Heard this the day it came out 1974? in Schenectady NY with friends and we were so hing and we have never been the same ever again. Best band ever in my life time. I am so happy you love them. Thank you for the post
In my opinion there no Pop groups today that can musically hold a candle to Steely Dan. Sadly I think most modern music (Hip Hop included) have simply lost the plot. I heard a session singer said recently, most of the Pop music after 1975 I tend to loose interest in. I find there is so much more music quality in the old stuff, I'm afraid the new stuff is boring. 😊🏴👍
What we would define as pop disappeared after the mega eras of Prince and Michael Jackson. Don't forget; even with all that machinery, bands STILL had to be able to play an instrument and compose something that would catch the ear. Now, technology IS the instrument.
Disagree. It's out there. Also it depends on how you define pop. You can't compare contemporary bands based on records sold, as one would for a group like Steely Dan. Not to take away from your point though. SD was one of a kind. Try listening to Vulfpeck. Sold out Madison Square garden, so, you know, at least a little popular. . Definitely quirkier and less "pop" than SD but so funky. Start with the EP Mit Peck.
The other day I heard a run-down of the top 20 in 1968, and every Artist was a Legend. Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, the Beach Boys etc. With all due respect to the current chart toppers, I don't think anybody will be listening to their music in 50 years time. Do you? 😊🏴👍
Although totally different to Steely Dan, Radiohead are well worth listening to. To begin with, you may find their music a bit hard to accept but persevere and you will come to appreciate them. Thom Yorke's lyrics are clever and well considered and can be quite engrossing and their music can often be quite mesmerising.

My absolute favorite band, and I'm a middle aged, white punk rock/rock and roll kid. I love watching your vids because it reminds me of my early exposure to these tunes, but from the viewpoint of many of my black brothers here in Detroit who came from a soul/funk/r&b/blues background before we all met in the music scene. My Mom and Dad listened to EVERYTHING, and my first concert was Stevie Wonder, followed by Earth, Wind and Fire. Keep keepin' on. Thanks for a great distraction from the stress.
Watching your reaction to the music that was created before you were conceived is priceless! It brings tears of joy to my eyes to see your expressions of wonderment at the sounds that have been created by the musicians in my lifetime. About a year before Walter Becker died, I saw Steely Dan in Traverse City Michigan. They played songs from all their albums and sounded live just like they sound on recordings. They played for over 2 hours. The back-up singers were wonderful. If I am on a desert island and can only listen to one group, it will be Steely Dan. Donald Fagen is from another planet.

Jim Gordon on drums. One of the highest desired session drummers and musician from the 1960's through the 70's. On hundreds and hundreds of recordings. Unfortunately those high demands, meant constant going going going. Being the 70's what kept you going???......Lots and lots of Peruvian Marching Powder. Lead to him hearing voices in his head. He bludgeon his 72 year old mother with a hammer in 1983. Decades old news to me, but new to the masses here. Killer killer drummer, and multi-instrumentalist. He wrote the piano part for Layla.

The background vocals were augmented by Timothy B. Schmit Of the Eagles and Poco
Wasn't Michael MacDonald singing backup on alot of Steely Dan?
@@rosslynemrys5829 Michael McDonald didn't sing on a Steely Dan album until 1975's "Katy Lied," following his stint as backing vocalist and keyboard player on their 1974 "Pretzel Logic Tour."
Steely Dan music, extraordinary! their melodic chord progressions - second to none!
Yeees! Another Steely Dan reaction! You should do Haitian Divorce, Green Earrings, The Fez, Don’t Take Me Alive, Fire In The Hole, The Boston Rag, and King Of The World. There are plenty of others
Fire In The Hole. Overlooked gem from 1st album.
BOSTON RAG.
Badhisattva!
Luke Thompson Good ones
so glad you are loving Steely Dan! looking forward to seeing you get to Talking Heads, The Clash, The Police, Roxy Music, The Cars, Bob Seger keep going! Cheers!
Try Bodisatva studio version. One of my favorites.
My fav Steely Dan song and I love them all.... Seen them in concert three times. Just amazing music. "where did you get those shoes"!
"Groovy" is exactly the right word for Steely Dan.
Jamel! I've been watching more of your videos lately, I binged a bunch of them last night; man, you are awesome. Just pure joy watching you enjoying this stuff. Rock on. These are the kinds of connections we need these days.
Do "Home At Last" by Steely Dan. Off of their AJA album.
Arguably their finest moment, Homer Greek mythology and what a drum sound.
Jamal would LOVE that beat/groove!!
@@fastladyuk The "behind the scenes" they did has a great quote from Donald, in his usual dry irony: "Y'know we thought we'd just write a little blues about Odysseus..."
It's absolutely about time travel. I love that you caught it that early. And love your energy and all your reactions. Keep great music alive, and God bless.
This song is from my favorite three Dan albums - Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied and Aja. Pretzel Logic, twisted logic. perfect.
I enjoy watching every video you make, but it particularly warmed my heart to hear your comments about Steely Dan, this song in particular. Love listening with you, it's like hearing it again for first time. Much love
Oh yeah ...Jamel ain’t done with the Dan!!! Love the reaction and your appreciation for this band. Gotta do Cousin Dupree
Night by Night is the second track off this album. It’s a must listen!
The bass in that song is absolutely beautiful
Called Pretzel Logic for a reason. Words are wonderful, harmonic jibberish!
Glad you made it to this one, knew you would dig it, do Don't Take Me Alive next, enjoy
I LOVE to see Jamel's reaction to music I love that he's never heard! Glad your catching up!
Check out Angry Eyes by Loggins and Messina!!!!! You will LOVE the GROOVE!
Watching your reaction to the music that was created before you were conceived is priceless! It brings tears of joy to my eyes to see your expressions of wonderment at the sounds that have been created by the musicians in my lifetime. Music is truly transformative and your discovery and commentary is heartwarming.
I tell you Captain Jamel "daddy dont live in that new york city no more" take us on that voyage.
Seriously dude, I wanna watch him FEEEL that.
I wanted to go to that Steely Dan concert buy my husband wasnt so interested then Walter Becker died and I felt so sad i missed seeing them live
Steely Dan:
Home At Last
I Got the News
Any World I'm Welcome To
Dr. Wu
The Fez
Green Earrings
Great choices, especially Dr. Wu and Home at Last, both contenders for the best songs from the best band.
Steely Dan have been in my top 5 rotation since 2006 when they were at North Sea Jazz Festival. Sometimes I listen to them for several weeks straight. 15 years and counting
You should also react to “i got the news,” another really bumpin cut
SauceDevourer second that
Yeesssss
Yeah baby. The Blues/Jazz/Rock of Steely Dan.
Is it Blues?, Is it Jazz?, Is it Rock?..........And then your head explodes.
Damn, I been listening to these guys since the '70s.
Life is good.
You should dedicate one of your reactions to Steely Dan's Aja album. The whole album. That would be fun.
He already did!!!
@@sueprator9314 he did? From beginning to end? In one sitting? I don't recall that one. I must have missed it. Guess I'll go search for it.
My favorite band ever. Hands down they were true musicians. Awesome vocals and lyrics.
Jamel...I am in love with you...YEAH I SAID IT...you bring me so much joy with these reactions...I agree...these guys are so special.
Yea, what he said!!❤️😘
Yes sir😀👍🏼✌🏼👏🏻
David Goldberg yeah Jamel makes my days
Jim Gordon on drums. One of the highest desired session drummers and musician from the 1960's through the 70's. On hundreds and hundreds of recordings. Unfortunately those high demands, meant constant going going going. Being the 70's what kept you going???......Lots and lots of Peruvian Marching Powder. Lead to him hearing voices in his head. He bludgeon his 72 year old mother with a hammer in 1983. Decades old news to me, but new to the masses here. Killer killer drummer, and multi-instrumentalist. He wrote the piano part for Layla.
Jim Gordon did not write the piano part from Layla. He was credited for that, but actually stole it from Rita Coolidge.
Try War - "Low Rider." An awesome groove.
I have that song on 8 track, cassette, LP and mpeg lol. The 8 track doesn’t work anymore but I just can’t throw it away. I used to roll in my 70 Camero with the windows down and Low Rider blasting, great song.
"Oh yeah"
Slapbak's cover is good too.
War’s “All Day Music?” Mellow feel good music defined!
You'll love this .. my Dad , an amateur jazz drummer, turned me onto Steely Dan back when they came out !
This band is so talented. We really felt like we had sophisticated taste in music. Turns out, we were right.
Holy 💩! So many of these Steely Dan tunes you have been reacting to are known to me, just not the titles. I’m 51 years old and consider myself a very knowledgeable rocker. Thanks for opening my eyes to a missing chapter! ✌️
" You must be jokin' son, where did you get those shoes!"
Truly one of the best lines ever .mr mike does it great live
This is one of Steely Dan's best tunes... smoothest of the smooth jazz. 2nd is Steely Dan's "Showbiz Kids."
Jamel, we could tell the effect this band was having on you from the start. Funny thing is, we’ve all been there. I’m loving your journey.
You can "ramble" with us anytime, Jamel!!! One of the things that made the 60's and 70's such an amazing time to "grow up" was the wide variety (something for EVERY MOOD you could have!!) of music that was available. Thank you for allowing us to "time travel" with you ❤❤❤
"There are only two kinds of music, good music and the other kind." Duke Ellington
I love Steely Dan so it's nice to see him showing the love.
"is this about time travel ?"
I'm a Dan fan since they started, and it took me years to work that out !
The line 'I stepped up on the platform' - the platform is supposed to be part of some kind of time transporter.
Steely Dan is one of those Very few bands if you were on an island what one bands music would you want to hear forever...they never get old..
"I stepped-up to the platform
The man gave me the news:
He said: "You must be joking, son.
Where DID you get those shoes?...."
💜💜💜💜🔥🔥🤘🤘
Steely Dan has turned into one of my favorite bands over these past few months After hearing my parents listening to them and talking about them a lot I’ve started listening out of curiosity and was hooked
Hey Jamel, if really want to get those shoulders “a grooving “ try out Chain Lightning from the album Katy Lied. Fagen & Becker were brilliant!!!
First started listening to Steely Dan in the early 80's and never looked back.
The Royal Scam please
I like that modern technology is allowing another generation to experience great classic rock/pop. Steely Dan is one of my favorites.
I can’t help but play air drums during the chorus.
Mood, plays into it a lot. There is a time and place for all music.
Your love of great music shines forth. Please keep doing what you're doing and bringing great joy to us all...
P.s you sure are a sweetie . Love watching your sincere reactions and commentary , AND get your swerve on!🤓🎶🎧
I've always loved Steely Dan. One of my favorite bands. They truly stand alone.
Right on dude. While you're doing Steely Dan, you've gotta hear "Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More." It's got some heavy lyrics and is FAWNKY as hell.
I just suggested Doctor Wu -my fave from the Katy Lied album. DDLITNYCNM would have been my 2nd choice & then Chain Lightning.
Steely Dan is my all time favorite band. I'm so glad you are digging them.
PLEASE DO "GREEN EARRINGS" off of their album 'The Royal Scam'!
I am a devotee so yes, my fav of all time...
💯%
Maybe my favorite groove by them. The Chuck Rainey/ Bernard Purdie bass/drum combo at their best!!!
You want harmonies ? Do some Crosby , Stills and Nash Southern Cross , Wooden Ships and Teach your Children
One of the most under rated bands ever, they mix it all up....glad you feel that connection!
