Have you listened to his collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers (whom I love as obviously Jackson respects deeply). Check out their version of her song Kyoto. His voice is as beautiful as ever-it actually got better with age…
“I’m gonna find myself a girl who can show me what laughter means, and we’ll fill in the missing colours of each other’s paint by number dreams”. A line that feels like something I’ve experienced. Beautifully written.
@@brianmullins5824 Lyrics are interpreted differently by everyone, so I don’t know where they came from in JB’s life, but for me, the part about laughter refers back to a time where I was just just not enjoying life with another person, and the fill in the missing colours means finding someone where we can enhance each other’s lives.
This artist has touched me more than anyone else I can think of. His lyrics rip at your ❤and soul at the exact same time. I have like many other people I'm sure have taken his heart felt pain and shared that with all of us. When I die, I would hope by some miracle that somehow, someway JB would know how much he has meant to me for DECADES!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jackson has been my favorite artist since i first heard his music. I think i was 17, now 67. His songwriting, his wonderful voice, as well as piano/guitar playing abilities can make me feel so many different emotions. I also think of him as genius, but also a great humanitarian. Through his songs we can see from a very early age he seemed to be way before his time.
This is true brilliance. Back when musicians wrote, played, and sang their own songs that they put so much into creating them. Today's "musicians" should learn from these true artists of yesteryear. Greatness.
A timeless talent! I discovered his music when I was 16 and I would listen to his music via 8 track in my boyfriends car. The 70’s were a great time to be a teenager discovering the world through the brilliant music of Jackson Browne. I played his music for my children in the 90’s and they loved it as much as I do. And now , in my 60’s we are all still loving his music. His music is tradition in our home.
Sounds like my dad and our family. My dad was uprooted from Illinois to Arizona when he was a teenager in the 70s, he would always listen to Jackson’s records at his neighbors house who was a receptionist for a dr down here and Jackson actually came in to be seen the day of a concert. The lady recognized him/his name from my dads albums and he gave her backstage passes for my dad who then got to meet Jackson. We have three generations of people in my house who love his music.

And I’m absolutely broken hearted as David Lindley just passed away. Such an amazing talent, added sooo much to Jackson’s work and, to have seen them perform together-timeless memories.
He’s absolutely gorgeous love his shiny soft dark hair, such a talented storyteller a major crush. Have loved Jackson’s music ever since “Doctor My Eyes” days. So many messages here in this song. I spent a lifetime working 10 hour days without vacation doing something that others expected of me. I made it to the top but after 25 years I realized that it was not my dream. It was my father’s dream. I quit and lost important relationships in the process but after all these many years I have learned an important lesson. Happiness is a function of living your own dream not someone else’s.
One of the most beautiful voices ever, one of the best singer/songwriters ever and although I'm a straight hetero man, Jackson to me is one of the most beautiful man who has ever walked this earth!!!
A few things about this track. While it was written in the 70's, Most of us are The Pretender. Most of us still struggle for the legal tender to this day. My uncle (who I was essentially named after save for my middle name) was an enormous Jackson Browne fan, bought every album, saw him live every chance he got. He unfortunately passed away in November 2004 and for many reasons, I wish he was still physically here so my family (wife & 3 kids) could've met them. He used to play every album up to Lawyers In Love incessantly on his turntable when I was a wee lad. He even bought me not only the Somebody's Baby 45 but also the Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack simply because he knew I dug JB. This album, Running On Empty & Hold Out always remind me of him and all the positive memories I have of my uncle. Fast forward to September 2018, my now 13 year old son bugs me to buy him a decent turntable. Of course, I got it for him and let him choose what albums he wanted with it on discogs. Those albums were Get The Knack (The Knack), Dog & Butterfly (Heart), Escape (Journey) & Running On Empty (keep in mind, I just told him to go to discogs and add up to 4 records...I had zero input). After the records arrived, he didn't like the long wait, I took him to Record City here in Vegas. He got a better copy of ROE that included the booklet in the sleeve & The Pretender among a few other albums during that visit. I was floored & happy that he was picking awesome stuff. Anyhow, whenever he gets a record, we play it all the way thru of course and when we got to this song, I obviously was very emotional because of the connection with my uncle. He asked why I was crying. I explained why. He gave me a big hug. He has the two JB albums I mentioned plus he recently got a SEALED 1st pressing of Hold Out for $5 Anyhow, this is such a timeless song and will always apply because there's a little bit of The Pretender in all of us no matter who you are.
Been listening to JB for 35 or 40 years I guess. This is my favorite version of this song. It's easy to be idealistic when you're young, and then you wake up one day and you've been doing something that you hate for as long as you can remember, to put food on the table, and take care of your family because that's what men do. I remember when I was young thinking I don't do anything I don't want to do and then one day I realized I do shit I don't want to do all day long. It's the rare individual who can do something they love to do and it pays the bills.
I was introduced, recently, to this song, by a friend that meant a lot to me, but I only knew for a short time, but I;ll always be grateful to her, because his song will be inside me forever.. Thank you, Alana J xxx

A true musical genius!! I've been a fan since 1975. I remember listening to the radio in my car, and hearing Jackson's voice, getting excited he was singing a new song. Music today sucks big green ones.
I'm going to rent myself a house In the shade of the freeway Gonna pack my lunch in the morning And go to work each day And when the evening rolls around I'll go on home and lay my body down And when the morning light comes streaming in I'll get up and do it again, Amen Say it again, Amen I want to know what became of the changes We waited for love to bring Were they only the fitful dreams Of some greater awakening? I've been aware of the time going by They say, in the end, it's the wink of an eye When the morning light comes streaming in You'll get up and do it again, Amen Caught between the longing for love And the struggle for the legal tender Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring And the junk man pounds his fender Where the veterans dream of the fight Fast asleep at the traffic light And the children solemnly wait For the ice cream vendor Out into the cool of the evening Strolls the pretender He knows that all his hopes and dreams Begin and end there ah, the lovers as they run through the night (Leaving nothing) leaving nothing but to choose off and fight And tear at the world with all their might While the ships bearing their dreams Sail out of sight I'm gonna find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each other's paint-by-number dreams And then we'll put our dark glasses on And we'll make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again Get it up again I'm gonna be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender Where the ads take aim and lay their claim To the heart and the soul of the spender And believe in whatever may lie In those things that money can buy Where true love could have been a contender Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender Who started out so young and strong only to surrender Say a prayer for the pretender Are you there for the pretender? Say a prayer for the pretender Are you there for the pretender? Are you prepared for the pretender?
There is a pretender in all of us as we search for our dreams and relevance . Say a prayer for the pretender who started out so young and strong only to surrender ..,
Dear God, I am 66 yrs old and am just now getting this songs true meanings, TY... awesome!!
Late bloomer. Better late than never.

I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
Gonna pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again, Amen
Say it again, Amen
I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening?
I've been aware of the time going by
They say, in the end, it's the wink of an eye
When the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again, Amen
Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junk man pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait
For the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening
Strolls the pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
Begin and end there
ah, the lovers as they run through the night
(Leaving nothing) leaving nothing but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams
Sail out of sight
I'm gonna find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again
I'm gonna be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Where true love could have been a contender
Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender
Who started out so young and strong only to surrender
Say a prayer for the pretender
Are you there for the pretender?
Say a prayer for the pretender
Are you there for the pretender?
Are you prepared for the pretender?

Just... wow!!!
It rarely exists anymore, and the appreciation of it is even more endangered, judging by what I have found the prevailing tastes to be nowadays
