This game holds a special place in my heart, as it's what singlehandedly got me into fighting games. I'd tried SFV and bounced off. I'd tried Strive and bounced off. The gorgeous presentation and simpler mechanics got me to appreciate neutral, defense, pressure. There are dozens of games worth of amazing memories I wouldn't have had if I didn't play GBVS, and for that I'll always respect it. Great video, was a treat to wake up to.

Hi buddy. I bounce off everything. I have severe autism, have been playing games for 37 years straight. Granblue has this thoughtful slow gameplay. And footsie based like one of my favourite fighting game SF5. Granblue is basically a streetfighter game with weapons, magic and fantasy setting like Lord of the rings. I love this game despite rollback net code. My homies and I get together on the weekends for hours of fun pause. Playing this game. This game is one of my all time favourites. Blazblue central fiction, arcana hearts 3, Guilty gear rev 2, sf5 and sf6, tekken tag tournament 2, tekken 6,7, check out Nitroplus Blasterz - Heroines infinite duel, rumble fish 2, Akatsuki Blitzkampf, under the night in birth games, melt blood actress again, Skullgirls is amazing but hard as hell online, the ass kicking we casuals take in rank is a crime against mental health. Me I personally don't mind rematching a hundred times and getting slaughtered. But I know tons of casual players, who have literally abandoned many fighting games after getting destroyed in ranked. Check out old school king of fighters 98 ultimate match final edition and king of fighters 2002 unlimited match one of my favs too. Hell I love fighting games. Throw in obscure bonus ones for ya, to try out. Breakers collection, million Arthur blood, persona 4 ultimax, Blazblue central fiction, surprisingly alot of people haven't played this gem yet even in 2023. Happy discovering tons of fighting games that suit you buddy.

Yeah, combo limits are a VERY good thing. A lot of people who don't become interested in fighting games have that experience because they'll play a fighting game in single-player mode against bad CPUs and have fun, but then when they hop online they get paired up against XxSephrioth_bongrippa_420xX who rushes in, jabs them once, and then takes out 80% of their life bar with one combo. The player sits there, blinking, wondering what the hell just happened and what they were supposed to do about it.
One of the reasons I mostly play Smash Bros is because the combos are short and difficult to pull off, but most importantly, the opponent can influence the outcome of the combo through directional influence. You don't just sit there and watch it happen.
    Combo limits: godsend.

Can't disagree with this review more, regarding the gameplay mechanics.
What you don't like about it, and call it boring for, are EXACTLY what makes it more fun for me than most fighting games released since 2012.
'Gameplay designed by someone who hates fighting games'? Most certainly not.
More like, gameplay designed by someone who understands what makes the genre great outside of aggressive play and combos that take away all interactivity from one player for an extended period of time.
I've been playing the genre since 2002 and my formative fighting games were SoulCal 2 and 3, DoA 2, Virtua Fighter 4 EVO and 5 FS, and Tekken 6. Games with more focus on neutral and less lockdown or one player taking all interactivity away from the other player. (aka. objectively good PvP game design).
These set the bar for what I enjoy in a fighting game.
In my fighting games, I want less combos, a slower pace, a more controlled playing field, more viable playstyles than just rushdown, and more seconds per round to be spent in player interactions rather than block pressure or singleplayer combos.
After all, its a two player game. If you want long singleplayer stretches of memorized combos, go play a singleplayer rhythm game, not a PvP game.
I will always stand by the universal game design standard that control should be taken away from players as infrequently as possible. Yes, even in PvP games (uninteractive combos, crowd control/stun, QTEs, etc.)
More neutral, more player interactions, more ACTUAL gameplay.

As a top EU Cagliostro player, GBVS was honestly a good albeit somewhat lacklustre for all it was hyped up to be. Yes, it was kind of meant to be “for beginners”, and I really wish it could be at least a bit more fast-paced. Great review, I had so many things I agree with here!

As someone who just bought the legendary edition for 16$ I'm surprised how good the interactions are! Even SF6 a "Triple A" fighting game the interaction are so basic! It's sad because the actual fighting can easily be SO MUCH better with a few fixes, mainly the special move/meter usage and auto combos!

It’s hard to put into words how I feel about this game. It’s not all negative is the thing. I didn’t really care much about the story mode. I found it really repetitive (maybe I didn’t get far enough to get to the good part or something). As for the vs mode, it felt like I had more fun playing a few characters and not having fun playing the game, if that makes sense.

Watching someone praise a game so highly despite me not caring for it really isn't that surprising to me, since despite many FGC content creators trying to define what objectively makes a good fighting game, the reality is that the answer to that question is going to change depending on WHO you ask, EVEN among pro players. For instance, they are are pro players that only like fighting games that are primarily footsie based, so games like Street Fighter and KOF are games that they are most likely going to love and hate airdashers like BBCF, GGXRD, and MBTL. Personally, I prefer airdashers over purely footsie based ones, since the extra movement gives you more ways to approach the opponent during offense and neutral, but I'm aware it's an opinion that definitely isn't shared by everyone. Though this fact isn't surprising to me, since fighting games are still art and art IS subjective, and what is good or bad is going to VARY from person to person.
And one of the things I value in the fighting game is unique characters that set them selves apart from each other, whether that be in terms of movement speed, defense, and ESPECIALLY game plan and unique system mechanics ONLY available to that character. It's one of the main reasons that I didn't like DragonBallFighterZ, since when that game launched the game felt very homongenized, and in that way didn't feel like an Arc System works Title at all, especially when you compare DBFZ to Arc System Work's earlier titles like GGXRD and BBCF where the characters were JUST AS complicated as the universal system mechanics themselves. And it's not just a problem I have with Arc either, since even more newer titles from other developers suffer from this issue I have with Homogenization, with games like the new Melty Blood, and even Tekken 7 suffering from this exact same problem ( infamous FGC Content creator Aris himself ADMITS that Tekken 7 is homongenized). Currently, games like BBCF, GGXRD, and SC6 are my favorite fighting games since all three have what I'm looking for, with BBCF being my number one, since that currently is the most unique fighting game currently out on the market IMO.
I say all of this because if your love for the game is not there your chances of wining are MUCH lower, and those people will always be behind the curve of those who ACTUALLY enjoy the game. (High prize pool or not). So as someone who doesn't particularly care for footsie based fighting games in the first place ( like KOF, Street Fighter, DNF DUEL, GBFVS) the recent million dollar announcement for SF 6 doesn't do much for me in terms of motivating me to play the game. The only positive I see is that other fighting game developers may feel the need to have prize pools, to match their competitors to help keep interest in their games for casuals outside a particular community. That being said, I'm happy for Street Fighter fans , GBVS fans with the new update, and footsie based fans in general though.

  • @fcf8269
    @fcf8269 Рік тому

I don't get why people get so shocked by the cooldown mechanic. It is the same as having a bar that you need to build to get a special move that use that special bar.
The only difference is that you know exactly when that move will be available again, as its time availability is fixed, and does not depends from variables like how many times you parry, hit or get hit.
I prefer way more to know when I have the chance to use that ability and use it strategically; compared to gambling every match (that can be different every single time, no matter if I use the same combo scheme), until I can use my super move or what not. Then it is a matter of preferences, sure; because you may be lucky and end up recharging 10 times a super and win easily, and some people call that "being good at it".
It is the difference between chess players and card players: the former is 99% based on your skills, there is 1% luck and variables; while the latter is based mostly on luck, so no matter how good you are; there may be times when you lose and it is not your fault, and that does not mean you are bad player (nor you are good if you win, by the same logic.)

Long and unstoppable combos are a cancer in modern video games. I hate when "Touch of Death" combos are a mechanic.
This game, old Street Fighters and the Samurai Shodown saga have the style of combos I like: short, beautiful and very powerful.
I get bored with players who just do eternal combos in Killer Instinct or Dragon Ball FighterZ or MvC 3 Ultimate, for example.
Let's exchange blows, make it thrilling!
Not just watching a player executing long combos while the other has to wait until half of his life is gone.

I always love making my character look unique, but I will never feel good about spending money on a useless piece of data that doesn't effect the gameplay, so I always feel like I am missing out when it is a feature. I really hope more games don't follow that part of Granblue.

I see they lowered the 60$ price to 20-50$ on Steam. That's still asking for too much, as most FGs are dead online (esp. with no rollback). Lol, another yoke (joke).
"There are tons of intros." I appreciate the work in itself but in the context of a video game feature, this is completely superfluous and a waste of time and resources in my eyes. Considering that 1. the one I saw in the video was obnoxious and too long and 2. most people would probably rather skip them than watch them after about 5 games.
"Adding in rollback later is hard." This begs the question: Why did they not use rollback from the get go? I partially know the answer, Japanese fighting game and arcade culture is to blame. I wish they got over this. Baby steps.
