I remember when Darryl died. It shook up the whole MLB that a guy that was only 33 could pass away the way he did from heart disease like his dad. May he and his father both sleep in peace and may the Lord grant their family solace. And much respect to you for creating this video and ensuring that his memory lives on. Thank you.
Thank you for this. I'm 47 and from St. Louis, but this is a time period where I mostly lost track of the Cards out here in Oregon. I very much appreciate this Moment In History!
Thank You for posting this video and for some of Kiles Backstory. I’ve been a Cardinal fan all of my life, I was 16 in 2002. I remember clearly the day he passed and was in total disbelief because we just lost the Great Jack Buck a week earlier. To lose a Pitcher in the prime of his life, with 2 young kids was a devastating loss for the fanbase. I hope the Cardinals reinstall the “Good Guy award” that was named in his honor.
Always a joy to see you posting a video! Amazing editing, pacing, and narration as always. Hope you keep it up and get the bigger recognition these videos deserve!
I had the opportunity to meet Darryl Kile at a Cardinals event a mere 6 months before he died. Thanks for highlighting DK57 throughout his career. Hard to believe its been 21 yrs. Did you know that Kile's final game as a pitcher was the same night that the great Cardinals announcer Jack Buck passed away? Little did we know that just 4 days later the Cardinals would suffer yet another loss.
I did know that, probably the craziest thing was that Joe was on the play-by-play for that game roughly a few hours before his dad passed. That game feels so cursed now, but I’m glad someone preserved it and put it on UA-cam
@TheDiamondBaseball I forgot about Joe Buck being on the play by play. Thanks for the reminder. At Busch Stadium we have a memorial to Darryl Kile in the bullpen. It's a black circle w/ DK57 in the middle. And yes it is still there to this day.
He's only forgotten to those that don't live in the Midwest. The Cardinals give out a Darryl kile award annually to a player. I remember when I was a teenager and the Cardinals got him I was so excited because I liked him. He was my favorite Cardinal pitcher and I'll never forget when I saw the highlights on ESPN Joe girardi said that the game was canceled because of a death in the Cardinals family I'll never forget that and then the legendary Jack Buck died they both died within like a week of each other I do believe.
I’m so mad at the fact that the cardinals stopped giving out the award. To their credit, the Astros still give out the award each year, but the cardinals haven’t given the award since 2020 :(
Thank you for putting this together. I gee up in Houston in the 90s and he was always one of my favorites. I think about him a lot. Glad you are sharing his story and legacy.
Great video, as always man. Always appreciate your contribution to the discourse and this is a really cool version of "remember some guys." Do you have a tie to Kile? Or just a cool story you came across?
Appreciate the kind comment, glad you liked the video! I was going through my old baseball cards when I was back home in the us and just happened to notice I had a ton of Kile cards for no reason (specifically on the Rockies too, which made it even odder). Just made me think about how hardly anyone mentions him at all anymore and how sad that is
We only see Kershaw's stuff from the right of his center so it appears 12 to 6. Does it really have the sweep of the Kile curveball? If so it's no wonder he's going to the HOF.@@TheDiamondBaseball
Just a year after dumping Kile on St. Louis, Colorado proceeded to learn absolutely nothing and give Mike Hampton (a guy who also relied on soft contact) the biggest pitcher contract ever at the time. He predictably falls apart at Coors (At one point having a higher hitting WAR than pitching WAR), before shockingly reviving to form once he's dumped to Atlanta, trading speedster Juan Pierre away to do so.
You stole SB Nations' Rewinder catchphrase lol. That's ok if we just watch the same content. Good video, I really wanted to start my day super sad! Lol, no I did get slightly teary eyed though.
I remember the day he died, we had just lost Jack Buck so we were blown away! Great man and pitcher, thanks for featuring him ❤⚾
No problem, he deserves more recognition! Hope you enjoyed the video
I remember seeing Joe Buck on Fox break the news that Darryl Kile had died, that's why the game wasn't going to be played at Wrigley Field.

The day Darryl died, that legit stunned me into silence. I'm not even a Cardinals fan, but I was crushed. Thanks for the video!
Gonna create a Sporacle quiz called “can you name every recipient of the Darryl Kile good guy award?”
This is actually an amazing quiz idea lmao
Thank you for spreading his legacy
I hope this video will spread his legacy, he deserves to be remembered

Thanks for this segment of an underrated 90s player. I was in attendance for DK’s second to last start in Seattle vs the Mariners.
Thank you! Appreciate your pfp btw

Great channel man. I looked and didn't see the tragic story of Steve Olin and Tim Crews in your archives. Worth a look. Dude.
Will definitely take a look into it, but I’m probably going to wait a while before another tragedy video - need a break from sadness for a bit lol

I’m glad you enjoyed it, I hope I did him justice

Great job on this. Great curveball.
Thank you! And yeah it’s insane, it’s basically a right-handed Kershaw curveball

The first MLB game I ever attended was on 4 May, 1999. Kile was pitching for the Rockies against the Cubs.
To be fair, have the Rockies ever learned anything when it comes to pitching?
I'd never wished for a team to succeed more than the 2002 Cardinals, they had a really good cast of characters and Kile's death was hard on the team.
Hope Europe is treating ya well my guy.
It’s been going well so far!
I remember having his card from 92 or 93 with Houston as a kid.

I Never heard HIM TALK!!!
Bout to get a Jomboy boost on this one.
