I've been loc'd since 1998, long before there was an option for a stylist or any products. I've gone to a couple of people over the years for haircuts and for a wash. 98% of the time, over the past 23 years, I have taken care of my own hair. There are too many people calling themselves professionals and making the process way too complicated. I use sulfate and paraben free shampoo and no products. Peeps, show yourself and your hair some grace. Get to know your crown, listen to your scalp and hair and respond accordingly.

My loctician does beautiful work , but she definitely has that “one size fits all” mentality. My 4c hair needs very little help loc’ing. It wants to loc so I don’t require super strong retwists. It has been a struggle convincing my loctician that tight retwists are unnecessary and will likely lead to breakage because 4c hair is deceiving. It looks thick and strong, but too much manipulation is detrimental! I’ve actually already noticed a few thin locs in my crown. So, I am taking your advice and learning to care for my own hair. I will still go get styled for special occasions but those visits will be few and far between .

Many locticians have that warped view that neat = tight. That's how the African hair braiders think - if it's not tight and pulling your brains through your scalp then it's not neat. I've had to tell a former loctician several times that she don't need to do all those rotations until it's super tight to my scalp. She would never listen. Now I have breakage all over that I'm dealing with. The breakage didn't show right away either, it took some time. But now here we are - and I NEVER style my locs. I've never had my locs styled by a loctician in the almost three years that I've been locked and I barely put them in a pony tail. That's how I know the breakage is from too tight reties. Be careful with styling too often and too tight, and please DO NOT go back to your loctician! She will have you bald headed sis!!

But I guess it doesn't matter cause with new growth I always have to reastablish the parts. I put a lot of mask on my hair with ginger, Clove, ashwagandha lately even though it's great for the immune system the dollar store has it so I don't have to order it online praise the Lord, but I also sprinkle chebe in my hair oils and conditioner,Ambunu is jelly and so is flax seed so I boil them together... Like but what I meant to say is I've had loccs fall out and it doesn't even ... Idk how to explain it we have a lot of hair like sure it's thick and may not do what you want it too by dang

I grew up getting my hair done at home, for the most part. My mom washed and pressed my hair so damn straight, folks thought I had a perm until I sweat it out. I started my locs almost 20 years ago. My sister helped me with that. I’ve been doing my own hair for all but maybe, 3 months when I went to a lady that would schedule me in like a regular appointment, would wash my hair, start retesting, the overlapped appointment would come in, she’d set me aside, hair soaked, dripping down my back and on top of that, she’d twist my hair hella tight and pull my hair out of my scalp when she came across a tangle. Needless to say, I went back to doing my own hair. I’ve also switched up and started making my own gels with aloe or flax seeds and use oils for scalp moisture as well. Having a good loctician is great if you can find one, but I prefer doing my own.

I was gonna get my sis in law to do it as she has started and does her daughters and it looks amazing, but I wanted my first ever loc journey to be completely my own. Didn’t want her to start them, I end up not liking them, combing them out and having to start over. I didn’t wanna waste her time. I’d rather have wasted my own and learned from myself then to have taken her valuable time. I feel proud knowing I did it myself and that i’m gonna be maintaining my own hair. I don’t wish to be dependent on anyone but myself, as i’ve had a very codependent/clingy past. This is deeply liberating.

For one my hair does NOT make nice neat parts and anyone trying to force my hair at the scalp to do that will damage my fragile hair. I’m nearly 17 months loc’d but I haven’t been to a hair professional since my teens just for that reason! I agree with you a hundred. You don’t need a hair professional!
All hair goals should be health, but most focus on looks. Looks last a week, but Health is forever. I was able to overcome impending balding on my own. Using my own diy products and nutrition.
My parts are jacked up, but my hair is full, thick, shiny, black, moist and strong! I’m not crazy about hair styling - I just think they are very damaging. I usually wrap my hair or do loose curls, but they pretty much unstyled.
Eventually, I’d like to color my hair with henna, but at this point, no one loves my hair better than me.

Thank you for making this video and I felt so bad for Kennedy and her video because I could relate. I'm a woman who's dealt with pp hair loss. So when I scheduled my first appt my loctician had me in her room alone. The next time I went in there was so many people in her room I was embarrassed. My edges were gone and there was a room full of people just gossiping and hanging out watching me get my hair done. I was so ashamed. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. After that I went to another locticians home and he did them for me in private and he said a lot of his customers are older women with thinner hair and they complained about being uncomfortable in the shop as well. Long story short, I since then learned to do it myself. Now I know what's in my hair, how not to retwist too tight etc. No way am I going back into the shop. Thanks for the video!!

This is my 3rd time locing my hair. I’ve never had a Loctician or stylist. I don’t like the pressure of perfect parts. Each time my hair was down my back and people always ask if my hair is real. I just started my children’s hair locing process. I took my son in to a stylist and she smothered his hair with brown gel and his head was itching for weeks. Do it yourself if you want to and save lots of time and money! Happy locing!

Thank you for this video. I'm in the process of locing again after 26 yrs. I had a locticion tell me my hair was to soft and it wouldn't take. I left and started my own as I did two decades ago. It's so impersonal now. Thanks again.

I just need someone to start them and I’ll take it from there . I like my parts perfect and I need them to lay right. Last time I had locs someone started them and I maintained them for a year and a half then cut them . Idk why I did . But as I look back I maintained them pretty well and they were healthy. I think I missed my loose natural hair but now I want them forever !

You are so right ✅ that's why it's so important to your research, understand your curl pattern, your natural hair. Understand what healthy hair 😍 products will work for you. I have a hair stylist she's started my loc journey and she straight out of a hair show . That taught 👌 💯 her a lot about lot along time ago in Alanta Georgia. And she is awesome 👌 with my hair 😍.

This video! I started my journey last June. I did my research, know what my hair likes, what type of maintenance I will keep, and so on. My plan was to start and maintain because I will not go broke doing what I can do for myself. I'm like that with a lot of things. Car maintenance, household repairs, cooking, etc. People do need to know that they can do more than they think, if they're willing to learn and to try. I was thinking about going to a loctitian for my 1 year locaversary, just because it would be something special, but I think I'll just save that money and do a fancy hairstyle myself. 🤔 The prices are so high! I'm in WV now but I would have to drive into MD or DC to find a loctitian.
    Congratulations! Children are a blessing.

But I also do not want folks pulling on my hair soft fine locs because everybody hands is not good for my hair., I don’t want negative energy in my locs after my research only I will do my locs to keep my hair clean and healthy #naturalhair… everybody hair type is different. ‼️😊💯💕

I felt bad for her as well. I tried to start mine 4 times. The 4th was a charm! The first time the “Stylist” used a product that made my hair feel waxy and stiff. I didn’t like it so I washed them out. The second time I attempted them myself and they were too small. The third time I went to an loctician who supposedly had been doing locs for 18 years and she was so mean and her energy was wayyyyy off. I was not getting with her at all. I had no real experience with locs and I brought pictures and tried to give her an idea of what I wanted and she shot everything down and told me to go home and find more picture of someone with my hair texture and type with the size locs I wanted and I thought I did but she would say, “your hair not that thick” or “that’s not your texture” I’m like, look, I apparently am used to my hair out and thought I knew what texture and thickness my hair was but I couldn’t translate that to what size she need to start my locs for them to look a certain way and if my hair could even achieve the look and I even told her the size I was wanting in the end and we got nowhere. She was the professional and I was expecting more help with this process but instead I left her chair again without locs and it took me 2 years almost to go to someone again and I found a loctician here in Georgia that had awesome energy and made the process so easy and I loved them then and now. I’m 9 months in and hate it took so long.

I've had some serious horror stories with locticians, starting from the one who established my sisterlocks. Almost three years later I've finally accepted that I need to take control of my hair and stop depending on faux locticians to do right by my hair. Only I can do that. I've since combined my locs twice because I realized after having sisterlocks for a year that they weren't for me. I should have gotten traditional locs which is what I've always wanted. Now my locs are finally the size I want them to be and I'm no longer giving my $$$ to anyone to care for my hair and I'm much, much happier with how my locs look.

  • @britblyss

I’ve been loc’d for 8 months so far and I’m loving my loc journey. I had a pretty good loctician who started my locs and I’ve recently switched locticians. I think it’s important for you to do what’s best for you. It’s important to research your loctician and not just on Instagram. That’s where people mess up. I go to a salon where they only do locs and that’s it. Each loctician (it’s about 9 of them) follow the same process and use the same products from washing to retwisting.
It’s wonderful for those who are able to retwist their own hair but locs also come in many different shapes and sizes. I know for a fact that a loctician will do a way better job than I would. My preference is not the “free form” loc. I like the palm roll look for myself, so having a loctician that not only helps me maintain my locs but actually does a great job is a plus.
I saw the video and I did feel bad for her. But we all have bad experiences from time to time. If she’s confident in her own abilities to maintain her hair then I say go for it, and yes she doesn’t need a loctician. For the ones like me, who would rather not do their own locs, find a loctician who cares about the health of your locs and your loc journey, not just styling them. Many locticians have consultations. You should be asking them as many questions as they are asking you.

I totally agree! And not only the things the loctician is saying but things they may not be saying - e.g. not pointing out issues they can see with your hair or scalp that you should be made aware of, or generally making you feel unwelcome or just being downright grumpy/silent. As paying customers we deserve better - and are entitled to walk or self-maintain if the service isn't good enough.

So yes you're right, we don't need a someone to do our locs but I love my loctician oodles and oodles. We vibed and understood each other immediately. It's been nearly three years and my hair that would often break when it got to my neck has never been healthier or stronger. We've combined a few locs over the years as parts have done their own thing but she's always receptive to my questions, checks in on the health of my entire head and when I need to do something new she lets me know. I can probably say some of that previous breakage was me only looking at my limited understanding of healthy hair and how to grow it, especially after I stopped relaxing it. I think we have to know our strengths and taking care of my hair solo is not one of mine. Plus, and this is something I'm lucky to be able to do, that monthly retwist visit is usually part of my self-care weekend. Get a massage on one day and a retwist the next day. Keeps me sane and I don't fuss at anyone.

I have a great loctician I have been rocking with her for years. She started off as just my natural hair stylist but was the one that started my locs and have been maintaining them every since then. Don’t get it twisted though I can and will maintain my own hair but its honestly nice and refreshing to let someone else style and care for your hair.
