    Little noticed fact, Alan Binet, the scientist who is arguing that synths are dreaming and must be sentient, his voice actor is none other than Robert Picardo, he's been a major stage actor for decades but his most famous role was actually playing the Holographic Doctor on Star Trek Voyager, a character who's entire arc over the 7 seasons was grappling with becoming sentient and then in the later seasons, ACTUALLY fighting for his rights as a sentient being so that his rights could be respected. Its a very fitting cameo for Picardo to play a scientist who was all in on the synth project but has developed misgivings now that hes observing synths experience things that not only were they not designed to experience, but are really only shared by sentient beings who can dream

      Holy crap thats so cool! Can't believe I didn't know that- voyager was a childhood favorite of mine and I was just thinking about the similarities between the star trek theme and institute theme the other day when watching the clip of him and 7 singing Darling Clementine

      that's very interesting, i thought that might be the same voice actor, but i also thought it was Robert who played Nazeen in skyrim as their voices sound very similar lol.
      but the story of Alan Binet is dumb, think about this for a second, his argument for synths dreaming somehow proved by every standard they can measure that synths have souls, that came directly from Alen Binet's character lol.
      bethesda bethesda bethesda.... always writing story arch's that make no logical sense lol.
      like for the whole railroad story i get their reasons for putting this silly notion in the story, but it's still very silly none the less and makes the head of robotics sound like a total moron lol, so it makes you think maybe this is the reason why these synths have this "flawed thought process of free will", and it's so odd nobody else within the institute questions this as this guy Alan has for himself a sex bot synth for himself, it's admitted that this is weird, but nobody questions why he's in the role in the first place and just for some odd reason keeps him there lol.
      i'm surprised the SRB have no clue why their synths want to escape, of course they will say "synths aren't people" and also say "synths don't want anything" they also never connect the dots with Alan benet's delusional opinions and perhaps find some way to replace him with someone who doesn't have these delusions, it's just never a single thought in the story, there is a story to find out about the missing synths and it involving Alan but ultimately involving his son who's been letting them go free and even after his son is banished from the institute, he's still in that role in robotics, one would think he would remove himself, because after all, he was the one who influenced his son to this kind of delusional thinking, but nope, they keep him in that role no matter what.
      just such stupid writing.

      @@TheNinthGeneration1 What's the difference between a vault door and a teleporter? Both serve the same function, both serve as the sole exit point to an underground complex, and both cannot be used freely (unless the Overseer/Director says so). I agree with @Meh. The institute is basically a Vault that wasn't built by VaultTec.

    • @TheNinthGeneration1
      @TheNinthGeneration1 Рік тому +5

      @@asherandai2633 well first off, the vault door is a door that breaks the seal on the shelter, allowing not only people but also air and light to pass in an out of the vault, while a teleported is a lot more selective. There’s also the fact a vault door is shaped like a gear and they use that design to help open the door.
      There’s also the fact that a teleported can activate anywhere, meaning that technically the door is everywhere, it’s just that the other side always leads to the same spot. We exploit that fact when we build our own entrance.
      The Institute is a bunker, a Vault is a subset of a bunker, just as a Ferrari is a kind of car.

    To the vats issue. Ox forgot the fact we can use vats in the beginning well before even picking up the pipboy. Doesnt point to the fact we might be synths but most likely a dev error.

    • @jvazacas
      @jvazacas Рік тому +46

      We are not synths, the vats thing is a Bethesda goof. What would the Institute benefit by making a synth that eventually turned and destroyed them, and in that mission, if we were a synth, why wouldn't Shaun or any other Institute scientist use your recall code to save themselves? Lmao....stupid fan theory

    • @MasterGamerT13
      @MasterGamerT13 Рік тому +11

      The players being able to use VATS in the starting vault prior to picking up the pip boy was likely just a development choice to save time as disabling a mainline feature wouldn't have added anything substantial. The terminal entry was likely added in during the later stages of the development cycle or maybe even with one of the early patch notes when developers realised the implication of their decision on the overall story. Now looking at things from an in-universe view, if we were a synth we likely weren't recalled as doing so would have been entirely pointless. Recal codes just shut down the synth and if the battle for bunker hill mission is an indicator only allow for the issue of basic commands such as 'stay' or 'follow me' with more advanced commands likely being programmed in after reclamation. Finally, if the player was a synth what would the point in their existence, assuming there is one, be? Personally it's my head cannon that initially Shaun made our character in an attempt to develop a new recal subroutine that could be triggered remotely should a synth escape. Having some sort of backup personality trigger within the synth that would compel them to seek out and enter the institute could be a more efficient way of reclaiming escaped synths. As the story unfolds however Shaun comes to the realization that synths are humans and stricken with shame or guilt over his own wrongdoings reprograms his younger synth self to believe that they're your kid in an under baked attempt to do something good for once. Off course this is just my attempt at understanding a poorly written plot line that likely prioritized length and action rather than narrative sense.

    I love the soundtrack you hear when you wonder around the Institute. It's so chill, and has a subtle futuristic vibe. A pretty big departure from the usual ost you hear around the wasteland. Still fits the game well though, cause the Institute is supposed to have that impact when we visit it for the first time. Like it's so new, clean, almost alien-looking, nothing like what we've seen in the wasteland before.

    I'll note about your refering to the theory about the Sole Survivor being a Synth with the Institute's tests with, well, VATS basically without the PipBoy. At the very beginning of the game, once you are able to acquire a gun, and are given a hallway full of Radroaches to use it on, you are given the tutorial for how to use VATS. However, you only acquire your PipBoy at the Vault 111 exit, to open the door.
    So, the Sole Survivor apparently had the ability to use VATS before being given a PipBoy, which is the only distinction between the Sole Survivor's usage of VATS and the Courier's and Lone Wanderer's usage of VATS, both of which are given PipBoys and then have access to it.
    I should say I think that it was merely a design mistake when making the introduction to Fallout 4, and that they Sole Survivor is not a Synth and that it was just a mistake, largely due to in the Institute gameplay, the SS becomes the head of the Institute, which I do not think Father would do, nor do I think others in the Institute would go along with.
    A follow-up piece of evidence is in the Brotherhood's path, they get a load of Institute data, including the DNA codes of escaped Synths, which leads to finding out someone who is unaware they are a Synth. It's not a stretch of thought that the data would also include the DNA codes of other Gen 3 Synths, which would have outed the SS as a Synth if they were one.
    It is a theory that has some merit, but lacks a lasting foundation to stand on imo, which is why I do not believe it is true.

Not to mention, when you listen to Tinker Tom as he hacks the Corsair chip, you see your normal hacking terminal. But he's describing his view as something completely different. Also, it would explain the players' unnatural building abilities

    The very first time I did a playthrough of Fallout 4 I ended up siding with the Institute. I don't quite remember what my thought process was to side with them but it might have been something along the lines of "man this places looks really clean and pretty, I wanna stay here" or "well he's my son so I'll trust him". Yeah I'm pretty simple-minded sometimes...
    Now that I've had time to watch more of your videos, Ox, and listening to you explain why the Institute is bad in general, I do understand why, but I still feel kinda torn for some reason. On one hand I still think that the Institute itself is a beautiful place with brilliant minds that should remain alive, and I like to think that when we become the leader we can change it to actually help the Commonwealth. But on the other, I understand these scientists can be seen as delusional, thinking only for themselves and what they want instead of wanting to help others.
    As the player, I always want to feel like I've done something good, not evil. I honestly have a hard time painting the Institute as purely evil and needs to be purged. I know the sides you can take in Fallout New Vegas are a lot more grey and none are wholly good either.
    It's difficult to explain... In my current playthrough I haven't fully taken a side yet, wanting to explore all options in a single playthrough as much as possible. But I think I might end up either siding with the Institute again because I still find them fascinating, or with the Railroad for the first time because you can do so much with them and get to blow up the Brotherhood of Steel spectacularly, while still also siding with the Minutemen to protect the Commonwealth.

It was design, it was creativity how they present a futuristic world, coupled with a brilliant story and rest was left to audiences imagination: you could choose how it ends with around more than a dozen ending.
