Ohhhh, dude. Can never go wrong with Steely Dan. No other band like them. Such talent and creativity. They definitely lean into jazz, especially going back to Brubeck, et al. The chord progressions are complex. Also, I think it usually gets lost on people that you can always understand the lyrics. Thank you, Polo!
Steely Dan it it’s own musical genre. Not blues. Not rock. It’s Steely fusion. Incredible band and story. Mostly no touring. Using different session musicians. Dinald Fagan and Walter Becker.
Steely Dan is some of the most advanced listening ever seen on this channel. Most people don’t get it. It’s filled with jazz chording, odd time signatures, instrumentation and harmonies. It’s one-of-a-kind. They have more of a nerdy cultish following. But there’s no denying their greatness. It may just take a few weeks listening before it kinda sinks in. Legends for sure
Try “Do It Again”, “Reeling in the Years”, “Don’t Take Me Alive”, “Kid Charlemagne”, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”, “My Old School” …. Many, many great tracks.
Steely Dan has an incredible catalog and variety in their styles. I was a huge fan of their music, but many of my friends didn't get them. That was back in the late '70's and early '80's. Given what you've listened to so far, I think "Kid Charlemagne" would be a good reaction. Lots of funky instrumentation and creative lyrics. As usual, thanks for the honest reactions, they're so refreshing.
I so agree! The Royal Scam album was my favorite! From "Kid Charlemagne", "Haitian Divorce" and ending with its title song, "The Royal Scam" Its really telling a whole sordid almost seedy story that takes you on a journey! Love Steely Dan! 🤗
Steely Dan was genre all their own. I don't have any of their music on my playlist. I keep their stuff in a separate unique mix because when I want to listen to them, I want to hear a whole LP. usually.
The wonderful guitar solo is by the late, great Walter Becker. Co-founder of The Dan. The backing vocals are by Poco & The Eagles member Timothy B. Schmitt. One of my favorites by them. Wished you liked it a bit more, but we've all got our tastes.
To each his own, Polo. At my age (67), I don’t think I have many contemporaries who just don’t like Steely Dan. They can’t be pigeonholed into a genre.
I stepped up on the platform The man gave me the news He said, you must be joking son Where did you get those shoes? Iconic line, iconic song, love their sound.
Great lines, it's my favourite Steely Dan song, not everybody's choice of course, every Steely Dan song is probably someone's favourite, but just something about the quirkiness of the lyrics really appeals. Music from the 70's was absolutely phenomenal but.......Those Days are gone forever, over a long time ago, Oh Yeah.
Since you’ll typically get the same 10 or so songs requested by people who want you to listen to Steely Dan, I’ll recommend some other fantastic, lesser requested songs: Caves of Altamira, Chain Lightning, Only a Fool Would Say That, Your Gold Teeth, Glamour Profession, Gaslighting Abbie, Lunch With Gina, Godwhacker, Almost Gothic, Negative Girl, Night by Night, Green Earrings (banger), and Home at Last. Also the rendition of Reeling in the Years from the Alive in America album. They also have two insane unreleased songs: The Bear, and the Second Arrangement. Btw, Donald Fagen has some amazing solo stuff that Becker helped him with- most of which is barely indistinguishable from Steely Dan.
Isnt it frustrating when reading comments, it's nearly always the well known 'hits' or the better known songs people suggest. Most of my favourite songs from so many artists are the lesser known 'deep cuts' Anyway I'd just like to add a few more of my own personal favourite SD tunes........ I Got the News, Razor Boy, Everything You Did, Brooklyn, With a Gun, Through With Buzz, Rose Darling and Cousin Dupree.
I saw SD in a small club in 1974 for 2 nights. Every set they played Pretzel and I tell you, with 2 drummers, Porcaro and Hodder, plus Micheal Mcdonald singing the break, same song but more raw. Hear for yourself on UA-cam, Live at the Record Plant or at the Sopwith Camel in Glendale. That's where I was, Jeff Porcaro was unbelievable.
At the time, Steely Dan changed music. A superbly produced sound, excellent musicianship, and some catchy tunes. A mostly creative version of blues. Changed how we listened to music.
Yeah, probably should start with something they did live on The Midnight Special Channel on UA-cam like "Reelin' in the Years". Pretzel Logic would've been perfect for a deeper dive at a later time.😊
This was my first listen also. I have always admired Steely Dan in how they always pulled together the top musicians for their songs and albums, but I have mostly only listened to their hits on the radio. Deacon Blues, Do it Again, Reelin' in the Years. I think Do it Again has been my favorite.
Please, don't give up on this group.... They're the Swiss Army knife of bands, a different blade for any occasion. Some of their blades are the sharpest in the drawer. Many are unique to them alone. And of course occasionally you open a cork screw. Trust us, they're worth the effort. Like any band, start with the hits and dive deep from there.
Steely Dan is one of my top 10 bands! I used to listen over and over to them in the 70's as well as now that I am older! Their older albums are really good! I loved the combo of the music, rich with rock and jazz overtones, haunting and smart lyrics and then Donald Fagans unique voice! Just like with Bowie, Freddy Mercury and even Elvis the vocals are unmistakable! The rhythm section is very recognizable too. I have always loved bands or musicians that have the quality of story telling and "Katy Lied", "Countdown to Ecstasy" and especially "The Royal Scam" are in my opinion the best! Every single song in The Royal Scam album is amazing! Check it out! "Kid Charlemangne" is a great song as is, "The Royal Scam"! The entire record tells a story and you will get addicted to the album! 🤗
Steely Dan are absolutely in my top 10 bands. In fact like many other artists/bands l enjoy their music more than ever these days. I think l appreciate more now just how wonderful the music from that phenomenal era really is. And yes The Royal Scam is indeed a great album, my second favourite after Pretzel Logic, Caves of Altamira and the title track a couple of real favourites.
They are highly intelligent people & formed their band in college. They formed a band because they loved jazz and they loved the blues so they combined them.
Regarding this song, they started with the outline of a classic 12 bar blues, but the form is too constricting for their musical proclivities, so there are more than 12 bars per stanza, and there are way more than the usual 3 or 4 chords. It's a brilliant song, one of many in their catalog. I'd recommend listening to the following Steely Dan songs: "Haitian Divorce," "Kid Charlemagne," "Home at Last," "Rikki Don't Lose that Number," "Reeling in the Years," "Jack of Speed," "King of the World," "Dirty Work," and "The Things I Miss the Most."
I dont think SD was ever very concerned with genre. They were musicians who loved music, and would use whatever idioms would serve their purpose. It's why I have always loved them. The refused to be limited. Well trained musicians themselves, they had a vision for what they wanted, and used whatever talent was available, and whatever technology was available to achieve it. True artist. Earlier than most.
SD is probably one of the most influential bands of all time. Lead by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker the rest of the band was mostly the top studio session musicians of the time.Fagan was "infamous" for having multiple musicians come in to play parts, then he would pick the best one. he might use 20 or 30+ tracks to pick from, he was a perfectionist and the results show it. There is no tighter band. Their music is very complicated in the timing, progressions and cords. If you get a chance give Deacon Blues a try or Hey nineteen. ua-cam.com/video/ICK6e9WK2A8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/earDfJM4guQ/v-deo.html
You’d go nuts for their jazzier and funkier later stuff from Aja and Gaucho. Tight and clean. They are one of the most sampled bands by hip hop artists. You’ll see why. Black Cow - so good Peter Gunn had to use it for Uptown.
This is one of my top five favorite Steely Dan songs. Black Cow is my #1. You should check it out. My favorite group! And you’re right. They make music for grownups! Always impeccable.
I listen to so many genres and so many decades of music, yet Steely Dan is my all-time favorite duo/band (studio musicians) of all time. Intelligent, sometimes snarky lyrics, bluesy, jazzy R&B sound, pristine production; perfection. SO much more, Polo! Jack Of Speed, Caves of Altamira, The Royal Scam, Don’t Take Me Alive, Peg, Josie, FM, Kid Charlemagne, Do It Again, Deacon Blues, Black Cow, SO much more that it’s ridiculous ❤❤❤❤
Please, Give them another chance. Some of my favorites: FM; My Old School; Time Out of Mind; Kid Charlemagne; Black Cow…. Just so many. SD is a band “that blended elements of rock, jazz, Latin music, R&B, blues and sophisticated studio production with cryptic and ironic lyrics.”~Wickipedia
No need to break it down. It's amazing art that is magic in the way it works. Love this song and ALL Steeley Dan. Seen them live more time than I can count. Heck, we even had a Rottweiler named Aja. One hell of a great lady...did her namesake justice.
I would like to add a comment polo, and I was wondering if you could check out a group called war what a band and a song called slipping into darkness. They also play the song spill the Wine featuring Eric Burton, the one you liked from House of the rising Sun, if you have a chance give that a try I’m pretty sure you’re gonna like it because there isn’t anything that war doesn’t play that’s good just my opinion just saying thank you so much Polo. I just think you are in a class all by yourself. There’s no one out there like you.
Their song Third World Man has stuck with me. It’s from their Gaucho album. It’s about a guy with PTSD. It’s hauntingly simple and beautiful at the same time.
I guess this is what they call a "fusion" Band. It's a mix of Rock, Blues and Jazz. Steely Dan sort of transitions in and out of all of those genres, sometimes within the same song.
Your mention of your grandmother's juke joint reminded me of a roommate I had in college who said to me in a deadpan thick southern drawl on a Friday night ... "You goin' jukin' tonight?" My introduction to southern.
This is definitely one of my favourites Steely Dan songs, but Steely Dan is one of those bands the next song you hear from them you’re gonna say I think that’s my favourite song. only a few groups that do that and they’re definitely. One of them
I was already a dedicated radio kid by Steely Dan’s debut on the airwaves, so their music is formative to me, inspires some of what I reach for in my own compositions. Boomer name is Donna and certainly not old enough to be your grandmother. LOL. Guess you had to be there when their music was at its peak. Loved all of the songs they played (Reelin' in the Years) and it brings back loads of memories for me. One of my top 5 bands.
Steely Dan is one of a kind. Definitely in my top ten favorite band list. I'm gonna suggest their song Josie. Time Out of Mind is another good one. Way too many great songs to list.
