- Fifty years ago tonight, January 12, 1966 on ABC, Batman premiered on broadcast television and a media sensation was born.
This is a clip from the Vicki Lawrence syndicated talk show from June 19, 1994. Adam West (Batman), Julie Newmar (Catwoman) and Frank Gorshin (Riddler) reminisced at their days on the show, and Gorshin (RIP) does another of his wonderful Kirk Douglas impressions!

I got to meet Frank Gorshin at a small comicon in Roanoke VA. I had walked outside to smoke a cigarette and there he was talking to some folks and having a smoke. Honest to God, he was the nicest guy, had wonderful stories and was a thrill to meet.
I was just reading on Wikipedia how Gorshin was an extremely heavy smoker (smoking as much as 5 packs a day) He died of lung cancer. (I enjoyed his Riddler a lot when I was a kid during the original run of Batman on TV)
That is so cool. I always enjoyed Frank's work. I recall his guest spot on The Munsters, where he played a drunken car salesman, called, Fair Deal Dan. Hilarious. Great Riddler too. He was a first rate mimic. His best was his Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, and he did quite a few real well.
That's awesome. My dad lived in Roanoke.
That is so great. I'm very jealous. I would have loved to have met Frank Gorshin. In New York, I did get to meet Julie Newmar and Adam West and couldn't believe how nice they were. They went out of their way to give people their undivided attention. It was the thrill of a lifetime.
There will never be another Riddler like Frank Gorshin. He was the best, especially his laughter!

Gorshin made a ass of himself on this dumb stupid TV show .. since then I avoided any movie or TV show with him on it .. In fact I did not watch this posting ..I just saw his picture and decided to comment about his stupid acting .. He was never funny and he was just a total disgusting actor .. His so called acting will not be missed

I agree totally with other posters here: Frank Gorshin stood out as the best Riddler bar none. And the giggling laugh he did in that role is unforgettable.
Adam West will always be The Bright Knight. RIP. RIP also to Frank Gorshin, the greatest impressionist ever and the absolute best Riddler. He played his role semi-straight, unlike the other guest villains, and that made him all the more menacing. He was one of a kind.
Frank Gorshin was a very good actor. Of course he was a great Riddler. He starred on Combat twice and I was very impressed watching him with the great Vic Morrow. An excellent drama actor.
Out of all the villains the Riddler was the best one. He wasnt overly theatrical like the Joker, wasnt purring like Catwoman or quacking like the Penguin. He seemed like at any time he could grab an Uzi and take out an office.

Frank Gorshin played the Riddler as if he were on the very edge of insanity. It was always fun when the Riddler was the supervillain featured on the show.

Frank Gorshin was 61 when this was filmed, although he somehow managed to look even older. He died in 2005.
almost all the actors from the 1960s who got suntans back then look older than they are becuase over exposure in the sun robs the body of nutrients which causes wrinkles.

A piece of trivia: Frank Gorshin (along with Davy Jones of Monkees fame) was on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, the same exact night some group from Liverpool, England made their American debut. And the rest is history.

I was.11 years old and I saw the first episode in 1965.
One gets the impression watching the old Batman series that Frank Gorshin had a lot of fun playing the Riddler. And of course Julie Newmar is the only true Catwoman. The thing I remember from when I was a kid, the show came on twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday. There was always a cliff hanger at the end of Tuesday's episode and the announcer would urge you to tune in again for the conclusion on Thursday, "same Bat-time, same Bat-channel." Great stuff.

The best villains of them all, imcomparable, no substitutes! They were Phenomenal, Riddler, Joker, penguin, catwoman!

Sadly, Yvonne Craig died at age 78 at her home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, on August 17, 2015, from metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her liver.

Jim Carrey could have done a good job. Instead, he was simply performing his usual stock comic persona. Gorshin was far more nuanced.
Astin was miscast and lacked the manic energy that Gorshin gave to the character.

Batgirl was an attempt to extend the series and to appeal to prepubescent female children.
