@@FatherVampire You said it all. I couldn't agree more. I've always been a Casio fan, what's not to love? There's practically a Casio for everyone, and another..and...
I managed to pick up a vintage Casio 60QS-20 from the 70s with the full metal case for next to nothing as it was 'broken'. Turned out it just needed cleaning inside and out! Now in perfect working order and one of the gems of my collection! 😀
You highlight my main criticism; it's still not QUITE there! Full metal is a step forward; sapphire and 10bar is a necessity! If they can bring all that together people would happily pay double, add a gold-tone to the range and it would sell, sell, sell! Come on Casio!
As much as I like reverse/negative LCDs, they immediately make the watch feel non-vintage to me, as I never saw these in the 80s. But it's nice to see a much improved backlight over vintage pieces. Wearing my DW260 currently, same 690 module as the DW1500...and I really love that DW1500 for the steal case and 200M WR, but...the plastic bezel protector rings always breaks and is impossible to replace these days.
This concept is a good start for Casio! Producing digital watches with steel cases is not that expensive and a lot of people would actually buy them. They just need to come up with more appealing designs. Standard LCD screens (not the inverted ones) and not mother of pearl faces in order to make them look a little more masculine. Let’s see!
The fact that you sometimes have difficulty reading it might be a feature and not a bug... Because from a distance or even up close it remains more of a silver black wristband and NOT shouting the time in huge digits into the whole room.
I can’t take you seriously if you think Casio is bad. A watch is a watch if it’s not a fake or junk but Casio is a great brand Great video! I’m gonna look into getting one
Just bought an A1000D so without the negativity in more ways than one. I get the criticisms. Maybe they will bring out a version with better water resistance and sapphire crystal but to be fair, for now, I am over the moon with mine. You can feel the ridges on the bezel and that captures me even before the mother of pearl effect does in most light. Fantastic.
5:00 pretty sure it is not an EL backlight, especially in that shot you can see a distinct bright spot at the side of the display, which is a rather clear indicator of an LED backlight Edit: it even says LED backlight in the data sheet in the shot before, so i think you just misspoke
You might want to take a look at the Casio Ediface Sapphire (EFR-S107D-1AVCR) and Casio Oceanus (OCW-S100-1AFJ). The Ediface is a super-thin, super-affordable quartz sports watch with sapphire glass and 100m w/r, while the Oceanus is pretty much the ultimate go-anywhere grab-n-go watch with atomic timekeeping, sapphire glass, 100m w/r, and has a titanium band and case with their solar-charged Tough Movement in it. It's so light that once you put it on you forget you're wearing it. It's also super-easy to adjust as you hop timezones. The Oceanus is their JDM line while the Ediface is their everywhere-else line and the two are completely different. The Ediface 1AVCR I picked up brand-new off Amazon for $60 but the price jumped up to $94 after folks found out about them and started buying them in droves. The Oceanus stays around the $500 mark for both the non-bluetooth and bluetooth models (I opted for the non-bluetooth original). And don't forget the recent Timex Pac-Man digital watch re-issue for the ultimate in 80s throwback. Available in gold-tone, silver-tone, or black @ $80/ea.
I was such a Casio fan boy from about 8 - 23, where every watch I bought was a Casio, must have gone through about 20 of them. I was even given as gifts, xmas & birthdays 2 Swatch Watches (The see through one and a POP Swatch), a Accurist Diver and and a Hand me down Tissot . I never wore them except on the day I received them, next morning, Casio back on the wrist. Then from 23 to about 35 I had about 4 G-Shocks, wearing them until they disintegrated from my wrist. It's only since my mid 30's I have had the Swiss bugm but still own a number of G-Shocks and other Casio, like the Duro.
Watching this while wearing my Casio F-84W. I’d love to see Casio start making full metal case models of the A158 and A168. The new A700W is an amazing newer Casio where they just got it right, they missed an opportunity there to make it with a metal case. I’ll likely end up getting the A1000, but those Mother of Pearl dials arent really my style. The Black seems to be more subtle, but would prefer the positive display over the negative. Come on Casio, so close, but still short of perfection. Thanks for the video. I always love your Casio reviews and enthusiasm for the brand.
I have always appreciated your efforts to highlight less expensive quality watches and your reviews do a great job elevating sometimes pedestrian but high quality timepieces. So I say this reluctantly, but this particular Casio does not seem to fit your usual criteria for quality: a) It's not tough / scratch resistant / water resistant and b) it's illegible. There is no excuse for not being able to read a watch, especially with Casio's new generation of highly legible reverse LCDs (see my GBD-H1000). Anyway, keep up the excellent work TGV! Your work is excellent!
As of writing this comment. There is now a listing for this very piece on Amazon in the US. I have purchased one for myself and cannot wait to wear it constantly and make so many memories surrounding the watch. I actually own the positive display A1000 variant and have enjoyed the hell out of the thing. TGV you have gotten me into watches and my CASIO collection is only growing stronger.

Very very high quality work and deliverables over here, thank you loads for it. It was a pleasure following this video.
Have had it for a few months and really enjoying it. Coming from only wearing a Casio a178 for the last 5 years, it is a nice step up for me as I am older now and in college. The look is amazing and perfect for a casual/street/prep style, pretty much anything you'd wear in college goes with it. Price wise, I would not spend $150 on it but at $60 from Spain (TicTacArea) it is well worth it. Especially considering it will age so much better than the a168/178 which has the chrome coating peel and face scratch easily. TL;DR If you are a young man who enjoys Casio digital watches this is a MUST BUY.
Great work once again. I am starting to consider a new collection because of these videos. I don't think a watch that is over a months salary is a sensible idea anymore. The importance of the lower cost watches is amazing. It is also impressive how the design is so rich and interesting. I can't say I will enjoy a watch 1000 times more by spending a 1000 times more.
Thanks, another great video and review. I appreciate your honesty and integrity, that's something noticeably missing from so many reviews! I should point out there's a difference between Mother of Pearl (MOP) and abalone. MOP can be found in oysters, abalone, and other mollusks, it is a milky-white color. Abalone shell has the rainbow shades in it, as such, this Casio has imitation abalone, not MOP. Most people don't know there is a difference especially since both abalone and MOP can come from the same place!
I wonder if the module can be easily modded for the countdown timer. I bought a $20 Casio and scratched a contact to activate the countdown timer. But you're right: it is something that should have come standard. Perhaps Casio is trying to get away from their nefarious history as the bomb makers' watch of choice.
Buy this black MOP bezel model and swap the module out with the posi display of the cheaper A700w. They share the same module, though the backlight on the posi a nice even and all over, amber. The light grey bezel of the a700w will also contrast nicely with the swapped neg display.
I bought the positive one with the white MOP. Showing up any day now. I was worried it will feel cheap but it sounds like the fit and finish are quite good. I joked that it was a Grand Casio.
I think there would be a large market for a grand Casio line. Take production back to Japan, add a sapphire crystal, better water resistance. Plenty of people would buy it. I spent most of my life wearing casio's. They're just so practical but now I can afford to buy something that cost a lot more. I've bought a few pricey automatic analogs now but I really still want the features of a good digital watch. Especially night visibility. Garmin has the top spot right now. And they charge plenty. $1000 for thier top specked out smart watches.
As ever, a great ‘warts and all’ review. I enjoy how you present all sides, neither emphasising good or bad, just pointing both out and letting viewers decide for themselves. That’s what a PROPER review is all about.
I grew up in the 70's. All these digitals leave me cold as if I'm Decker in the rain in a dystopian Blade Runner movie. The friendly analogue face of a watch has been replaced by diode chips making their eerie glow. How can it not know what it is ? Yeah I know. I'm fine, really, fine.
There is lots of confusing watch marketing going on. For example - as far as I know - the F-91-WC (colored) series was only released in the UK, so I had to source all six colorways from there. Seiko is releasing a lot of watches in the US and Asia only (for example the SKX was never officially available here in Germany, as well as the Recraft series which was only released in the US) and Orient has very few watches on the market where I live. Then again, sometimes it is good for my wallet that you can't every watch easily.
Hi TGV, I think that you missed the whole point of the display. It is so subtle and aligns with the faux MOP display surround . The point of the lack of clarity with the display allows it to change between the varying hues of color that appears in the MOP display surround. It moves from purple to beige depending on the light. In summary I think you have missed the whole point of the watch. I love it’s subtle display. Love it! By the way I bought the darker of the two with the milenese strap.
casio rules! however we like seiko, citizen, the swiss etc, we always go back home to the digital casio! Great video TGV! Casio rules in many ways! Stay healthy and best regards from Greece. Kostas
Just to fill in some back history, both the F and A lines of Casio watches go back a long ways, starting with the F-100 in 1977. The A-250 was available in 1980, which I believe was the first A series. It lacked water resistance, but had similar functionality to today's A-158W. Both the F-91W and A-159 (and I believe the A-158) were released in 1989, sharing the 593 module still used today. There are countless other related F, A, B, and W series Casios from this era, some are even full steel screwback models.
I put a mesh bracelet on my A163 a few months ago. I think it looks fantastic as does this one. I'm a big fan of mesh. It's light, breathable, comfortable and surprisingly elegant. This is a stunning watch, but I find it hard to justify paying the price when you can have the fun and character, if not the quality, in it's predecessors. But I still love it. It's a Casio, no more to be said. Great video my friend, hope you are keeping well?
I personally loved the Testatrossa driving into the sunset. _sigh_ Made me flashback to Miami Vice. 😄 I was a child in the 80s, born in 1979, but I remember the decade decently well! ☺️ I think Casio should do a *Knight Rider* special edition watch. 😁 Maybe a Miami Vice as well!
Maybe it's just me but this watch looks more like a cheaper version of the Casio W-780 (which is an actual vintage model). Even has the brushing on the lugs. It looks hot, I only say cheaper because the W-780 has a WR of 100m and has a few more features. I love that Casio is back to making steel cases for these beauties
TGV dude for some reason i've been wearing my Proplof constantly - can't get enough of it lately even though i got it like a year ago - i love falling in love with a piece for a second time - thank you for great videos sir
Thanks for the videos TGV! I nearly bought a certain fashion watch made in China, then I watched your video and spent double my budget but I’ve ended up with a Tissot le locle powermatic 80!! So glad I did 😉
Well, you certainly covered all basis on reviewing this watch , very professionally executed... I'm definitely not a fan of the band, I would rather the traditional style stainless steel segment band, and less of a dark digital display, the water resistance is mediocre and a let down, as you rightly mentioned, but based on most 30m Casio's it will almost never leak during swimming activities, never had one fail thus far.
I really like this watch and was tempted to buy it except for the price which I hope may be reduced in time. I ended up purchasing a Casio A700 which I purchased here in the UK at a retailers for only £27. Like this watch it is very slim at only 6mm and it really wears well on a small wrist and is really comfortable having a mesh bracelet. I was lucky to get mine for the price I paid for it as it is more expensive even than Amazon where I have purchased most of my Casio's except for my G-Shock 5610's. I will probably get an A1000 at a later date. Thanks for your review on this watch.
Thank you for the honest review TGV, I had luckily ordered one immediately after watching your video only to find out moments later they are sold out everywhere!
I found a gem of a G Shock you should check out. It’s the GM-S5600 in N America it’s marketed as a women’s watch but elsewhere it’s unisex. It’s basically this watch but a G Shock! Same module I believe but 200m and small. I was looking for this watch you reviewed and found the GM-s5600 and grabbed it immediately. Worth your attention dude.
Yeah, the GMS5600-1. There are no reviews on youtube but from pictures on the net it looks very nice. The first G-Shock without the G-Shock Protection lettering on the bezel. A cool watch, indeed. How is it in real life? Do you like it? I am tired of oversized watches and am considering a silver unisex version. I am cisgender male.
I might be the only one that finds the almost unreadable dial suitable for the design of this watch, as well as the black MOP. In reality the MOP is very subtle, it gives the watch an interesting touch, and the dark digital dial makes this watch more of a piece of jewelry than a tool. Your observation of the case design is spot on, the watch has a sense of brutalism, and has royal oak/nautilus vibe to it. I’m waiting for mine in the mail and the only thing I’d switch out is the mesh bracelets, I just don’t feel them… other than that I’d say this one is a success on Casio’s part.
I hope Casio will update it, because it is tempting. I want at least 5bar WR, black dial with positive screen and sapphire. Would be also wonderful if they would leave only CASIO on the dial and get rid of all the other text.
I found myself strangely and strongly attracted to this watch. It's like Gucci turned nerd. Love the mesh. Hate the too dark display. Thanks so much for bringing this up. I may have to begin a hunt. Isn't there a hack where a polarizing filter can be removed?
Best review of this watch that I've seen so far. I agree with everything you said although I would prefer more dial options that aren't mother of pearl.
My favorite Casio is a G shock GW M5610 but I have too a Casio A 158W, there are good quality and comfortable, my A158W I used in a swimming pool and still working perfectly, I tought the A158W is the perfect watch if is made of metal now I want this Casio A1000M
Very good video as always! But as you listed as a negative, only available in Europe and Japan. It's about damn time if you ask me, considering how the the US gets hundreds of cool models that never gets sold in Europe!
I blame the late great John Candy for the lack of respect shown Casio, although the line in planes trains and automobiles is a classic. Great video and informative as ever thanks TGV.
Casios should be tough; I would prefer the mineral, so, that's not an issue. Not a dive watch at all, 30 meters is a hundred feet, so, that's a non-issue. Price is ok. Not that 3 years battery life is a problem, but, I'm curious as to how the older version had over twice the life; does it have something to do with the type of screen? On a final note, I used to have a black screen Suunto that a lot of critical reviews complained about, but, I never had a problem reading it. All it took was to slightly angle it a certain way, not difficult or time consuming at all. Wonder if this watch will be the same.
I rewatched this video I have to say the review is quite good. You're attention to detail in this video and the way you elegantly put the characteristics of the watch casio should be paying you And I don't say that to be insulting I mean that you elegantly and beautifully showed the watch in its true form.
@@jorgem8384 It's still expensive - basically it's a simplest Casio after all. It's a watch for enthusiasts so extra price for sapphire wouldn't be a problem.
Planes trains and automobiles, john candy trying to pawn his watch. Displaying it like home shopping network up and down his arm. Claiming Casio. Classic.
You're is the first Casio that's really gotten my attention. I had one in grade school, but not since... That water resistance is dreadful and might be a deal killer.... Too bad about the weak negative display.. . If they update it, better display.... Better water resistance and sapphire and it will be a fantastic watch. No USA release???
The Urban Gentry Thank you for that info . It makes my think that a video playlist with this type of music and your talents would be like lockdown Heaven.
One thing I enjoy about Casio, They make a watch for everybody. I think most people immediately think of Casio as only producing sporty style watches. It's awesome to see that some of their watches can be dressy as well. Have a good one Tristano.
You can still have metal cased casio for way cheaper if u just take the time to look on ebay for example look up the casio A160 in all black for like 30dollars
I bought one and did a swap for a positive display. It is now an excellent watch and I love wearing it. I hope Casio continues to produce these or that this is a trend for them.
@@sahebkapoor6707 I bought a second watch with a positive display and switched the insides of them. There are other youtube videos showing the process.
Does the A1000M have the Casio feature to find out if it’s a true Casio? Hold lower right button down till time switches to the word “CASIo”. I think that’s what it should look like including the awkward lowercase “o” lol. Oh and where’s the best place to order? I ordered F91W & A168WA which is sold & shipped by amazon. Even though it Amazon, still hoping not to receive any fakes. Thank you for your help Gentry
What a great review TGV. I really appreciate that you give as much detail and consideration for watches at this level as you do with the "super luxury" watches. I also appreciate the review, because I kept thinking this watch isn't that expensive how can there be so many negatives...most of them I can live with, but the 30m water resit is an absolute deal breaker for me. That's a huge bummer. If they can make the $30 Casio Royal 100m, what can't this be at least 100m. Sad, but I hope they come out with a model with a higher WR rating.
In the early 80ies, Casio manufactured a beautiful series of digital Marlins with a stainless steel casing and a screw down back with a water resistance of 100m (H 101, W 450, W 750 and W 36 with only 50 m). I hope Casio comes up with those models again, of course with the latest modules. My personal wish would be the A 700 with a stainless steel casing and a sapphire window. Does somebody machine such modes?
Whilst I don't have any digital watches in my collection (and do not envisage adding one anytime soon), it was nonetheless a video that I found very interesting to watch.
I have a negative-display G-Shock. Every time I look at it, and cannot see the time, I realize how little I care about what time it is.

The durable stainless case is kinda wasted if the crystal is not on par.
And NOT make it in China. So disappointing because it's a really almost excellent watch.
What would we do without Casio hating watch snobs? Try an Allay digital, made in Germany, all steel, sapphire crystal. I have one, very cool watch.

Anything f91-w-esque grabs my attention imidiately. Looks really nice, tho the negatives kinda put me off. A step in the right direction, maybe.
I wish it had the month and a countdown timer.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!
Excellent suggestion. Casio are you listening?!?!?!?
Thank you my friend, the Gentry has spoken.
Best regards,
TGV
The no month display has always made the F91W and it’s siblings a no go.
I wonder if the module can be easily modded for the countdown timer. I bought a $20 Casio and scratched a contact to activate the countdown timer. But you're right: it is something that should have come standard. Perhaps Casio is trying to get away from their nefarious history as the bomb makers' watch of choice.
@@briansmith3011 how often do you forget what month it is though?
Casio's been really been knocking it out of the park lately. Love this release!
Do you Dream?
I'd totally rock that, even as a dress watch.
You have style!!1
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I was thinking about the same, would be perfect with a shirt or suit.
casio rules! however we like seiko, citizen, the swiss etc, we always go back home to the digital casio! Great video TGV! Casio rules in many ways! Stay healthy and best regards from Greece. Kostas
Love this watch. Think I'm going to pick up the white dial version with the normal stainless steel bracelet. Think the reference model is A1000D
I would just like to say one thing about that intro, HOLY 80'S BATMAN!!
I personally loved the Testatrossa driving into the sunset. _sigh_
Made me flashback to Miami Vice. 😄 I was a child in the 80s, born in 1979, but I remember the decade decently well! ☺️
I think Casio should do a *Knight Rider* special edition watch.
I don't blame you the, the ProPlof is ruddy amazing!!!!!!
Enjoy it for me,
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Thanks for the videos TGV! I nearly bought a certain fashion watch made in China, then I watched your video and spent double my budget but I’ve ended up with a Tissot le locle powermatic 80!! So glad I did 😉
4:57 *"LED ILLUMINATION"*

It is LED bwt :D
Great video! Can you swap out the wrist band for the older version’s band?
Well, you certainly covered all basis on reviewing this watch , very professionally executed...
I'm definitely not a fan of the band, I would rather the traditional style stainless steel segment band, and less of a dark digital display, the water resistance is mediocre and a let down, as you rightly mentioned, but based on most 30m Casio's it will almost never leak during swimming activities, never had one fail thus far.
Phenomenal video sir. Editing and commentary were top notch.
Sweet intro. This channel has the best intro. Always keeping them fresh too
As always, a very informative presentation! The watch is definitely worth consideration!
Thanks for your review on this watch.
it's not a The Urban Gentry review of a Casio if he doesn't mention Silent Running
Thank you for the honest review TGV, I had luckily ordered one immediately after watching your video only to find out moments later they are sold out everywhere!
Your history lessons are the best. Perfect way to build the complete story. Bravo!
The faux Mother of Pearl dial reminds me of holograms used in 80’s/90’s toys, magazines etc. It also looks similar to an oil slick.
It’s real mother of Pearl though...
Silver digits would be more legible and improve the color balance for me. I'm with you, I hope they improve the features.
Other than when I was a kid I havent looked at casio but this is fantastic , thumbs up for the review TGV
Mannnn! TGV got the best intros in the business!🔥🔥
Thanks for this review, TGV. As always, impeccably produced and narrated. I love Casio digitals, and this is quite a cool addition to the lineup.
Yes! they are worth it!! - I love my A1000m and it's a regular wearer
It's fascinating to know what they were thinking. But there will be more iterations so I'd say they will take the points you've noted.
I found myself strangely and strongly attracted to this watch. It's like Gucci turned nerd. Love the mesh. Hate the too dark display. Thanks so much for bringing this up. I may have to begin a hunt. Isn't there a hack where a polarizing filter can be removed?
Would’ve been better without a negative display. Nice review, thanks for doing a “negatives” segment.
The intro alone warranted a thumbs up!!!
I always enjoy coming home from work to see a video from the channel, it makes my day, even when i watch them at night
That makes. it all worth it, thank you so much Conner, I hope you had a good day.
Best regards,
TGV
Great review mate! Negative display on this Casio model looks sharp indeed! Thanks
Sneaking in some Vita action too, nice.
Best review of this watch that I've seen so far. I agree with everything you said although I would prefer more dial options that aren't mother of pearl.
If UA-cam gave awards for production values and narration and intro creativity you’d be the NY Yankees of that award show
TGV for the Yemmy!

I’m going to have to say goodnight.
I too have Suunto Ambit2 that you can change from positive to negative screens.
I hope they've improved The clasp construction!
I rewatched this video I have to say the review is quite good. You're attention to detail in this video and the way you elegantly put the characteristics of the watch casio should be paying you And I don't say that to be insulting I mean that you elegantly and beautifully showed the watch in its true form.
Why didn’t they make it with sapphire glass? That’s one of the biggest shortfalls here
If they did it would cost much more so the price maybe wouldn't make sense
@@jorgem8384 It's still expensive - basically it's a simplest Casio after all. It's a watch for enthusiasts so extra price for sapphire wouldn't be a problem.
Would have pushed the price much much higher. But I'm with you, if you're going to make the simple, elegant, premium watch, don't half-ass it
I got the brushed steel dial version recently. Lovely watches!!! Got it for 60 euro on sale.
Planes trains and automobiles, john candy trying to pawn his watch. Displaying it like home shopping network up and down his arm. Claiming Casio. Classic.
Ahh thats right! and shower rings lol
Wow. This is absolutely the best looking Casio of them all‼️
You're is the first Casio that's really gotten my attention. I had one in grade school, but not since... That water resistance is dreadful and might be a deal killer.... Too bad about the weak negative display.. . If they update it, better display.... Better water resistance and sapphire and it will be a fantastic watch. No USA release???
That Dan Henry 1937 is gorgeous. I enjoy showing mine off.
I would love to see a full metal/“newer” vintage Databank DBC-611.
Hey TGV, what is the song for this intro. Nice intro by the way.
Thank you, the track is:

Intro was dope!

Well said my friend and so damn true.
Thank you Cory,

You can still have metal cased casio for way cheaper if u just take the time to look on ebay for example look up the casio A160 in all black for like 30dollars
Oh boy yes. I love how you always upload when i had a stressfull day. WHERE ARE THE CAMERAS TGV ! WHERE !?
I bought one and did a swap for a positive display. It is now an excellent watch and I love wearing it. I hope Casio continues to produce these or that this is a trend for them.
How did you change from negative to positive
@@sahebkapoor6707 I bought a second watch with a positive display and switched the insides of them. There are other youtube videos showing the process.
This Casio has a 70’s or 80’s vibe to it.It’s really cool that a watch that inexpensive can be so nostalgic.
Thank you Escuderia :D
Best regards,
TGV
An inexpensive $100 f-105?
uuuultra ✔️ stop buying v-bucks for fortnite and open a savings account.
The most nostalgic intro ever!!!!
That intro was awesome. Especially the outrun scene
You just made my day.
And hearing that, made. mine!
Thank you Max,

Love to see you back at keep up the good work.
Great review! This is a super handsome steel watch. I kind of want one now ...
Got this for my girlfriend the other week and it's honestly so sleek and minimal, really lovely watch I'll get for myself too.
