Developing your vibrato will help you develop your sound.
“Vibrato is like a pasta sauce. Everyone has their unique recipe. Work on perfecting each of the ingredients and your recipe will develop and be perfected over time.” ~Dr. Lynn Kuo
Top 5 Vibrato Mistakes:
0:00 Introduction
0:43 Mistake #1: The Weird Wiggle:
Solution: The Hand Print
3:00 Mistake #2: The Too Tense Vibrato
Solution: The Golden Horseshoe:
- Think of relaxing the thumb in order to relax the entire hand.
- Think of an energy circuit from thumb through the inside of the hand to the finger, like a “Golden Horseshoe”
- Keep the thumb and hand relaxed. (Release any thumb tension.)
- Think of an energy circuit between thumb and finger (the “Golden Horseshoe”), which helps keep the hand relaxed.
- Also think of relaxing the entire arm structure: Collar bone, shoulder blade
Tip: Nod your head from the A.O. joint instead of jutting your chin out and pressing your head onto your chin rest
- Please see my Violynn Chats interview with Body Mapping educator Jennifer Johnson. Jennifer talks more about the left arm and shoulder area:
• Prevent Pain & Injury ...
6:56 Mistake #3: The Inappropriate Vibrato:
Solution: Know your styles, listen carefully.
- Research styles by listening to great artists - live or on recordings.
- Learn different styles and what kinds of vibratos sound appropriate for them.
- Listen acutely to evaluate your own vibrato.
My students in my Violin Bootcamp know that I advocate for and preach acute listening. I teach them how to imagine their ideal sound and interpretation and how to create that with their own technique.
9:41 Mistake #4: The Uncentered Vibrato.
Solution: Use your elephant ears
- Use your Auditory Feedback Loop to constantly give you feedback on pitch.
- Use your ‘elephant ears’ and keep them wide open and stay aware.
- Listen carefully for your desired pitch and whether your vibrato oscillation is distorting that pitch.
11:41 Mistake #5: The Stop and Start Vibrato (the most popular violin and viola vibrato mistake!)
aka Delayed vibrato.
Solution: Practice continuous vibrato aiming for continuous vibrato, passing it from note to note.

I've recently started a serious campaign to master the violin and viola after being a principal guitarist for 53 years and I loved the hand print exercise because I figured it out along the way. This is my first time tuning in and I really appreciate what you're doing. Thanks again.
Glad to hear that my video helped you, Garland!
I’ve encountered so many guitarists who start learning violin afterwards. 👏 That’s great!
Dear Dr.Lynn, Awesome presentation. I love especially the part on relaxing all the way from the shoulder. I've realized that I tend to tense-up sometimes without realizing it. :-)
Yes, me too, Tony! That’s why I thought it was important to mention it. 🙂
Stop start vibrato..... The bane of my violin vibrato life 😭🤣... Gonna try the double stops. Thank you!
You’re not alone! And my pleasure!
Very Effective Teaching like Beginner Violin Student. Thankyou So much Teacher (Madan)
I like knowing what to avoid, even as I'm not there yet. thank you
My pleasure, Bernadette! You’ll be so far ahead with your inquisitive spirit. 👌👏
Great video!! Very effective about relaxing the shoulder and chest area! Tension is the one I have most trouble with!
Violinna Hi Inna! Thanks for watching! 😊 And yes, I’ve struggled so much with tension over the years too. I’ve had to train myself to monitor chest area tension - it helps!
Thank you for addressing the “stop / start” or “delayed vibrato.” We see and hear that even in some of the best concert artists. I don’t think it’s always a conscious choice they are making. If we feel secure enough with our technique that we can start the vibrato immediately at the beginning of the note, we can then make choices to delay the vibrato occasionally as a special effect, rather than unconsciously starting the vibrato late on almost every note. The solution you demonstrate using double stops while crossing strings is a very clever one. Thank you for this excellent video!
Thanks, Garrett! I catch myself doing stop-start vibrato at times too! Tricky business being a string player, isn’t it? 😅
What does the Jedi Master do for this issue? (Or perhaps Jedis don’t ever have delayed vibrato! 😂)
@@violynnkuo Tricky business indeed! I’m no Jedi Master, but I seem to remember Yoda said “No try. Do, or NOT Do.” 🤣
@@GarrettFischbachViolin “NOT do” I can do! 👌 😂
Excellent!! Thank you for explaining. My present mistakes: all of them. Just starting to learn vibrato. 😅
Glad you got something out of the video, Elena! Good luck with the vibrato practice. I still refine my vibrato technique to this day so I know all about the journey! :) Have fun with it!
Love this💕

Great video, Lynn! I like the use of continuous vibrato in scales to avoid a stopped vibrato! Keep up the great work on these wonderful videos!
Thanks so much for watching, Darlene!
You'll recognize some familiar gems in Part 2 coming next week. :)
Thank you for your insights in this video, Lynn! The tension example - and your novel horseshoe solution - is the one that is most useful for me.
Thanks, Steve! So happy to hear that the ‘Golden Horseshoe’ resonates with you! 😃
Insuring that the total arm is relaxed and practicing non stop vibrato via double-stops is a real game changer.
Thanks Dr. Kuo
You are so welcome, Vincent!
I’m happy to hear that the double stops and arm relaxation concepts are particularly helpful.
In fact, putting both of them together would be an even greater training exercise! 😃

Happy to hear my tutorial helps, John! Take it slow with the exercises! I've seen so many people learn it incorrectly and then they have to spend $$$ to unlearn their incorrect habits.
As someone who started using Vibrato(the correct way) last month, this is very helpful.
Thank you 🤗

Thank you for this!! Really loved the details on losing tension. I also like that you have your video really close to your hand to see what you are doing. My problem is the delayed vibrato- stop and go..as I dont know how to fo continuous vibrato.
Deborah Kim Hi Deborah! 👋 Thanks for watching and I’m glad you found some helpful things in the video! Yes, continuous vibrato is definitely something I need to work on often as a continual reminder.

Oops number 5 mistake is what I do constantly! Thanks for the solution you gave (double stops) , Hope it works out for me, I will report the result.
Yes, continuous vibrato is always something to work on for many string players! Glad you found the video useful, Mehdi!
So, what to do with my thumb is my focus at this moment. This is my first vibrato practice. I've read Leopold Auer's chapter mostly criticizing overuse of vibrator. Written in the 1930's, I suppose he was focused on earlier composers. Now I'm finding a specific vibrato at the end of a note (often at the end of a line), played lightly in gypsy jazz (and wide vibrato). I learned to play by ear starting about 8 years ago (mostly Appalachian tunes and whatever is played at our weekly open jam, and now I'm attempting jazz with a guitarist friend) and am learning to read music, my scales now include the third position, and now, vibrato! Thank you...if you actually read all this...nod your head. 😊
Nodding my head… 🙂 Happy Holidays! And happy vibrato-ing! Good luck with your thumb. Do your best to keep it relaxed!

Hello, what do you think of wrist aid stabilizer ?
Unfortunately, I don’t know of such a device to aid in learning vibrato technique. If there is such a thing, I did not use it to learn vibrato.
In the end, vibrato is done on the instrument without any extra accessories or tools, so I wouldn’t recommend such a stabilizer.
Dear Dr. Kuo, I have an extremely SPECIFIC question that I have not been able to find an answer to in other videos. The question is, "what are the slowest and fastest speeds of vibrato that are musically usefull?" (obviously, too slow would sound like a sad moan and too fast would sound like an angry hornet.)
--When I practice vibrato with the metronome, I use each click as a Dotted Half Note and measure the "back" and "forth" of the finger in SIX 8th notes (yes, I know most count in 16ths but this a problem for me).
--So if you (or I) are playing SIX "back and forths" per click in a piece, what would be the metronome range to work towards? Yes, aesthetically realize it varies, but I am looking for a number range that I can use to gauge my progress. Thanks!
Sei una grande.
Thanks 🙏 🎻!
Thanks 😊! What chinrest are you using?
You’re welcome! I use a Flesch chin rest.
@@violynnkuoThanks Lynn!
@@masah9291 You’re very welcome!
Off question (sorry) who made that violin? It's really beautiful. And I'm not quite to learning vibrato but is there an finger exercise for vibrato that I can use on breaks at work etc.?
Merry Christmas, Grant! 🎄
I play on a Vincenzo Postiglione (1888).
And yes, a really simple and very helpful exercise for the fingers is to encourage flexibility in the distal joint (the very last knuckle in the finger).
Touch each finger with the thumb and try to ‘buckle’ the end of each finger joint.
When this joint is flexible, it will improve the range of motion in your vibrato, this giving it more depth and richness.
Hope it helps!
I notice a difference between my right and left sides! 😅

What does it mean being too much vibrato? What's your opinion Dr
Good question, Daniel.
The best way to be able to answer that question is to develop ‘Bon goût’ as they say in French: “good taste”.
“Too much” vibrato could mean:
1. Too wide of a vibrato so that the pitch becomes uncentered
2. Vibrato that is not appropriate to the dynamic or character or style of the piece
Experience, understanding different styles, working with a coach, and listening to great artists are the best ways to develop ‘bon goût’ in terms of applying the appropriate amount of vibrato.
I hope that answers your question!
@@violynnkuo one more question, does too much vibrato means I play every note vibrato?
@@danielngui3941 Continuous vibrato (vibrating on every note without break) is usually a desired thing because otherwise, you get the "Start-Stop" vibrato mistake that I mentioned.
Feel free to watch my UA-cam Short on how to work on continuous vibrato:
ua-cam.com/users/shortsMjIkV9r-u_8?si=VMl5VDF75S7KZ7Oy
Is it compulsory to know all the vibrato techniques? Can't one find his or her own niche?
The purpose of working on your vibrato (i.e., adding variety and expanding your range) is so that you develop a much wider palette of colours to choose from when you play.
Depending on the phrase, the repertoire, the dynamic, the emotion, and the nuance you want to convey, you would be able to move effortlessly from any amplitude, speed, or intensity of vibrato you wish.
If one just has a “one-vibrato-fits-all”, then they limit themselves to just having one type of sound or expression.
not clear
