I quit violin. I’ve been playing piano. Practicing vibrato hurt my old fingers. I took about a thousand falls as a street skater in the 90’s and keeping the fingers of my left hand curled for hours on end wasn’t working for me. I moved on to Boogie Woogie piano and I could do a one off rendition of BWV 565 now.

    Great video!
For those of you in a hurry - my (very awesome) violin teacher used to say that it’s best for instructors not to push vibrato before the student is ready because the result is often an ugly, unnatural-sounding vibrato. In the meantime, he showed me some slo-mo, “drunken sounding” exercises using each string and each finger by turn to help with muscle memory and staying relaxed. He said it’s more efficient to acquire a beautiful vibrato at one’s own pace than it is to struggle even longer at unlearning a bad one down the line.

You're Lucky, I am a very stressed person and it's obvious in my playing. I have been playing for quite a while now, as a hobby, but I can play some more difficult pieces already but I can't do vibrato because I am tense, I try to let loose but am failing all the time and my teacher won't give me any tips saying it's not important but my slow pieces are always plain, the sound is clear but they're kinda boring if yk what I mean. So whenever I play slow pieces with friends I feel completely disappointed, what's the point in playing the right notes at the right time and having a clear sound if there is nothing more to it

    1. Start with first or second finger on G string
    2. Make sure everything’s loose but with a slight pressure
    3. The first way, imagine a train pushing your hand.
    4. The second one a string is pulling back. It’s pulling towards you. Your finger will be crunched together
    5. Go back and fourth between pulling and pushing.
    6. Practice without the bow first! Then add the bow.
    7. Use a metronome at 60 beats. One motion per beat
    8. Start slow and be patient
    9. Keep knuckles and joints very loose.
    10. For extra help place scroll against the wall and practice your vibrato movements.

I've been playing the violin on and off for the past 5 years, but I just started to gain the desire of learning vibrato seriously. The fact that you mentioned keeping the fingers, arm, and shoulder loose really made the progress easier as I do get tense when I play. I will definitely apply all of these and hope I can get a decent vibrato in a few months!

Thank you. Of all the vibrato tutorials that i watched, i think yours is the clearest and most helpful to me who thought that vibrato is beyond my reach. With your explanation of the push and pull motion on the wrist, i got a better understanding of how vibrato is done. I need a lot and lots of practice to get a decent sound but at least my left hand knows how it should move to produce the sound. Now, i only need my right hand to cooperate and not freeze when my brain commands the left hand to shift directions.

I've actually been playing for 18 years but my teacher have never really put effort into teaching me vibrato, and over the years it's become really difficult in making some great sounding vibrato. :(
Do u think it's still possible to learn it after such a long time?

This was so helpful, thanks!! My new violin teacher isn't really patient with students, and he rushes us so quickly, and gives us a brief lesson. It hard to keep up with him, especially since my old violin teacher was really good at explaining stuff, and made me into a great violinist. I started to become very frustrated with my new teacher and thought about quitting TWICE, but watching your tutorials made me believe in myself again, because you remind me of her so much! My 3 1/2 years won't go to waste :) Thank you so so much :D

Gioacchino Lopez I’m sorry your teacher said that! that’s misleading! Vibrato does not come “naturally” to any of us. Even the ones who get it faster than others. It is a very difficult skill for most and I’m seeing more and more that it is a very neglected skill. It seems like most of us are left to figure it out on our own. I mean, are we left to let spiccato and ricochet “come naturally?” Vibrato is one of the difficult skills on the violin and needs thorough and correct instruction and guidance. There are actually 8 vibrato activating switches that leave all other vibrato advice in the dust and makes vibrato a tangible skill for everyone.
