's a connection between the song 'Clumsy' and it being the title of the album. There's a line in the song that says: 'I'll be waving my hand/watching you drown/watching you scream', it's about seeing something but not seeing it for what it really is. It's about decisions. That image of 'waving your hand/watching you drown,' is about seeing someone in the water, they're waving at you, and you're just waving back, not realizing that they're drowning. Or you think they're drowning, but they're just waving at you. It's those weird situations where you just take something at face value, but you can be so wrong. You have to look deeper and question things. I think it's something that too many people don't do these days. We're so inundated with the f--king media, and you just believe it. How many times, not just to focus on us, have we read an interview or an article where we've been completely misquoted? We're just some small band, when you think about some of the major players and you really have to question how true it all is."
Well said good soul! 🦍 we are waking up.... slowly but surely! 🌎☮️🦋🐢🐝🚣♀️❤️
Thank you Raine☮️☯️💜 seattlerockrgrrrl ☔🖤
Genius saw it coming - more relevant nowadays than ever!
That's why I watch FOX News, not mainstream media!
I always looked at it like someone drowning in addiction or depression, guess that's just bc I linked lyrics with own experiences. thankd
90’s Quality Unmatched.
Oh man.. I just realized how much time has passed.. We really did grow old..
This band doesn't get enough credit. Age of spiritual machines is transcendent.
The band got plenty of credit 20 years ago. You missed it.
Just saw OLP and IME in Ottawa with my best friend since grade 9. We grew up to those bands. I have had OLP in my head for 4 days now!
zombiecrush I saw them last night in Halifax and they were amazing!
Wasn't it an amazing performance? They didn't miss a beat. It was just like being back in time. I loved how everyone there was in their 30s, not on their phones, and totally in the moment. It was such a great experience.
Douglas Nowland it was Tim Hortons for us!! ;) growing up pre-2000 was the best!!!
2021 and I appreciate this so much more now
Our Lady Peace never fails to bring us back down from some painful times.
I used to listen to this song over and over again. This is the first time I've heard it in over 20 years. It hasn't lost its charm.
band is still around and making music, haven't listen to any of their new stuff tho
Can I please GO BACK NOW! Go back to this kind of music and not a care in the world.
kids these days will never know how hard it was growing up, and simple songs like this kept us away from the dark, for us to live a nother day
Some would argue it's just as hard but with different obstacles and, at least for me, less original music. Or maybe it just resonates less for me than the our caregiver generation. Yeah, they'll be taking care of us😮
When I was young I honestly thought this was a song about guy waving at his friend who was drowning...like "bye, bye" waving not like "take my hand if you want to live" waving.
That's EXACTLY what it means. Watching and waving as one drowns. Now that's a sad story if I've ever heard one.
Nah I think he meant it as waving bye cuz the friend isnt seeking help for the domestic violence he is suffering through. So the singer cant help him if he doesnt know what’s really going on with the friend.
This band is one of the edgiest of the mid-late nineties. And they still rock!
This is a good song I had completely forgotten about.
